If you have ever wanted to have an online business, this is an excellent way to get started without having to write your own eBook. You will want to edit the PLR eBook before you make it available for sale, but editing is much easier than writing from the very beginning.

Learning how to start your online business using this method will help you to build a passive income stream for years to come. You will be able to repeat the process over and over to earn even more money on the internet.

Just think of how many niche sites you could have if you took advantage of great PLR.

“10 Widgets To Rock Your WordPress,”

“Out of the box, WordPress is so easy to install and setup even a caveman can do it. And now that you have your shiny new toy, lets pimp it out. We all know WordPress gives you the ability to create custom themes, custom post types, and custom widgets. There are literally thousands of third party apps and themes to pick from, but you may not know which ones will truly Rock Your WordPress. We’ll talk about 10 Widgets (and maybe even sneak some theme goodies in) that you can add today, giving your site instant appeal, help with maintenance, and keep visitors coming back. You won’t want to miss this session.”

Thom Allen

When I was learning to use WordPress, Thom Allen was one of the first WordPress geeks I met. He started and ran PodCamp Utah. His since of humor shines in this bio I found: “I Read/Write/Code, talk about Software, Cloud Computing, Mobile, and take pictures, but not of cats, I’m allergic. US Marine. http://gplus.to/thomallen”

Thom most certainly over delivered, but covered all the major areas you will need plugins to enhance your site: Backup, Caching, SEO, Media and Social Sharing.

Thom’s Rocking Recommendations and my notes and links.

WordPress Backup – Free Plugins from the WordPress Directory

WP -DB Backup – This is the free backup I use for most of my small sites and free installs for clients. I have it set up so emails are sent to my email according to how often I add new posts and updates.

WP – DB Manager – This free backup system is highly rated in the WordPress Plugins Directory.

Backup – Paid Plugins

Vault Press – Backup and Security Plugin by Automattic with a cheap monthly payment plan.

Locker – Monthly payments that include multiple sites…cheap.

Off Site Backup – This would be backup from companies like Mozy.com.

Backup Buddy - mentioned by someone in the SLC group and Matt Mullenweg in his “2011 State of The Word” address. This is my favorite! We install it on all of our clients sites and recently used it to save a site.

WordPress Cache Plugins – Make your site run faster!

W3 Total Cash -My recommendation.

Now a Cache plugin can look overwhelming when it comes to installing it. But don’t worry I found the perfect videos by Chuck of CyberSmartWebMarketing.com.

WP Super Cache – Found in the WordPess Directory…now I have to agree with Mr. Cyber Smart on this one…W3 Total cache has been a better plugin.

Special Note- I always disable my cache plugin while I am working on a site. If it is on, the updates do not show up immediately, so it is hard to see changes.

Media Plugins

Photo:

Next Gen Gallery -This free plugin just happens to be one of the most popular plugins in the WordPress Plugins Directory. It is full of features you did not even know you needed.

Light Box 2 – Enhance the view of your images with this simple but nice pop-up of your image.

WP Smushit – This plugin strips out the meta data from your pictures, decreasing site load time. If you are using a lot of images you want this plugin.

Video:

Vipers Video Quick Tags – Embeds videos, although the new 3.0 versions give you the video embed options this still gives you more options.

Audio:

Power Press – Includes full iTunes support, web audio/video media players and more.

Pod Press – Adds a lot of features designed to make WordPress the ideal platform for hosting a podcast.

Audio Player – This is the Audio plugin I have used. It is really simple. It is the plugin that CopyBlogger uses for his weekly podcast: “Internet Marketing For Smart People.”

Social Sharing Plugins

Share This – Adds links at the bottom of posts to share via Email, StumbleUpon, Digg, Facebook, Twitter. This is a lite weight tool.

Social Sharing Tool Kit- Easy sharing and connecting on social networks. Display on posts or use widgets or shortcode. You have a big choice in size of the buttons.

JetPack - This is a whole series of plugins that gives self hosted WordPress sites the some of the powers of WordPress.com sites. There are parts of this plugin I am not interested in…but I use some of the parts as stand alone plugins. For example I have a client that wanted a spell, style and grammar checker so we added After The Deadline.

Social Share - Adds share icons at the bottom of your post. Gives the option of two sizes. This one is easy to add to your site and gives you the most popular sharing choices. It is a little more lite weight than most social sharing plugins.

