A few weeks ago, I had written about how my Gmail got hacked into and how you really don’t know what you got until it’s gone. Jawaad (another MYM blogger) commented,

“MashaAllah a very insightful post indeed. I’m smiling at how you take such an irrelevant issue and relate it to your Deen.”

For me, I wrote of that incident without much thought. Why? Because Islam is literally a way of life for all Muslims. The idea of ’separation of [mosque] and state’ is something alien to Muslims as everything we do reflects our identity as Muslims. When we wake up, when we eat, when we talk, when we answer the call to nature, when we write, when we do anything, we do it under the guidelines of Islam.

Essentially, that’s why MuslimYouthMusings.com (MYM) began. We have so much happening in our lives that it becomes pertinent to discuss our views with others. SubhanAllah, even in a class of peers, there are so many opinions and viewpoints on one issue that is based on their personal experiences and interactions. On a daily basis, we recall several activities that may have taken place that day or week to either ourselves or to others with our perspectives, sidenotes, or tangents on the matter.

That’s exactly what blogging is about; sharing your thoughts with others on several issues. It doesn’t have to be correct. It doesn’t have to be politically correct. It just has to be about you and your thoughts. If they’re wrong or disagreeable, then that’s still fine as there will be healthy discussions (but don’t start arguments for arguments’ sake). With MYM and other Muslim blogging sites, this blogging is just taken to a higher level as Islam and Allah is weaved into the discussion. On MuslimMatters.org, there was once an amusing article that was published discussing a parent’s job description. Yasir Qadhi commented on this and wrote:

Great find! I think you should also ‘Islamify’ this (for ex., amongst the benefits is leaving sadaqa jariya after you die…)

See? What did I tell ya? Even the Shuyookh are saying that articles, such as the amusing one on parenthood, can be ‘Islamified’. It’s just all about making the connection. Once that is made, we can share it with others so that others can benefit and give their two cents on the issue. Man is a social creature, so enjoying to converse is universal, but the manner of conversation, whether it be speeches, articles, or videos, varies from an individual to another. It is important that we explore the different avenues and understand what we feel most comfortable with, and pursue it…

OMG, my coffee spilled! Hey, it just might have a deeper meaning!

Have you ever gone through hundreds of Google pages trying to find a certain hadith or ayah, and have only been left with “Izlam is a violent religion” and other inaccurate information?

I posed my thought and Alhamdulillah got some great responses. The following sites can be used for accurate Islamic information or websites.

ImHalal.com

This site hopes the be the homepage of every Muslim. It’s a search engine designed for Muslims that blocks out any explicit content that one may accidentally find with other sites.

Islamic Search – Google Custom Search Engine

This is a custom search engine that only searches specific, verified Islamic sites. You can even submit your website to be searched. (Note: Make sure you capitalize everything when visiting through the short link: http://bit.ly/3H7UG).

