Civilization Wars is a 2D online flash game not to be confused with Sid Meier’s popular PC series civilization. On the main menu you select from normal or hard modes, and on each of these you can see three stages, each one gets progressively harder than the last, and to unlock the next in the series you must complete the last. This game boasts terrific longevity and is not a game you will be able to complete in one sitting, so instead of starting over again every time which would make no sense developers have added a save and load button.

The first levels you come across are a tutorial; these are handy to play because they give you a feel of the game itself. Your strategy is to capture every building on the map, and to do this you must select your people and send them into battle. To assist you along the way you can regenerate your people by sending them into buildings. Other buildings replenishing your mana, which helps for magic attacks and some, will just act as a defence barrier between you and your enemy.

To see how many troops are in each one of your buildings, there is a small number above the building itself. To use these troops to attack an enemy building click on it, then drag and drop a building (or a selection of buildings) onto an enemy barracks. When you do this you will see your troops leave your building and enter the enemy buildings to battle. There are two outcomes here, either you are victorious and therefore, will gain the rights to the building or your adversary will slay all your troops, leaving you shorthanded and in danger.

Sometimes you can use all your troops and it is still not enough, so it is time to bring on the spells of magic to help you. You will find that the further you progress through the game, the more spells you unlock for use on harder levels. There are also a selection of other upgrades including upgrades to your troops attack and defences.

As you progress through the game you will come across some boss stages, however, these are no ordinary bosses like kings or knights, but instead are colossal animals. These animals bring a massive test to the game because they are particularly hard to defeat. If you find that you cannot defeat a stage, then you can go back to a previous battle to gain more experience. This is handy if you need to do it, but for a better gaming experience I suggest you try and defeat the stage without any help, even though it may not seem like it you can overcome all of the levels.

Unlike some other flash strategy games, where play is often one dimensional, Civilization Wars requires a lot of thought and imagination. If you are an avid strategy gamer you could do much worse than Civilization Wars.

Road to Riches 2 marks the second outing in this well-received time management game series. This time, you play the part of a guy fresh out of the army and who wants to make it big in the trucking business. You get to manage his trucking customers, contracts, employees, trucks and more in this fast-paced game!

The story of Road to Riches 2 begins with the main character John leaving the army and trying to find a way to earn money. His brother-in-law lends him a truck to help him get started, and John decides to try turning this into a profitable trucking business. And this is where you come in; your job is to help John manage his business efficiently in order to expand and turn his one-truck home business into a huge trucking empire.

The game starts out pretty slow, as you spend the first two levels learning the game controls and how to pick up and deliver goods (which isn’t difficult; almost everything involves clicking a button). You will spend this first part of the game watching John drive his single truck from customer to customer as he slowly earns enough cash to expand his business. Thankfully, there is a fast-forward button to speed up this boring “tutorial” phase.

The basic trucking jobs involve you picking up goods from one location and delivering them to another. You could visit a potential customer throughout the city, or you could wait for a plane, train or boat to come in with a fresh load. You can even get trucking jobs via phone. Things become even more interesting once you have more trucks and you need to allocate trucks to delivery orders in order to maximize your efficiency.

Other lessons learnt during this early phase include deciding which delivery jobs to accept and which ones to reject. It’s not very efficient to accept a job that requires you to go all the way across town, especially when your next jobs are nowhere near that location. You also learn other basics such as maintaining your truck before it breaks down, and giving your driver a coffee break before he passes out.

The gameplay becomes more interesting and more complex once you earn enough money to buy a truck depot. Once you get your depot, you have a proper business and many more options are available to you. Don’t worry though; the new features won’t all come into play at once. Each feature will be introduced as you progress through the levels. But from this point on, you will be able to manages your company’s finances, management, human resources and customers.

Under finances, you will be able to manage your expenditures including your advertising budget. The management category involves deciding what type of goods are more profitable to truck, and also lets you see what your competitors are doing. Human resources involve controlling your truck drivers and making sure they have enough trucks of a variety of makes that can transport the goods. You also manage your clients and long-term delivery contracts via the customer category.

The atmosphere in Road to Riches 2 is reasonably well presented, though it does feel a bit dated for a game that is launched in the year 2010. The graphics aren’t spectacular, but they do convey the feel and atmosphere of the trucking and small town business pretty well. The soundtrack doesn’t stand out too much, but doesn’t seem boring or monotonous either.

