Well, just about every song. We can't be too sure about this sort of thing. We did do a Christmas Special in 2008, which is now considered a "lost episode". Seriously, we can't find it anywhere. We also played a ton of tunes in the background that helped the show flow smoothly. But as far as the featured songs on our shows are concerned, this is the big list. And what a mighty list it is. Jim and I played over 1,000 songs over our two year run, which I think is pretty amazing. There are a couple of repeats, but only because those songs are just that good that they needed to be played three or more times. When I told Jim about this, he laughed and said, "I bet all the Pela and Mountain Goats songs are mine." Truth is: yes Jim, they were all yours. Good times, though. Okay, here's the massive list.

Man, it’s been a while…

Never Mind the Mainstream has been done for over a month now. Actually, it’s been more like a month and a couple of weeks. These past few weeks have been the craziest weeks of my life. I mean, the huge thing was that I graduated from Kutztown University and had to say goodbye to the school and community that was my home for the past four years. That was weird. Leaving Kutztown and the great friends I’ve made over the years was not easy. There have been so many memories made there in that small town. I think I can go ahead and say the stereotypical phrase, “college was the best time in my life.” The thing is – it truly was. I’m not lying. In every sense of the word, it was great. A paradise, almost. But now my four year vacation is over. Life hurries on. Like a rolling stone.

Since moving back, I’ve been adjusting to living at home with my family again. In most ways, it’s the same as it ever was, except now my parents expect more from “college graduates”, meaning my brothers and I have regressed into little kids and must obey “the rules” again. My hometown, Whippany, is just as beautiful as ever this time of the year. In fact, all of New Jersey is very green, and sunny most days. Childhood friends are still around. Some are getting “real” jobs, while others are still in school, and then there are a select few who have decided to just do “nothing” for a while. Either way, it’s great to see familiar faces. Some people have changed, but that’s what college and four years away from home will do to people. Regardless, I’m not discouraged or upset. That’s life.

I’m also adjusting to my new role in life as a member of the “real world”. I’m an intern at a youth sports media company, Youth1 (youth1.com). Basically, I write a handful of articles (both original and cited) per day, promote them with the company’s social media tools, and add files to the website’s directory. It’s a lot of work, but mainly because it’s a start-up company. It’s not so bad though. My bosses are really cool, I work with my older brother, and the town where I work in, Montclair, is really scenic. I like to walk around at lunch and see the sights. There’s actually a really cool theater here. It’s called the Wellmont, and I saw The Shins there last May. I’m halfway done with my internship there, but we’ll see what happens once I complete it. Maybe they’ll pick me up as a full-time, paid employee. The question is, “do I really want to write about little league and sports equipment as a career?” I don’t think so. But hey, I need to start somewhere, or so says every older person I’ve talked to about it.

Since I’m doing so much writing during the day, I’m finding it hard to do anything else on the weeknights and weekends but sleep and relax. I also work on the weekends at Jersey Mike’s Subs, which is a giant headache and not worth the frustration anymore (it’s more of a high school job, anyway). I was talking to a friend of mine a while back; a good dude who graduated from KU in the Professional Writing department with me this semester. He also interned with me at Youth1 (although he’s done now). He told me that he didn’t want writing to become stale for him after graduation. I agreed. Writing these articles, day in and day out, about something I’m not even passionate about, is killing my interest in journalism. Still, I know this internship won’t last forever. It’ll be over this time next month, so I’m just going to stick it out. Once it’s all over, I think I’ll be like some of those select few acquaintances who will just do “nothing” for a couple of weeks.

I’ve been meaning to post something on this blog for a long time, but like I said, I’m stretched pretty thin over my jobs (as well as my on-line Professional Seminar course, which is a waste of time; and of course, my “me” time). But I really wanted to get some thoughts down in text about college radio; some thoughts about broadcasting; being an on-air personality for so long; the future of radio (my future in radio); and rock music in general. It’s certainly a lot to cover, but I’ll see what I can muster up. Just bare with me, this may not be the cleanest and most organized piece in my blogging history.

Going back to what I said first, Never Mind the Mainstream is retired. I think about it constantly, but mostly on Fridays, around six o’clock, just as the show would have been starting up. I think about the show when I hear new music (and there’s a lot of really great music coming out lately) that I think would fit our show’s theme. I think about the show when I listen to the mainstream stations in my car or when I turn on MTV, Vh1, or any other “music television network”. It’s on my mind because it was such a big part of my life when I was a college student. As my co-host Jim Adair has claimed several times over and over again, Never Mind the Mainstream is (was) the highlight of our week. We got to spin some of the best alternative and independent music known to man. The songs we played made us sing and dance, and prompted some truly interesting conversations and debates. Our callers made us laugh to the point of tears and to the point of censorship on more than one occasion. We shared personal stories, music industry news, and a few drinks with friends and family inside that tiny little station in the basement of the student union building. From paying our dues the station, we got to witness live shows, attend awards banquets (still can’t believe we lost Best College Radio Show at the Philadelphia Achievement In Radio Awards in November), and promote our station and shows to the masses. We controlled a medium, and even though things got a little out of control at times, with all the banter and rants, it was still just a very original and liberating time. We had an amazing college radio experience. I don’t think most people who pursue a secondary education anywhere could say they had more fun than we did. It’s difficult to put it into words, but if you heard at least one show that we did over our two years doing Never Mind the Mainstream, you’d understand how excited we were about being disc jockeys.

