Two books by Kenneth Grahame added to reading list

Al Young Studios has added two new titles to its family-cenetered reading list. Both books are by Kenneth Grahame, perhaps best known for The Wind in the Willows.

"Most people," said Nancy Young, "are familiar with Kenneth Grahame's classic, but may not be aware of his two earlier books. Weritten about ten years prior to The Window in the Willows, they are filled with the same genius."

The two books, The Golden Age and Dream Days, are episodic, presenting vignettes from Grahame's childhood. Written with the deft pen of his genius, he vividly and insightfully helps us feel again the way a child feels.

"His descriptions of characters, settings, time, and motivation—not to mention his turn of phrase—are masterful. His reminiscences speak to mind and heart with a truth that enlightens the one and warms the other."

The Golden Days was published in 1895. Dream Days appeared three years later, and The Wind in the Willows was published ten years after that.

Addition of the two titles to the Al Young Studios reading list brings the total for the site's book list to 108. The list was first formulated in 1998, and has been part of alyoung.com for nearly ten years.

Al Young Studios announces participation in BYU 2008 Education Week

Al Young Studios announced today that it will sell the following prints at the BYU Bookstore during Education Week, August 20 - 22, 2008.

The images will be available as 5 in. x 7 in. prints and 8 in. x 10 in. prints. In addition, one CGI print, I went to hunt beasts in the forests as a 9 in. x 12 in. print, will also be for sale.

These prints will be available for signing by the artists on the 3rd floor of the BYU Bookstore from noon Wednesday through Friday of EDucation Week. The two artists will also participate in the Artwork Unveiling on Wednsday, August 20th, at 10:00AM MDT at the BYU Bookstore. Admission to the unveiling is free.

New Database Expands Access to The Storybook Home Journal

A topical index now provides access to the content of The Storybook Home Journal, as well as features published in various media by Al and Nancy Young since 1981. This initial release of the look-up tool contains information on 531 articles accessible through a hierarchical list of 318 topics.

A link to the database appears near the top of the site's home page, under the heading: Article Database: Insights For A Richer Life.

The Storybook Home Journal, now in its 8th year of publication, accounts for 473 of the article descriptions in the database. The other 57 articles range from transcripts of Nancy's speeches, published by Deseret Book Company, to Al's series of columns in professional journals.

"Our aim," explained Nancy Young, "Is to provide a service to our subscribers and to site visitors who want to know more about the content of The Storybook Home Journal as well as the content of the site."

Each article description gives the title of the article, the author's name, an article summary, a word count, an illustration count, and publication information. A link from each Journal-article description takes visitors to the issue of The Storybook Home Journal containing the article. For articles published on the site, a link takes the visitor straight to it. Other articles are simply listed with complete bibliographic information. The detail page for each article also provides help with bibliographic citation.

Of the 318 topics in the database, 48 topics focus on house and home, 45 pertain to arts and crafts. Included among the topics is a list of 97 authors and illustrators who are either the subject or the creator of an article or illustration accoompanying an article. "The growing list is becoming a Who's Who of fine literature and illustration," said Nancy.

Gardening accounts for 19 topics. Reading lists, music, money management, creativity and problem solving, giftedness, childhood, career, and numerous other topics complete the list.

In addition to serving the needs of subscribers and visitors, the database will play a roll in planning content for both The Storybook Home Journal and alyoung.com.

The tool will be updated with each issue of the Journal. Articles published elsewhere by the artists and writers at Al Young Studios will also be added to the database, along with information about articles published on alyoung.com. "The database provides a topical guide to the site," said Nancy, "Which now consists of several thousand files. Neither the site map nor a site-search capability is really adequate anymore."