IlmFinder.com

A simple website that does what it says: It helps you find the Islamic information you need. Fast. It allows you to search English or Arabic sites or specifically questions on Islam (Islam Q&A).

~~~
So there you go, three Islamic search engines to help you maintain your consciousness of Allah, even on the internet. Just know that when using this world wide web, Allah can still see you, your facebook wall, myspace page, and even the “private messages” you send on those forums. May Allah help us to be conscious of him always and may He make it easy for us in our youth.
Did I forget to mention a search engine here? Do you have any other Islamic reference websites you use that would be useful for Muslim youth? Please, leave a comment.
It’s time to bring some Ihsaan to our productions.
For part 1 of this two-part article, which speaks about video taping, see here.
As Muslims, we always have to try to do our best in anything we do. For, as stated by the Messenger of Allah (Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam), “Verily, Allah has prescribed proficiency in all things.” (Hadith #17, An-Nawawi 40 Hadith). Therefore, whatever we produce, we must produce it with Ihsaan (translated as excellence or proficiency). Therefore, we can’t have those videos with boring titles, horrible audio and video quality, and a straight, one-angle shot of a speaker from forty-feet away (There’s actually a Masjid that used a security camera to tape a lecture). We have to be the best of the best, as we are conveying a message that is the best from the best Messenger who received the best book from the lord of all the worlds. We have a standard to uphold. In this post, I will go over some basic editing techniques that will hopefully improve your videos.
Editing Software (and why your budget doesn’t matter).
Many people feel that they need the best technology to produce the best content. They feel in order to get to that ultimate goal of excellence, they need the $$$ to pay for it. However, this is definitely not the case. An editing software does not make a great video: it’s the creative, motivated, and focused person behind the camera and computer that makes a great video.
So, let’s begin with some real tips, now, shall we?
First, you need to see what editor you’ll be working on. I’d recommend to start simple, with Windows Movie Maker or iMovie (what usually comes with Windows or Mac computers). For most of the article, I’m writing with Windows Movie Maker in mind, just so you know. Almost all editing software has some basic elements:
A timeline, usually at the bottom of the screen.
A footage bin, usually on the left side of the screen, above the timeline, which has all the footage and audio you have available.
A preview window, where you can see a preview of the final video, from wherever you are in the timeline. (Usually on the right side, above the timeline).
Basically, to edit, you’d drag your video clips from the footage bin to the timeline. You put them in the right order, then add titles, audio, and whatever else you’d like. You’ll see the final preview of your current position in the video on the preview window. This article isn’t really about specific editing softwares and how to use them, so this is just a basic breakdown. If ever you don’t know how to do something, I’m sure that the program’s help feature can definitely help you out. I don’t know why, but people often overlook or under-use the help menu. I don’t know if it’s a pride thing or whatever, but you should definitely use it if you need, and at last resort, search online for the function.
Basic Editing with Video Clips
Most of the time, you want to edit your elements (whether they be video clips or photos) together. What most people think when they see a program filled with fancy effects and transitions (moving from one clip to another), their instinct is to use all of them to look “professional”, when they come off looking tacky (those checkerboards and swirly reveals don’t cut it). However, most videos and films are made with a few very basic and timeless transitions. You should use only these for basic videos.
The Cut – Straight from one clip to another. When one ends, the other starts. This is the most common transition. However, be wise in using it. Cut the end of one clip at a reasonable point (i.e. after someone’s done talking, after an action is completed, not in the middle of something, except when using multiple camera angles).
The Fade – When a clip comes in from a black (or white) screen, or it goes out to a black (or white) screen. This is generally used at the beginning and end of videos. You can use it between clips (and don’t get it confused with the dissolve, see next point) when transitioning between two scenes or ideas.
The Dissolve – When one clip fades into another clip. This transition is sometimes mistakenly called the fade, but it really is called the dissolve. You can use this between clips to show the passing of time or show a new scene or idea (i.e. “then, we went to the Masjid”).Transitions are definitely something that many people misuse but when used properly, they can really enhance one’s video.Another thing that can be used is called a master shot where it’s the main footage you’re using (perhaps your main angle of a lecture, or an interview). Then you cut away from that throughout at certain points with clips called cutaway shots. These cutaway shots can be taken from your b-roll footage (random footage).TitlingI despise the cookie-cutter title. Maybe it’s because I’m a graphic designer, and hate the lack of creativity, but it’s just so boring. I’m talking about the title with white text, a dark blue background (following the template) and written in Times New Roman. Spice it up!Try different fonts and colors, and perhaps different animations. But, from a personal point of view, I’d recommend staying away from animations that have become known and used so many times (some that come to mind is the ‘mirror text’, ‘exploding outline’, and ‘moving tiles, layered’). Also the rule of thirds can be applied here as well. If you’ve ever noticed with news shows, they show the name of someone or the story in a place called the “lower third”. (If you divide your screen, with your mind, into a tic-tac-toe board, you’ll four lines, put your text below the lower horizontal line). You can use this area also, on top of footage, to introduce someone. To see more about the rule of thirds, click here.
