Extra Money in the Web

Here's how I made extra money using my digital camera and computer! I wrote about this money making scheme before. My entry was published in the June 2009 issue of Mabuhay Magazine, the in-flight magazine of Philippine Airlines. (AKA Mom and Dad)

IT’S SOMETHING that happens to most of us. One moment you’re practically banned from meeting the opposite sex, the next you’re being pushed and shoved toward every eligible partner in sight. There isn’t much you can do about it, really. Parents wouldn’t be parents if they weren’t capable of inflicting a certain amount of torture on their kids. But it always helps to share stories and find comfort in the fact that we are not alone in our suffering.

Four years ago, right before I went to college, my dad sat me down and gave me a serious, awkward talk about how it was best for me not to get a boyfriend just yet. Barely a month into my freshman year, however, we had this conversation:

Exhibit A

“What about that classmate of yours? Bea? She’s pretty!” Dad said, elbowing my brother, Derek.
“Dad, you’re so sexist!” I fired from the backseat of our car. “You keep your eye out for Derek, but me, just because I’m a girl you think I should have nothing to do with the opposite sex.”
“That’s not true!” Dad defended himself. “I just haven’t seen anyone who’d be good for you. Dan is too scrawny, Ben is too dark, and Brian, well, he’s OK, but you don’t really look good together.”
I was dumbfounded. “You’ve been checking out my friends?”

Exhibit B

“So is he courting you?” Mom was nosing around my ‘love life’ again.
“What?! No!”
“Do you like him, then?”
“Nooooooooo!!!!”
“Sige na. You can tell us. We’re open!”

Exhibit C

“So how was your date?” Dad interrogated as he fetched me from a night out with my org mates.
“Huh? It wasn’t a date. We weren’t the only ones there. We were with friends. Besides, we don’t like each other, OK?”
“Oh, I was just wondering why you had this glow about you,” Dad smiled, pleased with his own teasing.
“I do not have a glow about me,” I retorted as dryly as I could.
“There it is, o! I see it!” he literally pointed at my face.
“Hope for their offspring makes parents delusional,” I said, annoyed.
“If you’re happy, I’m happy.” Dad quipped, undaunted.
And after a few seconds, he couldn’t resist adding, “So when do I meet him?”

Exhibit D

It was Christmas season and I had just gotten back from caroling with one of my student organizations.
Dad looked at the clock. “It’s late already. How did you get home?”
“Jake dropped me off,” I answered matter-of-factly.
At this Mom and Dad broke into wide, meaningful grins; first at each other and then at me. “Oooh! Who’s Jake?” they asked almost simultaneously.
“O, ayan na naman kayo ah! Ang bait-bait ng tao, pinagsu-suspetsyahan n’yo! [There you go again! He was just being nice and here you’re turning him into one of your usual suspects.]”
“What? We were just asking who he is. We just want to know who your friends are, that’s all,” they feigned innocence.

Exhibit E

We were at my uncle’s wedding. It was a very small and simple gathering – not the kind where you’d expect to meet any prospects. Then this tall, dark and decent-looking guy showed up. Okay, so I did check him out but concluded pretty early that he wasn’t my type. So I was contentedly sitting by myself when all of a sudden Dad’s voice boomed from a short distance. “Cate! Cate! Come here, I’ll introduce you!”

Sure enough, he was standing next to the tall, dark, decent-looking guy, enthusiastically conversing with him and his mother. I stood up and shook his hand, just to be polite. His mother said he was currently taking his master’s in Electrical Engineering at the University of the Philippines. Poor guy. It would have been better for his mother not to have said such things. Dad is attracted to such credentials like a dog is to a big, juicy piece of meat.

Come reception time, I spied Dad talking to the guy one-on-one, even picking out a small table just for the two of them. Poor, poor guy.

And, of course, when we got home, Dad wouldn’t let me hear the end of it. “He seems like a great guy! He’s nice, smart, and he’s a Christian! It would be good for you to get to know him better.”

My protests about how he wasn’t my type were in vain, falling on deaf ears.

