The most pressing tax issue raised by a zombie apocalypse is the application of the so-called “death tax,” which imposes a tax on the transfer of the estate of a “decedent.” Zombies have been described variously as the “walking dead,” the “undead,” and the “living dead,” raising the question whether the estate tax should apply when a taxpayer becomes a zombie or, in the alternative, after a person’s zombie has been dispatched.

The definition of death, and therefore of a decedent, has generally been left to the states, each of which has its own definition. That said, there has been a recent trend away from a definition that focuses on heart function to one that focuses on brain function. Whether people who become zombies would be considered dead for state law purposes depends both on the definition used and the type of zombie involved.

It seems a stretch to conclude that those who transform seamlessly into zombies should be considered dead. They never lose heart or brain function, though they now function quite differently from before. While it might be tempting to declare them dead, significant line-drawing problems would arise as one tried to distinguish between zombies and those who have suffered some mental or physical breakdown. Declaring such zombies dead would open the door to declaring dead a wide range of people currently considered to be alive.

Vor ein paar Monaten hatte ich Brian Joseph Davis fantastisches Projekt The Composites gebloggt, in dem er Kriminelle aus der Literatur per Textzitat durch eine Phantomzeichnungs-Software der Polizei jagt. Jetzt hat er sich Norman Bates aus Psycho vorgenommen und ich liebe es, dass Mamas Liebling so überhaupt nicht wie Anthony Perkins aussieht. Außerdem hat er eine Kriminalstatistik seiner bislang durch die Software illustrierten Literaturfiguren aufgestellt. Ich liebe dieses Tumblelog.

Tom Sachs, dessen Arbeiten ich hier schon öfter gebloggt hatte, zeigt derzeit in der Armory in New York eine Mars Missions-Installation. Designboom hat ein paar schicke Bilder davon und ich liebe Leatherface on Mars:

SPACE PROGRAM: MARS is a demonstration of all that is necessary for survival, scientific exploration, and colonization in extraterrestrial environs: from food delivery systems and entertainment to agriculture and human waste disposal. Sachs and his studio team of thirteen will man the installation, regularly demonstrating the myriad procedures, rituals, and tasks of their mission. The team will also “lift off” to Mars several times throughout their residency at the Armory, with real-time demonstrations playing out various narratives from take-off to landing, including planetary excursions, their first walk on the surface of Mars, collecting scientific samples, and photographing the surrounding landscape.

The Other Cinema hat kurz nach dem 1. Mai und vor den Londoner Bürgermeister-Wahlen ein Screening von Mathieu Karrovitz “La Haine” (Hass) veranstaltet, parallel in London und Paris, rund ein Jahr nach den London Riots. Das riecht einerseits ein bisschen nach Monetarisierung von Rebellions-Chique (auch wenn die Screenings von Other Cinema gratis sind), aber andererseits denke ich, dass das Statement mit diesem Film in diesen Locations zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht eindeutiger ausfallen können. Kudos.

On the eve of the London mayoral election, The Other Cinema, from the creators of Secret Cinema, launched with an inspired free community screening of LA HAINE at the Broadwater Farm Community Centre in Tottenham, London.

As part of The Other Cinema network and tour, the production will travel from Broadwater Farm to The Troxy in Limehouse on 4th May, launch in outskirts of Paris, Saint-Ouen (free community screening) and conclude at Le Trianon in central Paris on 5th May where this production will close, the eve of the second round of the French presidential elections. Screenings are confirmed in 12 cities and towns in England and France from 2nd to 5th May, including Tallinn, Estonia.

Mathieu Kassovitz, Director of La Haine, said: “I’m proud and honored that LA HAINE after all these years is still a symbol of rebellion for old and new generations. The film’s impact is way beyond everything any director would hope for and the strength of Asian Dub Foundation’s music makes the film an interactive experience shared by audiences around the world. The choice of Tottenham for the first screening is a symbolic one; youth are still at lost in this globalized political world and don’t have any other voice to be heard than violence. Burning and looting is more than thieves stealing toasters. It’s the voice of the people that are at the lowest step of the ladder. It should be listened to with respect and intelligence and not simple accusations of ‘hoodlism’. I hope these screenings will help remember what we fight for. No justice. No peace.”

Wir fahren mit unseren Minis ans Kap der Guten Hoffnung, auf dem Weg schauen wir uns eine Pinguin-Kolonie an und man soll auch ziemlich oft Affen sehen. Heute sind sie scheu, dabei hatte ich mich bereits auf ein bisschen Baboon-Action gefreut, während die Viecher auf unseren Autos rumspringen und ein paar Sachen kaputtmachen. Schade.

