Two fires in Andalucia

Two forest fires which began yesterday in Almeria and Huelva have been brought under control and extinguished.

A fire in Sierra de Almagro, Almeria, at one time threatening communication towers in the Monte el Cucharón area, was extinguished overnight. Around 70 firemen and 8 aircraft were involved in tackling the blaze.

A second fire in Nerva, Huelva province, started in the old La Grana mine and the prime concern was its proximity to a landfill site containing toxic and dangerous materials. Firemen with air support worked throughout the afternoon to control the blaze and officials from the landfill company collaborated with INFOCA to build up and maintain perimeter firewalls at the site.

In both fires, areas of scrub and pine were destroyed.

29 immigrants intercepted off the Málaga coast

A seven metre dinghy carrying 29 North Africans was intercepted on Thursday evening off the Málaga coast.

The small craft was spotted at 18:00 about 20 miles off the coast of Málaga and the rapid intervention vessel ‘Salvamar Vega’, based in Estepona, was sent to intercept.

The occupants of the dinghy, all North African males in apparent good health, were taken to the port of Estepona.

Next Food Handling course begins on Monday and another is planned for June

The first Food Handling course held at the Nerja Cultural Centre has finished and a second is due to start on Monday. Such is the demand that a third course is being planned for June 26th.

The Food Handling Certificate is an essential for anyone working in the catering trade or in any job where food is involved and handled. The courses are being carried out by the local company APLITEX.

The certificate obtained is the so-called ‘high risk’ certificate which has no expiration date. The cost of the course is €15.

14 bids for Nerja water treatment plant project

The deadline for bids for the water treatment plant contract was June 21st and there are a total of 14 bids involving 35 companies, several opting to bid as a temporary consortium (UTE).

The next stage of proceedings is scheduled to occur on June 7th, with the opening of the submitted technical documentation. This will occur at the Ministry of Environment.

Subsequently, on September 13th, the economic documentation will be opened and scrutinised. The Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, hopes that, circumstances permitting, the bidding process can be completed and the contract awarded by the end of this year.

III Feria Vinojén

Over 40 wineries will be represented at the III Feria Vinojén which takes place on Saturday June 2nd, with around 180 wines available for tasting. The event is biannual and last time, in 2010, attracted more than 3,000 visitors.

Antequera Feria

The Feria de la Primavera y Agrogant in Antequera this year takes place from June 1st to 3rd and includes agricultural food products, agricultural and farm machinery (Expomaq). Highlights include a horse show, bullfighting classes and concerts by Danza Invisible and Raya Real.

New Walking Guide to the Sierras Tejeda y Almijara

A new book, ‘Sierras Tejeda y Almijara. Guía del excursionista’ – ‘Sierras Tejeda y Almijara. Hiker’s Guide – is being presented tomorrow in Vélez-Málaga. The work of Rafael Flores, president of the Asociación Senderista Pasos Largos, details 41 walking routes throughout the Natural Park.

Social Programme to create up to 35 jobs

Torrox Council has approved the Social Programme for the Balancing of Family Income which will create up to 35 part-time jobs per year with a maximum contract period of six months. According to the Council, the programme is designed to partially or wholly solve urgent needs arising from social emergencies experienced by residents as a result of the crisis.

Self-defence course for women

Vélez-Málaga Council, with the help of European funds, has set up a free course in self-defence and self-esteem for women in the La Villa, Arroyo de San Sebastián and La Molineta districts. The course will take place from June 11th to 15th from 17:00 to 20:30 in calle San Francisco.

World Environment Day

World Environment Day is on June 5th and the bulk of activities taking place in the town centre around the schools.

Students will be visiting a recycling plant in Antequera, planting a tree, visiting the Aquatic Museum in Málaga, collecting rubbish on Burriana and Torrecilla beaches and visiting the upper galleries in the Nerja Caves.

There will also be a Gymkhana taking place in three locations with various prizes being awarded including tickets for the Nerja Museum.

Students will also be attending a conference given by FACUA entitled ‘Consumption and water supply: an intelligent management of our resources’.
