Singing

Rock singer Ian Gillan performing live with Deep Purple in 2006.

Singing is the act of producing musical sounds with the voice, which is often contrasted with speech. Air is expelled with the diaphragm as with ordinary breathing, and the pitch is altered with the vocal cords. With the lips closed, this is called humming. A piece of music created to accompany a singing part, or a cappella piece of music is called a song; someone who sings is called a singer.

Most singing involves shaping the voice to form words, but types of voice instrumental music which use open sounds or nonsense syllables ("vocables") also exist, for instance, scat singing and yodeling. Solfege assigns certain syllables to notes in the scale.

Nearly anyone who can speak can sing, since in many respects singing is merely sustained speech. It can be informal and just for pleasure, for example, singing in the shower; or it can be very formal, such as singing done professionally as a performance or in a recording studio. Singing at a high amateur or professional level usually requires a great deal of regular practice, and/or instruction. Many top-quality singers regularly take or have taken a great deal of professional instruction from one or more voice coaches.

Singing is often done in a group, such as a choir, and may be accompanied by musical instruments, a full orchestra, or a band. Singing with no instrumental accompaniment is called a cappella.

Show choir is a combination of singing and dancing. Many schools and colleges offer show choir groups for students to participate in. Not only must participants be able to sing well and blend in with a group, but they must be able to dance at the same time. This requires endurance, flexibility, and strong vocals, which can all be acquired through practice.

It is also imperitive that singers continuously practise with drills, [[1]voice exercises] and strengthening activities. Without constant practice, the singers range can be significantly decreased, requiring extra rehearsal to regain the voices' previous capability.

In hardcore punk, hoarse shouting takes the place of singing, while in emo, some bands scream rather than sing. In metal, particularly the sub-genre of death metal, low growls called death grunts are favoured over standard singing.

Motion picture rating systems

A motion picture rating system is a method of giving moviegoers an idea of the suitability of a movie for children and/or adults in terms of issues such as sex, violence and profanity. A particular issued rating is called a certification. In some jurisdictions, they may impose legal obligations of refusing the entrance of children or minors to certain movies; in others, while there is no legal obligation to do so strictly speaking, movie theaters enforce the restrictions. Ratings are often given in lieu of censorship. Some people think that the ratings should be stronger. There is much debate in major countries as to whether ratings actually serve a valid function, or whether they simply entice young children to watch movies deemed inappropriate for them. This concept is known as the forbidden fruit phenomenon.

In some countries (e.g. Australia), an official government body decides on ratings; in other countries (e.g. the US), it is done by industry bodies with no official government status. However, in most countries, movies that are considered morally offensive have been banned or restricted.

Fruitcake

Fruitcake is a heavy cake made of dried or candied fruits and nuts that are soaked in brandy or rum, often used in the celebration of weddings and Christmas.

History

The earliest recipe from ancient Rome lists pomegranate seeds, pine nuts, and raisins that were mixed into barley mash.

In the Middle Ages, honey, spices, and preserved fruits were added and the name fruitcake was first used. Robert Sietsema finds that inexpensive sugar from the American Colonies and the discovery that high concentrations of sugar could preserve fruits created an excess of candied fruit. The fruitcake was the way to use them.

In the 18th century, Europeans were baking fruitcakes using nuts from the harvest for good luck in the following year. The cake was saved and eaten before the next harvest. Fruitcakes proliferated until a law in Europe restricted them to Christmas, weddings, and a few other holidays. Even so, the fruitcake remained popular at Victorian Teas in England throughout the 19th century.

Mail-order fruitcakes began in 1913. The management of Ringling Brothers Circus liked the fruitcake from Collin Street Bakery, a local bakery in Corsicana, Texas. They ordered them as gifts to be mailed to friends around the country. Collin Street Bakery, using the old European recipe of baker Gus Weidmann and salesman Tom McElwee, grew quickly, and have shipped their fruitcakes to nearly 200 countries worldwide and numerous multi-national corporations and famous individuals.

The modern fruitcakes are fundamentally butter cakes with just enough dough to bind the fruit. The cakes are saturated with liqueurs or brandy, and covered in powdered sugar, both of which prevent mold. Brandy or wine-soaked linens are used to store the fruitcakes. Many people feel fruitcakes improve with age. Some cakes have been eaten 25 years after baking.