And there are so many more examples that would take me infinity to enumerate. The funniest I’ve heard so far was how a nerdy guy friend of mine was “required to go out with a girl” by his dad.

Makes me wonder which is worse: your parents telling you that you are to remain single until further notice, or the day they decide that it’s about time they put you on the market. I also don’t tell them whenever I like someone because I think they’re crazy enough as it is. Nevertheless, I think they can still tell.

I guess there’s no choice but for me, and others like me (I’m sure I’m not the only one being sold off), to bear with all the madness and to try my best to protect my male friends from unnecessary parental interrogation/checking out, and the fact that my parents think they all have crushes on me. I just comfort myself with the knowledge that it’s normal for mom and dad to be overly confident and slightly delusional about their offspring. •

I truly can relate. However, I think this girl has awesome parents but she doesn't know it yet. When she finally meets that special someone, I'm sure she'll be more than glad to share that person with her parents. I do understand that she may want to keep her love life private for now.

Sometimes I wish my parents were more sociable and that we have more family friends.

A Rare Moment with Papa

Papa caught wearing shorts! I think it was ages ago when I last saw him in one. This time he was forced to wear one after having a heart attack and waiting for his Angioplasty.

And it didn't last that long. After his operation, he went back to wearing his ever reliable slacks again. Notice that even his shorts are made out of the same material as his slacks. hehehe (^o^)/

He will be turning 70 (normal age / non-chinese age) this year.

Sometimes I wonder what motivates the man to live - now when people even in their 20's and 30's couldn't think of one.

History in the Making?

Today, presidential candidate Mar Roxas announced his support for Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III for president in the May 2010 elections! Could this be just for shows or is this history in the making?

Undoubtedly, Noynoy is the only potential candidate who can unite most of the opposition. Other presidential and vice-presidential aspirants have already expressed their support for Noynoy if indeed he decides to run for the presidency. That's the catch, he hasn't decided yet!

Personally, his indecision is quite a turn off. Now that there's a new face in the line up, the next survey results would really be very interesting. Imagine if Noynoy would get a rating even lower than that of Mar. What next?

Another point to consider is what Senator Kiko Pangilinan is talking about. If indeed Noynoy is successful in uniting the opposition behind him, I hope he does so without incurring indebtedness to all these power-hungry politicians. If he does it the traditional way then if ever he does become the next president, the first couple of years would only be spent repaying all these debts. How then can we have CHANGE.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens in the months to come.

The Federers!

The drought is over! I'm back (mind, body, and spirit!)

For the past month, I haven't seen any tennis action or heard any tennis news! I can't believe it took me a month to find out that Mirka Federer already gave birth to twins! This blog welcomes Charlene Riva Federer and Myla Rose Federer to this world! Read on to see the picture of the Federers. ^^

Roger Federer posted this photo in his Facebook. It came with the following note:

As promised, here is a family picture that my dad took. He thinks he's becoming a professional photographer.
It was very funny as both girls had the hiccups while we were trying to take a decent picture. The girls and mom are doing great. Thanks for all your warm wishes.

On other tennis news, the last grand slam of the year is finally here! Catch the US Open Tennis Championships 2009 at the Balls Channel. I just saw Kim Clijsters advance to the 2nd round with a convincing 6-1 6-1 victory! Go Kim!

Wakeboarding in Davao! Yoohoo!

Finally! Wakeboarding is here in Davao! The Deca Wakeboard Park will open this coming August 28, 2009! Who wants to go with me?! (^o^)/ Read on to know more.

I love the Sun! And I love the Water! This is a perfect new sport for me to try. As a kid, I always wanted to try skateboarding but it was never a big thing here in the Philippines. And it can be quite scary falling on hard concrete. This time I can try it on water! I'm excited. Anything to break the monotony of life here in Davao! I hope I can find a regular group to go with.

The Deca Wakeboard Park here in Davao is said to be the largest in Southeast Asia with a wakeboarding lake of around 7 hectares! Wow! And aside from wakeboarding, there will also be WIFI, Restaurants, Sports Shop, and a Massage Center!