SEO plugins for WordPress

Yoast WordPress SEO – Free All In One available in the WordPress Directory. WordPress Beginner gives you full installation instructions.

All In One SEO Pack – Free and simple to use. Instructions for configuring All In One SEO.

Advanced Settings for All In One SEO

WordPress Stats Plugins

WordPress.com Stats – Now part of the JetPack series…but this plugin alone is easy on load time.

Woopra – An extensive analytics tool you will love. This starts with a free plan with upgrades. Installation Tips.

Clicky by Yoast - Integrate this paid service into your WordPress site.

Google Analyticactor - Get your Google analytics right in your dashboard. This my favorite, when I am using Google for my analytics.

Whew! Thanks Thom.

Now remember taking the time to choose the right WordPress Plugins for your site makes all the difference in how the plugins will perform in the future.

P.S. Do you have some base plugins you would like to add? Or would you share your experience with the one listed.

Yet, WordPress would not be the great platform it is without the plugins.

WordPress Plugin Complaints

Plugins not working

Having to upgrade plugins

Security problems with plugins

Finding the best plugins

Solutions For WordPress Plugin Complaints

Finding the best plugins is just logical. Choosing the best plugins from the starting gate, goes a long way to solving the other problems.

Start with WordPress.org

“Plugins can extend WordPress to do almost anything you can imagine. In the directory you can find, download, rate, and comment on all the best plugins the WordPress community has to offer.” WordPress Codex

The WordPress directory currently has 16,355 plugins available for download. Every plugin in the directory has to follow a strict criteria before they are posted. Also Mark Riley of Automattic checks each plugin out.

Good plugin developers will have a source page you can go to for information and support for the plugin. They will also answer questions and give fixes on the WordPress.org Forum.

Ask Other WordPress Lovers and Developers – Every WordPress lover and developer has their favorite plugins. If they are posting about WordPress, the chances are your will find their list of plugins on their site.

Trusted WordPress Plugin Developer, Vladimir Prelovac gives the plugins he uses.

Warrior Forum – No matter what question you have there is always someone with a solution on the Warrior Forum. The key is to follow the advise of those who know what they are doing. Istvan Horvath is my favorite WordPress Warrior, he gives solid advice.

Cheat - When you find something you like on a WordPress site, look at the source code. FireFox use to give you this option but has recently removed it. So now I use Safari to view the page source.

In this example you can see the plugins I am using on Newbie Lifeline.

Plugins Not Working Complaint

There are several reason plugins may now be working on your site.

Your theme and the plugin is not compatible.

The plugin needs to be updated for the latest WordPress updates. You will need to watch for and keep your plugins updated.

Bad plugin….choose your plugins wisely. There are so many options, do not spend your time with a plugin that is not working properly, look for a new one.

Updating Plugins Complaint

WordPress has made it soooo easy to update your plugins. You get a warning in your dashboard and can update your plugins right there.

Updates will often follow major WordPress updates or security updates.

My Plugin Advice

Use as few plugins as possible – Plugins can slow down the load time of your site.

Choose plugins that have good support – Whether your plugin is free from the directory or one you purchase, double check how well the developer gives support to the users. And how often he updates the plugin.

Choose plugins that have a high rating – Plugins in the directory have a star rating system. Use plugins recommended by people you trust.

On the WordPress.org forum you can also see what plugins people are complaining about and which ones they like.

For security, keep your plugins updated and remove any plugins that you are not using. Always use plugins from trusted sources.

Keep your love hate relationship to a minimum… choose only recommended plugins. In fact my next post will be on the Plugins recommended at WordCamp SLC.

Sheila

P.S. How do you keep your relationship with WordPress Plugins a happy one?

My Take

Ease of Use – I will second that! To all of you that might feel like you are struggling I say stick with it! For all that WordPress can do, it is worth any stops you find along the way. This is the easiest format to learn. And there is plenty of help.

WP101.com has and excellent set of WordPress Tutorial videos. I always include these videos in my clients packages.

Need Help? I would be glad to help you get started. I know what it is like to learn something new…someone helped me to get a jump start and I can help you.

Community – Right from the get go I knew I wanted my site to be on WordPress. I Googled “WordPress Geeks Utah” and found Joseph Scott of Automattic and his local geek club. My journey has gone from Newbie, to setting up WordPress sites for others.