Recently, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, a man discovered a 43 year old fruitcake in his mother's attic that his aunts had sent to him in 1962, while stationed at an Army base in Alaska. The cake arrived wrapped in brown paper with a red "fragile, handle with care" sticker on it, and the label "Old Fashioned Fruitcake". The man who found this treasure says "Now it's just old".

Fruitcake in popular culture

In the United States of America, the fruitcake has become one of the most ridiculed desserts and the butt of many jokes centered on its heaviness and long shelf life.

Former Tonight Show host Johnny Carson joked that there really is only one fruitcake in the world. It is passed from family to family -- a joke also frequently attributed to the writer Calvin Trillin, who denies being the source. Trillin says he was just passing along a theory he "had heard from someone in Denver". He continues, "There is nothing dangerous about fruitcakes as long as people send them along without eating them." The Fruitcake Lady makes appearances with current host Jay Leno and offers her "fruitcake" opinions.

Comedian Jim Gaffigan has used fruitcake in his bit to question its relation to regular cakes with the line, "Fruit, good; cake, great; fruitcake, nasty crap."

For the last nine years about 500 people have shown up in Manitou Springs, Colorado each January for the Great Fruitcake Toss. "We encourage the use of recycled fruitcakes", says Leslie Lewis of the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce. The all-time Great Fruitcake Toss record is 420 feet.

In the UK, fruitcakes are far moister and richer than their American counterparts, and remain extremely popular. The traditional Christmas cake is a fruitcake covered in marzipan, and then in white satin or royal icing. They are often further decorated with snow scenes, holly leaves and berries (real or artificial), or tiny decorative robins or snowmen.

Fruitcakes have been banned on airplanes. Because they are difficult to identify using x-ray equipment at security checkpoints, they could exacerbate security delays created by recently increased security.

Fruitcake is also used, especially in the United Kingdom and the United States, as insulting slang for a 'crazy person' (e.g. "he's a complete fruitcake"). It is derived from the expression "nutty as a fruitcake", which was first recorded in 1935. [1] It is also used to suggest that someone is a homosexual.

Luke 12

12:1 At that time, when thousands of the people had come together, in such numbers that they were crushing one another, he said first to his disciples, Have nothing to do with the leaven of the Pharisees, which is deceit.

12:2 But nothing is covered up, which will not come to light, or secret, which will not be made clear.

12:3 So, whatever you have said in the dark, will come to men's hearing in the light, and what you have said secretly inside the house, will be made public from the house-tops.

12:4 And I say to you, my friends, Have no fear of those who may put the body to death, and are able to do no more than that.

12:5 But I will make clear to you of whom you are to be in fear: of him who after death has power to send you to hell; yes, truly I say, Have fear of him.

12:6 Are not five sparrows given in exchange for two farthings? and God has every one of them in mind.

12:7 But even the hairs of your head are numbered. Have no fear: you are of more value than a flock of sparrows.

12:8 And I say to you that to everyone who gives witness to me before men, the Son of man will give witness before the angels of God.

12:9 But if anyone says before men that he has no knowledge of me, I will say that I have no knowledge of him before the angels of God.

12:10 And if anyone says a word against the Son of man, he will have forgiveness: but for him who says evil words against the Holy Spirit, there will be no forgiveness.

12:11 And when they take you before the Synagogues and the authorities and the rulers, take no thought about what answers you will give, or what you will say:

12:12 For the Holy Spirit will make clear to you in that very hour what to say.

12:13 And one of the people said to him, Master, give an order to my brother to make division of the heritage with me.

12:14 But he said, Man, who made me a judge or a maker of decisions for you?

12:15 And he said to them, Take care to keep yourselves free from the desire for property; for a man's life is not made up of the number of things which he has.

12:16 And he said to them, in a story, The land of a certain man of great wealth was very fertile:

12:17 And he said to himself, What is to be done? for I have no place in which to put all my fruit.

12:18 And he said, This I will do: I will take down my store-houses and make greater ones, and there I will put all my grain and my goods.

12:19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have a great amount of goods in store, enough for a number of years; be at rest, take food and wine and be happy.

12:20 But God said to him, You foolish one, tonight I will take your soul from you, and who then will be the owner of all the things which you have got together?

12:21 So that is what comes to the man who gets wealth for himself, and has not wealth in the eyes of God.

12:22 And he said to his disciples, For this reason I say to you, Take no thought for your life, about what food you will take, or for your body, how it may be clothed.

12:23 Is not life more than food, and the body than its clothing?