According to one site, here are the rates for wakeboarding:

P 300 - 1 hour

P 700 - Half day

P 1000 - Whole day

Myocardial Infarction

A healthy heart with all three coronary arteries working fine. For most, I think there are only 2 main arteries. This heart must belong to someone special.

Myocardial Infarction (MI), otherwise commonly known as a heart attack, is caused by plaque build up in the arteries of the heart. The plaque blocks blood flow to the rest of the heart causing all sorts of problems.

Angioplasty and stenting is a process that tries to dislodge the plaque build up and permanently place a stent to the affected area to prevent the same area from narrowing again. There by increasing blood flow to other parts of the heart again.

Know more by watching this video. The Angioplasty procedure undoubtedly has been brought to the limelight when Eraserheads lead vocalist Ely Buendia underwent the procedure thrice in recent years (2007 and 2008).

Time has a funny way of passing by.

Although not deprived of any childhood pleasures, one cannot help but think that one was Old when he was suppose to be Young.

Displined. Responsible. Serious.

Indeed, life was taken seriously just like how the old would want it to be.

And indeed life happened as it was expected to be. One by one money, power, fame, wisdom, and stability came. And yet both mind and body now yearns to be Young.

Adventurous. Witty. Carefree.

Mind and body very much willing but time and the environment has changed. Try as you may, now one knows better. Time only allows one to be young once.

I laugh and laugh as time passes by in a very funny way.

Office Zoo

My current workplace can definitely be like a zoo sometimes. In our busiest days, a lot of people can be seen walking in and out, strolling past my station every now and then. Not to mention the occasional shouts from one end to the other.

But this post is totally not about that. What I meant by the title was literally a zoo in our office. An animal zoo that is. I want to share it with you guys. hahaha (^o^)/ The collection's around halfway complete. There are a total of 12 chinese zodiac signs. Most of it were bought during new years. Some were given by friends. Money in Blogging + Western Union

After earning my first $100 dollars through blogging, it took Google a month to confirm it but thanks to Western Union's Quick Cash option, I was able to get the money right away! It only took 5 minutes of my time to sign up the form and receive my first paycheck from Google. Before Western Union was made available, other bloggers said that it took weeks before the money was transferred in their bank accounts. Thank God for Western Union! It you are receiving your paycheck from Google soon, make sure to choose Western Union as your payment option.

As for making money through blogging, my monthly average has doubled! Yehey! From $10 a month, now I average at $20 a month! Very encouraging for me to continue blogging and earning from it. I'm sharing this so that you will be encouraged as well.

After receiving their first $100 paycheck, other bloggers have averaged $30 a month! So mine is not yet up to par but it's getting there. Hopefully I would be able to blog about this again in a couple of months time. (^o^)/ Happy earning through blogging to everyone!

Yes, confidence is all that it takes! It is usually the ones who initiate, speak out their minds, take risks, and let it all out that are successful in life. It doesn't matter whether they are right or wrong, so long as their confidence lead them to action. Act with confidence and everything will more likely fall into place.

Even my Economics professor agrees. He said that what we're really paying for in our MBA education is how to acquire confidence. The confidence to speak out, argue, defend, and implement our proposals. Do you agree?

With regards to the video, I have to say that Federer looked a bit awkward. hehehe (^o^)/ Derek and Tiger looked more natural. Although I don't follow baseball and haven't seen Derek Jeter in action, I saw an interview of him once and I have to say that all three of them possess a certain quality that I admire. And that is humility.

For me, Confidence and Success without Humility is "never mind".

Iberian Chicken (Pollo Iberico) Recipe

My sister found this Iberian Chicken recipe online (heart 2 heart) and asked me to try it. The picture looks perfect but in reality, I made it too salty for my parent's taste! hehehe (^o^)/ Nevertheless, it was a big hit during dinner time. (Big hit equates to having only the bones and some of the potatoes left after dinner!) Why don't you try it this weekend. Just time in for Father's day.