Be creative with your titles, and use them to explain what the video can’t.
Make Your Video a Story
Any video you make is a story you’re trying to tell. Create some conflict that ends up getting solved.
There’s usually a structure where you have three acts. It’s similar to play-writing of scriptwriting, but you don’t really have to make a precise script. I personally haven’t dabbled too far into this, but the main thing is that you introduce a conflict and solve it. People like drama. Give them what they like and they’ll appreciate your video. Use the three acts to first introduce your conflict, perhaps bring some other elements that complicate it, and something that solves it. An idea would be, if you’re trying to promote an event like a brother’s live-in camp at the Masjid, then show a brother that acts bad (first act). Show him having some sort of experience that makes him want to be good (second act). And finally bring him to the camp where he finds his solution (third act). Of course, that’s a very cheesy example, but you should try to get the point. Plan out your video, don’t just go straight into it.
I believe there is more to the three-act structure than mentioned here, but the main point I’m trying to get across is that you should tell some sort of story to connect with your audience.
To conclude, there are many sites that I’ve researched to find out what I know. Two good ones are Leechon.com (a Muslim brother’s reflections on his business, in the field of video and marketing), you can check his archive to see some of his older stuff that deals more with video and film; and also TakeZer0.com (go to their episodes and look at some of their older stuff that includes tips on film and video).
And finally, there’s brother Belal Khan’s (of Leechon) project called MessageMastery, which is a community of people to learn about video techniques and marketing. Here’s the first session of his series where I picked up a few things. It’s a long video, but if you have the time, go ahead as it’ll really benefit you. If not, you can skip through to find some central points he speaks of (it’s broken up as it’s a powerpoint).
May Allah help you all with your endeavors and may He bless all of your projects. Ameen.
Wasalaamu ‘Alaikum
By AbdulBasit Khan
Hey everybody, there’s this beautiful Du’aa’ (supplication) that Shaykh Hossam (who taught at the Islamic University of Madeenah for over 10 years, has received many Ijaazaat, and is a senior scholar) has been teaching us at PGMA for a number of nights now, and I wanted to share it with you in this post.
It is called, the Du’aa’ of Istikhaarah. Which the Prophet taught to his Companions (and as is mentioned in Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Jaabir) says that: كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يعلمنا الاستخارة في الأمور كلها ، كالسورة من القرآن The Prophet used to sit and teach us the (Supplication of) Istikhaarah [and he advised us to say it] regarding all of our matters & affairs. And he would teach us this Du’aa’, like he would teach us the Surahs of the Qur`aan.)
Okay, now here are a few things to note:
Istikhaarah, is an Arabic word which literally means,  seeking (counsel, guidance for) what is good, what is best.
Hence, you’ll find that the Du’aa’ begins with the words: اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيْرُكَ
“O Allah, I am doing Istikhaarah to You”   i.e. I am seeking Your guidance/counsel, as to what is going to be best for me.
بِعِلْمِكَ    ”…by Your (infinite) knowledge.”  i.e. the reason I’m asking You to guide me, to direct me, to what is best for me — is because of Your infinite knowledge.
Later on, in the Du’aa’, you say: اَللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنتَ تَعْلَمُ, أَنَّ هَاذَا الأَمْرَ
  ”O Allah! If You know that this matter…”  — and here, the Prophet told the Companions that, ‘You should mention your matter, whatever it is.’  Marriage, a job, a family issue, whatever. Basically, any decision that you’re about to make, if you say this Du`aa` of Istikhaarah  before doing it … then Allah will guide you in that matter.
This will be like your “Divine GPS” :)
خَيْرٌ لِي, فِي دِيْنِي, وَمَعَاشِي, وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي
”…is going to be good for me, in relation to my Deen, and in relation to my worldly life (and livelihood), and also in relation to my Hereafter”
And the rest of the Du`aa` goes on… Then (O Allah), decree it for me, make it easy for me & bless me in it.
And if — in Your knowledge (O Allah) — You know that this ‘matter’ is gonna be bad for me, either in my Deen, or in my worldly life, or in my Hereafter, then take it away from me & me away from it.  And decree what is best for me, wherever it may be. And then make me pleased with it.
——————————————————
The above was just an overview, of some of the meanings of this Du`aa`. I’ll just leave it at that and let you discover some of the other meanings on your own. As for the actual Du`aa`, in its entirety, with the translation, and some comments of how (or when) a person should say it…  see the below:
Once again, the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallaam) taught us to say the following du’aa’, when we’re about to make any decision:
  اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيْرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ
  وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ, وأَسْـأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ العَظِيم.ي
فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلاَ أَقْدِرُ, وَتَعْلَمُ وَلاَ أَعْلَمُ, وَأَنْتَ عَلاَّمُ الغَيُوب.ي
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَاذَا الأَمْرَ — خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي
   وَمَعَاشِي, وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي, فَاقْدِرْهُ لِي, وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي, ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيه.ي
  وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَاذَا الأَمْرَ, شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي, وَمَعَاشِي
  وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي, فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي, وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنهُ, وَاقْدِرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيثُ كاَنَ, ثُمَّ رَضِّنِي بِه.ث
”O Allah! I seek Your guidance for that which is good, because of Your infinite knowledge, and Your ultimate power. And I ask You from Your great bounty. Certainly, You are able and I am not. You have (infinite) knowledge and I do not. You are the Knower of the hidden (past, present and future).
O Allah, if You know that this matter — (then you name your matter) — is good for me, in my deen, in my life, and in my Hereafter, then make it possible for me, and make it easy (smooth) for me, and then bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is going to be bad for me, in my deen, in my life, and in my Hereafter, then take it away from me, and take me away from it. And (O Allah) take me to that which is good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.”
The Sunnah (what the Prophet taught his Companions) is that you first pray 2 normal Rak’ahs [2 units of Prayer]. Then after you finish the 2 Rak’ahs, you raise your hands up and say this du’aa’, sincerely and earnestly.
Some ’scholars’ say that, after you make this du’aa’  you will have a dream indicating to you what is best — but the thing is, this has no proof (it’s just an opinion). The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) – when he taught the Companions to say this du’aa’ – he never told them that they would see a dream afterwards. Therefore note that this is just an opinion by some scholars, and is not necessarily accurate.
The correct understanding is this: That you pray the 2 Rak’ahs, and make this du’aa’ sincerely. Then wait for a while, and afterwards, the decision that you feel more inclined towards, is the correct one.
So after making this du’aa’, go ahead and make the decision that you choose. Because you asked Allah to guide you to the best choice ~ hence, whatever choice you make now will be under Allah’s Guidance. If it is good for you, Allah will make it easy and smooth for you. If it is something bad, then Allah will take it away from you and you away from it, and give you something that will be better for you.
Generally, you should make this du’aa’ just once. If you wanna do it more times, that’s up to you. Lastly, to learn more about the beauty & inner dimensions of the Prayer of Istikhaarah, please you just have to watch this awesome video, entitled: The Divine GPS  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHvkBOtsA4E
By Arif Kabir
Photo by gcraig3si via Flickr
Reading the Washington Post, I came across a first page article that really struck me; it was basically about an Amtrak engineer who had watched a dozen suicides happen in front of his eyes over the course of 20 years. People would be sitting in the middle of train tracks just waiting to be hit, and the train engineers would not be able to deter the person with their frantic horn blasts and their attempts to brake the 75-mph train. As the article mentions:
“When I looked in the mirror, he was tumbling in the air, just flying,” Evans said. “I can see it as clearly as if it was happening in front of me right now.”
Colorfast mental snapshots of horror, a sense of overwhelming helplessness, sympathy and sometimes anger — these are the aftershocks that engineers and subway train operators report from their special perch as unwilling agents of sudden death.”
Imagine yourself, witnessing a murder happening in front of your eyes, and there is nothing that you can do. Now imagine all those around you that are following the wrong path and are destined for Hell if they don’t change – are you in that same sense of hopelessness?
“Metro’s wide windshields are designed to maximize the engineer’s view. Unfortunately, that means train operators see tragedy unfold with widescreen clarity, a high-def horror they never forget.”
What better maximization do we have other than our eyes in which we get a full view of everything happening in front of us? We have become so used to seeing murder scenes, hearing reports of the amount of dead people in a war or earthquake, reading tallying scores of dead people on Facebook and Twitter, but yet, our feelings of sadness have ebbed away. Why do we no longer feel the ‘high-def’ horror of seeing someone practicing another religion other than Islam and paving their way towards Hell? Have we become so desensitized?
“…the flip side of not being responsible is the devastating feeling of not be able to do anything in the moments before impact. The driver of a car might at least have the option of swerving out of the way or slamming on the brakes. The driver of a train doesn’t steer, and it can take a half-mile or more to stop. Evans has conditioned himself not to hit the emergency brake, a futile gesture more likely to injure passengers or derail the train than protect the person out front.”
