The state of South Australia has become famous around the world for something that is produced here – wine. This state is home to a great number of vineyards, which produce some spectacular wines, including whites, reds and blushes. However, just because wine may have put the sate of South Australia on the map, this does not mean that the production of wine is the only thing that happens in this state.

If you don’t know much about South Australia, read this list of interesting facts about the state and you will not only be informed, but you may just decided to book a trip to this lovely Australian state.

So, without further ado, here is a look at some of the interesting facts that are associated with the sate of South Australia.

In South Australia, you will experience a climate that is very similar to the climate of the Mediterranean; here, the winters are cool and damp and the summers are hot and dry, which makes for the perfect environment for growing the grapes that are turned into the wine that this region is famous for.

The Barossa Valley is the most famous wine production region in the state of South Australia and there are more than 70 wineries located in this region of the state along.

The state of South Australia produces more than half of all of the wine that the country of Australia produces. Now that is a lot of wine production.

The Clare Valley is the first region known to produce wine in South Australia. In 1851, priests planted the very first grapes in the state that would then become wine.

Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia and it offers a very laid back and relaxed atmosphere. In fact, you will find that there are a large number of restaurants and cafes within this city than there are people who live in the city. That being said, finding a place to grab a bite to eat or something to drink is never a problem in Adelaide.

While Australia may be known as the most arid country in the world, South Australia is the most arid state within Australia.

Anna Creek Station is the largest farm in the entire world. In fact, it is so large that it is estimated to be approximately the same size as the country of Belgium.

South Australia is another one of Australia’s fine states and just like all of the other sates within this country, South Australia presents a lot of interesting sites, attractions and things to do.

If South Australia is on your list of places to visit during your Australian adventure, than you are in for a real treat. There are so many things to do and see and experiences to be had that you are sure to have the time of your life in this state, no matter what your interests are. From adventures in the great outdoors to cultural experiences and pretty much everything in between, you will find something that peaks, and exceeds, your interests, in South Australia.

Explore Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy is, in my opinion, one of the most unique locations in the entire state of South Australia, if not in the entire country of Australia. This small town was put on the map because of opals, and because opal mines were a central part of life for the people who lived here, it made sense for life to be moved underground. In Cooper Pedy, you will find out what it is like to live underground, as there are many museums, shops, restaurants and even homes that are located below the surface of the earth. Exploring this town certainly makes for a pretty neat experience.

Wine Blending. South Australia is known for many things, and perhaps one of the things that it is most famous for is wine. The Grange is home to several vineyards, and Penfolds Wines happens to me one of the most recognized and regarded wineries in the region. If you are a lover of wine, than I highly recommend stopping by the Penfolds Barossa cellar door so that you can blend your very own brand of wine.

Go Hot Air Ballooning. Set sail, into the air, that is. In the Flinders Ranges region of South Australia, you can partake in an extraordinary ride; a hot air balloon ride. As you soar high above the mountains, you will be able to take in some of the most extraordinary views you will ever see. This is truly a magical experience to be had.

Stay in a Houseboat. The Murray River is quite a lovely destination in South Australia; in fact, it is so beloved that people often tend to take to staying right on the water in houseboats. If you want to experience truly unique accommodations and have a relaxing time, rent a houseboat on the beautiful Murray.

Explore Seal Bay. With a name like Seal Bay, you can imagine the type of animals that you will find in this location. As you wander along the boardwalk here, you will be able to spot droves of seals as they lie on the beach and soak up the sun.

Every state in Australia certainly has its own unique opportunities and there are several adventures to be had. The state of South Australia certainly is no stranger to unbelievable adventure. Between the coastlines, the Outback, the mountains and the forests, there are so many different adventures to be had in this state. If you are looking to have a truly unforgettable experience while you are visiting South Australia, than you may want to consider fitting some of these adventures in on your list of things to do.

