well,it's hard work being a doctor-you have to go to the hospital even on bharath bundh! i decided to use the public transport today as our bmtc buses were supposed to ply despite the bundh;i also thought it would be safer to travel in a bus than a two wheeler today. i had so much confidence that i even bought a daily pass when i got a bus in the morning-call it over confidence.....
it was actually very pleasing to see our bangalore roads so empty and the weather was pretty cool too today; i reached the hospital 10 minutes late as i had not got a bus quickly enough....
in the hospital itself,i think there was 50% attendance!
a cool morning started turning into an irritating afternoon-i had noticed that only one bus had gone through the road in front of our hospital since morning.... when it was time to leave, i saw that the auto drivers were having a field day.... i trudged back to the great k.r.market bus stand to find one police van parked there and nothing else!
i finally had to fall prey to one of the auto drivers and had to shell out 150 bucks to reach home. i had to bear his slow driving while he was looking for more potential customers-asking "ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕೆ ಸಾರ್?" to everyone he saw on the road! to top it all,the auto driver was pissed that he had to come such a long way and i was paying him only double the meter charge!

talk about bharath bundh and the losses incurred by the various sectors today,but the auto-wallahs sure made some quick buck today....

well,well, the germans gave done it again-score 4 goals in an important world cup match,its the third time this world cup. what an entertaining second half it was! to score 4 against argentina..... wow.... the counter attacks against england were impressive, but today, the passes were incisive and the deft touches decisive! looks like they`ll go all the way and even lift the cup this time. i was a staunch supporter of england before the cup began but i am rooting for the germans now,they have made me a convert!

this is the first real sunday-holiday i`ve had since i started at moh. had the full day off today,got up later than i had in maybe 5 years.... it`s been quite a boring day overall till now,i just dont know what to do. i was longing for a holiday and when i finally got one,i dont know what to do....

maybe i`ll watch a movie later in the day;for now, its time for lunch-i know its a little late,but i did start the day very late....

it was with mixed feelings that i had ended my last real post and i start this one with the same mixed feelings. i am happy for having been lucky enough to get a pg seat in my first attempt in bmcri-m.s.ophthalmology!
yet,it was not the first subject in my order of preference.....
i still miss my ug days at bmcri.... with great power comes great responsibility,haha.... i have quite a responsible job now,cant get away,now, with mistakes that might have been forgiven in internship.
being in school was better than being in college was better than being in mbbs was better than being an intern was better than being a pg.....
change is the order of nature and life has to move on,so be it....
onto greater (ad)ventures then!

tomorrow is officially our last day of internship, but because of a 4 day strike we went on, in the beginning of internship last year, we have got to do a 4 day extension:( socials coming up on 9th, graduation day on 13 th(as of now).

am already feeling so bad about internship coming to an end,about college life in general coming to an end.... can`t imagine how it`ll be without your closest friends around you;am surely going to miss everything about bmc. am feeling pretty depressed even as i type this.... but life has to go on, we have to move on to greater (?ad)ventures in life,isn`t it?

Ya I know it has been a long long time, but I couldn`t really help it. Am in the last days of my internship, 5 more days left to be precise. Right now, I am in pediatrics posting,juniors have arrived and am hoping I am done with all night duties-having done one just 2 days back. This is the most relaxed I have felt in a long time, also the most bored! Just dunno what to do-spent time today playing mafia wars on facebook! Nice job for a doc eh?

Looking forward to our graduation day, hopefully a class trip(have never gone on one till now) as well. More updates later.

my community medicine postings got over on friday,i began and ended it with postings in k.g.halli.,with isolation hospital and siddiaiah road referral hospital in between,not to mention the 4 day strike as well!
i am actually sad that community med postings got over,it is the best and easiest part of our postings and what a pity it was first for me. this is the first time that i am actually sad at something getting over in comm med! will miss k.g.halli for sure!

started medicine postings from saturday and i have been posted to the psychiatry department for the first fifteen days. have already seen some interesting and weird cases, including 2 schizophrenia cases and a social phobia case who was so overcome that he had attempted suicide 3 times. i was initially interested in psychiatry as a career,but seeing cases here, i am starting to worry about them more than they worry about themselves and more than i should be worrying about them. so psychiatry is not an option for me now.....

ya i know its been a long time since i posted,been a bit busy and feeling really lazy!

i was busy when i was posted in isolation hospital-what with 18 hours continuous duty when i had night duties.....but it was a very informative experience. never in my life had i seen a rabies patient,managed to see one here,poor people they are,nothing much can be done to save them!

also,3 tetanus cases were there in the wards when was finishing my posting there,1 patient had expired just the previous day....had never seen these patients too.

so people reading this post,be warned-prevention is better than cure. get anti rabies vaccination when bitten by a dog and tetanus toxoid injection when you have a penetrating wound. also wash the sites with liberal amounts of soap and water.

