The NYTimes app is one of the newer myTouch Slide apps to hit the Android Market. It brings a wealth of excellent and much-missed features to your myTouch 3G Slide, including the ability to the read articles offline (say on a flight). This is an official app and it has been integrated well with Android and the interface to the New York Times. Video playback and sound quality is excellent and the buffering is often non-existent even on a slow connection. You can also adjust the font-sized based on your preferences, a huge improvement to the browser-based version of the site – it results in more reading and less tapping and zooming.

The reading experience is excellent, though the text may appear a little washed-out in bright lighting such as under direct sunlight. This T-Mobile myTouch app sticks to the design patterns of the original New York Times website, with its familiar fonts, color schemes, and text placements. You can also share articles you’ve read very easily. The main interface presents a list of articles with an associated thumbnail, tapping on any one will take you straight to the content (which will include any photos in the piece). You can browse through a couple of dozen sections just like the main website. You can easily move between stories by swiping across the screen. Overall, an excellent myTouch 3G and myTouch 3G Slide app for Android.

The massively popular smart-radio music streaming service Pandora is now available on Android and the myTouch. Pandora allows you to build playlists and “smart” radio streams based on your music tastes. You can teach the service about your tastes using the thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons available on the player. The app then tries to line up more songs that have similar characteristics to the ones you likes. This myTouch app also comes with a home screen widget that lets you play with the controls without needing to keep relaunching the application. Of course, you can keep the app running in the background even as you work on other applications on your smartphone.Â

Â

The preferences pane allows you to set your preferred audio quality based on whether or not you’re on a good network. Buffering is smart and playback is stutter free even on slower WiFi channels. You can share and buy songs through the menu as well. It’s easy to create a new radio station based on a songs name, album, or artist. Note that Pandora doesn’t actually let you listen to a specific song by a specific artist whenever you want – you can only listen to similar songs in an intelligently created radio stream. This is similar to what Last.FM offers. The Pandora app on the myTouch is a high-quality smart-radio application that brings your music tastes right to your smartphone.

Spotify is a music streaming service with offline syncing for the T-Mobile myTouch and Android. With Spotify, you can stream music, manage playlists, sync with the desktop app, and play songs offline even when you don’t have a signal on your myTouch. You can play around with the app or with other apps while the music is playing live – the player controls are presented via a tabbed option that can be pulled up from the bottom menu bar. You do need a Spotify premium subscription to use this Android application. This myTouch app presents almost everything that you can access via the desktop front-end to Spotify. On the desktop app, dragging a song into the mobile folder will instantly sync the song to your myTouch.

Â

The search feature gives you full access to the catalog. Note that this is not a streaming “radio” service like Pandora – you have full access to any song that’s available on the catalog, and you can skip as many times as you want. Streaming quality is top-notch, with no stuttering or lags on 3G or Wi-Fi. The interface is simple and intuitive, and the tabbed interface for the player does well to get out of the way once a song starts playing. As expected, Spotify does have a noticeable impact on battery-life, but this is true for these services on any smartphone. There’s currently no way to automatically generate a playlist for you based on a small sample of songs – a feature available in Pandora and Last.FM. Overall, this is a very polished and comprehensive music streaming application with offline syncing rounding off one of the more feature-rich and useful myTouch apps.

UrbanKite for the myTouch and Android is an interesting new application that lets you discover cool new local hangouts and to spread the word about these places through Twitter. This myTouch app allows you to search for local restaurants, cafes, and other establishments based on category and keywords. It also mines Twitter for tweets and recommendations about specific places. This can be invaluable if you are looking for locations that have rapidly developing current events. You can also star establishments, which will act as a vote for the business – UrbanKite aggregates these votes and ranks resataurants and other establishments. A star also acts as a favorite on the application.Â

Â

You can send a tweet right from within the application, and tweets automatically include links to the right location and restaurant, which means people who aren’t using UrbanKite will also be able to act on your recommendations. UrbanKite is currently in beta and future updates look promising, including a potentially intelligent recommendation service that bubbles new locations based on what other like-minded users have as favorites. If you are a regular user of Twitter, you will probably find that this is one of the myTouch apps that slips smoothly into your existing habits without a hitch. If you’re new to Twitter or hate it with a vengeance, this may not be the app for you. But the app acts as a useful discovery tool even without requiring you to use Twitter – so it may be a worthwhile download for just about anybody.

Touchpal is an advanced soft keyboard that will significantly improve your typing speed on the myTouch. It comes with several advanced and intuitive features that are a leap above the default keyboard on your myTouch. This myTouch application offers gesture controls, predictive text, several different layout choices, and a slew of other small features that make typing on the myTouch much easier and faster. For instance, to type a capital letter, all you have to do is press a letter and swipe up. Similarly, swiping down on a key will enter the symbol or alternate character corresponding to that letter. You can switch between layouts by swiping left or right across the whole keyboard.Â

Â

This award-winning application comes with four language packs for now (you’ll need to download these separately from the main application on the Android market). The four include English, French, Chinese, and German for now with more on the way. Once you download the main application, you’ll need to install at least one language pack. If you install more than one, you can go to a “mixed” language setting that allows you to seamlessly type in both languages whenever you like. This soft keyboard has amazingly good predictive capabilities, beyond anything else available for Android phones at the moment. Needlessly to say it works perfectly with all capabilities in landscape mode. Touchpal is free for the moment on the Android Market, but is unlikely to remain so for too long.

