You know, I got some Jay Electronica stuff but I wasn't too impressed, but, at the same time, I don't think I gave it much time to sink in. Goes back to your post about so much music being available to no end.

Yeah, nothing compares to Black on Both Sides, or the Black Star album. It would be great to get some straight up hip hop though. More rhymes to rewind and go, oh shit, you hear that!

After listening to the Kid Cudi mixtape over the past few days, I think it's worth the listen but nothing to get really excited about. I was much more impressed with the first stuff I heard from Jay Electronica than this stuff. Unfortunately, since that first stuff, I haven't been thrilled about any of Jay Electronica's newer stuff (rumors that he may sign to Bad Boy may have something to do with that).

As for Kid Cudi, I still really like "I Poker Face." The sample and simple but strong drum loop get me. I also really like "The Sky Might Fall."

I can't wait for the new Mos Def. I hope he doesn't disappoint. He always does, but that's only because I have such high expectations.

Yeah, Thanos takes out everyone in the Infinity Gauntlet series. It's been years, but I think there were 5 comic books total.

Oh, and the X-Men trading cards were my favorite. That first series was drawn entirely by Jim Lee. Another fave.

And yeah, I don't know why they haven't released the TV show on DVD yet. I just did a little research on Wikipedia, and "According to TVShowsOnDVD.com, X-Men is the ninth most requested unreleased television show and the second most requested animated television show behind MTV's Daria." Maybe I'll ask @Marvel on Twitter about any plans to release the show to DVD.

I totally forgot about Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet. I think have/had an issue where Thanos imprisons Silver Surfer. Didn't a buncha guys like Wolverine and Spiderman die in the future in that series? I'll definitely have to put that on my list to read.

Wow! I don't know to say. I knew you were fan of Marvel, but I guess I underestimated the extent. Mutant Apocalypse is a CLASSIC yo! You see the video of Jeremy speedrunning it? Crazy! Speaking of Jeremy, I'm sure you agree with us when we ask, "Why the hell isn't the cartoon on DVD yet?!!!??!"

Now that you mention it, you're right. Marvel is producing a lot of the films themselves. I've noticed the database at work shifting from one of the major studios to Marvel. Had no idea that if the movie tanks Marvel loses is the rights to make more movies of that character - definitely a win-win situation, assuming someone else could come and make it profitable/cool again.

I didn't even stop to think that they would start digitizing their comic book collection. That's so cool! I would hope that would drive up the price of the original comic books but my guess is that it won't. Much like how mp3s haven't made those hard-to-find records more valuable. But, much like how the music came to more of the masses, I'm glad that people who wouldn't ever find a rare comic book will now get a chance to access it with ease.

As for where to start, I have no clue. X-Men first and foremost, then maybe Iron Man, since the second one will be coming out soon. The Infinity Gauntlet series was pretty wicked!

You took the words right out of my mouth! Was thinking of writing a similar post but just couldn't quite get down what I wanted to say.

For me, musically speaking, it's WAY too much! Every day there's some new mixtape, featured artist, sample set, hot single, etc. I've definitely cut the fat out. I deleted a bunch of shit that was taking up unnecessary space.

I, like you and Terence, don't listen to the radio. And I don't really care what's new on the airways cause 9 times of out 10, that shit doesn't grab me. I'm only checking for a select number of artists (ex. Mos Def, The Roots, Ozo) and I figure I'll hear about new ones eventually. If it's hot, I'll hear about it!

With all the downloading I was doing I noticed it was starting to take the fun out of it. The fun of listening and finding something I actually liked, hunting it down at a store, and enjoying my purchase. For example, I used to buy Dilated records just because the last single I had by them was fresh. That's what put me on to other artists, and I would branch out. It's very rewarding (and risky) to pick up something by an artist you know little to nothing about. But it's more personal. I feel involved.

I guess what I'm also trying to say is that I like to create those "recommendations" for myself. A good example would be, say you knew nothing bout hip hop. And you pick up Tha Dogg Pound's Dogg Food, and you really like it and want to find other artists like that. What do you do? Well, it's on Deathrow Records, so I would start there. I'll go back and find out what other artists were on that particular label. I find that as of lately, that's what I've been doing and I think I've found a nice balance of music that I download and purchase.

But yeah, good and meaningful recommendations is going to be the key to the future of all this stuff. I only talked about music in my post, but it applies to almost everything (books, movies, software, etc).

I totally agree about Okayplayer. When this post was brewing in my head, I was going to mention them as a source for good music recommendations, but when I got to writing, it slipped my mind.

interesting topic and something i've thought about often both in a personal sense as well as in a work context. i think what's happening now is people, at last, have the ability to "self program". before we had to watch was on TV, listen to the radio, etc. no we have netflix, pandora, tivo, hulu, etc. we get to choose what we want and when. the problem, which you mention, is how to know what you want to enjoy. enter the "tastemakers". in a world of ever-increasing options, our ability to solicit expert opinions to sift through all the shit and make recommendations is going to get way more important. okayplayer used to serve some of that purpose from a music perspective. we need more of that. from movies, to books to whatever. tapping into the conscious of similar minded people is one way. more intelligent system-generated recommendations is another. who knows what will happen, but i'm greatly interested in this as well.

You know me cuz, I feel the same way you do. Back when Luda first came out I was like, "whatever!" Most of his hits were club friendly and, therefore, hard to ignore, but I never gave any of his albums a decent listen.

Then, in 2002, the thorn in my side, Mr. Bill O'Reilly decided to take shots at Pepsi for featuring an ad with Luda, asking their Public Relations person about the morals portrayed by the foul-mouthed rapper. (Never mind that O'Reilly wrote a novel with graphic depictions of murder several years earlier, which is loosely based on his angst at former employer CBS). Pepsi later dropped the ads and O'Reilly continued, as he always does, with his hatred of hip hop.

When The Red Light District dropped, I picked it up and was surprised - the dude can flow! Too bad Release Therapy wasn't that great. I still haven't given Theater of the Mind heavy rotation but "I Do It For Hip Hop" is sweet! (I think Jay's verse is weak, I like Luda's best!)

808s & Heartbreaks has grown on me but I can't listen to the whole things from start to finish. I'm all for artists experimenting though.

Which brings me to Common's latest - It's definitely a treat listening to Common speed up his flow, keeping the beat and experimenting. I'd be lying if I said I can't wait for him to come back on some boom bap sh!t, but the album is decent.
