            <description>Hello fellas, nice place you got here!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My name is Mike and I am in the middle of my 1959 Chevy 1/2 Ton Stepside buildup, working through the last few mechanical/electrical issues before paint and body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was bitten by the old truck bug by a pic of a NAPCO '59 in a CHP mag about 12 years ago, been on the &amp;quot;hunt&amp;quot; for one since! I bought a 2WD 1/2 ton and totally gutted it, replaced EVERYTHING mechanical. Now focusing on suspension and am once again playing with the idea of 4WD - or waiting to find the right original NAPCO truck to buy - gotta have more than one, right?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyway I look forward to learning and hopefully contributing something here; I love these old trucks and want to help preserve their rich history by owning and driving one every chance I get - plus they are great to work on!  &lt;img src="http://napco4x4.org/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /&gt;&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;

Everything I have read about the upgrade did not seem to include new leaf springs yet the NAPCO trucks look tall and tough - how much lift was added over stock 2WD and how was it done?             <description>Typical upfit added 4 inch blocks in the back and on most 1/2 tons new front leaf springs were &lt;br /&gt;added that had 7 total leaves.  I think mainly to compensate for the added weight of the transfer case.&lt;br /&gt;Stock 2wd 1/2 ton had 6 leaf springs up front.  I think the 3/4 tons also went with 7.  Not sure&lt;br /&gt;on the 1 tons.  Most of the lift in front was gained by the straight front axle vs the slightly dropped&lt;br /&gt;axle of the 2wd.&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;

            <description>I just pulled mine off.  The right one is 7/8&amp;quot; 16 tpi right hand thread, and the left one is 7/8&amp;quot; 18 tpi, also right hand thread.  I ordered the one from Jim Carters.  Their description doesn't say if the threads are left or right.  I got the other one from Brian (through Rare Parts) a long time ago and it fits perfectly and appears very well made.  It's part number RP26616-1D2.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I just wonder how all the dirt got in my tie rod.  If I had realized they were hollow I would have cleaned it out and ran swabs through with POR-15.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rare Parts should still be able to get the right one (or left, probably):&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;!-- m --&gt;&lt;a class="postlink" href="http://www.rareparts.com/products/"&gt;http://www.rareparts.com/products/&lt;/a&gt;&lt;!-- m --&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I should add that the Napco parts book shows different part numbers for the '56 - '57 tie rod ends compared to the later ones, but in both cases the bigger trucks use the same part as the half tons.&lt;br /&gt;____________________&lt;br /&gt;Ed Miller

            <description>My Napco axle is a '56 or early '57.  The left tie rod end uses male 7/8&amp;quot; 18 tpi right hand threads to screw into the tie rod.  The one I bought from Jim Carter had left hand threads so I returned it.  My buddy Paul at Napa measured my old one (including the taper of the stud) and found one in his book that fits:  NAPA part number 269-2553.  The threaded part (going into the tie rod) is about an inch longer than the old one but by repeatedly forcing it in and back out, I got it to work.  I didn't want to just cut off the excess, but that would have worked too.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I notice from my parts book that the early axles don't use the same tie rod ends as the later axles but I don't know what the differences were.  My right tie rod end is from Rare Parts and I got it via Brian Russell, and it worked perfectly.&lt;br /&gt;____________________&lt;br /&gt;Ed Miller

            <description>You can get all the bearings and seals from Napa or any local bearing place, though you'll have to pull the old ones out first to get the right numbers.  If your ring and pinion gears are bad, they should be the same parts as any 3/4 ton rear differential.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What do you think is making the noise?&lt;br /&gt;____________________&lt;br /&gt;Ed Miller

            <description>the front diff has a very bad leak and after taking it for a sunday ride it developed a very horrible grinding noise. the noise only occures when i deselerate. when i got home i checked the oil in the front diff and there was none. so i can only assume, without pulling it apart, the bearings and ring and pinion are shot.&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;

            <description>Triangle springs fronts 22-196&lt;br /&gt;Traingle springs rears 22-245&lt;br /&gt;If you can not locate them, I would suggest checking your nearest leaf spring company.             <description>If you have the old one they can usually match it up from the numbers on the old one.  If not Napa, a bearing shop can.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I saw a list once of various parts like that and the common numbers for them, but I can't remember where it is.             <description>The Filling Station catalog shows a seal FS-377 listed for differential pinion seal for 1940 - 63 trucks except half ton.  On my half ton the front and rear pinion seals (and bearings, and so on) are the same.  I bet they are on yours too.  Yours are $8.50 in my print catalog.             <description>I know this doesn't really fit the Engine Shop topic, but I couldn't figure a better place to ask my question: I bought a new heater control valve but its location is never mentioned in the shop manual and I didn't have the priveledge of removing the original.             <description>Is your truck a Chevy or GMC?  If Chevy, standard or deluxe heater?  My '58 Chevy with the standard heater has the control valve in line with the heater hose.  You turn it off if you don't want hot water going to your heater core, and open it if you do.  I've never closed mine, so it's probably rusted open, but my heater sure works well.&lt;br /&gt;____________________&lt;br /&gt;Ed Miller

            <description>I saw another '58 yesterday, and his heater control valve was somewhere in the heater area in the cab.  I didn't see it.  He has a deluxe heater, where you can switch between fresh air or recirculate.  My standard one just has a fan switch for on or off.&lt;br /&gt;____________________&lt;br /&gt;Ed Miller

            <title>Trucks For Sale :: 1968 C-50 4x4 dump truck</title>

            <description>Does anybody need a winter project? This is a 1968 C-50 dump truck with a 10ft. low pro dump bed. It has a 327 4sp divorced t-case. Truck has 28k on it. The truck was built for the state of Indiana to pick up trash at the dunes state park. The super singles are the factory tires. The truck was stolen in 1970 and taken for a joy ride and ended up in Lake Mich. and blew the engine. It was sold to a friend of mine at auction and he had it until 8yrs ago when I bought it to use while digging a pond. The truck runs but it will need a new carb. The hydraulics work like new, the brakes do not work, cab it rusted pretty bad and truck has no title. However I have a different cab with a title that goes with it. Asking 1500.00 OBO, I may take cummins performance parts on trade. PM me with any questions.             <description>I'm in California, where would the truck have to be shipped from? What is the weight cap. of the C-50? When you drove it, what was top speed, gearing? Can the rear axle be modified to be a dually? Are you asking what the GVW is, it is 19500 lb. I do not know what the truck weights. I never drove it on the road but my buddy who I bought it from said it will run 60mph pulling a backhoe and trailer. I do not know what gear ratio it has. As far as the rear axle accepting duals I don't know but I would assume it would. It looks like the singles are just a custom wheel that was made for this application.&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;

            <description>For sheet metal/patch panel work they should do just fine.  Be careful not to spend a lot of time welding in one spot or you will warp the sheet metal.   You will basically be spot welding.  Move around a lot until everything is filled in.&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;

            <description>There's a gasket that goes between the felts and the knuckle; I made mine.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I never thought to ask:  is yours leaking grease or oil?  If oil, then you need to pull the axle out of the housing and replace the oil seal.