Mobile Defense is hands down the best tracking and recovery app there is for the myTouch and Android. The service offers a number of different ways to track down a lost or stolen myTouch. It runs intermittently in the background, so that the service cannot be easily stopped in a stolen device. Once you have installed and configured this app on your myTouch, you’ll be able to login to the Mobile Defense website where you can see your phone pinpointed on a map. The app can use both the GPS radio as well as cellular triangulation to locate your device in case the GPS is turned off. The website also lets you see recent activity on the device depending on what settings you’ve enabled on the app.Â

Â

The service sends you relevant emails as events take place with your lost or stolen phone, including whether or not your myTouch is locked. Another invaluable service is a notification that tells you when the SIM in your myTouch is changed, and actually gives you full details about the new SIM – including the phone number. This is a whole another layer of information that you can use to escalate your loss or theft to the appropriate authorities. Mobile Defense also pays attention to battery life, and is not a significant drain on power at all on the myTouch. This is one of the most useful myTouch apps on the Android market today, and the developers remain very responsive to problems and issues. A must-download for all myTouch owners.

Layar is a powerful augmented-reality application for the myTouch and Android that is now available globally on the Android Market (it was previously available only in the Netherlands). This fantastic myTouch app offers a real-time overlay (“layar”) of information over your myTouch’s camera image when you launch the app. Pointing and panning your myTouch camera around will pull up information overlayed on the images seamlessly and with absolutely no stuttering or waiting for data to load. You can load different Layars, each with its own specialty. For instance, the Google Local Search layar will pull up data from Google’s local search and show detailed information on restaurants, establishments, and businesses as you point your camera at them.Â

Â

The application offers several choices of layars already: Flickr, Wikipedia, Twitter, and Google Local Search among others. Several other layars are expected to come out as the platform matures. The apps “Reality Browser” includes categories for popular and featured points-of-interest to help discover new places more easily. If you prefer, you can change back to a regular map or list view. Many layars offer the ability to call the establishment right from the application, and other layars come with the ability to share a link or interact with the location in other manners. This is one of the most amazing and promising new myTouch apps that is both functional and just plain cool to use.

Wapedia is a fast Wikipedia interface on the myTouch and Android. This myTouch App brings all the wonderful features of Wikipedia right to your fingers. It supports search, featured articles on Wikipedia, and (the best) random articles. Formatting is excellent, and both image and text content wrap perfectly into your myTouch’s screen with no jumps or awkward breaks. Since Wikipedia comes with a News category, this app can also act as an up-to-date News reader. It works perfectly with many international versions and multiple languages. Caching could be improved, since images don’t seem to load any faster even if you’ve already visited them before.Â

Â

Unfortunately, the current version does not support collapsible sections. You may find that longer articles can be a long wall of text which can mean losing track of your position relative to other sections. Navigation itself is not impacted, since most Wiki pages offer the ability to jump to a section from the top of the page with a single click. Wapedia also does smart auto-complete of article titles which can save you a significant amount of typing on the myTouch’s soft keyboard. In addition to collapsible section headers, features that you might miss right now include the ability to switch to a text-only mode (which can significantly speed up the application), and the ability to bookmark articles for later reference. Overall, this is a wonderful app for browsing Wikipedia in a fast, clean, and intuitive manner.

AK Notepad is a clean, simple, and powerful note-taking application for the T-Mobile myTouch and Android. This myTouch app offers a clean and intuitive interface for note-taking. You can customize the appearance of notes to suit your tastes. Notes can be sorted by title, and there is a search feature. Unfortunately, it is limited to searching the titles only for now. In real-life usage, this can result in pretty long titles if you like to make lots of notes and use the search feature to go through them. Lists are particularly difficult to manage without a full-text search. An excellent feature is the ability to have a note on the home screen for quick and easy access.Â

This feature-packed app comes with even more surprises under the hood: you can set a reminder on your myTouch based on your  note, and you can share notes quickly and easily via SMS and email. The interface is free-flowing and gets out of your way for most tasks. Within a few minutes of using the app, you’ll find that note-taking is completely hassle-free and you can do most operations without thinking. This app is already easily one of the best productivity apps on the Android Market at present, but adding a more powerful search and more customization options will really make this app indispensable for myTouch users.

Babbler is the better of the two major native Facebook apps available on the myTouch and Android. With its look-and-feel closely mirroring that of the parent site, this app offers all the basic features that you’ll need plus some nice extras like a home screen widget. This myTouch app offers a tab-based navigation system at the top of the application screen. You can track albums, comments, feeds, events and almost everything else that Facebook offers with a few taps on the app. Navigation is fast and user-friendly. One the rare occasion the app needs to pull in a significant amount of data, there’s a spinner that tells you that Babbler is working away – so the app doesn’t just hang and leave you wondering.Â

Â

The contrast between fonts and background colors could do with some work, since many elements appear a little washed out and can be hard to see under certain lighting conditions. At present there is no way to create new events from within the app but you can certainly view and map out existing events. Another missing feature that some might consider a must-have is Facebook chat. There’s also no real way to update your profile pic with a photo taken with your myTouch. All in all, this is a solid Facebook application on the myTouch and the rumored “official” Facebook app will need to be very feature-rich to takeover the lead form Babbler. Right now, this is the best Facebook app on the Android Market.