12:24 Give thought to the ravens; they do not put seeds into the earth, or get together grain; they have no store-houses or buildings; and God gives them their food: of how much greater value are you than the birds!

12:25 And which of you by taking thought is able to make himself any taller?

12:26 If, then, you are not able to do even that which is least, why are you troubled about the rest?

12:27 Give thought to the flowers: they do no work, they make no thread; and still I say to you, Even Solomon, in all his glory, was not clothed like one of these.

12:28 But if God gives such clothing to the grass in the field, which today is living, and tomorrow will be burned in the oven, how much more will he give clothing to you, O men of little faith?

12:29 And do not give overmuch thought to your food and drink, and let not your mind be full of doubts.

12:30 For the nations of the world go in search of all these things: but your Father has knowledge that you have need of them.

12:31 But let your chief care be for his kingdom, and these other things will be given to you in addition.

12:32 Have no fear, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

12:33 Give what property you have in exchange for money, and give the money to the poor; make for yourselves money-bags which will not get old, wealth stored up in heaven which will be yours for ever, where thieves will not come nor worms put it to destruction.

12:34 For where your wealth is, there will your heart be.

12:35 Be ready, dressed as for a journey, with your lights burning.

12:36 And be like men who are looking for their lord, when he comes back from the bride-feast; so that when he comes to the door, it will be open to him quickly.

12:37 Happy are those servants who are watching when the lord comes; truly I say to you, he will make himself their servant and, placing them at the table, he will come out and give them food.

12:38 And if he comes in the second division of the night or in the third, and they are watching for him, happy are those servants.

12:39 But be certain of this, that if the master of the house had had knowledge of the time when the thief was coming, he would have been watching, and would not have let his house be broken into.

12:40 So be ready: for the Son of man is coming at a time when you are not looking for him.

12:41 And Peter said to him, Lord, are these words said to us only, or to all men?

12:42 And the Lord said, Who then is the wise and responsible servant whom his lord will put in control of his family, to give them their food at the right time?

12:43 Happy is that servant who, when his lord comes, is doing so.

12:44 Truly I say to you, he will put him in control of all his goods.

12:45 But if that servant says to himself, My lord is a long time coming; and goes about giving blows to the men-servants and the women-servants, feasting and taking overmuch wine;

12:46 The lord of that servant will come at a time when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not ready for him, and he will have him cut in two and will give him his part in the fate of those who have no faith;

12:47 And the servant who had knowledge of his lord's desires and was not ready for him and did not do as he was ordered, will be given a great number of blows;

12:48 But he who, without knowledge, did things for which punishment is given, will get only a small number of blows. The man to whom much is given, will have to give much; if much is given into his care, of him more will be requested.

12:49 I came to send a fire on the earth, and it may even now have been lighted.

12:50 But there is a baptism which I have to undergo; and how am I kept back till it is complete!

12:51 Is it your opinion that I have come to give peace on earth? I say to you, No, but division:

12:52 For from this time, a family of five in one house will be on opposite sides, three against two and two against three.

12:53 They will be at war, the father against his son, and the son against his father; mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.

12:54 Then he said to the people, When you see a cloud coming up in the west, straight away you say, There will be rain; and so it is.

12:55 And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, There will be heat; and so it is.

12:56 O false ones! the face of the earth and the heaven is clear to you; how is it that the signs of these times are not as clear to you?

12:57 And why are you, in your hearts, unable to be judges of what is right?

12:58 For if anyone has a cause at law against you, and you are going with him before the ruler, make an attempt, on the way, to come to an agreement with him, for if you do not, he may take you before the judge and the judge will give you up to the police, and they will put you in prison.

12:59 I say to you, You will not come out of it till you have made payment to the very last farthing.

Ephesians 05

5:1 Let it then be your desire to be like God, as well-loved children;

5:2 And be living in love, even as Christ had love for you, and gave himself up for us, an offering to God for a perfume of a sweet smell.

5:3 But evil acts of the flesh and all unclean things, or desire for others' property, let it not even be named among you, as is right for saints;

5:4 And let there be no low behaviour, or foolish talk, or words said in sport, which are not right, but in place of them the giving of praise.

5:5 Being certain of this, that no man who gives way to the passions of the flesh, no unclean person, or one who has desire for the property of others, or who gives worship to images, has any heritage in the kingdom of Christ and God.

5:6 Do not be turned from the right way by foolish words; for because of these things the punishment of God comes on those who do not put themselves under him.