Bei den Pinguinen fand ich mich auf einmal von einem Haufen Touristen umzingelt und ich befreite mich, indem ich die Kamera auf sie richtete und mir den Weg mit Fotos freischoss. Den Shot mit den schlechtgelaunten Indern im Vordergrund, während Nico, Craig und Angela in die Kamera grinsen, finde ich super. Vor allem den Gesichtsausdruck des Sohns rechts. Sein Foto steht im Lexikon während dem Eintrag zu “Blargh”. Man findet hier am Meer auch immer seltsame Tentakel zwischen den Felsen, von denen unser Guide Craig behauptet, es wäre Seetang. Ich wette allerdings noch immer alles darauf, dass es sich um gestrandete, gigantische Alien-Oktopusse handelt.

Am Kap selbst, dem südlichsten Zipfel von Afrika und von mir deshalb “Arsch der Welt” getauft, ist es vor allem felsig und stürmisch und auf diesem vertikalen Panorama sieht man links den Indischen Ozean und rechts den Pazifik. Außerdem kann ich mir jetzt in den Lebenslauf schreiben, mal Unsinn am Arsch der Welt gemacht zu haben. Finde ich toll. Noch toller fand ich das Steak, das wir abends im Tintswalo Restaurant aßen. Das Teil hat ‘ne offene Küche, ne völlig abartige Aussicht (wenn es nicht grade regnet) und das Steak mit Senfkruste kannste am Gaumen mit der Zunge zerdrücken. Mein bestes Steak, ever. No Contest.

Phil Tippett ist ‘ne FX-Legende, hat den ED209 entworfen und animiert und er brachte den AT-ATs in Empire das Laufen bei. Großer Mann. Und der erfüllt sich jetzt einen lange gehegten Traum und setzt sein Projekt “Mad Gods” um, einen Stop Motion-Animationsfilm, der damals alle FX-Techniken vereinen sollte und den er mit Aufkommen von CGI unvollendet in den Schrank gestellt hatte. Der Film ist bereits über Kickstarter finanziert und soll im Dezember fertig sein und wird dann wohl in der ein oder anderen Form im Netz veröffentlicht.

With his work on the “Star Wars” movies, Tippett carved his own niche as a modern master of stop motion. In 1984 he created his own studio where he continued to explore and innovate using stop motion.

MAD GOD began with several minutes of stop motion animation in 1990, before the explosion of Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) for movies. But as his studio blossomed into a powerhouse of computer-assisted visual effects and animation, the MAD GOD project fell on the back burner. After sitting on the shelf for 20 years, artists at Tippett Studio implored Phil to revive MAD GOD.

Incorporating footage shot before the surge of CGI with new puppets, scenes, environments, and in-camera effects, Phil is directing while mentoring an entire new generation in traditional stop motion animation and creature fabrication.

Jeff Ledger hat aus einem Kickstarter-Projekt, in dem einer einen Bananen-Controler für Videogames gebastelt hat, einen Bananensynthie gebastelt. Dazu braucht man ein bisschen Technikschnickschnack und “Nine Bananas (8 notes & 1 to snack on)”.

Joaquin Baldwin hat das Skelett der Skull-Motte aus dem Silence of the Lambs-Poster als 3D-Model ausgegeben: “I created the skeleton of a skeletal Lepidoptera. The Death’s Head Hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos), seen on The Silence of the Lambs , has a skull marking on its back. I made a full human-like bone structure for the moth, with the grinning skull protruding from its back.”

At present, Fanfiction.net boasts 1,397 individual pieces of Hannibal Lecter-inspired fanfiction, placing it just outside the top thirty most-written-about movies on the site. Some stories follow secondary characters, such as Rinaldo Pazzi, the corrupt policeman in Hannibal, or Clarice’s colleagues, Jack Crawford and Ardelia Mapp. Some pieces, like duffie83’s “Iron Chef America: Flay vs Lecter ” (alternate title: “Flay FilletedI”) take a more tongue-in-cheek approach, but are typically met with a chilly reception. Some pieces take the form of verse, as in MajorBachman’s ” Clarice’s Poem,” [...]

The overwhelming majority of Lambs/Hannibal stories are in this vein. And the Hannibal/Clarice pairing is the clear favorite among authors on the site, with stories rated “M”—i.e. for a mature audience, usually because of graphic sexual content—accounting for just shy of a quarter of the category’s offerings.

Eigentlich bin ich mit Star Wars ja durch, aber eben nicht so durch, dass ich diesen Setzkasten, den Etsy-User FaustX2 mit Star Wars-Actionfiguren gefüllt und sich damit ‘nen Wohnzimmertisch gebaut hat, nicht völlig fantastisch finden würde. Bin ja nicht bescheuert. WANT!

