A Big Year for Kanye | Entertainment and Sports Celebrities

We've all got a place in our heart for, yes, even Kanye. Wait, Let me finish- "Im'a explain"
This has been a big year for Kanye West. He dropped a new album, had a child with Kim Kardashian and now is recently engaged. The guy seems unstoppable. There aren't many people in Entertainment or Sports Celebrities that get this kind of publicity, He's had a few crazy outrageous moments, of course, and is now touring for his Yeezus album. This Saturday he'll be performing with Kendrick Lamar at Madison Square Garden. Sunday he'll be performing with A Tribe Called Quest.

He seems to always be doing things his way regardless of what others are going to say about him. He started to come out wearing the confederate flag and told Ryan Seacrest on his morning show that he was taking back the symbol. Although it is a risky move, he is commended on his boldness. Who knows how it will go over in the long run, and if people will even take to the statement the way he intends.

Another interesting thing the artist has done is putting his fiance Kim Kardashian in his latest music video for Bound 2. Risque? You bet. Kardashian is topless and straddling a motorcycle as West drives. People are going all sorts of crazy over it. Some love it, some even saying stunts like this will tear them apart as it has other celebrity couples. Kimye doesn't seem to care.

How will all of this affect baby North? "I'm not concerned about the idea of profanity and nudity. It's more of the messaging behind it. She's gonna be in the real world, she's gonna hear things and see things. I think she's gonna be prepared for them," West told viewers of the Ellen DeGeneres show.

Who knows what crazy stunts he will pull out in NYC this weekend. Perhaps he'll keep calm. But knowing Kanye, something's bound to go down. The more time that passes, the less we're all surprised by celebrity actions.

Top 5 Albums of 2017, sorta.

It's been a long time since we posted, almost 4 years in fact. We had to start the list off with Rag'n'Bone man, well because he just rules. I was sitting in my apt on 34th street (yes I know, right near the annoying tourist trap of the Empire State building) , and this video came on Youtube randomly while I was watching other cat videos probably and the entire vibe just caught my attention- I knew 'Human' was going to rule and people were going to catch on. The next time this guy comes into town for a show or maybe performing at some Z100 private show, or at some swanky NYC SoHo Loft Event , I gotta get myself there! What did you guys think of the list below? there were a few others that definitely caught my eye, Coldplay's new record, and a bunch of local Delancey St. lower east side bands that wouldn't be relevant to the majority of you guys, but this is a good start and if I had to limit it to just 5, these are the ones I would choose.

Rolling Stone takes a shot at EDM

EDM hasn't been around for as long as Rock n Roll's history and Rolling Stone Italia seems to want it to stay that way

Last week the magazine uploaded a video to its online website that, although seeming satirical, pokes fun at electric dance music. Rolling Stone claims that that kind of music will die, but guitar solos and rock anthems will not. The video goes on about how EDM is fake music and that there is nothing like Rock and there will never be anything to beat it so EDM should just stop now.

Rolling Stone focuses on the drug related aspects of EDM and how it almost always is associated with half naked girls, lollipops and neon lights. The "bad stuff." But what about the good?

Technology has made some intense advances and now artists can pull sounds from anywhere to make a catchy tune. Of course there are going to be some duds in a world where music is easy to make, but searching for the gold is worth it. The video targeting EDM most likely is to take a dig at the mainstream dance music people hear. While, yes, this is what most kids listen to, there is more to EDM than David Guetta and chicks dancing in daisy costumes. If you truly are a fan, or truly know your stuff, it doesn't seem like dance is going to be going anywhere soon.

Rock n Roll might still be around, but it's not what is focused on lately. Is that why the Rolling Stone rockers are mad? Maybe there will come a time where both rock and dance are both surpassed by something else. Either way, its likely are both here to stay.

We can only wonder if Rolling Stone Italia simply wanted to stir things up a bit. Maybe they don't really hate EDM but rather wanted to see what readers thought about the subject. Whatever the case, the video has gone viral and will probably be stirring up some debate in the near future.

