Now in its 89th year, the “Singing” is a day-long country gospel convention held out-of-doors in a meadow at the base of Grandfather Mountain. Music begins at 8:30 am and continues throughout the day, with a break at midday for the sermon. Many families bring lawn chairs and picnics and make a day of seeing old friends and enjoying performances by top Southern Gospel groups. The 2013 speaker is Will Graham, grandson of Dr. Billy Graham. Scheduled music groups for 2013 include The Chuckwagon Gang, Michael Combs, George Hamilton IV, Terry Warren and The Cockman Family.

The “Singing” is a day-long gospel sing and fellowship featuring a dozen top gospel groups and sermon from a well known speaker. Held out-of-doors in a meadow at the base of Grandfather Mountain, music begins at 8:30 a.m. and continues throughout the day with a break at mid-day for the sermon. Many families bring lawn chairs and picnics and make a day of seeing old friends and enjoying performances by top Southern Gospel groups. Admission to the “Singing on the Mountain” is free, and camping (without hookups) is available on the grounds on a first come basis. The “Singing” grounds are located on US Highway 221, two miles north of Linville and one mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Eastern America’s highest elevation township has revamped its annual road race to take advantage of its rarified altitude. The Beech Mountain 10k ClimbMax, presented by BeechMtn.com, is set to challenge runners with a demanding course on Saturday, June 22. The race includes more than 800 total feet of elevation gain. The first two miles will be mostly downhill, winding along a scenic stretch of Beech Mountain Parkway toward the ski village. From that point, it’s a long, steady uphill climb – punctuated by several switchbacks and long-range vistas – to a height of 5,443 feet, just below the mountain’s summit. The route replaces a fairly challenging 5-mile course upon which the town hosted an event known as A Cool 5 for several years. Course-side lodging specials will be available, along with post-race activities. The entry fee for adults is $30 through May 20; and $35 from May 21 until race day. Race day registration is $40. Children 13 and under may register at any time for $20. Entry fees include a t-shirt, goodie bags, and post-race activities.

Blood, Sweat & Gears is a challenging to strenuous 100 mile bicycle ride, starting and ending at the Valle Crucis Elementary School, approximately 5 miles south of Boone, NC. The route roughly circle Boone through the outskirts of Watauga County, the heart of North Carolina's High Country. The terrain is constantly changing with hills of all lengths and curves too numerous to count. Highlight of the route include 21 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a strenuous climb over the 4500 foot gap at Snake Mountain and a 10 mile "flat" on old U.S. 421.

A sister act, including Jessica, Amanda, And Emily King, performing as Eyes of Emiline, is taking the country music scene in North Carolina by storm. Performing their own hip originals and some hot country covers, they play at restaurants, fairs, and festivals across the state and made a guest apperance at the Christmas Show of American Music Jubilee. An album of their original songs is entitled "Perfect," which aptly describes the harmony that is their specialty. Eyes of Emiline is currently the centerpiece in a band of extremely talented vetern musicians- Conoho Creek. On lead guitar is Ronnie Waters who also plays with Nantucket, recently inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. Ronnie is also in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame from his early years with Maggie Lee and the Percussions. Drummer Curtis "Crash" Bearden toured with the rock band, Mariah, in the 1980s opening for Bon Jovi. Robbie Hendricks of Diggerfoot plays bass guitar and vocals. Colgate Country Showdown winner for North & South Carolina, Sara Dew of Dew Point Rising will be joining Conoho Creek and The Eyes of Emiline for two special shows. Puss goes on to use his sly and clever ways to overcome an ogre, befriend a king and win the heart of a fair princess.

Nor’Banks Sailing is excited to be involved in the first year of the BIC SUP One Design Challenge in 2013. As sailors, we all instantly understood what this racing was about and got on board immediately. We have a great location for the event with shallow water, sandy bottom and big new pier. Our facility has lots of parking, restrooms and new showers so you can clean up after the racing is done. We have an active paddling community here and are only 1.5 hours from Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads area and hope to attract paddlers from that area also. It's called a One Design race because all riders use the same board model. The board used is BIC SUP's board. Don't miss out on the fun this year, bring your friends and family for a fun day on the water!

Come out for an evening of tales, mystery and haunts at the Candle Light Ghost Tours. Learn about the ghosts that haunt the old buildings that make up downtown Wilkesboro. Visit a cemetery where Civil War Soldiers are buried, stand in the jail cell Tom Dooley spent his last days, and listen to the stories of the haunted Smithey Hotel. Tickets will be sold on the Courthouse lawn at the museum and at the Wilkesboro Open Air Market the Friday before. Tours start at 7.30 pm.