Before Never Mind the Mainstream, I hosted a show by myself for a year called Alternative Minutes. That was like the awkward stage of my college radio life. I was all alone and ran out of ideas pretty early. However, I played around with spinning full albums, genre-specific themed shows, and shows with tunes by one artist or band. At the same time, I did a Friday morning show with station veteran Andy Palamara called Bacon & Eggs. That was a blast. We would yell at students walking into classes and had a few other fun segments (“Whacky Headlines”).

Before Alternative Minutes and Bacon & Eggs, there was the A.I.R.R. show. Alternative Indie Rock Radio, hosted by yours truly, alongside a very old man, Allen Reed (just kidding, but he did have like four years on me). This was my first taste of actual college radio, after the training sessions where I worked the boards on the daytime programming or when I sat in on other radio member’s shows. Allen liked to play a lot of cover songs, which prompted the “Allen Reed Memorial Of The Week” we spun every week on our show. He was also a giant Evanescence fan, which earned him a ton of grief and picking on from yours truly, Jim, and other radio station regulars. He was a great co-host, because he was easy to pick on. But like Jim and Andy, we worked well off each other.

All those shows had debuts and finales. All those shows had unorthodox incidents of randomness and debauchery. They all accumulated to my college radio experience. Broadcasting with those people during those shows have made me a better person, a more open, random and wild person. The times in between classes sleeping on the lobby’s couch or invading a younger DJ’s show are just some of the pop-in moments I loved the most at 88.3 FM KUR.

So now that it’s all over, I wonder what’s next. I know for Jim, he’ll continue being a student at KU, and he’ll take over my position as President of the station. I’m sure I’m leaving the airwaves in good hands. As for my manager, Mike Regensberger, who put up with so much of my insanity and bizarre ideas, will continue fighting for our station to receive an FCC license (which is a very long and aggravating process). The new promotion director will take my place and go even further with it. The new directors and leaders will inherit a station on the rise, a station with unbelievable potential.

I have a strongly desired goal/purpose, something that fully satisfies a wish (a dream). I’m going to be an on-air personality. Somewhere, somehow – I’m going to do it. Whether it is in New York City, Philadelphia, Newark, or Allentown – I will be heard. I will broadcast again. I will spin rock & roll, a genre of music that is coming back to the mainstream in a mighty push. I will discover new music that will make me sing, dance, move, think, and believe. I’ve never been more passionate about anything in my life. I think my experiences at Kutztown and KUR will certainly benefit me in the future. In fact, they already have. I get into a radio conversation with a stranger just about every week, and I have my openness and knowledge of the business to thank for it.

I’m going to start a new blog. I’m not sure what it will be called or what I’m going to do with it, but I know I won’t be posting as frequently as I had been on this one for the past two years. Jim will be joining me. I’m almost positive we’ll be moving to WordPress, because the both of us really can’t stand Blogger any longer. Writing cannot become stale for me, it cannot be a chore, and I will not let it. It was always be an escape and a canvas of my ideas and thoughts.

I have a future ahead of me. Or at least, I hope I do. Jim’s got one, too, for sure. As does everyone in KUR, at Kutztown, and every passionate young person around the world. No matter what I do or where I go, I’ll never forget my beginnings in college radio. I’ll never forget all those who turned to the left of the dial to hear my voice and the music that I thought deserved to be heard. I’ll be around, friends.