Have we had previous experiences that no matter how much we tried, our attempts were futile? Because of this, we just stopped hitting ‘the emergency brake’ and stopped calling people to Islam? This really shouldn’t be the case because we never know when someone will become Muslim and come back to the Straight Path.
“The operator’s sense of helplessness can be worse when the person on the tracks doesn’t actually want to die.”
Sometimes we see people that really don’t believe in their religion and are looking for a way out. However, a circumstance wouldn’t allow them, maybe because of family or perhaps because of cainotophobia (fear of change)? Prophet Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam) experienced this when Abu Talib refused to accept Islam because of his forefathers, so it definitely did happen. However, like the Prophet, we got to do as much as we can in hard times like those.
We’re not as hopeless as these train engineers that can’t do anything when a murder’s about to happen. Alhamdulillah, Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) gave us much more freedom to do something. We have a full view of the way people are living their lives and may sometimes feel a sense of hopelessness. But get over it. The Prophet did, and ended up making the whole of Arabia Muslim and the 1.5 billion Muslims now. Go help a Da’wah initiative. Be a true ambassador of Islam. You have potential to make somebody Muslim, so live up to that potential.
May Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) guide us, guide all those around us, and bring us together in Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen…
By Arif Kabir
For all of those of you that are using Google Documents, I found that the two following Google Docs usage has really helped me in having a more productive day:
1)     Daily Checklist – I was once talking to someone and he was telling me about how stressed he felt. When asked what factors stressed him out, the top three answers I got was food, work, and school. His situation is one of many; it could be something as little as food, but it would make a big impact in someone’s life. Among my personal priorities include Salah, Qur’an, and exercise. Therefore, I made a Google Form for myself:
When I had first started with this form, I had originally written exact numbers for the Qur’an, Salah, and the exercise. However, I noticed that if I didn’t get to do all of the numbers for any of them, I wouldn’t feel like filling the form out because we all want to see a perfect result. Therefore, I changed it to either ‘Yes’ or ‘Will Insha’Allah, so even if I don’t do all, I wrote ‘Will Insha’Allah’, which makes me want to strive to do better the next day. I also have a small Hadith box in which I submit a Hadith per day that I reflect on. The amazing thing about all of this is that in all, this task list would only take about an hour to two hours, but it really makes you feel better at the end of the day. List your daily minimum priorities so that you will feel that you accomplished at least something. The nice thing about this is that your answers get aggregated into a single spreadsheet, so you can see your answers over a period of a long time. Once it becomes part of your habit, you can add activities to the form to make yourself more productive Bi’idhnillah.
2)     Google Spreadsheet Tasks List: Google has released a task widget that one has access to from Gmail. I found that to be useful, but found it to be a tad more organized to bring it into a spreadsheet because they have special tools that can be used to have a very nice task list:
This is a blank version of the log that I use in my Google spreadsheet. I included both weekly objectives, monthly objectives, and another sheet for previous tasks (every time I finish a task, I move it over to the completed tasks’ sheet). The date of this writing was the 17<sup>th</sup>, so you can see that the colors are coded to what day it is – the day before was black (task is dead), today is red (urgent), tomorrow is orange (important), and any day after tomorrow is yellow (head’s up). The best part of it all is that it’s all automatic. Google has a feature that allows you to make rules based on color:
This should be at the top of all of our Google Documents and it should be something that we use on a daily basis. It helps us to keep in track our vision for this week and for this month (and if you’re really aspiring, for the year also), as well as keeping track of daily activities that are dear to us. If you need any help in making these forms, please don’t hesitate to send us an email. May Allah help us to use these tools to improve our productivity and allow us to accomplish more in less time for His Sake.
By Jawaad Ahmad Khan
No doubt the medium of video is spreading like wild-fire all through the internet. The real question is: How can this medium be used for the sake of Allah?
In the past years, many Muslim video productions have been done Alhamdulillah (DVDs, VHS, etc.). However, quite a few failed in engaging its Muslim viewers, and the effect of the message was lost. In this iTech post, we will discuss a few techniques on video taping a production that will bi-ithnillah (with Allah’s permission) improve your video and draw interest to it.
The first thing that needs to be deciphered is, what type of video are you making? Is it a live lecture, speech, or a planned video?
Let’s define these.
1. Live Lecture/Speech
A live event in which you are taping a person speaking from a podium or sitting.
2. Planned Video
This is basically a video that you’re taping where you have the flexibility of multiple takes (i.e. it’s not a live event).
Depending on what video you’re doing, here’s a few principles to follow.
Lighting
Lighting is one of the most important elements to photography and video. The ideal set-up would be a 3-point lighting system. What this is, is three lights to light your subject.
