Next Food Handling course begins on Monday and another is planned for June

The first Food Handling course held at the Nerja Cultural Centre has finished and a second is due to start on Monday. Such is the demand that a third course is being planned for June 26th.

The Food Handling Certificate is an essential for anyone working in the catering trade or in any job where food is involved and handled. The courses are being carried out by the local company APLITEX.

The certificate obtained is the so-called ‘high risk’ certificate which has no expiration date. The cost of the course is €15.

14 bids for Nerja water treatment plant project

The deadline for bids for the water treatment plant contract was June 21st and there are a total of 14 bids involving 35 companies, several opting to bid as a temporary consortium (UTE).

The next stage of proceedings is scheduled to occur on June 7th, with the opening of the submitted technical documentation. This will occur at the Ministry of Environment.

Subsequently, on September 13th, the economic documentation will be opened and scrutinised. The Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, hopes that, circumstances permitting, the bidding process can be completed and the contract awarded by the end of this year.

World Environment Day

World Environment Day is on June 5th and the bulk of activities taking place in the town centre around the schools.

Students will be visiting a recycling plant in Antequera, planting a tree, visiting the Aquatic Museum in Málaga, collecting rubbish on Burriana and Torrecilla beaches and visiting the upper galleries in the Nerja Caves.

There will also be a Gymkhana taking place in three locations with various prizes being awarded including tickets for the Nerja Museum.

Students will also be attending a conference given by FACUA entitled ‘Consumption and water supply: an intelligent management of our resources’.

The AEN, the Association of Employers in Nerja, has written to the Council to request an adjustment to the water rates as the increase is seriously damaging to hotels in the town.

The AEN claims that the current rate is €1.31 per cubic metre whereas it was previously €0.52, an increase of over 150%.

Aguas de Narixa, who manage the water supply, apparently deny that the tariff has been increased.

Water to be cut off in Burriana beach area on Tuesday

Free admission to the Nerja Caves for residents and Spring Concerts

Residents of Nerja can now visit the Nerja Caves free of charge on Sunday mornings throughout the year. Proof of residency is required. In addition, the Nerja Museum is free admission for EU residents every Sunday between 16:00 and 18:30.

The Nerja Caves Foundation has also organised a Spring Concert programme and these will take place in the Sala de la Cascada.

Sunday May 27th, June 3rd and June 10th 2012 at 11:00 and 13:00, the Nerja Chamber Orchestra will be performing pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Giovanni Benedetto Platti and Antonio Vivaldi.

Sunday June 17th 2012: The Nerja Chamber Orchestra, with the addition of a horn section, will be performing new pieces.

Beach volleyball championships on Burriana beach

The Provincial Junior Volleyball Championship took place on Burriana beach at the weekend with 35 pairs taking part, 27 female and 8 male.

In the male category, Martín-Monterroso (Pizarra) and Trinidad-Manzano (Costa del Voley) qualified for the regional championship. In the female category, Armijo-Cereto (Nerja) and Díaz-Martín (Costa del Voley) regional qualifiers.

The Andalucia Championship matches will take place in Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz, on June 2nd and 3rd.

Cueva de Nerja basketball team triumphs

The Cueva de Nerja senior basketball team were proclaimed provincial champions at the weekend after winning the Final Four tournament, beating Deportivo Coín Cerámica Mateo 62-61. Both teams will play in the First Division next season.

III Crafts Market

The third Crafts Market, now a regular monthly feature, took place in Plaza de España on Saturday between 10:00 and 20:00.

The products are all hand made and, unlike with so many markets, there are no food or drink products being displayed or on offer.

There are some very good items on offer, although it remains to be seen as to whether the market is sustainable on a monthly basis throughout the year or whether it will become more of a regular summer and intermittent winter event.

The photos were taken between 16:00 and 16:30 on Saturday and the number of visitors to the market during that time was minimal.