Here's the Iberian Chicken recipe:
(I changed the original recipe a bit.)

IBERIAN CHICKEN

1 pc. whole chicken (1.0 ~ 1.5 kilo) clean very well and pat dry

2 tbsp. whole fresh peppercorn, ground

2 heads garlic, peeled and pounded

1 Tbspn rock salt

8 to 10 pcs. Calamansi or the juice of 1/2 lemon

6 pcs. lemon grass, white parts only, pounded

1 pc. chicken cube dissolved in 1 cup boiled water or

1 Tbspn Chicken Powder dissolved in 1 cup water

3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

3 to 4 pcs. potatoes, peeled and half if needed

1.) Rub the chicken all over with the ROCK SALT and PEPPER.

Remember that you can always add salt later on. If you don't want

it too salty, don't rub that much at this point. The original recipe

used 2 tablespoon rock salt. I'm changing this to 1 tablespoon.

2.) Rub with calamansi juice, making sure to rub the inside cavity.

Or you can use the juice of half a lemon. If you're using lemon, use

        the lemon zest as well. Using lemon will produce a more fragrant
        dish. I don't think they have calamansi in Spain as well.
        hehehe (^o^)/ Go easy on the lemon as well. Too much can make
        the sauce very sour.

3.) Insert the lemongrass into the cavity, together with some garlic.

   4.) Pour the chicken cube/hot water mixture and olive oil
         on the chicken. You can substitute 1 Tablespoon of
         Chicken Powder for the chicken cube. Marinate overnight in
         an oven-proof tray. Invert chicken midway.

5.) Preheat oven to 350F (180 C). Put peeled potatoes in the baking
tray, as well as the rest of the garlic. Bake.

   6.) Remember to baste chicken with the sauce marinade every 5
         minutes for 30 minutes or until chicken is golden brown. Taste
         the sauce and add salt and pepper as necessary. Cover with
         aluminum foil and bake for 2 hours until tender. Remove excess
         oil before serving.

Newest Member of the Family

We have a new member in the family! He helps us in our store and he keeps me company when I'm bored. I've even made a special toy for him made out of strings and toilet paper cartons. I play with him during lunch time when I get really sleepy and he gets really cranky and bored. A perfect symbiotic relationship hahaha (^o^)/. Here he is tugging at my pants urging me on to play.

Our new pet kitten! A stray cat who has found refuge in our store. A lucky moment of stillness, just long enough for my new Sony Ericsson T700 to capture the moment. I actually took this photo upside down and only inverted it using Picasa.

Ever since he arrived, our borders from last year have all gone away. They must be really scared of him. Well, given the choice between tickling but "malambing" sensations and tickling but scary biting sensations in our feet, we would definitely rather go for the former. So you'll understand what I mean better, check out this picture of our borders from last year. Here's one of them caught in the act, taking a sip, from Papa's lucky frog water holder which is used during counting bills. (We were actually amused by some of their antics hehehe (^o^)/)

This was taken by my old toy, a Nokia N95, which I sold for a very cheap price after only two years of usage. Anyway, it was just the free phone from Smart and in the coming months I'll be getting a new one again. I think I'll go for Sony Ericsson this time, I just love my Sony Ericsson. ^^

Long Live the Fearless Man

Before I forget, check out this video "Long Live the Fearless Man" and vote! It's the lone Filipino finalist in the Democracy Video Challenge in YouTube. I heard about this first at Mornings@ANC. That's my routine now. I watch the program every morning and follow news about the Philippine stock market. I've followed PLDT's shares rise from 1880 pesos a share to 2,300 pesos in just a couple of months! Too bad I sold my shares too early but still, I managed to earn a lot. (^o^)/ I think I'm gonna try stock trading for a living. It's quite fun.

Moments of Intoxication

Tonight the sky was clear and blue. I saw the stars exactly like I want them to be. Everytime, I see sky like that, it takes me back to the time I went camping by the beach in Hokkaido (Japan). I have House Friendship to thank for that lifetime memory. It was a cool autumn night by the beach. After eating Genghis Khan, mutton version of a yakiniku, we enjoyed the clear blue sky and the thousand of constellations visible that night.