5:7 Have no part with such men;

5:8 For you at one time were dark, but now are light in the Lord: let your behaviour be that of children of light

5:9 (Because the fruit of the light is in all righteousness and in everything which is good and true),

5:10 Testing by experience what is well-pleasing to the Lord;

5:11 And have no company with the works of the dark, which give no fruit, but make their true quality clear;

5:12 For the things which are done by them in secret it is shame even to put into words.

5:13 But all things, when their true quality is seen, are made clear by the light: because everything which is made clear is light.

5:14 For this reason he says, Be awake, you who are sleeping, and come up from among the dead, and Christ will be your light.

5:15 Take care then how you are living, not as unwise, but as wise;

5:16 Making good use of the time, because the days are evil.

5:17 For this reason, then, do not be foolish, but be conscious of the Lord's pleasure.

5:18 And do not take overmuch wine by which one may be overcome, but be full of the Spirit;

5:19 Joining with one another in holy songs of praise and of the Spirit, using your voice in songs and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

5:20 Giving praise at all times for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father;

5:21 Letting yourselves be ruled by one another in the fear of Christ.

5:22 Wives, be under the authority of your husbands, as of the Lord.

5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church, being himself the saviour of the body.

5:24 And as the church is under Christ's authority, so let wives be under the rule of their husbands in all things.

5:25 Husbands, have love for your wives, even as Christ had love for the church, and gave himself for it;

5:26 So that he might make it holy, having made it clean with the washing of water by the word,

5:27 And might take it for himself, a church full of glory, not having one mark or fold or any such thing; but that it might be holy and complete.

5:28 Even so it is right for husbands to have love for their wives as for their bodies. He who has love for his wife has love for himself:

5:29 For no man ever had hate for his flesh; but he gives it food and takes care of it, even as Christ does for the church;

5:30 Because we are parts of his body.

5:31 For this cause will a man go away from his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.

5:32 This is a great secret: but my words are about Christ and the church.

As required by law, these funds are fully segregated from the company's general investment funds, hence the eponym.

Hurricane Katrina

On September 12 2005, Google added two new search features designed specificially for finding information about Hurricane Katrina's aftermath. The first is Katrina People Search that can helps you search multiple databases for information on friends and family affected by the hurricane. The second feature is a Special Index Search on Katrina related pages.

 Official Google Hurricane Katrina search tools

Music

"Google Music" is a service launched on December 15, 2005. The new service is not going to be a music library, such as Yahoo’s. The service will search libraries of legal download services and will provide links to the partners, as well as lyrics and biographies of the artist. Initial merchant partners include Apple Computer's iTunes service, RealNetworks's Rhapsody, eMusic and Amazon.com, and WalMart.com, Google said. Google also said that this does not represent Google moving to be an online music retailer. The way the service is used is by simply typing in the name of a popular band and searching from the standard home page, the engine will return specialized results at the top of the results similar to "Google AdSense"

 Google Music website

Movies

Allows users in the USA and Canada to search for info about movies using the main Google search interface. You can search in various ways:

Entering "movie: 10001" in the Google "search text" entry field will search for all movies being shown in and around United States zipcode 10001- sorted by movie theater. Within the listing you can see showtimes, the average rating for each movie, as well as links to all reviews, and a link to the IMDB page for that movie.

Entering "movie: movies 10001" provides a listing sorted by movie, showing all locations and showtimes where each movie is shown in the area.

Entering "movie: Julia Roberts" provides a listing sorted by movie, of many of the movies starring this actor/actress. It is unclear what rules/algorithm is used for including/excluding certain movies.

PhoneBook

This search feature is built into Google's standard search bar; if the search terms match certain criteria, an option to view search results of Google's telephone directory archive is provided. One can search both residential and business listings. There is also an option available to remove one's phone book entry from Google.

American origins of Santa Claus

Thomas Nast immortalized Santa Claus with an illustration for the January 3, 1863, issue of Harper's

In the British colonies of North America and later the United States, British and Dutch versions of the gift-giver merged further. For example, in Washington Irving's History of New York, Sinterklaas was Americanized into "Santa Claus" but lost his bishop's apparel, and was at first pictured as a thick-bellied Dutch sailor with a pipe in a green winter coat. Irving's book was a lampoon of the Dutch culture of New York, and much of this portrait is his joking invention.

