EDIT: There’s a known issue with unlocking Minion Card gifts that were supposed to unlock simply by owning the Van Helsing games. This will be fixed in the next patch in a few days!

Major changes and fixes

• Added the Minion Cards feature
• Finishing low level maps with higher level characters is awarded now with some XP (instead of nothing)
• Added a new camera mode (Dynamic Camera), enabled by default, but can be switched off in the Options menu
• “My Friends” filter has been added in leaderboards
• “Ready” / “Not ready” button was added to the campaign map in cooperative mode for the clients
• Fixed a bug that caused black screen upon opening the leaderboard through the zoom-in / fade in animation, after starting a new game.
• Fixed some achievements which only unlocked on the Tier 4 maps instead of Tier 2 maps (as was stated in the achievement description)

Minor bug fixes

• As a safety measure, from now the player needs to press and hold the corresponding button to delete or overwrite the character
• Several text corrections in all localizations
• Fixed the names of the Epic items in the Hungarian localization
• Added footstep sounds for the heroes
• My Rank filter works fine in the leaderboard
• The trap cooldown enchants now work correctly
• Added the mana cost description and changed the icon for the Disintegration Ray skill for the Sorceress
• Added new artifacts
• Minor performance improvements

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut will undergo a backend system transfer soon as the current framework, Parse is getting discontinued at the end of the month.

Therefore, we are migrating to GameSparks – and the transfer is in progress as the tester team is already hard at work as we speak, testing the beta update for the game client so we can push the update live as soon as we can.

The transfer will approximately take 1 week counting from the end of this month.

During this period, it is strongly advised to play the game in offline mode as various anomalies might occur if you try to go online.

Although we are hard at work on our main project, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr at the moment, we are trying to focus on this update now as much as we can in order to get the update up and running as soon as possible.

One of these are the MINION CARDS. These cards will grant the players a minion, who will follow the player characters in their battles. They come in three categories: Common, Rare and Godlike.

You can equip these cards on the campaign map, you can see your collection here as well, each category will have 6 slots for cards.

With the content update, every player will get a free common card. If you own The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, you’ll also get the Domesticated Vrikolak minion, and if you own The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II, you don’t actually get a minion… but a companion! That’s right, the Godlike minion card features the legendary Lady Katarina!

You can buy more minions in the Store’s Special Offer with Dream Shards if you’d like to collect them all!

Other gameplay adjustments in this free update will be:

• Friends only filter in Leaderboards
• Ready / Not ready button in co-operative mode for clients
• Dynamic Camera mode
• Finishing low level maps with higher level characters will now award some XP
• Several bugfixes, including achievements that unlocked in Tier 4 instead of Tier 2

We’ll post the full changelog when the content update goes live. But when? Well, if the Ink is calm enough, hopefully next week! If there are weird things crawling out of unholy caves, then maybe a few days more, but still, fairly soon.

The first week of the new year has passed, so by now hopefully everybody has returned from their long winter slumber to the realspace (we certainly have)! Now it’s time to thank you for your good wishes during the Holiday Season, as well for your love and support during 2016! It was an intense year, and we were busy too – even though we haven’t release a new title.

However!

We were hard at work making Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr, pushing the limits of the ARPG genre, and pushing the limits of our engine, working with new rendering techniques, creating new environments, and so on. It’s shaping up to be something amazing, and we’re eager to hear your opinions this year!

The narrative background is also getting some original materials, as at the end of the year we released the first free eBook in The Caligari Archivum series, and we’re ready to release more in the following weeks! Until then, download the first episode of „Above and Beyond” by Áron Németh from the Black Library for free!

Also, in 2016 we got more confident at porting games to consoles, better with each new release: The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II was released on Xbox One, with its DLCs, and later an Extended Edition. At the end of the year, World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap was also released, to be lined up in the January Games with Gold package. We’re really happy with the reception, players have tons of fun with the co-op, we’re receiving good feedback, and we’re seeing some sceptics  of the tower defense genre getting hooked in the fast paced action, which is amazing. We suggest you try it if you haven’t, this month it’s free, and we’re really proud of the port. Also, it’s a really fun game!

While working on the third Van Helsing game to be released on Xbox One, we’re coming to PlayStation 4 soon as well this year with the first in the trilogy, and we’re paying good attention to the capabilities of the DualShock 4 controller and the Vita remote play function (and there’s a Platinum trophy)! Also we lined up the sequels and Deathtrap to be ported on the PlayStation 4, so hopefully, within a reasonable timeframe, the entire franchise will be available on three platforms!

With all this new experience with the two consoles, we’re hoping that Inquisitor – Martyr will be an excellent experience on PS4 and Xbox One as well!

So, another busy year ahead, and there will be much more to talk about, so check back for more news and updates!

Behold the new rendering of the nebulae!

Tamás Mélykuti, our Senior Engine Coder shares some insights:

“When I started to work on the look of the in-game nebulae, I collected and looked at multiple references, such as the Hubble photos to see how the nebulae react to light. I also looked at digital art, paintings to see how different artists were inspired. This is how I found Teun van der Zalm, whose space art impressed me greatly.

Since these are not paintings, but mostly particles simulated and rendered in Houdini, I thought it would be interesting to try to make these work in real time 3D on the screen. We contacted the artist and asked him if he would be interested in the experiment, and he agreed to it. After a few days (after rendering and simulating hundreds of millions of particles) we both looked at the first shots, satisfied with the result.”