It is moments of intoxication that life appears so simple and everything just falls into place like how it's meant to be. It is moments like this that reminds me that life is suppose to be simple. It is enjoying the simplicity of life that makes one happy. Ha! Bo Sanchez eat your heart out. ^^ Love is not the key to happiness, it is simplicity. And I am proud to say that I see that simplicity everyday with my dad.

I just came from a fundraiser event organized by a friend for a friend. Have you ever done one for a friend before? I am proud to say that I have. It was back when I was still working in Japan and a friend badly needed money to support his mother's dialysis treatments. My friend was a former colleague in the company I worked for. He was unfornately cut after a year. I decided to ask our japanese colleagues for donations. After all, 5,000 pesos in Japan is just worth one night of fun over gourmet food and drinks. With the help of other Filipino colleagues, we were able to raise around 90,000 pesos across Japan for our friend's mom.

I felt proud for what I've accomplished for my friend but felt dirty as well. Accomplishing such a feat somehow felt like it did more good for my ego than for my friend. I'm sure you get what I mean. Doing something good somehow does more good for our egos than for those we are trying to help.

Regardless, I salute my friend who organized tonight's fundraiser for stepping up and dedicating her time to help another friend. I realized that consitency / being consistent will erase all doubts. Even though I barely know the beneficiary, we've shared wonderful moments together and I truly love her personality. I hope she gets better and recovers soon.

In the meantime, I am happy and amazed for a friend who saw the fish flying and the sky in the pond. Check out his poem here.

To cap the night, I saw Jamie Oliver challenge one of the Iron Chefs on TV! A rare moment I would say, considering that both chefs competing are well respected in the culinary world.

Ahhh! My ears are still numb and deafened from the sounds in the bar. All along I thought my tolerance for noise was very high. It seems like age has caught up on me and my senses are not as tough as they used to be.

What is a Computer Software?

Ever since I took up Computer Engineering in college, it always was a bit difficult to explain to my parents what exactly it was that I was learning and doing in school. The situation did not change when I became a professional and worked as a software programmer. Even now, I still don't think they're able to fully comprehend what a software is. The problem was not only about them being technically challenged but also about me not being able to explain it to them in simple terms. How I wish I saw this video from Common Craft before to help me out.

French Open 2009 Winners (Roger Federer | Svetlana Kuznetsova)

As I had foreseen it, Roger Federer dropped on his knees and shed tears of joy as Robin Soderling's return fails to cross the net giving him the French Open 2009 Championships. He joins an elite group of players (Don Budge, Fred Perry, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, and Andre Agassi) to be among the few who have won all four grand slam tournaments!

Meanwhile, Svetlana Kuznetsova took her time touring Paris and enjoying her time as the new French Open winner.

A wife like Steffi Graf

The Agassi's are at The French Open! My bet, Dinara Safina, lost to Svetlana Kuznetzova. I hope the same thing doesn't happen tomorrow.

Not only did Andre and Steffi play an exhibition match but Steffi came out during the trophy presentation after the Women's finals.

Doesn't she look great?!

I want a wife like Steffi Graf! (I'm in Love. hehehe ^^)

New Champions at Roland Garros (French Open 2009)

Regardless of what happens today and tomorrow at the French Open Finals, new French Open Champions will be crowned! All four remaining semifinalists have never won the French Open title.

On Saturday, the Women's French Open Finals will feature the current No. 1 seed Dinara Safina against a more veteran player also from Russia, Svetlana Kuznetzova.

On Sunday, the Men's French Open Finals will feature Roger Federer vs. Robin Soderling, the man who ended Rafael Nadal's quest for a 5th straight French Open crown.

My French Open 2009 Finals bets were a bit off. Nevertheless, Roger Federer is still alive! Regardless of whom he faces in the finals he will surely win this time around! *so excited for him*
