Instead of sticking the yellow sticky pads all over your monitor and messing up your workstation, the Redmond Company understands your inconveniences and has incorporated the Sticky note feature in Windows 7 (and also in Vista). With Sticky Notes app in Windows 7 (open via All Programs -> Accessories -> Sticky Notes), users can freely write to-do list or jot down important numbers for later reference. Windows 7 users can either type in their note or use a table pen to start jotting essential notes. Even though the feature is cool and useful especially for absent minded people, improvements can still be made particularly on the default fonts. Since it is meant for quick jotting of important messages, Win 7 has set Segoe Print as the font style and 12 as the font size respectively. Users are allowed to change the background colour, but there is no option in the app itself to change the font size and font format. The rather traditional default Segoe Print font style and the font size might not be favourable to everybody, especially for younger users.

Since Sticky Notes is not a word processor which has many options for text editing, users who do not like the default font format and size cannot change the setting easily. Having said that, users can refer to the keyboard shortcut keys below if they want to make some changes:

Bold Text: Ctrl+B
Underlined Text: Ctrl+U
Strikethrough: Ctrl+T
Bulleted List: Ctrl+Shift+L (press the same keys again to switch to a numbered list)
Increased Text Size: Ctrl+Shift+> or Press Ctrl + scroll up the middle mouse wheel
Decreased Text Size: Ctrl+Shift+< or Press Ctrl + scroll down the middle mouse wheel

In the event users do not like Segoe Print, users can type their short notes and select the preferred fonts from some word processor apps such as Microsoft Word and paste to Sticky Notes accordingly. If handwriting reveals a lot about a person, the font type may be significant to the message writer.

MIT Sheds New Light on the Blind with Electronic Eye Implant

Vision is one of the most valuable assets of human beings. The loss of vision robs a person of color, beauty, and independence. For the visually impaired, the opportunity to regain part of their vision offers tremendous hope to live life more fully. While engineered eyes remain a distant dream, electronic retinal implants can illuminate some hope on the visually impaired. MIT has come up with a new prototype to help the visually impaired see better.

The prototype consists of a flexible substrate, power and data input coils, an electrode array, and a stimulator microchip. Users are required to wear special glasses fitted with a small camera that transmits images to a titanium-encased chip on the eyeball. The chip will fire an electrode array under the retina which will stimulate the optic nerve. The glasses help to power the coils surrounding the eyeball.

The electronic eye implant is designed for those diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa or age-related macular degeneration, the two leading causes of blindness. While not being able yet to reinstate full sight, the new technology restores partial sight to enable the affected individuals to lead a more independent life such as negotiating a room by themselves or walking down a sidewalk.

Fix Virtual Windows XP Mode VHD Cannot Install or Attach in Windows 7 Error

When installing Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode in Windows 7, the installation may halt with the following error messages:

“The file could not be written.”
“Virtual hard disk could not be attached to the virtual machine. Please check the values provided and try again.”.

The error happens even though the computer hardware specifications have met the system requirements of Windows 7, including those specifically required for Windows Virtual PC, i.e hardware-assisted virtualization (test CPU for VT support).

The root cause of the problem while attempting to install and run Windows 7 Virtual XP Mode lies on Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Anti-virus or other similar security problem, which over zealously tries to protect the PC from unknown or potentially malicious application activities. In the case of Kaspersky, the Application Activity Analyzer proactive feature is likely causing the Windows XP Mode to fail to install or its virtual machine from running.

To fix the Windows XP Mode (XPM) setup error in Windows 7 for users who use the Kaspersky security product, try to disable the detection and scanning of Hidden Object in the Application Activity Analyzer or Proactive Defense setting (depends on version of Kaspersky). Windows XP Mode should be able to install properly after the setting is applied.

A more generic solution is to disable Kaspersky or any anti-virus solution installed on the system, and then reinstall Virtual Windows XP Mode. Windows XP Mode should install perfectly now. After installation completes, re-enable the anti-virus protection, and it won’t interfere with the working of Windows XP Mode.

Acer Aspire One 751 is available in two version. There is £399 version which will ship with Windows XP, 1GB of memory and 160GB of hard drive. For £499 version, it will ship with 2GB of RAM, Vista Home Basic and 250GB of storage.