As it will quickly become apparent as you try the game, you will fing that Road to Riches 2 isn’t a basic time management game. The various economic and business options available to you turns this game into more of a business simulation game with fast-paced time and resource management elements thrown in. If you like business simulations and don’t mind the slightly dated graphics, then this game will be worth your while.

Anyone that’s interested in online investing games, stock market simulations, investing contest or the stock market in general online investing games are great. I also can’t stress enough how much that investment contest helped me to prepare for trading my own money, it’s quite ridiculous how much I learned for free. Their forums are amazing for kicking idea’s around & helping you to develop new strategies as well as keeping up to date with what’s going on in the markets.

Microsoft Project Natal will be released in November 2010, just in time for the Xmas rush. Natal is an Xbox 360 add-on which tracks user’s movement through a sophisticated camera system that users to interact with the console without a hand held controller. The sensor, which sits on top of your TV like an alien antenna, has a combination of depth, motion and colour sensors which track the motion of your body as you move around in front of it. Objects, environments and characters in the game world will respond directly to your bodies movements as you gyrate wildly around your lounge.

In terms of gaming possibilities Natal will turn your existing console into a Wii on super strong steroids and then some. We can expect game developers to pitch in with big titles based upon what’s proved so popular with the Nintendo. Music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band will no doubt make an early appearance as well as most of the sports games football, winter sports and keep-fit programs for example. And all without purchasing the expensive balance board.

I also think shooters and RPG’s, which have failed to make an big impression on the Wii platform will also become very popular with Natal enabled gamers. The combined processing power and graphical performance of the 360 will make this type of game irresistible to the more dedicated 360 gamer.

The technology will also enable the Xbox 360 to appeal to a whole new type of adult audience, I think this is one area where Microsoft will push hard with Natal marketing. I predict that we’ll see a rash of educational software releases that are Natal compatible, fancy learning to Ballroom Dance with your partner and coach on screen? What about snowboarding, baseball or surfing? And it doesn’t stop with sports, thanks to Natal’s powerful scanning technology your Xbox could teach you to cook, to paint or even to take better photographs.

Natal could have important implications in medical convalescence; for example physiotherapy or guided self-massage and accessibility for the disabled could be become another important feature.

Starcraft is one of the best selling and popular games of all time and has spawned games such as Warcraft whilst captivating and creating an entire generation of real time strategy gamers.

I first played Starcraft in 1999 and was hooked from day one. The incredible gameplay and challenging artificial intelligence had such an impact on me that I still play regularly.

I learnt to play the game with a friend who, in his great wisdom, told me that humans were the most destructive, cunning and ruthless of all the races in the universe and to succeed in this great game – we had to play the Terran (Human Exiles, who have been exiled from Earth by the ruling “Confederacy of Man” ) as opposed to the Insect like Zerg and the Psychic Humaniod’s called The Protoss.

For those that do not know the game, it is a real-time strategy game, set during a war between three races; The Terrans, Zerg and The Protoss.

The Zerg are creepy, insect like creatures, that have no other purpose in life, but to breed and consume. While Protoss are a humanoid type of freak of nature, with psychic abilities and dangerous technology. They are only interested in furthering their own way of life; and when Zerg finally falls, they will turn on the Terran.

When the first official expansion pack was released, I nearly wet myself with excitement. Broodwars introduced the Medic and the very under-rated air to air unit, The Valkyrie.

The Medic, as it’s name suggests, has the ability to heal surrounding personal; as well as restore mobility to locked down mechanical units and blind enemy mechanical units with an optic flare.

A great trick is to have an attack force of 50 Terran Marines and 25 Medics. Walk the medics in front, as they heal each other as soon as they take damage.

Research better armour and firepower at the engineering bay and upgrade as fast as possible.

In fact, I think that this is the key to surviving the first wave of a Zerg attack, which usually outnumbers you greatly, considering how fast those disgusting creatures reproduce.

I try and build two barracks and two engineering bays and then belt out as many upgraded marines as possible. Stick them in bunkers, with a supply depot directly in front of the bunker and you will be able to fend off even the most ferocious of onslaughts. Place 3 SCV (worker and builder) unit’s directly behind the bunker and have them continuously repairing the bunker. Your marines will make short work of most units.

Don’t forget to build as many missile turrets as possible, as they will both protect you from airborne attacks, as well as detect cloaked units.

Starcraft is a beautifully created and magnificently programmed real time strategy game and after 12 years of exclusively playing Terran, I have at least another 50 years of enjoyment to look forward to. With Starcraft 2 being released, make that 75 years.