right now,i have been posted in siddiah road referral hospital-urban and family welfare centre. not much work here actually, its only on mondays and fridays-when there is ante-natal care clinic that we will be really busy. just can`t believe the number of pregnant women who keep pouring in for check-ups....

we ocassionally have to visit some anganwadis for outreach immunization on tuesdays and wednesdays,sometimes on saturdays,but on the whole we dont have much work here. immunization day is on thursday and i managed to give a bcg vaccine to a newborn. was my first time and it is quite tough to give an intradermal injection!

below is an image of an intradermal injection being given,thats actually a tuberculin test being done,bcg vaccines are given with the same syringe higher up,in the arm. thats the bleb that forms if u have given it right!

first week as doctor in k.g.halli!

the d-day had finally arrived on monday,9th of march,2009. it was going to be my first day as intern!
having gotten up earlier than i had in more than a month,i trudged off,full of enthusiasm and a little anxiety, to college to the community medicine department to collect the posting order and arrived at the place well before 9am. but not a single soul was to be seen,other than 2 0r 3 other first day interns like me....
it was well after 10.00 am when someone concerned with our posting order arrived, but it was almost 3.30 pm by the time we got the orders and my first posting was in k.g.halli, a.k.a kadugondanna halli.... not really rural,the place itself is in bangalore but the facilities are pretty rural!
in the meantime, i did open an account in the nearby sbi bank where our stipends are sent and we also found time for a long overdue birthday and results treat of a close friend!the food and pricing were both awesome at roti ghar in basavangudi....
the next day was a holiday,but we still had to go to the k.g.halli phc-primary health centre,as it was our first day as doctaars!4 of us including me,were posted there.
with no one to report to,we had to see to patients as and when they came and a senior,an outgoing intern was there to help us.
i was pretty disappointed with the way things were though, no ointment or antiseptics to dress wounds,anti rabies vaccine not being available(dog bites are common here you know) and sometimes even tt injections(so called septic injections) are not available too....
but we are doing our best by providing the patients with the medicines available here free of cost and giving them what advice we can.
thursday was immunisation day and yesterday was ante natal check up day(all pregnant ladies are confirmed of their pregnancy,relevant tests done,appropriate advice and medicines given to them). today being a govt. holiday, only one person has to stay at the phc from 10-12 and i am at home now....my turn of staying alone at the phc had come on thursday(between 1 and 4 pm,only one of us is needed at the phc....)
things will get better by the look of it,a new building that will perhaps function like an urban health centre,is coming up and hopefully it will have all the basic facilities!

finally,the final year is over! the exams got over,the results have come out and well, i got a first class!!!!!!! am feeling really,really relieved and happy now:) last time i felt like this was way back in 2002 and in 2004,when my x std. and 2nd puc results had come out!

i finally can add those coveted 2 letters before my name now!

thats why i have not been blogging, or doing much else for that matter, these few days.
i think this is the sickest i have been since i had got pneumonia in 2005. atleast i had a diagnosis then.....
it all began last thursday morning with a sore throat...which conveniently disappeared by evening,by when i had developed fever.... i did go to college the next day, but by the time i came back, i had chills to accompany the fever.... had to go to a doctor, who diagnosed it as viral lower respiratory tract infection and was given fever lowering drugs and antibiotics for prophylaxis.
but the fever did not subside. after being bedridden and missing college for 3 days, i called up the doc. i was advised blood tests-all of which were normal-no signs of parasites,bacterial infections..... hmmm, the doctor thought it should still be a viral fever, the fever might be taking some time to come down. i thought and hoped soo too.
the course of antibiotics were completed yesterday and am feeling a little better. keeping my fingers crossed for now.....

by the way, my medicine postings are going on(did i catch the infection there then?), we get to see a lot of interesting cases here. they are all unique, each patient a puzzle, a challenge. the satisfaction you get when you successfully treat these people is unmatched!

also our college fest cobalt skies began today-i could not go, am at home, relaxing from the aftermath of the illness...

well, it was quite a special day yesterday(4th october), first being, it was my birthday. we were also finshing our paediatrics postings, so it was internals time(yet again)! the internals went alright, i had to take a case of acute diarrhea!

we did not have any classes at 12.30, so whiled away my time till 2. after the medicine-neurology class at 2, it was time for some partying!!!!

i had to give a treat to my friends and another close friend had to as well, for getting his ICMR project approved and getting a handsome stipend! we went to an ice-cream snacks.... joint and had some fun!!!!