WordPressJunkies.com - WordPress lovers community.

Salt Lake City Local WordPress Club: WPSLC.com

You will find the WordPress Codex and the WordPress Forum ideal communities to start with. Ask questions and answer questions for others.

Themes - The new 2011 default theme is a great theme the average WordPress user will love. If you plan on choosing a Free WordPress Theme I suggest using the themes in the WordPress Theme Repository. They have met the WordPress criteria for clean coding.

More on Themes coming up…yeah! New stuff happening.

Plugins – You do not need over 1500 plugins! You just need the plugins that will enhance and make your site more secure.

More on this in a future post from my WordCamp experience.

WordCamp – Find and attend a WordCamp in your area. Why should you attend WordCamp? infographic.

Thanks to Joseph Scott of Automattic and the local sponsors that made WordCamp SLC possible.

Sheila

P.S. Have you attended a WordCamp? What would help you use WordPress better?

More and more local business owners are making the move to take their business online. It is a smart move that is keeping me busy.

80% of people search the web to find local business. Having a website is the first step in establishing your online presence.

I have found that creating an online presence can sound very overwhelming. Business owners do not need one more thing to do. Just dealing with the day to day business affairs is enough.

Would your offline line business fail because you do not go online? No. There are many successful off line business that are not online. However, they are missing a tremendous chance to grow and expand. And I must admit there could be some businesses that have unique circumstances that would not be supported by an Internet presence. I will take bets that percentage is very small.

Bottom line is that people like to be comfortable, and staying with the old format is comfortable. Exploring new territory is uncomfortable. Expanding and getting bigger can feel uncomfortable. I think it is called growing pains.

Now making the most of that online website is the key. You can have a website that is a beautiful brochure for your services. Or you can have a website that really communicates with your customers. A dynamic website does take some time and attention. But in the long run it is time and attention that pays off.

When it comes to creating a dynamic site, WordPress is the best choice hands down. WordPress has become so much more than a blogging platform. It is a complete Content Management System (CMS).

Say what? CMS is a way for the average person to create and manage a website. WordPress is more than a way to blog. It is the best way to have any type of website you desire.

Some of the biggest companies in the world use WordPress for their serious projects; Ebay, Yahoo, GE, CNN, Ford, Sony and Samsung, to name a few.

By nature, WordPress is very powerful. It can be as complex or as simple as you wish.

There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Get your site online and decide who will run it. You may have the skills and time. Maybe one of your staff would be the perfect choice. Or hiring someone to manage your site could be some of the best money you spend every month.

Actually it is fun to build websites, fan pages and see clients show up in Google Places. Busy….but fun.

Sheila

P.S. Do you look online before you shop?

What is RSS feed? and What does it do? are very valid questions. My post RSS Feed to Email for Your Readers on WordPress brought in more emails with questions than any other post I written. So let’s clear up those questions. My post RSS Feed to Email for Your Readers on WordPress brought in more emails with questions than any other post I written. So let’s clear up those questions.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it is a method of syndicating your blog content, video and audio. You create the content, video or audio publish it and the feed sends that information or a summary of that information out to the web.

Most of you have heard about subscribing to a blog via RSS feed so lets start out with this simple video showing how and RSS feed has made it easy for your to keep track of your favorite websites.

Here are several readers you can use.

NewsGator – Pick one of NewsGator’s free, award-winning RSS readers for Windows, Mac or iPhone.

GoogleReader – Access your reader right in your Google Email. Easy, and the choice I see most often used.

Bloglines – A fast way to keep track of all your favorite websites.

How do I access my Google Reader?

To find your RSS feed Google reader you will need to go to your Gmail account. In the very top tool bar you will see reader. Click that to see all the updates for the blogs you subscribed to by reader.

What is my RSS feed in WordPress?

Blogging platforms like WordPress, Blogger and TypePad have built in your RSS feed. In WordPress your feed looks like this: http://www.newbielifeline.com/feed.

If I already have an RSS feed in WordPress why do I need FeedBurner?

Well, actually you don’t, FeedBurner is only one many online methods of burning your feed. It just happens to be one of the most commonly used services. Some of these services are paid and some are free.

Using a burner does have advantages. A feed burner will:

No matter what feed reader your readers are using, they will be able to subscribe to your site.