What are we going to do with Bieber?

Justin, Justin, Justin. What's going on, guy? You seem to be quite the trouble maker these days.

If you haven't noticed, Justin Bieber's name has been surrounded by chaos lately. Just this past weekend he was booed on stage after only performing for an hour. He had gotten on the Buenos Aires stage an hour and a half late because of a day spent in the hospital. He wrote "food poisoning is #allbad" on his twitter to fans earlier with a picture of him and an IV drip.

Do we give him credit for still getting up on stage even for a little while? I guess so, but kid, what are you eating over there that keeps giving you food poisoning. Seems best to stay away from that, your fans need you.

This incident is following a handful of others on tour. A video surfaced of a woman videotaping a sleeping Bieber and tweeting money she allegedly was given by the singer. He has also been charged with graffiti in Brazil which could land him a year in jail if convicted. On top of that, his body guards allegedly assaulted a club's house photographer under Bieber's wishes.

It seems like our once angel-esque teen heartthrob is having some difficulties. C'mon, Justin quit it, we still want to beliebe in you.

Who doesn't like a good concert? The music is loud, it's live and your favorite artist is on stage... what could be better.

How about being front row while the music is loud, it's live and your favorite artist is on stage? It can actually get even cooler if you're Valentina Attard. This past weekend the 15-year-old wanted to take a picture of herself at a Beyonce concert.

Next thing she knew, Beyonce was right behind her posing for a selfie with her. Attard wrote on her tumblr that she asked the singer to take the photo with her. After, she wrote that "it was such a blur i just remember her bending down to me and my friend and i just turned for the photo and wowoowow it was the best moment ever like she posed its crazy i wasnt even expecting her to look at my phone or notice me in the crowd."

While Attard was taking the picture, there is also video footage of Beyonce bending down mid song to pose with the girl. You can see it HERE at around 1:00.

The Slants

Boy bands are in again. One Direction, The Wanted, The... Slants. Yes, that's right, an all boy Asian-American band. The name is striking, it might even make you crack a smile, but The Slants don't care. They are all about breaking racial stereotypes.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark office doesn't feel the same way. The Slants have been denied access registering their name because the government believes the name to be offensive towards Asian-
Americans.

It's all about perspective though, The Slants see it in a completely different way. They think that their band name empowers instead of mocks. In an interview with Time Entertainment, founder Simon Tam says its a case of reverse racism. "In my opinion, the concern is a little misguided. We have people being offended on behalf of our community, yet they're denying us rights." Basically, what's the big deal?

Society has labeled and categorized different social groups forever. Prior to Asian, Americans used the term "Yellow" when speaking of a person of Asian decent. The Slants think that using an obvious term like "slant" which is associated with Asians is giving them the upper hand. Tam says, "It's empowering when people use it and embrace it as part of their identity. The words don't necessarily have to be loaded down with historical context. It's almost like social justice achieved through linguistic change." The Slants are saying GET OVER IT!

It's a matter of time until we get to see if The Slants' "stick-it-to-the-man-attitude" works in their favor. They don't seem to be giving up any time soon.

Hear her ROAR

Katy Perry has made us all wait for her new album Prism. Its been three years since Teenage Dream and Perry has finally unleashed her latest project. Not as playful as Teenage Dream, Prism still is full of catchy popular tunes that are sure to make it big on the radio. Not a full five stars but it's not half bad and will probably make you want to dance.

I mean, who doesn't like a little Katy Perry once in a while? "Roar" has already become a hit and it only came out a bit over a month ago. This is her fourth studio album and "Roar" is getting it off to a great start.

There was a little controversy around the song when it first appeared however. Sara Bareilles came out with her new single "Brave" right before Perry's new hit. When the two are played together the melodies are strikingly similar. The only people who seem to be upset about the coincidence are fans of Bareilles and Perry. When asked about it, Bareilles jokes and says ultimately her and Perry remain close friends-- that she's disappointed in her fans for promoting the drama.