Jules Verne Week!

my recreational activities this week were related to jules verne.....
i finished the e-book twenty thousand leagues under the sea on thursday. if i compare it with the other works of verne that i have read-journey to the centre of the earth, around the world in 80 days, this book was too lengthy, too many descriptions of the flora and fauna of the seas! it really gets boring at too many places..... but the story overall, the concept of a submarine, visiting the south pole, discovering the submerged atlantis, make for a worthwhile read. especially when you consider that all this was written way back in the 1800s.... the highlight of the book is the part where they get trapped while returning from the south pole and how Captain Nemo,`the emotionless` and the crew and passengers aboard the Nautilius handle the situation. fantastic read overall!

the other activity realted to verne is :i watched the movie journey to the center of the earth on wednesday. i had read the book some 2 years ago, well, i had not been able to get the book in stores, found the book in a book exhibition then. anyway, i had absolutely loved the book then and was looking forward to watching this movie ever since i first saw the trailer. much to my dismay, the movie was released here more than a month later than its worldwide release date. it did get released and i found the movie quite entertaining! like i have said many times before, suspension of disbelief is quite essential if you want to enjoy fantasy based movies like this.

thank you jules verne for the entertaining works you have produced and the people involved in making the movie a success!

Cute little sparrows!

seems like the cute little sparrows are making a comeback! the last i had seen them was when i was around 10 years old, near my granny`s house. i used to love these birds, they were tiny,cute,playful, some of them even used to taunt the dog that was there in my granny`s house. what fun it was to watch them. all of a sudden, i couldn`t spot a single member of this species, it was like extinction happening right in front of my eyes!

12 years later, i spotted a few sparrows in the most unlikeliest locations!

last week, i saw quite a number of them in the K.R Market bus stand! also, some were seen hovering near the entrance of Victoria Hospital!

are they making a comeback? hope so! welcome back you cute little passerines!

before i could say internals, another internal got over-surgery theory, on friday. it went okay, better than the last one i hope!

and our paediatrics postings have begun, nice to see the little kids, really cute they are. but it`s sad to see them sick, in hospital wards.... too bad.

and about a software-mobi reader. it was recommended to me by my friend-brocas.....

i managed to find an alpha version for my s40 phone and it works like a charm. although i had hoped that i would not be reading anymore novels, i am halfway through twenty thousand leagues under the sea, thanks to this wonderful software. you can find this and more such legal e-books on Project Gutenberg.

last week, we were told we would have no internals at the end of postings in obg and instead we would be evaluated topic wise, we would be given a topic to prepare for, the previous day, and questions would be asked on the same and marks given according to the overall performance in several topics. this happened on last saturday and this monday. the rest of the days, our profs, asst. profs, lecturers were all busy and today this happened:
"oh, you have internals today right?", asked the person who had told us we would not be having internals, at 10:30 in the morning. i was thinking- NOOOOOOOOOOOOO, we dont. but nothing came out of my mouth, not from the others` either....
we did present 2 cases. my internals were okay, except for 2 silly mistakes, one because of a slip of tongue.....
i have been in an irritable mood ever since. nothing much to write about, except more internals- we have surgey theory on friday. and paediatrics postings begin from monday, hello kids!

The last week of OBG postings in our final year is going on, it feels really short compared to the previous posting of 6 weeks. also, we had 1 week labour ward postings this time. we are mostly revising the cases we had seen and learnt last posting....

then.... i read a novel-deception point by dan brown. was fantastic, it`s his third novel i am reading-the others were angels and demons and da vinci code. all of them have been exhilarating. this is the only novel i have read this year, hope its the only one too, i have got to be studying right, final year,final term and all!

We did not have theory classes today. So after lunch, 6 of us decided to go to ram gopal verma's phoonk.
The first half of the movie feels as if it is trying to scare you,only, nothing else. It does succeed at many instances, mainly due to sudden appearances of people coupled with sudden booming sounds.
The second half picks up pace and the movie moves forward well. People who have never even heard of black magic may find the whole movie absurd, like a friend of mine did.
I believe that, to enjoy such movies, 'suspension of disbelief' is required atleast for the duration of the movie. Some may not require any suspension as they are already believers.
Our kichcha sudeep is acting in a bollywood movie for the first time and he does not disappoint. The cute little girl who plays his daughter has played her part well too. The climax is the best part of the movie. Although i did not find the movie as scary as it was touted to be, i did like it. A simple story told well and in a short time as well. With only a single song, the movie runs less than 2 hours.
Worth atleast one watch in the theatres! To enjoy the very good close up shots coupled with good sound effects, you have to watch the movie in a theatre. Watching it on tv or a pc just wont produce the desired effect.

It's been a typical weekend, a proper weekend like it is supposed to be. It had been quite a while.
Slept quite late yesterday, got up late today... Watched the movie 10000 bc, was quite a good movie. Then i have been watching the india sl cricket match since then. Indians are not playing that well, they have lost 4 wickets. Lets see what happens.
The olympics is also coming to an end today, usain bolt was amazing, i saw him run the 200m on tv, amazing. Phelps was stunning, 8 gold medals, wow...
There goes another wicket, 5 down now, just when it seemed India was recovering...

hmmm.... i don`t know how to describe my performance in the OBG and paediatrics internals. both of them did not go as well as i had hoped them to go.... it was quite a task to prepare for the paediatrics internals, 3 days, 30 odd topics. i ended up skipping some unimportant topics and not revising fully what i had read....

don`t know what else to write about now.....bye for now!
