Small groups will be taken behind-the-scenes to areas not on the regular tour from down in the brig (ships jail) to high up in the fire control tower to large, complex engineering spaces. The tours will last approximately three hours. The price of $45 includes admission to the Ship. Friends of the Battleship members pay $35. You must be 12 years or older to participate. Wear comfortable, warm clothing and sturdy, rubber-soled shoes; bring a camera, but no large backpacks.

Civil War Re-enactment - Stoneman's Raid on Asheville - Nov. 14, 2009

In April 1865, Union forces under the command of General Alvan C. Gillem, acting on orders issued by General Stoneman, tried to attack Asheville via Swannanoa Gap. They were turned back by a Confederate force of infantry and artillery. Failing to take Asheville via Swannanoa Gap, they first moved south to Rutherfordton, then west, passing through Green River Plantation. Come to the Plantation and experience what it was like to be in that Civil War battle. Call for more information.

Begin with a farm that has been in the family since 1807. Add two proprietors, Dan and Tina Smith, who are totally dedicated to the art of crafting quality wines. Toss in fabulous one-of-a-kind events, and you have Cypress Bend Vineyards near Laurinburg.The Smiths' winemaking began in 2005, as they planted 30 acres with five varieties of muscadine grape. You can taste the results in 11 different table wines including one of the driest muscadines you can find. The cellar also provides Chardonnay and Syrah vintages. One of the neat things about Cypress Bend is its unique calendar. Jazzy Fridays feature live jazz every other week. Late September marks the Fall Harvest and Grape Stomp, and there's an annual Christmas Open House in December. The vineyard is open seven days a week for tastings and tours. Cypress Bend Vineyards. The exhibit will highlight the century of service the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross has offered our region. Historical artifacts and photographs will tell the story of the local Red Cross chapter, from its inception by a group of dedicated women in 1908, through two world wars, and into the 21st century. The exhibit will focus on the role women played in establishing the culture of volunteerism that exists in the Lower Cape Fear region and encourage visitors to reflect upon the importance of voluntary service in their community.

What would a Civil War Christmas have been like during the years 1861-65? A re-enacting group will share their interpretation of what a Civil War Christmas was like. We don't want to give away their secrets, but we know that it would depend upon the particular year during the war, how well the war was going, and also which side you were on, as to whether it was a merry Christmas or a sad Christmas.

The Oakview Holiday Craft Bazaar is in its 6th year and is held the first Saturday of December, from 9am until 2pm at Oakview Recreation Center , 503 James Rd. High Point. The event is free and open to the public. We will have door prizes given away throughout the day. There will be over 20 vendors from the area displaying and selling their work.

The Roanoke Canal Museum will host Christmas on the Canal, a day of food, fun, and music for the entire family! Rockin' Reindeer is the theme this year. Live music begins at 10:00 am and at noon, children are invited to enjoy a reading and visual presentation of "Olive, the Other Reindeer" by J. Otto Seibold nad Vivian Walsh. Afterward, children will be invited to make a special ornament. Throughout the day, homemade Christmas goodies and beverages will be served free of charge.