This mixed media custom coffee table was made from reworked vintage printing press trays and a pair of vintage steel dock pallets. The interior display area is populated with a broad survey of Storm Troopers, Clone Troopers and other Imperial officers and droids from the various eras of Star Wars mythology. The pallets have been left rusted and all woodwork has been kept rough in keeping with the industrial style of the piece and are bound together with black steel wire.

Das da oben ist Bradley Prosper Chikambura. Bradley lebt seit fünf Jahren in Kapstadt, nachdem er vor fünf Jahren aus Mugabes Simbabwe nach Südafrika floh. In Simbabwe hatte der Mann mal IT studiert, heute schlägt er sich als Tagelöhner auf der Straße durch, indem er sich morgens an den Straßenrand setzt und darauf hofft, dass er von einem der vorbeifahrenden Transporter aufgegabelt wird und einen mal mehr, mal weniger harten Job machen kann. Wenn er Arbeit findet, verdient er für Straßenbau- oder Aufräumarbeiten rund 100 Südafrikanische Rand am Tag, das sind 10 Euro.

Manchmal verdient sich Bradley ein paar Rand dazu, indem er Feishbook-Shirts verkauft, die sein Kumpel Oscar druckt, der sich ebenfalls meistens als Tagelöhner durchschlägt. Heute hat er keine dabei, leider. Das hier ist Oscar mit Feishbook-Shirt:

Das hier ist Bradleys Facebook-Seite, ‘ne Website für die Feishbook-Shirts ich nicht gefunden, aber ich wette, Bradley freut sich über ein paar neue “Friends” und ich habe beiden versprochen, sollten sie’s mal nach Berlin schaffen, zwei oder drei oder zehn Biere mit ihnen zu trinken.

Wir haben die beiden auf den Seitenstraßen von Cape Town getroffen, nachdem wir die Stadt bereits auf einer “Sex and Slave City Tour” kennenlernten, eine Tour, die im Netz als Musical über Prostitution während der Kolonialzeit angepriesen wurde und die sich nichtmal als ein Zehntel so grausam und rassistisch erwiesen hatte, wie ich zunächst annahm. War tatsächlich ganz in Ordnung, der Musical-Teil beschränkte sich auf mehr oder weniger exaltierte und improvisierte Theateraufführungen durch unseren Guide und wir erfuhren viel über die immer noch sichtbare Geschichte der Sklavenhaltung in Cape Town, als weiße Freier ihre schwarzen Stamm-Huren aus dem Sklavenstatus “befreiten”.

Auf dem Weg ins Hotel sah ich einen offensichtlich wohlhabenden weißen Mann, der ins Handy quatschend am Wegesrand entlangschritt, während seine aufgetakelte schwarze Konkubine oder Frau oder Gespielin daneben entlangwackelte. Parkwächter bildeten eine lange Schlange um ihre Einkünfte beim indischen Geschäftsinhaber anzuliefern (es gab zur Kolonialzeit eine Hierarchie unter den Rassen: Die Weißen, die Inder, der Rest und die Schwarzen) und abends haben wir ein fantastisches 5-Gänge-Essen im Aubergine, einem der zehn besten Restaurants des Landes, ein paar Stunden zuvor fotografierte ich zwei Junkies, einer rauchte grade Heroin. Geschichte ist sehr lebendig in Cape Town.

Christian von der Wiener Galerie 4e7-Artforum schreibt mir: “Hi René, wir zeigen grad Fotos vom Life Ball in der aktuellen Ausstellung.”

Der Fotograf Markus Morianz, 1965 in Hall in Tirol geboren, begleitet seit mehr als sieben Jahren den Life Ball mit der Kamera und fängt die Stimmung dieses einzigartigen Events ein. Im Zuge dessen hat er sich intensiv mit der Thematik des Balls auseinandergesetzt, unter anderem auch als Fotograf der Stylebible.

In der Ausstellung „Drugs saved my life“ vermittelt der Künstler das ambivalente Verhältnis zwischen dem Life Ball, auf dem exzessiv gefeiert wird und dem zentralen Anliegen des Balls, Geld für nationale und internationale AIDS-Hilfsprojekte zu sammeln.

Durch eine sehr ehrliche Bildsprache konfrontiert der Künstler die BetrachterInnen mit dem noch immer stigmatisierten Thema HIV. Dennoch ermöglicht die glitzernde Hülle des Life Balls Bewusstsein für den Umgang mit und die Prävention von HIV-Infektionen auf zugängliche Art und Weise zu schaffen.