So ends Never Mind the Mainstream, the tiny college radio station show that blew up to capture the attention of so many people around the world (that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but hey, I'm on a roll). It's all over. Kaput. Done. D-d-d-done. I apologize for posting this almost two weeks after the show originally aired, but believe me, my post-college life has been just as intense as my college career was, only now I have to worry about my two jobs. Not fun. Enough about me, let's dive into the music. Just look at that playlist. If you've been an avid follower of NMTM since it's beginning, then there is no way in hell you would have expected us to choose and play the tunes that we did. There's a lot of classic rock, mixed in with some legendary alternative rock anthems and indie rock gems. It truly was a great "mixx". Being that it may have been my final radio gig ever (God, I really hope not), I decided to pull the plug on our normal format, and play what many people may or may not have expect from me: some of my favorite songs of all time. "Spirit Of '76," "Money For Nothing," "Light My Fire," and "I Saw Her Standing There". I could not survive without those hits. They mean the world to me and each one is backed with a compelling story. Jim matched up my choices with some solid picks of his own, and together, like always, we put out a terrific broadcast. Our callers were ecstatic to be on the air for the grand finale and we thank them more than they will ever know. We also want to thank those who stopped in (all our fellow on-air personalities and close friends) and those who messaged us on AOL Instant Messenger. As we've been saying since day one, our fans make our show the great product that it truly is. Jim, the new president of the station, will be on the airwaves with 88.3 FM KUR this summer, so make sure you check out the website for his dates and times. I will be working my tail off, trying to make it as a professional somewhere in the real world. "This one's optimistic." Jim and I would like to thank every single person, from the bottom of our hearts, who ever listened to our show, promoted our show, and/or believed in us. I can honestly say that college radio was the greatest part of my college tenor. The penultimate show (which for those who don't know what that means, it's our second to last show - ever!). And what a show it was. Jim Adair and myself understand that for a crunch-time show, there needs to be a kick-ass playlist. As we have both been raving about the new music that came out last month and now in this month, we spun only the best of the best in alternative rock on Never Mind the Mainstream. New tunes this week featured Gogol Bordello, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., Broken Social Scene, The National, Surfer Blood, (brand spankin' new) Tokyo Police Club, and Field Music. We were also graced with some of our favorite callers in the show's history, specifically Redneck Jeff, who revealed himself, after two years of persistent call-ins, to be my own twin brother. Not terribly shocking, but still amusing nevertheless. We got to play a whopping 23 song set and participated in some crazy college antics on the air. You had to hear it to believe it. Sorry for this being a day late (and a couple of bucks short).

Well folks, today was my final day of classes at this institution. And it's more than safe to say that it was my final "legit" day of classes of my life. Maybe sometime down the road of life, I'll attend a few seminars for my job, or I'll attend meetings and get assigned "homework", but this is definitely the end of what young people consider "classes". It's a bittersweet feeling, like with most growing-up-type events that happen to soon-to-be graduates. I can't believe I'm graduating in a week and a half. Where did four years go? I'll spare you what I said in my speech to all the members of 88.3 FM KUR on Tuesday's (final) meeting. That's wasn't an easy thing to get through. I'll write a HUGE post sometime after I graduate next Saturday about my feelings towards college radio, Never Mind the Mainstream and KUR specifically, and the "college rock" genre of the past four years. It should be pretty heartfelt. After final exams, I'm sure I'll be fed up with writing, but I'll muscle out something poignant for all of you. In the mean time, here's some great new music that came out since last Wednesday. Enjoy it with a beer and the anticipation of summer on the horizon, just like I am. Disregard my exclamation points for Interpol and Kele. I'm just really psyched to hear their new tunes.

It's been a while since I've done a straight forward news post, even thought I rarely do any hard reporting on this site anyway. You know, some the links I post here aren't even that specific to the term "indie rock". However, I do get most of these stories from web sites that appeal to an alternative rock audience, so I'll keep calling these posts "Indie Rock News". Some interesting developments have happened since last Thursday. Mainly a lot of buzz has been going around about this year's Coachella festival, which looks to have a better line-up than Bonnaroo. Sucks to be on the east coast. So there's that, and some unfortunate and untimely deaths, which isn't good. And hey, how about this volcano in Iceland? That thing really caused some travel problems. Deciding to do this while I wait for my over-charged laundry to finish it's cycle at the laundromat up the street.

How was everybody's 4/20? What a weird holiday, you know? Not like it's an official "holiday", but some people I know really do take off from school and work to celebrate. G4 Network was playing a marathon of stoner flicks and I saw a lot of red-eyed and hungry people roaming around town like zombies. Hey, wasn't Hitler born on 4/20? Just saying.