Modern ideas of Santa Claus seemingly became canon after the publication of the poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (better known today as "The Night Before Christmas") in the Troy, New York, Sentinel on December 23, 1823. The poem is ascribed to Clement Clarke Moore, although there is some question as to his authorship. In this poem Santa is established as a heavyset individual with eight reindeer (who are named for the first time). Santa Claus later appeared in various colored costumes as he gradually became amalgamated with the figure of Father Christmas, but red soon became popular after he appeared wearing such on an 1885 Christmas card. Still, one of the first artists to capture Santa Claus's image as we know him today was Thomas Nast, an American cartoonist of the 19th century. In 1863, a picture of Santa illustrated by Nast appeared in Harper's Weekly (it is believed the inspiration for his image came from the Pelznickle). Another popularization was The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, a 1902 biography (of sorts) from youth to old age by L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Much of Santa Claus's mythos was not set in stone at the time, and Baum almost completely ignored the poem, giving his "Neclaus" (Necile's Little One) a wide variety of immortal support (Fairies, Wood Nymphs (including his adoptive mother, Necile), Knooks, Ryls, Sound Imps, Light Elves, Sleep Fays, Gnomes, Water Spirits, Wind Demons, and the lioness Shiegra), a home in the Laughing Valley of Hohaho, and ten reindeer that were not domesticated at all (and had different names from the poem), but whom the Knooks let out of the forest one day each year (and they could not fly, but leapt in enormous, flight-like bounds). Most importantly, Baum revealed that Claus's immortality was earned, much like his title ("Santa"), decided by a vote of those naturally immortal. True to his historic origins as a bishop, Baum's Santa Claus never married. Baum also established Claus's motives: a happy childhood among immortals. When Ak, Master Woodsman of the World, exposes him to the misery and poverty of children in the outside world, he strives to find a way to bring joy into the lives of all children, and eventually invents toys as a principal means.

Images of Santa Claus were further cemented through Haddon Sundblom's depiction of him for The Coca-Cola Company's Christmas advertising. The popularity of the image spawned urban legends that Santa Claus was in fact invented by Coca-Cola. Nevertheless, Santa Claus and Coca-Cola have been closely associated.[2] The image of Santa Claus as a benevolent character became reinforced with its association with charity and philanthropy, particularly organizations such as the Salvation Army. Volunteers dressed as Santa Claus typically became part of fundraising drives to aid needy families at Christmas time.

 A man dressed up as Santa Claus fundraising for Volunteers of America on the sidewalk of street in Chicago, Illinois, in 1902. He is wearing a mask with a beard attached. DN-0001069, Chicago Daily News negatives collection, Chicago Historical Society.

Some suspect that the depiction of Santa at the North Pole reflected popular opinion about industry at the time. In some images of the early 20th century, Santa was depicted as personally making his toys by hand in a small workshop like a craftsman. Eventually, the idea emerged that he had numerous elves responsible for making the toys, but the toys were still handmade by each individual elf working in the traditional manner. By the end of the century, the reality of mass mechanized production became more fully accepted by the Western public. That shift was reflected in the modern depiction of Santa's residence—now often humorously portrayed as a fully mechanized production facility, equipped with the latest manufacturing technology, and overseen by the elves with Santa and Mrs. Claus as managers [see Nissenbaum, chap. 2; Belk, 87-100]. Many television commercials depict this as a sort of humorous business, with Santa's elves acting as a sometimes mischievously disgruntled workforce, cracking jokes and pulling pranks on their boss. Santa Claus continues to inspire writers and artists, such as in author Seabury Quinn's 1948 novel Roads. Other additions to early ideas of Santa include Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the ninth and lead reindeer immortalized in a Gene Autry song, written by a Montgomery Ward copywriter.

Common terminology in board games

Carcassonne tokens, or meeples

Although many board games have a jargon all their own, there is a generalized terminology to describe concepts applicable to basic game mechanics and attributes common to nearly all board games.

Gameboard (or board) — the (usually quadrilateral) surface on which one plays a board game; the namesake of the board game, gameboards are a necessary and sufficient condition of the genre

Game Piece (or token or bit) — a player's representative on the game board. Each player may control one or more game pieces. In some games that involve commanding multiple game pieces, such as chess, certain pieces have unique designations and capabilities within the parameters of the game; in others, such as Go, all pieces controlled by a player have the same essential capabilities.

Jump — to bypass one or more game pieces and/or spaces. Depending on the context, jumping may also involve capturing or conquering an opponent's game piece.

Space (or square) — a physical unit of progress on a gameboard delimited by a distinct border
