It definitely was time to write a new post, I started to feel like I am becoming lazy...
I had a thought of writing about this possibility of generating an income online since a few days ago, and today I finally decided it's time to act in that matter. I came across the concept by following a banner, that stated something like" get paid to do what you are already doing - using search engines". So I was at least curious to see what that could mean. Could it really mean that you can actually get paid to simply search the web? The banner directed me to this website: scour.com.

The first impression of the website was more than good, it has a very nice interface and a clean design, easy to navigate around it. Before doing anything else, I studied the F.A.Q to see how the concept works. The website is actually a kind of search engine, that actually fetches results from your chosen search engines every time to enter a string in it's search box. The conclusion is that you enter any search term or phrase in one place, and get results from many search engines. You have the possibility to set up how important each different search engine should be in showing you results, and I personally think is is a great feature, that if you have experience with the major search engines. In that case you will know what you like and dislike about very one of them.

OK, so exactly can you make money out of using this? Well, it seems that you receive 1 point for every search you make. So, if you set up your home page to scour.com instead of google or yahoo or whatever other search engine you most probably have set up now, you will notice that points can be raised pretty fast.
They also have the option to invite you contacts using a contacts importer, that will fetch contacts from your email address book. You will receive 25% of all of your friend's points.

How much can you earn? OK, I'll try to explain as good as I can:

First of all I'd like to thank all of my readers for their support, I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I saw my hits counter was counting more than 4500 visits. I know that it does not sound like much, but considering that I can be called a "noob" in being a webmaster, and also that this blog is less than 3 weeks old, I think it is a pretty good result.
OK, the actual reason of this post is that I wanted to share my experience with you regarding a controversed website: AW Surveys. I came across it after googeling "get paid to complete online surveys". The website has a very simple and clean design, very well user-oriented, just as I personally like them to be. Of course that sometimes make the user think it's cheap, and therefore, might be a scam or at least that it could never produce good results. But the best example to prove that theory is wrong is, in my opinion, Google. I mean, think about it, do you know a website that has a simpler design than Google? I personally don't. On the other hand, It's actually the most effective search engine there is.....

In order to keep this post as easy to digest as possible, I will try to explain the advantages of joining them as good as I can:

- First and most important aspect, registration is FREE
- There are no membership restrictions, all countries can join
- Surveys provided by them are very short comparing to others, most of the times you are required to write a short (3-4 sentences) review about 1 or 2 websites
- Payment for 1 short survey range from $ 1 to $ 25, but most of them are $4 or $6
- The minimum payout is JUST $ 75 ( I have already received my first $ 50 yesterday and have another $ 10 in my account already)
- This not an advantage, it's actually a drawback, but I feel obliged to mention it here: when you reach $ 75 and request payment, they will transfer only $ 50 to your PayPal, and the $ 25 difference is called by them "Expedited Service Charge" This $ 25 amount is taken directly from your AW Surveys account.

I dare to say "scam" because, in case you haven't noticed, at the bottom of every "squeeze page" that promises to turn an average Joe into a rich guy in a few days, you will ALWAYS find an "EARNINGS DISCLAIMER". If you read those tiny words, you will see that they actually don't guarantee by any means that you will ever earn even 1 dollar after buying their "miraculous product"

I really am the average Joe that simply REFUSED to pay even 1 cent for any product on the market that promises to make anyone rich, but in exchange kept trying and trying to find top FREE methods to make money online. 5 Google Tools For Researching Your Market

Internet marketers and webmasters have always had a love/ hate relationship with Google. Whatever you think of them they do provide website owners with some great market research tools.

No matter what market you are in or plan to be in, you will find these free tools provided by Google very useful when researching your market. You should be researching your market constantly, NOT just when setting up your site. The internet is ever changing and, if you're not keeping up with those changes, you will be left behind.

Market Research Tool 1 - Related Searches And Wonder Wheel

When you start typing in the main Google search box you should see a drop down box appear giving you some alternative search terms related to the word you typed. Note these phrases down in a notepad file or write them on a piece of paper. They will be useful as part of your keyword list used in the next tool. You will also see more related search phrases after you click search. Scroll to the bottom of the results page and you will see "searches related to:" Note down any new phrases shown there.
Recently Google has released Wonder Wheel which is also a related keywords tool but is shown in a mind map format. You can also click on the related phrases to find more useful search terms. To access wonder wheel: enter your keyword in the standard search screen, then at the top of the results on the left you should see a show options link. Select that and it will reveal a menu. Near the bottom of the menu you should see wonder wheel.

Market Research Tool 2 - Adwords Keyword Tool

We all know how important keywords and search phrases are. Let's face it, it's what drives the internet. Google has provided us with a tool that tells you what keywords and phrases people are using to find what they are looking for. You are able to search an individual country, more than one if you hold down the ctrl key on your keyboard as you select, or all countries.