You use three lights, a key light, which should be the brightest and main source of light, a fill light, less intense and used to eliminate the shadows that may show from the other side, and the backlight, which lights up the overall scene.
Try to use this for when you’re taping a planned video. Use the key and fill lights if that’s all you have. And use any natural light (sunlight, room lamp, etc.) when taping something. You don’t necessarily need professional work lights or all that. In many of my videos, I’ve used flashlights, lamps, torch lights, and even a chandelier’s lights. Here’s a video showing all the lights I’d used for a Ramadan Message I made. As you see, I have a lamp in the back, some light from the ceiling fan, and a bright flashlight hung unto a lampshade.
When you’re taping a live video, you don’t have that much leeway all the time. My advice – use the lighting already available to you. If you’re taping a speaker, ask him to move based on where the light’s best (a little to the left or right, but don’t move them to the other side of the room or something!). Use lights when you can and always look at your shot before you start taping, making sure that the camera’s settings make the quality look good.
Audio
Some say that audio is 51% of the production. People will look at a bad quality video, but they will not tolerate something that hurts their ears with all the noise. If you can, try to record your audio separate from the camera, with a microphone or a voice recorder. In many khutbaat (sermons) that I’ve taped, I used an mp3 player with a built-in mic to record the audio straight from the podium. If you don’t have the privilege of separate audio, then look at the settings on your camera for noise reduction (but don’t overdo it). Also, move closer to your subject, as opposed to zooming in. It’s better for the video quality and the audio quality if you’re camera is 9 or 10 feet away as opposed to the back of a 100 foot masjid. As a final point, never talk or even whisper when taping. Anything behind the camera gets caught, and it’s clearer than the speaker that’s farther away. I’ve gotten caught with a whispery “Salallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam” a few times and it sounds unprofessional. Just mouth whatever you have to say.
Frame The Shot
Compare these two shots:
This is Gyasi McKinzie (I found this while searching for Islamic speaker on Google, check out their video). The first one doesn’t look very visually pleasant. It’s far away, the speaker is smack dab in the middle, and there’s so much space above his head, it’s so hard to focus on him. In the second picture, the speaker is right there, and you can easily focus on him. The rule applied here is called the Rule of Thirds. (By the way, in the same video, the brother/sister who edited it did apply this technique in other parts, I’m not bashing their video.)
The Rule of thirds basically makes you divide your video into a tic-tac-toe board. Three lines across and three lines vertically. Then, you basically place your subject along one of those lines or at the intersection of two points (never in the center). Because the human eye usually would move from the top of the screen down, or from the left of the screen to the right. Think about any T.V. shows where they show interviews. Is the person ever in the middle of the shot? No, they’re always in the right or left side. This just makes it a bit more interesting. Here’s some more detailed info on the rule of thirds. Also, another technique used in the second picture is the elimination of head room. Headroom is all the open space above the speaker’s head. Usually, you want to eliminate that so the viewers’ eyes don’t wander.
Finally, the CONTENT!
Know that no matter what equipment you have, how many lights or microphones you possess, how much money you have to invest, it’s a filmmaker that makes the movie, it’s a creative person that creates beautiful video. As long as your intention is clear, and you’re trying to spread a message with the video, then Allah will bless your efforts and make it easy for you. Even if the video doesn’t come out 100% professionally, at least you can reap some rewards from it, and that’s what’s most important.
May Allah help us to perfect our skills in all areas and may He bless our intentions and allow us to use any medium we can to spread the message of Islam.
Comment with an “Ameen” if you agree.
By Arif Kabir
[Editor's Note: This is the beginning of an Islamic Technology series (iTech in short) that will be dealing with different technologies and how we can use them for Islam. This particular one is rather technical, but it should prove to be useful for all online writers and bloggers Insha'Allah]
While compiling Shaykh Muhammad AlShareef’s Heart Wheel Journals into a list for easier viewing for MYM, I wanted to have all the videos on the same page. However, since there were more than 20 videos, I wanted to have a hyperlinked table of contents so that one could just click on one of the contents and go to that specific video on the page instead of having to continuously scroll to find the desired video.
Page Jumping
Alhamdulillah, I found the perfect tool for the job once I learned about Page Jumps. They basically allow one to instantly go to another page section with just one click. The interesting part about it is that it will not only take you to that section, but it will also have an added value in the address bar. For example, to watch the tenth episode of the Heart Wheel Journal, it’d be
(Original post url) + #day-10 = http://muslimyouthmusings.com/2009/08/26/the-heart-wheel-journal-videos/#day-10
(Coincidentally, the video’s title is “To go up, you must go down”, which is what page jumps are all about:) If you want the twentieth episode, just delete #day-10, add #day-20, and you’re set!
Now, you may be wondering, “why is this tech tidbit being shared with me?” Well, it’s to bore you to death as we tech junkies love to do! (lol)