Feed burning makes it easy to format your RSS feeds for different directories and readers.

You get analytics of who is subscribing to your site, either by RSS reader or RSS email.

How do I create my RSS feed in Feedburner?

You can set up your FeedBurner account or access your current account at http://feedburner.google.com. Simply follow the directions.

What WordPress Plugins should I use?

FeedBurner FeedSmith – maintained and suggested by Google, but not updated for a while, it seems: WordPress Codex.

FD Feedburner Plugin - This plugin can be loaded right from your dashboard. This is the plugin I use.

TwitterFeed – This plugin makes it easy to send your blog posts and the blog posts you like to twitter. For more on this see this post: http://www.wikihow.com/Add-an-RSS-Feed-to-Twitter

What is the difference between subscribing by RSS feed to email and an Optin Subscription?

RSS feed to email is done via your feed. It is often used as an easy way to get your readers to subscribe to your blog. They automatically receive an email every time you post.

People are familiar with email and from what I have researched, they prefer emails subscriptions over using a reader.

Optin email is when you ask someone for their email address in return for some kind of offer. The offer may be a newsletter, a course, video or a free report.

But Wait – RSS feed does much more to syndicate your information.

Syndication benefits both the websites providing information and the websites displaying it. For the receiving site, content syndication is an effective way of adding greater depth and immediacy of information to its pages, making it more attractive to users. For the transmitting site, syndication drives exposure across numerous online platforms. This generates new traffic for the transmitting site — making syndication a relatively cheap, free and easy form of advertisement.

However, as Search Engine Optimization has become an increasingly important topic among website owners and online marketers, content syndication has become a highly effective strategy for link building.

Links embedded within the syndicated content are typically optimized around anchor terms that will point an optimized link back to the website that the content author is trying to promote. These links tell the algorithms of the search engines that the website being linked to is an authority for the keyword that is being used as the anchor text tsunami. Wikipedia

Your RSS feed can take you along way to syndicating your site.

Feeds actually make the web go round. You have been using feeds and probably don’t even know it. For example Apple sends you music and video powered by a feed.

NetFlix uses a variety of custom feeds to give you the information you want. You receive updates on movies you are interested in via a feed.

Automated bookmarking occurs because of your feed.

You can use BookMarking tools like OnlyWire (WordPress Plugin). OnlyWire syndicates your content and articles to the web’s top social networking sites with a single button click.

When you set up an OnlyWire account and set up your social networking site logins, OnlyWire will submit your post to all of the sites simultaneously.

Alex Whalley has a must read post: “How to Automatically Syndicate/Bookmark Every Post You Publish” if you are ready to use your RSS feed for bookmarking.

Why should you care?

Bottom line, keeping track of your favorite sites and information is done by feed. And automatically syndicating your information to others is done by feed. This can be via, Twitter, Facebook, and social bookmarking sites and blog directories.

I hope this clears up your questions and sets you on the path of syndication.

It is an XML code that “feeds” out information from a site in an organized manner. The feed must be subscribed to and is read using an aggregator, or feed reader, tool. (Some feeds can also be subscribed to and set to send you a new email whenever the site is updated, but this is an option that the site has to make available to its users.” The Online Instructor

Why give your readers a subscribe to RSS feed by email option?

Your audience may not be into using an RSS reader

Email is a familiar tool

Your readers get an email every time you add a new post

RSS feed subscription on WordPress

Making it easy to subscribe to RSS feed via email on a WordPress site can be a little difficult. I know I went the rounds to figure it out.

First of all I wanted an RSS feed to email alternative to using FeedBurner. But I have come back to using FeedBurner for now. And because it is the Feed most people use I will be teaching you how to set up your email with FeedBurner.

I have noticed that most WordPress sites do not give this email option. And there are those that have the icon on their site but it is not set up right. So here is a tutorial to help you fix that.

What your need for set up

A social media plugin with an RSS email option

A Google Feedburner Feed

The correct URL to put into your plugin

Social Media Plugin

I use “Social Media Widget”: Adds links to all of your social media and sharing site profiles. Icons come in 3 sizes, 4 icon styles, and 4 animations.

This plugin gives you a widget you can drag into your sidebar. You can see the widget in action at the top of my sidebar.

Upload “Social Media Widget” right from your WordPress dashboard.