The adwords tool is now more valuable due to the fact it shows actual search numbers. Previously you only had a green bar to indicate how much traffic the search term receíved. You can also see how competitive each keyword is amongst adword advertisers, showing us which keywords are commercially viable.

Market Research Tool 3 - Google Trends

Now that you have an idea what keywords your market is using you can use the trends tool to check the history of that keyword / phrase. Google Trends supplies data for the last 5 years, giving you an idea if the search term is consistent. You can also see if the search term is popular at certain times of the year, also known as a seasonal keywords.

Another important function of Trends is the section that tells you the popularity of a keyword by country, city and language - very useful if you are targeting particular countries or even cities.

Market Research Tool 4 - Google Alerts

Alerts is underused by webmasters. If you want to stay in touch with what's hot in your market, you can by using Google Alerts. All you have to do is enter the most popular phrases in your market. Google will then send you links via email depending on what type you select.The types are news, web, blogs, video and groups. If you would like a mix of all, you can select comprehensive. You can decide how often you want to be updated by selecting either: as it happens, once a day or once a week. I hope you can see how powerful this is if you want to be seen as an authority in your market.

Market Research Tool 5 - Google Web Search

Finally, we have Google's standard web search which is not standard in my eyes. It provides a lot of information if you know what to look for. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an important part of running a website. By performing a search of your market keywords, Google will tell you what type of content it sees as important.

If you see videos, blogs or images this gives you another way to reach the top 10 of Google. If you see Web 2.0 style sites such as Digg, that could be another avenue. If there are adword ads on the right side of the screen, that tells you the market is commercially viable and more importantly that the keyword you entered is good enough to pay for, especially if there are 10 ads or more.

Advantages of text link advertising

Discrete: advertising links are placed in the sidebar, similarly to an usual blogroll, occupying a small space. Some programs offer you the possibility to include the paid links directly in your posts, but without those obtrusive embedded pop-ups.
Not limited: there is no limit of how many advertising links you put on each page. Actually your common sense is the limit.

Drawbacks of text link advertising

Not compliant with Google (the search engine): selling links implies also that you pass PR to the advertisers (as all current programs don’t allow no-follow tags on paid links), and this is not accepted by Google. If they catch you, they will penalize your site.
The in-posts variant is not compatible with paid reviews because links to third party sites are not allowed.

List of text link advertising programs

Text-Link-Ads: besides the text links selling, TLA has an affiliate program which pays $25 for each person you refer and who installs and keeps the TLA code on his blog for at least 7 days. The affiliate program does not break Google’s rules, so it is safe to use it.

TNX.net: instead of using real money, TNX uses points for trading links. Points can be exchanged for USD at a rate which may vary over time.

LinkInTxt (Linkworth): unlike TLA, which gives you a plugin for handling the links, with Linkworth you’ll have to add the links by hand. All other options they claim to have did not function in my case.

Pay-Per-Click Contextual Advertising

Contextual advertising means that ads which appear on a web page are related to its content, as determined by a spider (or robot) which scans the page and sends instructions to the advertising program about what ads to serve. This means that if your page is about fishing, you’ll get ads related to fishing, such as fishing gear, baits or hooks. If the program has a good technology of content scanning and a broad range of advertisers, then the ads appearing on a web page will be very targeted, and readers will be interested in them. When a visitor clicks an ad, you are paid a certain amount of money, which depends on the advertiser’s bid, and which can be between $0.01 for less competitive niches, and even tens of US dollars for the niches with lots of major players.

Advantages of contextual advertising

Low admission barrier: there is no traffic limit for your blog to get accepted, so even small, new blogs can use it
Easy integration: you can blend the ads with your page layout, in order to make it look like being a part of it, without having to know any programming language
High CTR: if well optimized, on niche sites, contextual advertising can have 10%-20% CTR, which is a very good rate.

Drawbacks of contextual advertising

Cheap look: many people perceive ads which serve contextual ads as being low quality, or made especially for the purpose of serving ads (maybe you’ve come across the term MFA, which means Made For AdSense)
Low performance on sticky sites: readers have to click away and leave your site, in order for you to get money.

List of contextual advertising programs

Google AdSense: the most known and widespread contextual pay-per-click advertising program. I’ve been using AdSense since 2006, and I can say that they are trustful, and they pay as promised in their terms of service. You have to make at least $100 before they’d issue a payment.

Yahoo Publisher Network: in order to be accepted, you need to have a valid US Social Security or Tax ID number, and your website must be predominantly in English and targeted at a US user base. The payment threshold is also $100

ShoppingAds: not exactly a contextual ads service, but you have the possibility to choose keywords for your ads block, so it will display only ads related to whatever you choose. All Non-US traffic will always see CPA (Cost-Per-Action) ads, regardless of your campaign configuration. The US visitors will see Cost-Per-Click (CPC) ads.
