A True Nashville Star

Chris Young seemed to come out of nowhere in 2006, winning that year’s edition of Nashville Star. His self-titled debut album produced two marginal hits, but no standout success. The album’s material simply wasn’t on par with this young man’s talent and potential.

With the release of The Man I Want To Be, Young now has a winning showcase for his rich baritone. Listening to his honest and sometimes emotionally weathered delivery, it’s hard to imagine that Young is just 24 years old; he possesses the stylistic and emotional maturity of a man twice his age. One feels as if he’s lived every word he sings. His is a voice born to sing country music. And that he does in spades on his sophomore album. That Makes Me kicks things off with a foot-stomping, confident declaration of his country roots. Lead single Voices expands on this theme, touting small-time family values. Young raises the roof again on the fun Twenty-One Candles, with its fast, auctioneer-like vocals. The breezy The Shoebox is a gentle reminder to stop and reflect on what’s important in life. Deservedly, Young finally has his breakout hit with Getting You Home (The Black Dress Song), peppered with risqué lyrics and his sensual delivery.

The heart of the album lies in its ballads, most notably The Dashboard. Young weaves an effective narrative, telling the story of a brother heading off to war, asking the other to look after his beloved truck. With just the right amount of sincerity and conviction, he wrings the emotion, not the novelty, out of the song. Credit should be given to writer Monty Criswell, who visits a theme that has recently been overused and crafts something fresh with the song’s unexpected twist at the end. Another common theme, unexpected pregnancy, is evident in It Takes A Man, but Young’s subtlety results in a believable and honest portrayal of a man coming to grips with fatherhood. The album’s title track is the one moment with the potential to sound tired and clichéd. Again, Young allows the warmth and nuances of his voice to sell the song, and he succeeds brilliantly.

Two unexpected surprises add to the refreshing diversity of this set. Young duets with Willie Nelson on Rose In Paradise, easily holding his own with the country veteran. The story song is also one of the most enjoyable collaborations of Willie’s career. Young tackles Tony Joe White’s classic Rainy Night In Georgia, and the song is easily his finest vocal performance to date. He also breathes new life into lyrics that have been covered by no less than Hank Williams, Ray Charles, Aaron Neville and Conway Twitty. Young can now claim the definitive country version of the song; his smoldering phrasing adds just enough sincerity to make it his own. This will easily be a staple in his shows for years to come.

With The Man I Want To Be, Chris Young has proven he’s more than just a reality-show contestant trying to gain a foothold in country music He has succeeded. He is an authentic and original country artist, through and through. At this early stage in his career, his potential is unlimited, reminding one of a young George Strait back in 1985. His career trajectory could certainly follow the same path; this Nashville star is undeniably on the rise.

Reader review: Jamey Johnson and Randy Houser

Gab friends Bobbi and Jim Bowles were lucky enough to catch a recent Jamey Johnson and Randy Houser show and then were nice enough to send a few pictures and a review my way. Enjoy.

We went to the CMT tour with Jamey Johnson and Randy Houser on Thursday th 12th. It was so much fun! Randy Houser played for about an hour. All of his set was really good. I didnt get the set list to know which songs he played but he played Boots On and a couple new ones he said were to be on his new cd. Then Jamey Johnson came on, he opened up with Lonesome Song. He played for about an hour. The crowd sang In Color to him and he brought out his sister and brother in law so they could see us all singing to him. Then he called out Randy to jam with him. And they did, for about another hour. They played bob segar,johnny cash and others. Both bands were on the stage and the setting was unbelievable. We were front row for the entire night and they sounded perfect! I wish i could pass the set list along with this, sorry. But no matter what they would have played, they would have sounded good! Both have amazing voices and sounded so true to their cd's. Which we bought and had the bands sign them minus jamey and randy. what a great night. enjoy the pics!

The most anticlimactic John Rich story ever

Well this sucks, not that I was wishing any ill will towards John Rich or anything, this story is just so dang anticlimactic.

John Rich finally had his day in court on Friday in regards to the charges (my first report here back in March) against him for hitting and harassing ex-Nashville Star contestant, Jared Ashley. John and others testified and Nashville judge, John Aaron Holt, dismissed all charges against the papa-to-be.

Yep, just like that. Like I said, extremely anticlimactic.

I'm trying to fix the pictures

Sorry about the look of the pictures, I'm trying to get them fixed. I forgot I had set up my Photobucket account with my old card that was attached to a checking account that I don't have anymore. I forgot, that is, until all my friggin' pictures disappeared here and I got a notice from Photobucket saying they couldn't bill my account. Well duh. Anyway, went over to get everything all switched over and changed and Photobucket will not let a person change payment methods without having them stop the current recurring payment first. And here's the kicker, you can't stop the recurring payment yourself, you have to wait to have customer service do it. How dumb is that? It's especially dumb in my case considering that the recurring payments should have stopped automatically when they couldn't bill my friggin' card. I would think that if anything would stop the recurring payments, that would. Heck, I can't even switch over to a different payment method such as Paypal or checks. So now I have to wait for Photobucket's people to stop payments from a nonexisting account so I can replace it with my current account. But of course I first have to wait for an email from customer service.

So. Frustrating.

So please everyone, for the love of buttered toast, keep your fingers and toes crossed that Photobucket's service department will be faster than say every other service department in the civilized world who responds via email. If not, then you may be looking at the lovely white "upgrade to pro" pictures for a while. That or I may end up having to change photo sites. Not too sure which would be the lesser of two evils. Or which would make me want to pull my hair out the least. Wish me luck.

Update: As you can see everything is back to normal. Thankfully Photobucket works fast and it only took a couple of hours for them to get everything fixed up.