Regardless of the similarities, Perry's "Roar" has been the one of the two songs to make it to the top. The single has hit #1.

Everything aside, Prism is bound to make you move and shake when put on full blast. Katy Perry's just got that something the people can't give up. Even after some drama-- she still makes it to the top.

Her hit 'Royals' is sarcasm at its best-- calling out major flaws in the music industry who boasts lyrics about a lavish lifestyle none of us will ever have. It's not a mockery however, just a spin on what everyone else is talking about. "Now, though, I'm obsessed with really high profile celebrities who get really f***ed up; I think you know who I'm talking about! I find it all so interesting, such tragedies that stem from being put on a pedestal," is what the singer says to Liza Darwin for Noisey about her fascination with celebs and their lives ultimately leading to lyrics.

Discovered at only 13 during a school talent show, Lorde is sure to win over most of the crowd in the future. She is sure to remain pop royalty as her music progresses. Will her music remain with the same joking tone when she herself becomes a mega star? Or will she remain grounded and strictly mesmerized by the madness?

Miley Cyrus Takeover

It feels like Miley Cyrus is everywhere lately. Twerking, showing off her body and breaking records. Whatever she's doing, it seems to be working. People can't take their eyes off of her.

With the help of social media, there were over 100 million views of her video 'Wrecking Ball' in just six days. The 20-year-old singer is constantly on Twitter making sure her following fans keep up. The video is controversial as for the most part features a nude Cyrus swinging on a 'wrecking ball.' Sources say the song is aimed towards former fiance Liam Hemsworth, the two publicly split this week.

The deluxe version of Bangerz features five different selections of cover art. In recent racy fashion, one of those covers is of a nude Miley. Fans are encouraged to vote for their favorite cover with the winner being the final deluxe version. Voting starts at 3 p.m. today and the winning cover will be revealed on October 14th.

Fall Out Boy is Back!

On Monday April 15 the band released their first album in 5 years.

The band split up in 2008 because they wanted to concentrate on other projects, but now they're back!

'Save Rock And Roll' is Fall Out Boy's fifth studio album in 10 years and hardcore fans should be grateful because the band didn't turn over a completely different leaf.

The band released new pop-rock material but you can still recognize the original fun Fall Out Boy sound. They also proved they evolved professionally during their years of absence, especially on the song 'Save Rock And Roll' where they managed to include Elton John and Courtney Love.

The band did have bad luck on their release date, since it was the same date as the Boston explosion.

They announced on their Facebook page that this day would've been a day of celebration but they'd now like to send their thoughts and prayers to the victims in Boston and donate the proceeds from their upcoming Boston show to the victims.

Paramore Album Release

On April 9 Paramore released their self-titled album 'Paramore'. It's the band's fourth studio album and their first since their guitarist Josh Farro and drummer Zac Farro left the band in 2010.

Yesterday, a week after the album release the band announced their album hit #1 in the charts, which makes 'Paramore' their first #1 album.

This may please or displease a lot of people, since the band has been accused of losing their alternative rock sound. It's true the band's current sound is different from their past albums but don't say you didn't see it coming.

The only real alternative rock album Paramore ever made was their least popular and first album 'All We Know Is Falling' in 2005. Every album they released since, contained more and more poppy ballads each time.

It's not only Hayley Williams's popular red shades that turn brighter every album, it's also the music and the lyrics.

The lyrics of their first single 'Emergency' were much darker : 'I've seen you cry way too many times when you deserve to be alive'. Their current lyrics contain much more cute butterflies and pink mani-pedi's.

Quiet Company in Williamsburg

'Quiet Company' performed at the Knitting Factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Sunday March 24.
This band wasn't the only one entertaining the audience that night, there were three other bands playing: Prawn, Gates and Caravela.