Returning to our normal time-slot (Fridays, 6-8 PM ET), Jim Adair and myself (Mike Pop) brought the best of yesterday's, today's, and tomorrow's alternative and indie rock to the college airwaves, only on 88.3 FM KUR. Last week's Saturday shift was a fun one-off show, but we really love our two hours on Friday nights (and we know you do, too). It was one our first shows in a long time that we were not graced with beautiful, sunny Spring weather. Instead we got hit with a booming thunderstorm and a pounding downpour. Good thing we broadcast in a basement. This week's show was as vibrant and uppity as The Thermals concert in Philadelphia the night before (Jim and I both attended, met the band, and were treated to a great punk rock setlist). So we gushed for a bit and retold some tales from that evening. Music-wise, we brought you the standard "Grade A" college rock we bring every week. New music featured The Black Keys, The Dead Weather, Pete Yorn, Fionn Regan, Toro Y Moi, and Slow Club. The "Cover" brought guilty pleasure Hall & Oats into the scene, the "Trunk" opened with an early 'Mats demo, and the "Boss-Tune" was my personal favorite Springsteen single of all time ("Gotta learn to live with whatcha' can't rise above!"). Another sunny Wednesday (so meet me at the cemetery gates). No, but really, this weather is really making for up for all the snow we took on in February here in the Northeast. It all seems like a distant memory now. Spring is in full bloom and now my groundskeeper wakes me up every Tuesday morning with his lawnmower. That's a clear sign that the seasons have changed. Things at KU are picking up academically, as I have my hands full with papers and projects and club events. Isn't senior year supposed to be easy? I guess not. This weekend marked the first ever Never Mind the Mainstream Saturday edition and Jim and I could not have been more pleased with how this landmark show turned out. The reason this was held on Saturday from 2-4 PM ET was because Friday night from 4-9:30 PM was 88.3 FM KUR's 5th Anniversary Party, in which alumni, young and old, came together to celebrate KUR's success. It was a great experience and we want to personally thank all of those who came out to support us. The cake was delicious, by the way. Onto the show. This week featured a handful of new tunes from the likes of The New Pornographers, The Boat People, Dr. Dog, The Strange Boys, and more. The "Punk Trunk!" came in early with The Heartbreakers and Hüsker Dü and two of their greatest tunes ever. "Boss-Tune" crushed it and "The Cover" showcased Nada Surf's ability to create epic covers. Jim and I were graced with some of our closest friends who were eager to get on the airwaves and talk about anything and everything from obtaining teaching degrees to bar advice. And we closed out the show with a scrambled sing-a-long to "Debaser" and left the station with a great feeling of accomplishment. A big thanks to all our listeners, callers, and messengers. It's a gorgeous Wednesday afternoon, high around 87 degrees here in lovely, green Kutztown, PA. A few weeks back, I wouldn't be saying this. My jackets have officially been shoved to the end of my closet and my sandals are now seeing the light of day, or more like the back of my feet and the ground. This kind of weather makes me want to skip all my classes, go swimming, and listen to songs that have the words "sun", "spring", or "warm," in their titles. After looking through my iTunes library, there's a surprisingly good amount of songs that those words fit into. Here's some new music for you on this beautiful hump day. Personally, I can't stop listening to the new Band Of Horses tune and "In The Sun" (ah) by She & Him.

Hey, folks. After making my rounds through the web's most prestigious web sites recently (news-related and music-related), I found some pretty unique links that I'd like to share. This could be a new segment, but it may not be. Things are getting a little wild here in Kutztown as I begin to wrap up my college career, so you'll have to excuse me for my lack of posting. I generalize a lot of things here nowadays. The show posts are still pretty tight, though. Anyway, here's what I found.

Old dogs can learn new tricks. This old saying could be said for Big Jim and myself, as our mighty tandem radio force took an unorthodox approach to our forty-first installment of NMTM. The approach: we planned nothing in advance. This is because of a few reasons. One being that we simply could not settle on a time and date earlier in the week to put the show together. Another being that I was too focused on comprehensive exams to give the show a fair amount of my week's attention. And last, we wanted to test ourselves, to see how we could manage a spur-of-the-moment playlist. Jim said it right when we were flying by the seat of our pants. The show, however, was stellar. It also started on time with the both of us ready for action (unlike an hour later, as predicted earlier in the week). Check out that list. We couldn't have added more variety, new music, and risky numbers if we had tried (Beat Happening isn't entirely radio friendly, but hey, that's why we're college radio). We spoke about how excited we are for the Spring because some of the biggest names in the world of independent music are releasing new material. That being said, we sampled some of that music this week: The Hold Steady, Tokyo Police Club, Broken Social Scene, and The National all shined on our program. We also spun a breed of alt-rock classics: Jane's Addiction, The Vaselines, Screaming Trees, The Smiths, and more. We also threw in some live tracks. And as always, our special segments were important in their own way. Thanks again for tuning in to most random show ever. Tune in next week for another great set.

Thank you everyone for hanging tight as we get the blog updated with it's new look. How about that new banner? It's not exactly "new", but it is longer than the previous one. How about sourcing our pictures, adding bigger pictures, sticking fewer labels on posts, and jotting down what we're listening to at the moment? Just something new, we'll see how it works. I've been a big advocate of Blogspot-bashing and I'll continue to do so just because it's so primitive and restricting. However, and here's the kicker, it's free, so we'll deal with it. World keeps on spinning.

We've got about five weeks remaining until we get into one of the most anticipated months of the year, music-wise. It's May. Here's a list of notable NMTM favorites that will be releasing albums in the month of May.
