South Asian students attacked in London

A group of South Asian Muslim students were attacked near City University in London, ranked among the best 500 universities in the world, last Thursday. At about 8 in the evening, a group of 30 youths attacked the Muslim students with poles, bricks and sticks, shouting racist abuse. Three of them were also stabbed.

Cyclone Phyan intensifies; Mumbai on alert

A cyclonic storm, which is being called Phyan by the Met office, is developing over the Arabian Sea off the north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts. It’s likely to hit Mumbai as well as inland Maharashtra on Wednesday bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall. The seventh and final ODI between India and Australia to be played in Mumbai is most likely to be affected due the impending cyclone. For the first time, Mumbai faces untimely rains of this intensity.

Briton gets 18 years for racial killing

A London court Tuesday sentenced a Briton to a minimum of 18 years in prison for the "racially-aggravated" murder of Indian Navy officer Kunal Mohanty in March 2009. Christopher Miller, 25, had knifed 30-year-old Mohanty in the neck as he walked to a restaurant with his friends in Glasgow. Miller claimed in court that the incident was 'botched mugging' but a jury at the High Court in Glasgow returned a unanimous verdict of murder.

Raj Thackeray's suspended MLAs to apologise?

Leaders of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have said that they are ready to "express regrets" to the House for their unruly scenes on Monday. Four MNS MLAs had attacked Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi for taking oath in Hindi. Now, they are willing to apologise to the Assembly, but not to Azmi. All four attackers were immediately suspended from the House for the next four years.

Jessica's dying gift, eyes for two

Jessica Lall may not be alive on Tuesday but her eyes may be watching news reports of her killer enjoying night life in the national capital while on parole. The family of the 34-year-old model, who was shot dead in a posh bar in south Delhi area 10 years ago, had donated her eyes after the incident. It had given new lease of life to two visually challenged people -- one man and a woman.

Cyclone alert for Gujarat, Maharashtra

The weather office Tuesday sounded a cyclone alert for the coastal regions of south Gujarat and north Maharashtra, where it is expected to make a landfall in the early hours of Thursday. Weather scientists are tracking a deep depression formed in the Southeast and adjoining Central Arabian Sea, which is moving in the northwest direction and to hit south Gujarat.
