Meet Winona Rasheed, prolific children’s author, and newest member to the New Line Press family!

Winona Rasheed is the author of the upcoming children’s book from New Line Press, “A New Home for Her Cubs.”

Winona lives in Washington DC with her husband of 33 years. She and her husband have raised six children. Her 13 grandchildren add a lot of inspiration to the stories that she writes.

She has always loved writing, and when she took a course in writing for children from The Institute of Children’s Literature, her passion for story telling grew.

Children have always held a special place in her heart; children were always around, as they filled her house and surrounded her in the day care center where she worked as an assistant teacher.

The experience of working with children, raising them; writing stories, and creating books for them; leads Winona to believe that this is her purpose in life is giving to the children of the world, and giving back with one book at a time. Children, writing, editing, and creating books are the things that put the spark in her life. Education, experience, patience, and a chance to excel have bought her to where she is today.

I received an early morning email from my editor letting me know that my short story, An Inconvenient Mistress, went to #1 Best Selling book on Mobipocket.com.

There has been so much in the news lately (isn't there always!) about mistresses. John Edwards (former running for President politician), Jon Gosselin (TV fame), Mel Gibson (left his wife of a gazillion years for a young Russian, perhaps pregnant?) honey. There are about a million mistress cases with a zillion more to come, and throughout time, the public sits in fascination of this societal norm.

I pounded out An Inconvenient Mistress one day when the power went out and sitting outside on our deck overlooking the turquoise sea, I asked someone (a man) why do men have mistresses? The response - "because they're convenient."

So I started to write "An Inconvenient Mistress" with the thought in mind that mistresses are convenient, however I soon felt that mistresses are anything but convenient. Thus "An Inconvenient Mistress" was born.

I hope you enjoy the read.

Another day, another new Kindle

Kindle News!

While mulling over the just unveiled Kindle DX, we at New Line Press are not sure whether to be delighted or annoyed. Technology for e-readers changes in what seems by the time you receive one electronic reading device it soon becomes extinct while newer versions hold more books, has longer battery life, larger reading area, the list goes on and on.

The one thing we have been waiting but have not seen yet is a color screen. We half expect Apple, Plastic Logic, or Sony to be releasing a color screen soon. Some people remark that when reading a book, the pages are not in color anyway however, taking that into consideration, we venture to say color screens will soon be forthcoming. Probably right after we have purchased the latest e-reader!

James Halon of New Line Press Book Publisher in Pine Grove says the Amazon Kindle is the wave of the future.

The author and publisher gave a presentation on the device, which allows people to read electronic books, to Amador County residents at the Jackson branch of the county library recently. Halon brought his own Kindle to the presentation and held a question and answer forum for the nearly 20 people who attended.

Amazon Kindle is a software and hardware program created by Amazon.com launched in the United States in November 2007. The device's screen is 3.6 inches wide and 4.8 inches tall and displays the page of a book in electronic form; to turn the "page," one simply presses a button. It is used without a computer and can hold up to 1,500 novels, Halon said. With the purchase of a specific disk, it can hold up to 25,000 novels. Amazon.com has some e-books available for free, and most others cost about $9.99.

"It's kind of the wave now," Amador County assistant librarian Linda Laolagi said of the Kindle. "It would really benefit students. Think of all the kids who could put their textbooks on it instead of carrying around all those books in their backpacks."

"There was a good turnout," Amador County librarian Laura Einstadter said of Halon's presentation. Some people brought their Kindles with them and were able to ask Halon questions about the device.

"I think it's something a lot of people are looking at purchasing," she added. "I'm not sure the (Amador County Library) is in the position to purchase one, but a lot of other libraries are purchasing them and circulating them - they're getting a good response."

According to the Amazon.com Web site, a new Kindle 2, the latest version of the device, costs $359; used Kindles cost $225 on the site.

Of Halon's presentation and turnout, Einstadter said it was nice to see so many people interested in technology.

Halon is the vice president of New Line. Like many of the bigger publishers, New Line is also selling its books via electronic book form, he said. It saves a lot of money, Halon added, and is very green.

"We don't have to do the actual shipping or storing or publishing of all the papers," he said.

New Line went e-book last year, he said. The first book the company made available electronically was Catherine Burr's novel, "Silicon Secrets." Now several are available in the e-book format.

"It works sort of like a cell phone," he said. "You don't have to be at a computer. It runs on a battery."

Halon, who uses his Kindle often, says he recharges the battery about every three days. "The average person would probably need to recharge the battery once a week."

One of its downfalls, he said, is that it doesn't light up at night. Amazon.com does sell an attachable lamp, Halon said.

Halon, author of several novels, says one of the reasons he likes using Kindle is that he can also download his own manuscripts onto the device and work on them via the Kindle keyboard.

"I can see why some people say they are not going to make the change (to Kindle)," Halon said, adding that some people just really enjoy the traditional book format. Many people, however, will enjoy the benefits of the device, he said.

"Once a person sees this and holds this in their hands, they're going to wonder why they didn't have one sooner," Halon said.

Libraries Green with Kindle

From sea to shining sea, public libraries are turning to green methods for patrons to check out books.

For some time many libraries have offered e-books via digital downloads or even books delivered to your in-box of your email. Now libraries across the country are adding the newest electronic reading device, the Kindle from Amazon.com.

One of the first libraries to add Kindle is Howe Library in Hanover, New Hampshire, which carries the Amazon.com Kindle reader for library users to check out for typically a period of one week.

In March 2009, the Frank L. Weyenberg Library of Mequon and Thiensville in Wisconsin added the Kindle 2 for check out for their library patrons.

In Rancho Mirage, California, the public library offers Kindles for check out, which the library has preloaded with books from the New York Times Bestseller List.

New Line Press books are available for Kindle readers in addition to other digital formats, including Sony readers, iphones, and Mobipocket.com.

Protestors to Rally Against Author's Guild

According to a press release from the National Federation of the Blind, a call has been set out for protestors to rally outside Author's Guild headquarters in New York City on April 7th, 2009, noon to 2:00 PM, and at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, April 25-26, 2009.

Behind the protest is a group called Reading Rights Coalition, who are protesting the recent decision by Amazon to allow for the disabling of the text-to-speech feature on the Kindle 2, a wireless reading device that was recently released by Amazon.com. The decision to relent on the text-to-speech feature was apparently made after the Author's Guild voiced complaints that the Kindle 2 violated rights of authors and publishers.

New Line Press embraces reading - for everyone, and as long as text-to-speech is an option and not disabled, we will continue to allow the text-to-speech available for our books.

Last night's Kindle talk at the Amador County Library in Jackson, California, was a kindle success. Many people came out to learn about the new Kindle 2 reader and all of its capabilities.

The talk was given by New Line Press author James Halon. Audience participation contributed to the exchange of information and knowledge regarding the latest technology in reading.

In attendance were New Line Press author Larry Wall, from Seattle, who signed copies of his book, Random Acts of Mischief, and Beverly Rose Hopper of Amador County.

New Jim Morgan Novel Announced