Gawler Ranges Wilderness Safaris. You simply won’t believe the adventure that awaits you when you head out on a Gawler Ranges Wilderness Safari. On one of these safaris, you will be lead into the Gawler Ranges, Lake Gairdner, the west coast of Australia and many other unbelievable locations on a 4 wheel drive vehicle tour. Experienced guides will lead you to each of these destinations, as well as offer you some insightful information and allow you to do some exploration of your own. On this adventure, you will be able to see salt lakes, volcanic rock beds, go swimming with sea lions, see kangaroos hopping about their natural habitat and much, much more.

Shark Cave Diving. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be surrounded by a school of sharks? Well, when you go shark cave diving off of the Eyre Peninsula, you will be able to actually experience this rush. In this adventure, you will be lowered into shark infested waters in a shark cage and you will be able to watch as these creatures swim around you. It truly is a humbling experience.

Explore Kangaroo Island. Kangaroo Island is so named for the creatures that inhabit the land; kangaroos. While exploring this island, not only will you get a chance to be up close and personal with kangaroos, but you will also get to see the beauty that lies beyond the kangaroos, including beaches and bushland.

Murray River Cruise. Set sail along the Murray River and take in the beautiful sites that surround this river. From your vessel, you will be able to see gorges, cliffs and winding coasts.

One of the first things that comes to mind when one thinks of the state of South Australia is the beautiful coastline. Being that this state offers a great expanse of coastline, it is no wonder that the shore is one of the first things that come to mind. However, there are other natural wonders that exist in South Australia, aside from the beautiful coast. If you travel inland in South Australia, you will find yourself in the rugged Outback. The Outback in South Australia features some simply beautiful features, but my absolute favorite is the breathtakingly beautiful Flinders Ranges.

Rising up out of the desert landscape is an impressive collection of mountain peaks. These mountains are a brilliant terracotta color, which only add to their beauty. When exploring the Flinders Ranges, you should begin your experience in the Wilpena Pound Visitor Information Centre. Here, you can gather a lot of information about the area, which will help to prepare you for your excursion.

Once you head out of the information center, you will be able to start exploring the amazing landscape and features that await you. These mountains are over 500 million years old, and when you find yourself amongst them, you feel as if you have been brought back in time. These mountains have played an important part in the history of Australia. The Aboriginal tribes that have inhabited this landscape for centuries have long lived among the Flinders. In fact, you can still see displays of native rock art throughout the mountain range. When the Europeans first discovered Australia and began to explore it, they also explore the Flinders Ranges, and evidence of this exploration can be seen in the ruins of the early settlements.

While hiking through the Flinders Ranges, you can take in the spectacular landscapes and views, as well as the ancient works of art and ruins that lie amongst them. However, hiking isn’t the only thing that you can do here. Cycling, 4 wheel drive tours and rock climbing are other recreational activities that you can partake in here, which will enable you to experience the landscape in a unique way.

If you really want to submerse yourself in the beauty that the Flinders Ranges provides, than consider camping out here. There are many campsites that can accommodate you during your exploration.

The Flinders Ranges are one of the most beautiful natural features of the state of South Australia. If you plan on visiting this state, I highly recommend exploring this ancient landscape.

With more than 3,800 kilometres of coastline, it’s hard for the coasts of this state not to be noticed. If you are in need of a little rest and relaxation and you just need to get away from it all, consider planning a coastal holiday in South Australia. Between the beautiful climate and the breathtaking scenery, you are sure to have an experience that will allow you to brush off your stress, take a deep breath and feel like a brand new person.

So, have I got your ears perked up yet? Are you interested in planning a holiday in South Australia? If so, you may be looking for a bit more information about the area and about what you can do on holiday here. Well, keep on reading, because you are about to be delighted by what you find out.

The Landscape. As you can imagine, the combination of crystal blue waters and sun kissed soft sand beaches makes for a breathtaking backdrop. No matter what area you travel to along the coast of South Australia, you are sure to be taken back by the beauty. Not only will you find beautiful beaches here, but you will also find cliffs that tower over the ocean, sheltered little inlets and just lovely vistas. The beauty of the landscapes of this region of South Australia is something that can’t be denied.