Seriously though, it was so that we can take our referencing to a new level. Basically, I was checking out University of Southern California’s database of the Qur’an and Sunnah and with my newfound knowledge on page jumps, I noticed that this website was also using page jumps for every single Ayah and Hadith, which I found to be amazing, given how much code needs to be written to have so many page jumps (they probably have some top-notch coding/programmers/software). I then realized that we can really utilize this for Islamic reference purpose, in a method that I like to call, “Sahih Page Jumping”
Sahih Page Jumping
Let’s say you’re on the chapter of knowledge in Sahih Bukhari at the USC database. You see the Hadith,
Volume 1, Book 3, Number 106:
Narrated ‘Ali:
The Prophet said, “Do not tell a lie against me for whoever tells a lie against me (intentionally) then he will surely enter the Hell-fire.”
This Hadith inspires you so much that you want to share it with others (as a sidenote, this Hadith tells us the importance of why we should be referencing all our works so we that this won’t lead us to the Hell-Fire – may Allah protect us). You could 1) share the Hadith by just mentioning it’s in Sahih Bukhari. You could take it a step further and 2) mention which volume and book it is. However, it has been seen in the past that many of these references have been faulty because some people would actually make up numbers. The best way is 3) to take them back to the original text and to do it in a manner that would be easiest for them.
Each title on the USC database is a page jump. You can tell because if you scroll over it, it becomes underlined (a characteristic of a hyperlink) but if you try clicking it, you won’t be able to: it seems like a dead link. If you need more proof, then look at the source code for that Hadith and you will see that it says:
a name="001.003.106"
Volume 1, Book 3, Number 106:
You will see that it says <a name=”001.003.106″> above the title and this confirms that it is is a page jump (the numbers also confirm the hadith chapter, book, and number). Now, as an example,if you are typing in example.com + # + 001.003.106 (number), it would equal example.com/page.html#001.003.106. Let’s add it to the real url and we get: http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/hadith/bukhari/003.sbt.html#001.003.106, which takes you to the Hadith that we are currently looking at.
So for your next blog post, if you want to post a Hadith, I strongly recommend you use the ‘Sahih page jumping’ method and add the hyperlink for the Hadith with the necessary page-jump hashtag (#) so that both you and your reader can be rest assured it’s an authentic statement. Furthermore, for those WordPress bloggers, if you want to use Page Jumps to organize some of your own writings, please visit this WordPress support page and follow the instructions to set up your Page Jumps.
May Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) keep us away from relaying inauthentic statements and keep us on the Straight Path. Ameen…
By the way, need a ride back to the top?
Eid Mubarak to all of you from the MYM staff!
We’re very proud to give you an Eid gift this year – We’re very proud and grateful to Allah to announce that http://youthmusings.wordpress.com is now …MuslimYouthMusings.com!!
This project had began with one person but soon progressed to include writers from all over the nation. No longer is it a .wordpress blog, but a youth blog dedicated especially for the Muslim youth and for the Islamic revival all over the world. The MYM staff realized this change and thus upgraded to this new domain so that we can now have a unique identity in the Muslim blogosphere. We pray that Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) blesses this project and other projects that culminate as a result of this effort. Ameen…
If you’re interested in joining us and becoming a staff writer, please be sure to email us. JazaakumAllahu Khayran!
Part of the Mission: Ramadan 1430H Series
Waking up before Fajr. Eating with the community at Maghrib. Praying for hours after Isha.
A very unlikely schedule,  except in the month of Ramadan.
I find it very interesting that we are capable of doing so much Ibaadat in our normal schedule but never go about doing so until Ramadan appears. Many people say, “You know what, I’m just going to go to Pakistan/Egypt/Saudi Arabia, stay there, and do nothing but concentrate on worshiping Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala). This dream of going off to a faraway land and just forsaking all their obligations and responsibilities takes such a great hold on them that they soon begin to feel that they can’t do any good until they arrive at that dreamland of theirs.
Ramadan comes to teach us that we can still function in society and have more than ample time for Ibadaat. Just think about it – You don’t miss waking up before Fajr – why? Because you gotta have your Suhoor. You don’t miss out on Maghrib Adhan – why? Because you gotta have your Iftar (Funny how a lot of things revolve around food)! You don’t miss out on Isha – why? So that you can continue listening to the whole Qur’an behind the Imam. It truly is amazing that we can be so steadfast in these Sunnah prayers but we can’t find the time throughout the day to read at least 5 pages of the Qur’an, but yet we are so steadfast after Isha’. Let’s try fixing this dilemma and make a schedule for a ‘Daily Qur’anic Immersion”. It basically goes like this – style your life according to the Salah times (and not vice versa) and make sure to read at least some Qur’an during that time.