It was obvious the bigger part of the audience traveled to Williamsburg to see the Austin based band 'Quiet Company', since there was great interaction between the band and the audience.
The band made sure their fans sang along every word and danced to their indie-alternative songs.
This made their performance more alive than their last New York City gig.
It's clear the band has been on tour for a long period of time since the band was better prepared and the songs were better rehearsed.
This could have something to do with their SXSW performance a couple weeks ago.
Also, the band has a new album coming up, due next month!

American Academy Of Arts And Letters welcomes Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan is to be honored in the American Academy Of Arts And Letters and he's the first rock musician to be elected.

The American Academy Of Arts And Letters is an elite group of only 250 artists, which also includes Meryl Streep, Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese. The organization only admits new members once existing members have died.
Besides Bob Dylan also six other artists have been selected this year: artists Richard Tuttle, Terry Winters, Luc Tuymans, writer Damon Galgut, novelist Ward Just and architect Rafael Moneo.

The organization first wasn't sure to elect the musician for his poetry or his music. The 71 year-old Dylan wrote more than 500 songs in his career, including success hits like: 'Masters Of War', 'Blowin'In The Wind' and 'Like A Rolling Stone'.

Milow @ Rockwood Music Hall NYC

Belgian sensation 'Milow' alias Jonathan Vandenbroeck performed at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City last night.

With only 50 attendees it was a total different scene than 'Milow' concerts in Europe, selling out a venue 3 nights in a row.

'Milow' moved to Los Angeles, California to promote his career in the U.S. where he's not a superstar but just one of the many musician trying to sell their music.

He promoted his music with old- as well as new songs. The old songs the audience knew by heart and sang along as loud as they could. The first one was his 2007 break-through hit single "You Don't Know", followed by his cover of Justin Timberlake and 50Cent "Ayo Technology". He did not mimic 50Cent by rapping but transformed the song into a up-tempo acoustic piece.

The Beatles or One Direction

Whether you like it or not boy bands make their comeback every decade.

In the sixties people listened to The Beatles and in 2012 people listen to One Direction.

In between you find successful boy bands such as Beastie Boys, Take That and Backstreet Boys.

You can see, not much has changed over the years especially for teenage girls.

Not only are the boys pinned on every wall in teenage girls’ bedroom; they are one of the few artists who make a lot of profit out of selling albums.

Concerts, albums, digital downloads, posters, t-shirts, … you name it, the boy bands sell it and make good money!

For example today’s hype, One Direction released their second album within eight months in November.

And their second album is just as successful as the first one.

Let me put it this way: lose your electric guitar and cool drum skills, learn to dance and sing and start a boy band!

EU Artists to Watch

In the beginning of January the 16th edition of Eurosonic Noorderslag Conference took place in Groningen, The Netherlands.

The international music industry discovered new European artists; some of them might as well be the next best thing.

Our top three:

· Jake Bugg: the 20 year-old British singer-songwriter might’ve been slightly stoned but he fulfilled all his duties. He played not one but two great shows and proved that he’s worthy to be in this list. Debut album: October 12 2012

· Andy Burrows: former drummer of Razorlight and We Are Scientists showed the world that he doesn’t need a band to be great. His debut album is amazing and so was his performance. Debut album: October 19 2012

· Palma Violets: this British indierockband is the total opposite of One Direction. After a smashing concert at Eurosonic, the music industry immediately knew they belonged in this list and everybody will know soon enough.

Debut album: February 25 2013.

Event Recap: Saturday of Governor’s Ball 2011: A music festival for us?

If you live in the NYC area and want to go to a big music festival, you’re usually in for a haul.

Coachella is in the West Coast’s desert, Bonnaroo- the middle of nowhere, Tennessee, Lollapalooza- the middle of the country, and although I’m pretty sure Jay-Z is actually from New York, his “Made in America” festival will kick off this year in Philadelphia.

There is Governor’s Ball, though.

