In my search for engaging and motivating my students, I have found the website www.voki.com. Some people may not agree with the use of this tool with students, but the fact is that, if something works, then it is right. Instead of asking my students to write an ordinary composition describing their bedrooms so they can practice "There be" and the prepositions of place, I thought it could be different to do it in a different way. So I asked them to register in this site and create an avatar. Then they had to write ther description of their room in the text box that comes with the avatar. The fun of it is that they can make the avatar speak their written words so they not only write but also listen. Here are some examples of their work.

I am teaching a very disruptive group of 12 year-old students. I have tried many ways of keeping their attention and today I have found one, the comic. I have taken them to the computer room and I have shown them a site where they can create their own comic in English and send it to me. It was really fun for them, and also for me when I could see their faces laughing and smiling when working. For this activity I have used the following site www.dvolver.com, but I am also posting here a presentation that will give you ideas on how yo use the comics in your class.

As a teacher of English as a Second Language I want to thank all of you that, with your work, make cinema and television in English closer to those that are learning the language: subtitles maker. Thanks to you all I can encourage my students to start watching films and series in the original language. Spain is a country where we still add Spanish voices to the original dialogues. That makes people more difficult to get familiar to the original soundtrack. Our education authorities come with different ideas, all of them in the search of getting the right way for Spanish students to learn English more efficiently. None of them are proving to be right. We start the learning of language at 5. The fact is that my 12 years old don't know much English. It is not about creating new education laws, it is about changing the reality of how foreign languages are introduced in our country. And lets face it, television is the most powerful tool. We already know that in countries where they use original languages on television, children get familiar with foreign languages the same way they get familiar with their own. That is why, for example, in Holland, for children to be able to speak in English is quite normal. So, now, for us teachers of English in Spain, it is a hard task to encourage our students to watch films in English. And this is the reason why we have to thank subtitles makers their task. They have become a really good help to us. Thanks again.

Concurso europeo de inglés

The Big Challenge es un juego-concurso europeo de inglés destinado a alumnos de enseñanza secundaria. Los profesores de inglés pueden utilizar esta herramienta como estrategia pedagógica de aprendizaje del idioma de forma lúdica, fomentando la motivación e interés de los alumnos por practicar a diario y mejorar paulatinamente su nivel.

En mayo de 1999, por iniciativa de un grupo de profesores, se organizó por primera vez en Francia un gran juego-concurso de inglés: THE BIG CHALLENGE. Tras varias ediciones que han tenido cada vez más éxito, The Big Challenge se ha convertido en una auténtica institución. Hace cinco años, se dio un paso adelante al tomar la decisión de proponer progresivamente la participación de otros países europeos no anglófonos.

En la última edición del concurso del pasado 7 de mayo, más de 32.000 alumnos de la ESO han tomado parte en toda España, mientras que la cifra de participantes ascendía a unos 600.000 alumnos en Europa.

Cada alumno recibe un diploma y una revista de inglés por su mera participación. Los mejores reciben otros regalos, o incluso trofeos, en función de su clasificación obtenida por centro, por comunidad autónoma y a escala nacional. Entre los premios hay iPods, diccionarios, guías de viaje... El concurso está patrocinado por Larousse, The University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, Anaya Touring Club, Grupo Océano, Bayard Revistas y Franklin Electronic Publishers.

En la página Web www.thebigchallenge.com/es los profesores pueden crear e imprimir cuestionarios específicos para que los alumnos practiquen a lo largo del curso. Los alumnos tienen a su disposición un test de entrenamiento para practicar los distintos aspectos del idioma de forma lúdica y divertida.

I'm starting with a new tutorial for people that are starting to use powerpoint presentations and want to make their own ones. This tutorial is been writen by Geetesh Bajaj. I'm just introducing it to teachers.

In the simplest sense, animation is something that makes slide objects move on a slide. And slide objects can be anything on a slide, these include text, pictures, charts, SmartArt graphics, shapes, even movie clips.

In this series of learning tutorials, I'll show you how you can add animation -- and then remove, change, reorder, and sequence animation. You'll learn more about the types of animation, and animation speed too.

But first let's consider if we really need to add animation at all to any slide object. Animation is something that can never be ignored -- by the presenter or the audience -- and depending upon what type of animation you added to a particular object, you might have added a perfect emphasis to an important component on your slide -- or you may have highlighted an unimportant part of your presentation, and distracted your audience!

As you can see animation is a very powerful tool in the PowerPoint scheme of things, and a little planning and thought before adding any sort of animation is paramount.

So how do you effectively plan animation? That's simple -- if you follow these guidelines:

If you believe animation will enhance and add value to a slide, consider adding it -- otherwise just forget the idea.
Once you have found a slide object that can benefit from animation, spend some time considering what type of animation will work best -- look closely at the slide, the subject, the audience, and the visual periphery around the slide object -- just observing these will give you a better idea of what can work best.
Look carefully at animations that others have created in their PowerPoint presentations -- when you get some free time, try to replicate them. If possible, request the original PowerPoint file and deconstruct the animation.
Keep your eyes open -- animation is all around you: in movies, the weather report on TV, in advertisements, the web, Flash movies -- you'll find so much being shown on LCDs in airports, conference centers, even railway stations. Look at these styles, and try to recreate them in PowerPoint.
Show animations you have created to friends and colleagues -- a little time spent in discussing these issues with like-minded folks can bring in so much inspiration!
