While the sports world is in an uproar about Manny Ramirez testing positive for performance enhancing drugs, ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre has told the Minnesota Vikings that he’ll remain retired.

Reports throughout the week have claimed Favre was meeting with Vikings coach Brad Childress to discuss returning yet again from retirement. However, reports also claimed that the shoulder problems that plagued Favre at the end of the year last year had not healed enough for the gunslinger to return.

While I don’t doubt for a minute Favre’s desire to stick it to the Packers front office, I believe the collateral damage that would be done to the Packer fans and the health of his shoulder will keep Favre on the sidelines this year.

Of course, thanks to the golden boy’s many tearful retirements that didn’t stick, I’m sure well be subjected to several more speculative stories about Favre’s plans for the upcoming season.

Wow, talk about a busy couple of hours! The Chicago Bears, fresh off trading for Pro-Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler, have ALSO reportedly signed former Pro-Bowl offensive tackle Orlando Pace.

Pace, a 7 time former Pro-Bowler, has struggled with injuries in the past three years and was cut by the St. Louis Rams for financial reasons. However, if he can find a way to stay healthy, Pace will provide solid protection for the Bears’ new QB.

Financial details of the deal have not yet been released but I think it’s safe to say Bears fans will be dancing in the street after these two moves.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer is reporting that disgruntled Denver Bronco quarterback, Jay Cutler, has been traded to the Chicago Bears for two first-round picks, a third-round pick and quarterback Kyle Orton.

The relationship between Cutler and the Broncos was apparently irreparably damaged when news surfaced of a failed attempt to trade Cutler for former Patriot quarterback Matt Cassel. Several Bronco officials claim to have made several attempts to repair the relationship with the Pro-Bowl QB but were reportedly rebuffed by Cutler.

Cutler and his agent claim to have never received any such communication from the team, but whichever version is the truth, it appears that Cutler’s days in Denver are over.

If the reports are accurate, Chicago gave up quite a haul for an expensive but young quarterback who should provide the stability under center the Bears have lacked for years. It is unclear whether Orton will take over for Cutler as the Broncos starter but Denver may also opt to use a high draft pick on a new quarterback of the future, after trading away the player many thought would fill that roll for years to come.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch is reporting that the St. Louis Rams have cut former Pro Bowl left tackle, Orlando Pace.

Pace was the #1 pick overall in 1997 and has anchored the Ram’s offensive line ever since. He has made 7 trips to the Pro Bowl and appeared in 2 Super Bowls with the team.

Injuries have been a problem for Pace, however, and the Rams were able to save $6 million by cutting Pace. Rams GM Billy Devaney had been rumored to be shopping both Pace and wide receiver Torry Holt (who has asked for his release) but evidently found no takers for the two veterans.

Pace is 33 and despite missing a few games last season due to a knee injury, he’s not likely to be out of work for long.

Terrell Owens’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said the controversial wide receiver wouldn’t be unemployed for long, and it turns out, he was right.

The Buffalo Bills have signed the talented but troubled wide receiver to a one year deal worth $6.5 million just two days after the Dallas Cowboys cut T.O. to try and improve their team chemistry.

Owens will instantly become the star of the Bills’ offense, teaming up with Lee Evens to give 2nd year starter, quarterback Trent Edwards two reliable targets in the passing game. The Bills have struggled scoring touchdowns through the air and there’s no doubt T.O. will help improve that.

However, after yet another widely publicized fued with teammates, the question surrounding T.O. is not “is he good?” but rather “is he worth it?” Owens is considered by many to be a clubhouse cancer, clashing with several teammates, especially quarterbacks. For the signing, and the Bills to be successful, Edwards will not only have to keep control of Owens ego as well as the offense; something that’s proven to be no easy task.

The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly released wide receiver Terrell Owens.

Despite giving the often controversial T.O. a new 4 year, $34 million deal last year, the Cowboys elected to take the $9 million salary cap hit in order to improve team chemistery.

Owens had publicly fueded with quarterback Tony Romo, tight end Jason Witten, and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, fueling speculation the team would release the talented but troublesome widereceiver.

In Owens’ three seasons in Dallas, he averaged 78 receptions, over 12 touchdowns, and nearly 1,200 yards per season. Roy Williams, acquired from Detroit last season, will be asked to replace that offensive production without producing the locker room acrimony that T.O. has become famous for creating.

Long time St. Louis Ram, Torry Holt, has reportedly asked the team for his release.

Holt is a 7 time Pro Bowler and is the last big name piece of the Rams’ Greatest Show on Turf days. He has averaged 80 receiving yards per game over his 10 year career, but struggled mightily last season, making just 64 catches and three touchdowns.

The Rams have been rumored to be trying to trade both Holt and Orlando Pace, but have so far received little interest in either. And, with free agent wide receivers being signed across the league, Holt is hoping to be released quickly in order to catch on with another team as a starter.

If the Rams are unable to find a team willing to Trade for the veteran wide-out, they will likely release him before the 17th when Holt would be due a roster bonus of $1.25 million. The move would save the Rams an estimated $8 million in salary cap space.

Baltimore signed the face of the franchise to a three year deal worth between $20-25 million.

Fellow free agent Terrell Suggs had suggested that Lewis and other Ravens players should offer the team a home town discount to stay together, but Lewis insisted that he’d accept the best offer he received.
