It is supposed to allow Maigret to reminisce about his childhood as he is drawn to investigate at the château of Saint-Fiacre, where he was born as his father was the steward <i>(régisseur)</i> of the property. It is said that Simenon also poured quite a few of his own memories in that novel, drawn from his days as secretary to the Marquess of Torcy in 1923–24.<br /> <br /> As is customary in the movie industry, there is no actual village named Saint-Fiacre, and the various components that, on-screen, make up the whole setting of the investigation (the château, the village square, the church where the murder is “committed” [no spoiler here!], the nearby midsize town and its downtown café), are in fact located in very diverse places, often far away from one another.<br /> <br /> Because I always was a big fan of the movie, I intended to go to the village where the church and fictitious village square were located: Gaillon-sur-Montcient, in this awkward old French province of Vexin that no one can really place, wedged as it is between the Paris metropolitan area and Normandy.<br /> <br /> If what passed for the village square in the movie was crowded with unsightly parked cars, the church however remained exactly <i>dans son jus</i> —literally, “in its juices”, or if you will, in the exact same, slightly decaying condition as it appeared to be almost 70 years ago when the movie was shot.
