Special Library Hours for March

Special Library Hours for March have been just announced.

Saturday, March 9th: 8:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.
Sunday, March 10th: 12noon-1a.m
Monday, March 11th - Thursday, March 14th: 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 a.m.
Friday, March 15th: 8:00 a.m. - 10p.m.
Saturday, March 16th: 10a.m-10p.m

Please be aware that the University Spring break for the rest of the FIU students begins this Saturday, March 9th. Although the Green Library building will have shortened hours, the Medical Library will still be open (times listed below). During these times, the doors to the Green Library building will remain open until 11pm (or 9pm on the days we close at 10pm). As long as you are in the Green Library by these times, you will be able to stay in the Medical Library until closing.

IMPORTANT: Please remember to bring your Panther IDs. The Medical Library staff and/or the security guard will be checking IDs at the 2nd floor entrance.

New e-resource: Anatomy.TV

FIU Medical Library now offers Anatomy.TV, a 3D interactive human anatomy tool!

Anatomy.TV can be used by up to 5 simultaneous users. So if you are done with using this database, make sure to completely close your web browser for other students and faculty can use it.

Many of our students already use the free Epocrates Rx® application. How is Epocrates Essentials better?
Epocrates Essentials offers all the functionality of Epocrates Rx (clinical information for thousands of drug monographs), plus additional drug, disease, and diagnostic content, including:
- Information for over 600 alternative (herbal) medicines
- An infectious disease treatment guide
- Diagnostic and treatment information for thousands of diseases
- Hundreds of diagnostic and laboratory tests
What mobile platforms are compatible with Epocrates Essentials?
Epocrates Essentials is compatible with the majority of platforms students are using, including AndroidTM, iPhone/iPod® touch and BlackBerry®.
How do medical students receive their free Epocrates Essentials subscriptions?
Here’s how the program works:
- Epocrates will promote this program to medical students through a variety of promotional channels, including social media and email marketing to medical students already in our database. We invite you to notify your students about the offer as well!
- Promotion of the program will begin August 1st, 2012. At that time, we will launch a page on our web site that will allow medical students to download the premium application for free.

o We will send you the launch email with the link when the web page is live on August 1st so that you can share this with your medical students. We strongly recommend, at minimum, you email the free Epocrates Essentials link. Students are more likely to take advantage of this offer if they receive the announcement via email.

• Once at the web site, medical students can fill in the required registration information, and download the application to their mobile device.

Is this offer available to all medical students?
Medical students currently enrolled in a participating medical school in their first, second, third or fourth years can take advantage of the offer.
To successfully register for this program, the following criteria must be met:
- Individuals must be a U.S. medical student attending an accredited U.S. MD/DO medical school
- Correct occupation (medical student) and current medical school must be entered accurately
  into the online registration form
- Individuals must have an Epocrates-compatible mobile platform (iOS, Android, or Blackberry)
- One free Epocrates subscription is permitted per current academic year
  Only medical students can receive this discount. Applicants will be presented with the names of eligible schools in a drop down menu, with instructions to select the one in which they are currently enrolled. Epocrates will conduct verification checks throughout the course of this program to confirm
  eligibility of participants.
Can residents/other healthcare students take advantage of this offer?
This offer is strictly for medical students only. Residents and healthcare students (i.e. nursing, pharmacy, etc.) are not eligible for this offer. These users may be eligible for other discounts at an institutional rate. How many times can a medical student take advantage of this offer?
A medical student can receive a maximum of four free one-year Epocrates Essentials subscriptions. Medical students can download only one subscription per year. What if a medical student wishes to transfer their subscription to another platform (e.g., switch from Android to iOS)?
We allow one subscription transfer within a 12 month period. If the medical student has already transferred their subscription once this year and wishes to make further changes,

If a medical student has a new device and wishes to transfer their subscription to another platform, instructions can be found here.
Who do we contact for technical support?

Can medical students who do not own mobile devices access Epocrates another way?

Off Campus Access Issues

The "Off-Campus Access" page (https://login.ezproxy.fiu.edu/login) is currently unstable due to the recent redesign of the FIU main university library website. The issue has been reported and we are waiting for the fix.

New Medical Library Kindles are Here!

In addition to FIU Medical Library now offers 10 Kindle Touch e-book readers for HWCOM faculty, students, and staff. Each Kindle reader comes with more than 25 medical titles. See the list of all medical e-book titles.

The Kindle e-book readers are available for HWCOM faculty, students, and staff. They can be checked out at the Medical Library Help Desk for 2 weeks. (No renewals.) Each Kindle comes with a charger, a carrying case, and a complete instruction for the convenience of library patrons. The medical e-books on the library’s Kindle devices are not available online or for a library patron’s personal Kindle. They can read only on the library’s Kindle devices.

Please note that connecting this device with a personal Amazon/Kindle account is PROHIBITED, and the library will not be liable for any consequences if a library patron chooses to do so.

The Kindle devices and the medical e-book collection have been funded by the Express Mobile Technology Project Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) Southeastern/Atlantic (SE/A) Region awarded to FIU Medical Library in 2012. FIU Medical Library continues to strive to provide and improve the mobile technology offerings for library patrons. Possible Issues with Off-campus Access to E-resources

FIU UTS and Green Library are in the process of upgrading the library’s firewalls and other core network infrastructure in order to keep the libraries at the leading edge of computing space, performance, and security.

FIU Medical Library shares some systems with Green Library and as a result, during this upgrade process, you may experience problems with off-campus access to library e-resources intermittently. The issue should be resolved completely within two weeks.

New Database: the ABMS Directory

We have a new database! The ABMS Directory is now available through the FIU Medical Library.

The directory offers information about about more than 800,000 board certified physicians in 50+ specialties and 100+ subspecialties from the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). A directory of all 24 member boards, with their contact information, can be found also found on the Resources tab.

Problem with Off-campus Access to E-Resources on Android Devices

If you are using an Android phone/tablet to access our library e-resources from off-campus, you will get an error message, and you won't be able to view the FIU log-in page. This problem only occurs on an Android device.

We are currently working to fix this problem with the EZproxy vendor. It will be fixed but it may take some time.

E-Resources' on-campus access problem and a workaround

FIU UTS is performing maintenance at this moment. As a result, the EZProxy which enables all remote access to the library's e-resources is affected. If you have any issue with accessing e-resources on the campus, follow the steps below.

Right click the URL of the e-resource on the Medical Library website
Copy and paste the URL onto the URL window of a web browser or a text editor.
The URL will look like this: http://ezproxy.fiu.edu/login?url=https://online.epocrates.com
Remove the ezproxy part in the beginning ( http://ezproxy.fiu.edu/login?url= ).
Copy the part after '='. (In this case, https://online.epocrates.com )
Paste into the URL window of a web browser.
You should be all set!