Before Fajr, wake up (like you do for Suhoor) and review/memorize/read until the time comes for Fajr. I found that the early morning is one of the easiest times to recite Qur’an because since you’ve just woken up, your mind is fresh and clear, and you can really concentrate on the Qur’an. As everyone is sleeping, the crickets are outside chirping (at least in Maryland:), and it is still dark outside, it truly is a very peaceful moment. We should all try our best to recite Qur’an at this time as it is even commended in the Quran in Surah Isra’, Ayah 78:
أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَىٰ غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ وَقُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِإِنَّ قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا
Perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) from mid-day till the darkness of the night (i.e. the Zuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib, and ‘Isha’ prayers), and recite the Quran in the early dawn (i.e. the morning prayer). Verily, the recitation of the Quran in the early dawn is ever witnessed (attended by the angels in charge of mankind of the day and the night).
In the midday, while at school/work, this is when the Dhuhr and Asr prayers take place. It is extremely important for us to be mindful of these two prayers, especially Asr as Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says in Surah Baqarah, Ayah 138:
حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَىٰ وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ
Guard strictly (five obligatory) As-Salawat (the prayers) especially the middle Salat (i.e. the best prayer – ‘Asr). And stand before Allah with obedience.
If we can try to read the Qur’an even just a little, we will  see that it really gives a spiritual boost and rejuvenation since it gets you to seclude yourself from the materialistic society for a moment and just reflect on Allah. When you return back to your work/school atmosphere, you come with a refreshed focus and purpose.
Once the time comes in for Maghrib, take some time to go over everything that you had read today. If you were reviewing the whole day, try memorizing something new, or review if you have been memorizing in the day. Ideally, it’d be best if you met up with someone, like a Qur’an study buddy, and tested each other on your memorization and review. This way, both of you can be motivated to study together – if needed, make rules such as that if one of you is not ready, then that person has to treat the other to food at his house dinner (my father’s Qur’an teacher actually did this with a student and after the whole class ate at his house, that student’s wife then made sure he never made the same mistake again!:)
Isha – After Isha, it is recommended to go straight to bed (as many such as Ali [radhiAllahu anhu]  did), so after Isha’, get into your snugly bed and instead of mulling over the day, prop open the Qur’an and just stare at it, even if you aren’t fully concentrating. You’ll see that in a minute or two of mind-wandering, your attention will eventually come to what you’re staring at, and you’ll find yourself drawn in. The best part is, you don’t even have to be standing or even sitting up – Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) says in Surah Aali Imran, Ayah 191:
الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمْ وَيَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ
Those (men of understanding) who remember Allah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth.
This truly is a mercy from Allah that we can remember Him in these different postures, so we can definitely be in bed and remember Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) by reading his Holy Book before going to sleep.
If we can keep up this Daily Qur’an Immersion, it will definitely make a big change in our lives. I remember when I was close to finishing the Hifzh of the Qur’an, I was memorizing almost triple my normal assignment and would spend every opportunity reading the Qur’an. I was using the type of Qur’an that has English on the borders (so the original Uthmani Arabic script is still intact) and I was so drawn in it at times that I would seriously get the feeling that Allah was talking directly to me; I would tremble when I read about the torment of the disbelievers and would feel grateful when reading about Jannah and all of Allah’s bounties. It was definitely an amazing experience and drew me much closer to the Qur’an
If you do not feel that your schedule will allow you to read a lot, then at least do a little continuously because Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) especially loves the small deed continously. If you feel that you don’t even have time to do a little, then listen to this beautiful parable my Hifzh School teacher once told us:
“If I was to hold a bucket filled to the brim with sand, it would seem that the bucket is packed and that nothing else could fit inside. However, if I was to take some water and pour it in the bucket, wouldn’t it be able to fit inside without any sand overflowing? No matter how packed the sand may look, there will always be ample cracks and gaps for the water to go through.”
Even though our schedules may seem full, there will always be some time in the schedule that we can reserve for the Qur’an.
Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet , said, “There is no envy except in two (cases): A man whom Allaah has taught the Quran and he recites it during the hours of the night and during the hours of the day, and another man listens to him and says, ‘I wish I had been given what has  been given to so-and-so, so that I might do what he does’; and a man whom Allaah has  given wealth and he spends it on what is just and right. Whereupon another man may say, ‘I wish I had been given what so-and-so has been given, for then I would do what he does.’” [Al-Bukhaari]
May Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) strengthen our relationship with the Qur’an and make us among those who recite it during the hours of the night and during the hours of the day. Ameen…
Daily Qur’anic Immersion. Are you in?