Umso beeindruckender sind die unerwarteten Parallelen zwischen den schillernden Partybildern und den Fotografien, die in einem Waisenhaus für HIV-Infizierte Kinder in Kambodscha aufgenommen wurden, wo der Ausstellungstitel durch den Life Ball Programm wurde und ist.

Die Schau zeigt wie naheliegend es ist, das Leben zu feiern.

We are seeking curious, playful and adventurous artists and indie game developers from the sub Saharan region and South Africa to participate in A MAZE. Interact 2012 in Johannesburg, South Africa. A MAZE. Interact is a games and media art festival, which will take place from 28th of August to the 2nd of September in several locations in Braamfontein, Downtown Johannesburg.

Last call: 15th of June 2012.

Since 2008 A MAZE. is celebrating the convergence of games, art and society. The goal of the A MAZE. Interact Festival in Johannesburg in South Africa in 2012 is to create an annual platform for African and European media artists and game developers. Creatives are encouraged to break down the conventional computer game and surpass established digital or analog concepts of play. A MAZE. Interact targets the collaboration between artists and the exchange on an artistic, academic and cultural level.

Eine Fleischerei, die in Chicago japanisches Premium Rindfleisch verkauft, Designer von ODL, Luftballons, Latex, Farbe, Meat Ballons. Lecker.

Balloon Factory (a project by Object Design League) was invited by Sight Unseen to design a window installation for Japan Premium Beef as part of the NoHo Design District, a recurring gathering of off-site design events during the annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York each year.

The Balloon Factory project started as a performance, but it has persisted as a factory. We produce balloons for special events and by request. For Japan Premium Beef, we made a set of butcher-themed balloons (in the tradition of Sam Baron’s sausage installation there in 2010). A selection of uninflated steak balloons were displayed on butcher trays, framed by an installation of hanging sausage balloon links. This iteration extends the original Balloon Factory project and carries a strong reference to the intricate fake food prevalent in restaurant windows in Japan.

STAPLES Center was extremely busy in downtown Los Angeles during the May 14th weekend recently. The arena played host to 6 playoff games in 4 days and thanks to the folks at AEG we have a great time lapse video showing the multiple transformations in those four days. It still baffles me how seamless the transition is, but this is not something I assume the Staples Center ‘grounds crew’ would want to happen too often.

Aus der Kategorie Klischees, die von Zeitungen verbreitet werden heute: Cyberpunks. Erschienen irgendwann in den 90ern beim Cyberpunk-Magazine Mondo 2000. Offenbar wurde das Magazine in der damaligen Szene sogar irgendwie anerkannt, weshalb mich diese doch irgendwie lächerliche Aufmachung etwas wundert, aber ich habe ja auch keine Ahnung.

Ich hatte gestern Abend diese beiden chipgetunten Radiohead Alben gefunden und hätte sie gerne hier gebracht, als ich aber auf “Artikel erstellen” klickte passierte so lange nichts, bis ich die Dinger bei mir schon draußen hatte. Sei es drum, jetzt geht hier wieder was, deshalb eben jetzt hier noch mal. Weil: Radiohead, Chiptune, Nerdcore – ihr wisst schon.

Für mich im Original riesige Alben und beide in meinen zehn All Time Favourites. Youtuber QuintonSung hat sich beide genommen und komplett in 8-Bit Sound-Ästhetik umgewandelt. Außerdem gibt es die Teile zum Download (Links dazu in den Youtube-Direktlinks). Keine Ahnung, ob die wer haben muss, aber wer beide Alben hier am Stück durchzuhören schafft ohne danach gegen Wände zu laufen, kann sich beim nächsten Potsdam-Besuch eine Flasche Wodka bei mir abholen.

Email, text messages, instant messaging and Twitter are all examples of fun and immediate means of “written” communication. Through the computer I am in touch with people I may never have seen before and I can respond in real time to a loved one. But with the ubiquity of this access and convenience, we are losing the tangible handwritten letter. Handwritten records are fragments of individual histories. In the penmanship, word choice, and spelling the author is often revealed in spite of him/herself. A letter is physical confirmation of who we were at the moment it was written, or all we have left of a person or a time.
I have been working with cut out correspondence for the past four years. I meticulously recreate notes and letters that I have found, written, or received by enlarging the documents onto a new piece of paper and intricately dissecting the negative spaces with an Exact-o knife. The handwriting and the lines support the structure of the cut paper, keeping it strong and sculptural, despite its apparent fragility. In these paper cutouts, I focus on the text, structure, and emotion of the letter in an elaborate investigation into the properties of writing and expression. Penmanship, word choice, and spelling all contribute to possible narratives about who that person is and what they are like. My recreating the letters is an extended concentration on peoples’ inner lives and the ways they express their thoughts through writing.