GovBall 2012

The fledgling festival just had its second run this past weekend on Randall’s Island on the East River.

It still has a long way to go towards becoming "the premier big festival of New York City”, the long-term vision from its founders, but it was certainly bigger and better than last year; extended to two days and drawing over 21,000 each day.

In an earlier blog I gushed with expectations from the volunteer experience I had last year- a duty that at times bordered VIP access to the festival.

This year, volunteering was less glamorous for the one day (Saturday) of the festival I went to. Areas bordering on artist relations had, since last year, been outsourced to professionals. The festival itself, though, proved an event I wouldn’t have minded paying the full ticket price to attend.

It was a completely balmy weekend to picnic, play croquet, fill up on some food truck food, and of course, dance around in the grass to some loud electronic music whilst the sun shined.

Street Style @ GovBall 2012

Taking tickets as a volunteer meant missing Major Lazer and Santigold which was sort of a bummer. Standing at the festival entry for a few hours with EventBrite, though, was an eyeful of street style that some awesome sets later in the day made well-worth the time.

Kid Cudi, Saturday’s finale, was a main attraction. It perhaps disappointed though, for anyone other than the hardcore Cudi fan, as it followed a headlining set by Passion Pit that was unexpectedly awesome for just about everyone.

Kid Cudi @ GovBall 2012

Instead of shying away from huge commercial hits like “Sleepyhead”, which you can only imagine the Boston band is growing tired of playing, Passion Pit’s set patched together seamlessly outsize anthems with material off their new album due in July.

You didn’t need to know a word of their lyrics to enjoy their whole show. The encore performance of “Little Secrets" was a highlight.

Kid Cudi had probably the most star power when he took the stage, but it was unfortunately diffused over a long set of slower jams like “Man on the Moon”, and tiring series of call-and-response.

His slow set, plagued by technical difficulties, was a bit of a tease for a crowd that was practically pulsating from the start, “Crush a bit, little bit” (the opening lines of greatest hit, “Pursuit of Happiness”).

Fortunately, a lot of the crowd and I had enough of their fill on good music and good times to feel satisfied leaving before the Cudi set even ended. We may never know if he ever played "Pursuit" for the GovBallers that night.

Complaints aside, big names like Cudi at GovBall leave me pretty hopeful for next year, as well as the prospect of a premier music festival that's based in New York City.

New York Rapper A$AP Rocky

Admittedly, the chants of sassy and competitive Catalpa Fest promoters who called out, “Snoop Dog, A$AP Rocky, The Black Keys, Same Place, Better Music!” as the ferry from Gov Ball unloaded, didn’t really make the future of NYC music festivals sound too bad either.

Walt Whitman to Dr. Seuss- I can’t help it, I love a good rhyme, and
Curren$y’s “The Stoned Immaculate”, one of this year’s biggest rap
releases, delivers on all metered counts.

In his own words, on “Take You There”, the New Orleans rapper says,
“If you ain't heard of me…guessin that your internet services ain't
working too good at y’alls pad”

Curren$y’s quip on internet service is almost lost in the wordplay odyssey
that is “Immaculate” (elsewhere he raps; ‘I chase that money like it
said something about my momma, I chase that money like it
key-scratched my impala), but as an intern at a firm that heads Web 2.0 campaigns for entertainment clients, it’s a verse I can definitely appreciate.

Curren$y’s lyrics and trajectory into mainstream fame show an uncanny awareness that; the web, especially social media sites are an effective place to build a fan base and get heard (the core concept of PR 2.0).

He’s only been signed to the Warner Brother label for a year, but a large fanbase, ahem, adherents to the “jet code” has sustained the 31-year-old rapper’s career, spanning multiple labels, since his 2002 debut.

They eat up songs like #Jetsgo; the lead track of 2011’s “Weekend at Burnie’s” (Warner Brothers).