Destinations. I have always found that one of my most favorite ways to have an adventure is to have no plan at all and just see where the wind ends up taking me. However, if you really do want to have a destination in mind when you are traveling along the coast of South Australia, than consider stopping in at the city of Adelaide, explore the Eyre Peninsula or view the amazing wildlife on Kangaroo Island.

Things to do. Of course, if you are traveling to a coastal region, it goes without saying that soaking up the sun and surf are top on the list of things to do. However, when you are traveling to the coastal regions of South Australia, there is so much to do. You can go swimming with the dolphins, cage dive with Great White Sharks, surf some stellar waves or sample the food and wine that this region has become famous for.

From kangaroos to wallabies, this country is home to a very diverse collection of animals; many of which can only be seen inside zoos in the rest of the world. While you may be familiar with many of the animals that are native to Australia, you may not be aware that this country is also home to Giant Pandas. Say what? But Giant Pandas are native to Asia! – Is that what you are thinking? If so, then yes, you are correct. However, the Adelaide Zoo is home to two very fuzzy, very friendly and very cute Giant Pandas.

Wang Wang and Funi (these are the sweet names that have been given to these sweet animals) are the only two Giant Pandas who reside in the southern hemisphere and their homes are in the state of South Australia in the Adelaide Zoo. This dynamic duo came to the zoo back in 2009, after a huge earthquake destroyed their home in their native China. These pandas have found themselves a very nice and comfortable home at the zoo and they have become the top attraction – and for good reason; you see, it’s not every day that you find Giant Pandas in the southern hemisphere, that and these animals are just so cute and hard to resist.

If you are animal lover, you need not be concerned about the space these Pandas have. The Adelaide Zoo has build them a very special home that is as large as two home blocks, so there is tons of space for them to spread out. Their enclosure boasts trees, bamboo, rocks and water features, and Wang Wang and Funi have certainly made themselves quite comfortable in this space.

If you are planning on visiting the Adelaide Zoo to see the Giant Pandas, here is some information that may help make your experience seeing these animals a bit more enjoyable (not that simply viewing them without this information won’t be enjoyable.) Funi is known to be the more playful panda and typically rolls about is very active, while Wang Wang is known to be a bit of a lazy bones and spends a great deal of time lying about in the shaded areas of their enclosure.

Be aware that if you do want to visit these animals that they are a very popular attraction and there are typically long queues to see them. In order to ensure you do get a chance to see them, arrange for a time to view them before you arrive at the zoo.

The state of South Australia is made up of a variety of beautiful regions – one that is as beautiful as the next – and of all of these different regions, there is one in particular, that I think you should visit if you are traveling to this state; and that is the Clare Valley.

The Clare Valley is one of those magnificent places that takes you back in time to the days of old. This region, which was named after Ireland’s County Clare, was settled in the 1840s and it boasts an array of heritage trails and towns, as well as museums, art galleries and wineries. A visit here will have you not only feeling as if you have been transported back in time to when the region was first settled, but it will also provide you with a sense of peacefulness and sheer joy.

As you walk along the streets that wind through the different towns of the Clare Valley, you will really gain a sense of what life was like in this region over 100 years ago; and that’s because not much has changed since. The beauty and simplicity of that time period has been preserved, allowing modern society to gain an appreciation for what it was like to live in times when technology didn’t rule everyday life.

Travers the scenic roads throughout the Clare Valley and take in the beautiful landscapes that pass by your window. While you travel, make sure to stop at one of the more than vineyards that dot the region. There are more than 40 cellar doors throughout the Clare Valley, each one offering its own unique and tasteful vintages. Whether you like red, white or blush, you will find the type of wine that you enjoy in this part of South Australia.

While you roam about the Clare Valley, I would also highly suggest that you pay a visit to one of the many museums or art galleries that can be found throughout the region. In these museums and galleries, you will find works of art from famous painters and sculptures, as well as historic displays that represent the bygone days of the Clare Valley’s settling; which only adds to the charm of this already charming region.

South Australia’s Clare Valley is among one of the most beautiful, tranquil, pristine and peaceful regions of this state, if not of the entire country. A trip to this region is highly recommended.
