A 90’s Skate Party For School Supplies

You know you miss the 90’s! The music, the clothes, the movies of the 90’s is when most of you, my readers, were busy finding your true self and good friends. Lets take it back on Sunday, Aug 1st, and put those skates on, hear the music of the 90’s and forget we ever wore braces and used way too much hair spray or perms!

In Living Color: 90’s Skate Party is presented by My Mood Music, Mindstream Radio and the DMVIFF to bring the fun and collect donations of school supplies for area schools. DCWEEK was a ten day run of events and collaboration and included tech, media, bloggers, creatives, fashion and philanthropy. Tuesday, Jun 15, The Northern Virginia Technology Council with PR firm, Welz & Weisel, hosted the first ever Social Media Awards to highlight some of the DC area’s best use of the medium. The K Street Lounge venue provided early DC nightlife without the loud music but certainly provided a great space for cocktails, California Tortilla burritos and a professional crowd eager to hear the SMA winners. Peter Corbett, one of the strategists behind #DCWEEK, managed to make time to visit and stand on stage to thank everyone for their participation and integrating their events for the week long activities.

Event organizers, Lisa Byrne and Nicole Nolte, were able to generate a solid evening and incorporate the awards with their regular tweetup series, “DC Tweetups & Twineups.” These ladies take their online social media savvy and produce offline meetups bringing local sponsors and avid social media users together for networking, business interaction and of course, wine. What else would two PR and Marketing professionals do with great ideas and a diverse social following?

Advanced Classes to Begin June 21st at the Bethesda Bach to Rock

Bethesda, MD — Chris Stiles (DJ Stylus Chris) and Brian Sadiarin, (DJGeometrix) directors of B2R’s DJ school, Beat Refinery, are pleased to announce a new series of classes to begin June 21, 2010.

The program which first rolled out 2 months ago began with Basic DJ Techniques along with Scratching and Turntablism 101. The next installment includes Intermediate DJ Techniques as well as Scratching and Turntablism 202. "Seasoned DJs can also benefit from the Beat Refinery's Intermediate and Advanced courses,” says Stiles. “With the ever changing technologies in so many fields, professionals are constantly required to evolve and adapt and DJing is not excluded from this".

Intermediate DJ Techniques allows students to dive a bit deeper into what it takes to become a great DJ. Move from novice to mid-level skills in all facets of the turntables. Learn about trick mixing, intermediate Scratching and Mixing as well as Music Programming and Multi Genre Mixing. Become more adept with Serato Scratch Live® and its functionality. Entry level Remixing, Editing and Production tools will also be explored.

Scratching and Turntablism 202 tackles the advanced techniques of turntable manipulation. Learn all the difficult scratches along with becoming a beat maker with just a needle and a record. Get familiar with DJing's form of written music, Scratch Notation, and hone your skills.

A true hero knows when to make life altering decisions, when to strategically change the course and always knows when to take care of his own. On Tuesday, May 4th, LCDR Dr. Andy Baldwin of the U.S. Navy, and known to some from tv show “The Bachelor”, will host the second annual Martinis and Makeovers. Andy’s nonprofit, Got Your Back Network, focuses on the family members that have lost a soldier in today’s military exercises. The Martinis and Makeovers event will pamper the widows of fallen servicemen in need of a night out and a little social activity! The event will run at the Ritz-Carlton Degrees Bar and a suggested $20 donation to assist with GYBN (Got Your Back Network) programs is appreciated.

Photographer friend Vincent Gallegos and Dawn Anderson hosted an artistic launch party to introduce their new venture, VGDA Design. Need a fresh website design? See VGDA Design! The party was an April evening of style, art and the eclectic personalities that love to live on the edge of beauty. Special guest from the arts and event scene, Philippa Hughes of The Pink Line Project, was onsite with smiles and plenty of energy. The photography duo of Mil and Vik from Apt3 Photography snapped shots of the evening and we even had moments to talk shop! Nightlife PR photographer Messay of www.messay.com blended in the crowd to snap some amazing shots of event participants and art on the scene. Event coordinators and DC blog team ReadySetDC chose a great venue that fit well with the various types of art shown and music played by DJ Sweetie Pie!

The May 6th evening performance will be The Marriage of Figaro by the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artists starting promptly at 7:30 pm! Our DC news ladies are on mark to make an impact on breast cancer! Last year was the first NewsBabes bash supported by ten of our female news anchors across four news networks. They were not concerned with which channel has the best ratings, who anchors the five o’clock with style nor were they concerned with where WUSA 9’s Angie Goff or Fox 5’s Shawn Yancy gets that fabulous on air jewelry. Instead, the DC NewsBabes came together to support Susan G. Komen campaign to make an impact on breast cancer, that unfortunate disease that affects women and men whether a front line news anchor, a public figure, a school teacher, a waste management worker, a farmer or a public service volunteer. Breast cancer is very real and upfront in our lives. DC NewsBabes are looking for your support to manage the awareness and support them in the upcoming Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

On Monday May 10th, join the NewsBabes at the Ritz-Carleton Georgetown from 6:30 pm to 9 pm. Honored guests include Ambassador Nancy Brinker (Founder & CEO of Susan G.
