When urban fringe dweller Burke goes on an assignment to trade cash for a missing child, he's drawn into a trap designed with bullets and blood. Now his beloved dog Pansy is dead and he lies in a hospital bed hovering in a netherworld of nightmares and hallucinations close to death, far from the family that loves and protects him. When the police issue a death certificate for Burke, the dark angel of the powerless goes deeper underground than ever before to find out who ordered the hit on him and avenge his faithful companion. The only trail leads through the Russian mob to the parents of the kidnapped boy. But in order to connect the dots, Burke needs the help of an ex intelligence officer, a Russian speaking Chinese girl named Gem, and childhood friend who finds patterns where others see chaos. At the end of this dark tunnel Burke discovers a world where the Russian mob, neo-nazi skin heads, and other low-lifes intersect and where the hit on Burke is a minor sideshow in a major scheme to create the ultimate sanctuary for the twisted and perverse.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter eBook by Lindsay, Jeff
Customer Review: I came to this first Dexter novel as a vet of 3 seasons of the TV show, meaning I already knew the major plot twist, and had fully formed character images in my head. While this is a worthwhile read for any fan of the show, I think this may be the first time ever that "the movie was better than the book." While some differences negligible, the exclusive first-person format of the book means almost no character development of anyone other than Dexter himself. Very little Deb, Vince, Angel, etc. And Book Dexter is far more pathological and so much less likeable than his TV counterpart (although this is probably more realistic for a sociopath). Even the major plot twist has a better and more convincing development on the show. The writing style seems very familiar after three years of hearing Dexter talk to himself, and the general tone of the book is very close to the show. As most of the book is taken up with the major plot twist, knowing this in advance very much dulls the suspense. The two series veer far apart after this first volume, so later books will be more like a parallel Dexter universe, restoring the suspense to the TV fan. All in all, I say read it.

Deja Dead eBook by Reichs, Kathy
It's June in Montreal, and Tempe, who has left a shaky marriage back home in North Carolina to take on the challenging assignment of director of forensic anthropology for the province of Quebec, looks forward to a relaxing weekend. First, though, she must stop at a newly uncovered burial site in the heart of the city. One look at the decomposed and decapitated corpse, stored neatly in plastic bags, tells her she'll spend the weekend in the crime lab. This is homicide of the worst kind. To begin to find some answers, Tempe must first identify the victim. Who is this person with reddish hair and a small bone structure? Something about the crime scene is familiar to Tempe: the stashing of the body parts, the meticulous dismemberment. One case in particular comes to mind: the murder of sixteen-year-old Chantale Trottier, who'd arrived in the morgue naked, less than a year before, and packaged in plastic garbage bags. Tempe's convinced there are parallels between the two cases, but it will take more victims to persuade her police colleagues. Knowing there is a killer on the streets who may soon find a new victim, Tempe calls upon all her forensic skills, including bone, tooth, and bitemark analysis and X-ray microfluorescence to try to prove that the cases are related and to stop the killer before he strikes again. The next victim may be closer to home - Tempe's longtime friend Gabby, her college-age daughter Katy, or Tempe herself.

Blindsighted eBook by Slaughter, Karin
Customer Review: Karin Slaughter has captured the essence of the small southern town in her first book, "Blindsighted". I was quite impressed: well developed and interesting characters, scary and intriguing plot and a really horrible bad guy. I like her style and really got hooked on the story which I finished in one day. It is one of those that is very difficult to put down. It is a bit graphic at times, but so is life. I look forward to reading the rest of her books.

Blood Hollow eBook by Krueger, William Kent
"A brilliant new installment in the prize-winning Cork O'Connor series -- from the acclaimed author of The Devil's Bed and Purgatory Ridge -- immerses readers in an eerie mystery surrounding a racially charged murder in small-town Minnesota. Winner of the Loft-McKnight Fiction Award and the Anthony Award for Best First Novel, William Kent Krueger is a wholly original talent among mystery writers, managing to fuse inspired, fluid storytelling with complex, finely textured characterizations. Now, in a briskly paced novel that outstrips even its predecessors in its ability to ratchet up the suspense, Krueger takes us back to Aurora, Minnesota, where the charismatic Cork O'Connor encounters his most baffling case to date. When the corpse of a beautiful high school student is discovered on a hillside four months after her disappearance on New Year's Eve, all evidence points to her boyfriend, local bad boy Solemn Winter Moon. Despite Solemn's self-incriminating decision to go into hiding, Cork O'Connor, Aurora's former sheriff, isn't about to hang the crime on the kid, whom O'Connor is convinced is innocent. In an uphill battle to clear Solemn's name, Cork encounters no shortage of adversity. Some he knows all too well -- small-town bigotry and bureaucracy foremost among them. What Cork isn't prepared for is the emergence of a long-held resentment hailing from his own childhood. And when Solemn reappears, claiming to have seen a vision of Jesus Christ in Blood Hollow, the mystery becomes thornier than Cork could ever have anticipated. And that's when the miracles start happening.... Praised by critics and peers alike for his bold and insightful writing, William Kent Krueger has become a master of mixing brilliant, evocative prose with stunning, nonstop suspense. Readers are sure to be riveted by his latest foray into the darkest corners of a small-town paradise and the detective who is determined to bring it all to light."
"Lt. Eve Dallas struggles with the end-and the beginning-of life, in the #1 New York Times-bestselling series set in 2060 New York City Eve Dallas has a grisly double homicide to solve when two young lovers-both employees of the same prestigious accounting firm-are brutally killed on the same night. It doesn't leave Eve a lot of leftover time to put together a baby shower for her buddy Mavis, but that's supposedly what friends are for. Now Mavis needs another favor. Tandy Willowby, one of the moms-to-be in Mavis's birthing class, didn't show up for the shower. A recent emigrant from London, Tandy has few friends in New York, and no family-and she was really looking forward to the party. And when Eve enters Tandy's apartment and finds a gift for Mavis's shower wrapped and ready on the table-and a packed bag for the hospital still on the floor next to it-tingling runs up and down her spine. Normally, such a case would be turned over to Missing Persons. But Mavis wants no one else on the job but Eve-and Eve can't say no. She'll have to track Tandy down while simultaneously unearthing the deals and double-crosses hidden in the files of some of the city's richest and most secretive citizens, in a race against this particularly vicious killer. Luckily, her multimillionaire husband Roarke's expertise comes in handy with the number crunching. But as he mines the crucial data that will break the case wide open, Eve faces an all too real danger in the world of flesh and blood.