#Jetsgo is a lyrically crafted and bumpable rap song bearing a title, like the stage name Curren$y, that becomes somewhat refracted when communicated through anything other than a laptop or iPhone.

The chorus of #Jetsgo consists of Curren$y literally rapping; “yeah, doe, pound-sign jetsgo”.

It’s a way catchier song than you’d think and naturally compels his listeners to switch tabs from iTunes to Twitter, where they have made Curren$y’s #Jetsgo motto a perennial trending topic.

The song probably wasn’t contrived as a mastermind social media marketing strategy (Curren$y says between the #Jetsgo chorus his lyrics are “far too intricate to be made up”) but a close look certainly shows they may have worked as one.

Curren$y seems well on his way to fame of Ke$ha proportion.

$15 GovBall Tickets?!

The Governor’s Ball Music Festival is an awesome and fairly new addition to the New York City area music festival circuit.

Last year, a variety of musical acts (Mac Miller, Empire of the Sun, Pretty Lights, and Das Racist to name a few) entertained the crowd. The festival highlights all kinds of music with the one condition that you can dance to every act.

Kid Cudi was just added to this year’s lineup of big names like Modest Mouse, Passion Pit, Santigold, and Beck, as well as up-and-coming acts like Cults.

There are no overlapping sets, so one of the good things about Gov Ball is that concert-goers intent on seeing more than one of these great artists don’t have to make any tough decisions.

Two-day passes are $190, a pretty good value when you look at the full lineup. Personally, though, I think the best way to go is to volunteer and pay just a $15 processing fee for entry to the show. It’s something I did last year and plan to again because it was a great experience. I saved a ton on the ticket, got to see all my favorite acts, and even meet and take pictures with a lot of them in the course of volunteering!

If you don’t mind following the rules all day, missing a few sets and trading in your festival-best outfit for a staff t-shirt, it’s definitely the way to go.

The festival will be held June 23-24 this year on Randall’s Island. A complete set list and more information on volunteering can be found at the Gov Ball website.

Radiohead Debuts New Album

Radiohead released their new album "The King of Limbs" today on the bands website, a day earlier then planned. A wonderful gift, but not a surprise to Radiohead fans who are fully aware that the band is about the music and about getting it out there to the masses.

The full album, including an MP3 download, 2 vinyl records, a CD and tons of artwork, is available for $48 but fans are also able to purchase just a downloadable version for a cool $9. Now we all can wait with bated breathe until the new tour is announced...can't be long now!

NYC Based Singer Songwriter Dion Roy Plays Singapore

NYC based singer songwriter Dion Roy is currently playing a week long showcase at the soon to be legendary TAB Music Complex in Singapore. This is Dion's first tour in Singapore, and based on his recent Facebook posts he seems to be having a blast. Dion's Singapore tour is in support of his latest EP "The Nearest Light" which debuted in June 2010 and reached #8 on the iTunes singer-songwriter album charts.

Only back from his summer tour for a short while before heading off to Singapore, word is that there may be another west coast tour coming soon (unconfirmed at this time). That should certainly have west coast fans going crazy, as it's been quite some time since Dion made his way out west.

The West Coast certainly is calling though. The new EP has been really well received and tracks have already been licensed for use in Hollywood on MTV's "The Real World" and "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" on E! Additionally Dion's song "The Wave" from the new EP was featured twice the other week on an episode of the show "Bad Girls Club Miami" on Oxygen, check out the promo clip here (listen from second 40 to the end).

Dion Roy Single "Want's It" Appears on Tosh.0

If you happened to catch last Wednesday's episode of Tosh.0 on Comedy Central then you definitely heard the Dion Roy single "Want's It" from his debut album "Gallery".

Dion also has a new EP out, "The Nearest Light", which debuted on June 23rd. The new EP reached the #8 spot on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter music charts.

Tosh.0 is currently Comedy Centrals highest rated show (higher then Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert), and Wednesday night's episode was the networks best performance since The Chappelle Show in 2004.
