Gov. Quinn releases funding for Cole Hall, Stevens Building projects

Officials at Northern Illinois University welcomed news from Gov. Pat Quinn Wednesday that he has released $10.3 million for construction projects. The money will be used to address two of the most pressing space issues on campus – repurposing Cole Hall and renovating the Stevens Building.

Veteran Filipino human rights activist Marie Hilao-Enriquez will be the featured speaker for the next installment of the John A. Niemi International Lecture Series.

Her talk on human rights and social movements in the Philippines will be held from 6 to 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, in the Cavan Auditorium of Gabel Hall (Room 126). The presentation is titled, “An Organic Intellectual Speaks Up: Social Movements and Human Rights—the Philippine Case.” The event is free and open to the public.

Job, internship fairs scheduled at NIU in February

Students looking for a major-related career experience prior to graduation or to jumpstart their career plans are encouraged to attend the February job and internship fairs at Northern Illinois University.

The Internship Fair is Wednesday, Feb. 17, and the Job Fair is Wednesday, Feb. 24. Both fairs are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are held at the NIU Convocation Center.

Kinesiology professor Connie fox named associate dean in College of Education

Longtime kinesiology professor Connie Fox is the new associate dean in the College of Education at Northern Illinois University.

Fox, who had served as acting associate dean since September, replaces Carol Logan Patitu. Patitu has returned to teaching in the Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher Education.

Anthropologist travels to Kenya on Fulbright Scholar grant

It has already been a long and cold winter, but every day is warm and sunny for Sibel Kusimba, a Northern Illinois University professor of anthropology.

Kusimba won a competitive Fulbright Scholar grant last year to teach and conduct research in Kenya. She began her work last August at Egerton University near the agricultural town of Njoro. Located in the central part of the country, Njoro is about a two-hour-and-30-minute drive northwest of the capital city of Nairobi.

James Russell Brown to present organ recital Feb. 7 at NIU

James Russell Brown, professor of organ in the Northern Illinois University School of Music, will present a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, on the 1983 Martin Ott organ.

Brown will perform “Allegro,” from Symphonie VI (Charles-Marie Widor), “Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele” (Johann Sebastian Bach) “Passacaglia in c minor” (J. S. Bach), “Alléluias sereins d’une âme qui desire le ciel,” from “L’Ascension” (Olivier Messiaen) and “Prelude and Fugue on ALAIN” (Maurice Duruflé).

School of Theatre and Dance presents 'Private Lives'

A different seat, a different point of view, a different kind of performance for a well-known play.

The audience will be seated on all four sides of the stage for the Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance production of Noel Coward’s “Private Lives,” which will be performed in the round in the Stevens Building Players Theatre from Thursday, Jan. 28, through Sunday, Jan. 31, and from Wednesday, Feb. 3, through Sunday, Feb 7.
