Tyrone Hendrix is a cousin of the world’s foremost guitar virtuoso Jimi Hendrix. He has played drums with over 40 different bands in his 23 years of experience. With lighting fast hands, inventive rhythm and perfect tone, he personifies the saying “it runs in the family.” Tyrone has been playing drums since he was 9 years old and continuously plays with Liv Warfield, Tony Furtado, Tony Ozier, LaRonda Steele,Tony Rich Project, Keegan Smith, Tony Toni Tone, Robin Hodge Williams, Demitrix Tolfrey and Derick Hall. He is an active member of The Trinity Full Gospel Pentecostal Church in Portland, OR.

Every Saturday at Music Villa from 11-1:30pm there’s a FREE Home Recording Workshop with Grammy Award Winning Doc Wiley. This Saturday (Sept. 4) Doc will be starting fresh with his 3 month workshop. Month 1 focuses on the basics of home recording, setup, and maintenance. Month 2 is Songwriter Bootcamp and will feature local songwriters in real-life recording situations. 9:00 - 9:30 am: Orientation

9:30 – 10:00 am: Rhythm Aerobics

This is a complete hand and foot warm-up/workout that students will be able to use in their future practice routines. It utilizes practice pads and HansenFutz pedals to get students familiar with various musical styles. This is a constant 30-minute workout. Similar to standard aerobics, we will use music examples at various tempos as the metronome. Students will receive a complimentary Johnny’s Rhythm Aerobics audio CD to take home with them to continue their progress.

10:00 - 11:00 am: Freehand Technique

A comprehensive focus on Johnny’s original Freehand technique. We will cover and break down all the aspects of this technique. Focus will be on exercises from The Original Freehand Technique book. Students will be able to play all note values utilizing the Freehand Technique upon completion of this one-day course.

11:00 - 12:00 pm: Groove Factory

Students will learn Johnny’s exercises and comprehensive study utilizing one measure of groove. The focus will be on kick, snare and hat grooves. This study is virtually an endless range of ideas to work on your grooves. All note values within 16th notes will be explored and students will be shown how to make their own daily exercises and original grooves.

12:00 - 1:00 pm: Hand Building

Enjoy lunch during a session on endorsements. We will discuss the realities of the endorsement world. This portion of Pro Drum School will be open to questions and will be an interactive discussion on the drum industry. We will also discuss realistic employment opportunities in the music industry. Promotion will be a key focus point.

1:00 - 1:30 pm: Drum ‘n’ Bass

1:30 – 2:00 pm: House

We will explore the world of “4 on the Floor.” This seemingly simple DJ-based groove is an endless groove study. House exercises and examples will be given to teach students. Basic and advanced techniques will be studied to get the most out of these grooves.

2:00 – 3:00 pm: Hand Building

Get the most out of your hands! Learn techniques that will get your hands under control utilizing Johnny’s C.R.E. method. Focus will be on single strokes, paradiddles and double strokes. If you think your basic rudiments are together, then get ready to have them flying at the end of this hour.

3:00 – 3:30 pm: Developing Your Own Voice on the Drums

Starting with the snare drum, we will spend time going around the entire drum set learning how to explore the endless sounds you can get out of your kit.

3:30 – 4:00 pm: Rhythmic Knowledge

Understand and apply basic and advanced rhythms to your playing. We will study standard core rhythms and polyrythms such as 5s, 7s, etc. This will utilize the Pro-Logix Pad. Rhythm-against-rhythm exercises will provide even more for your vocabulary.

4:00 – 4:30 pm: Technology and Resources

• How to make your own studio on a budget
• Basics of Ableton LIVE
• Basics of REASON
• Using Garage Band to your advantage

Mike will be joined by other local musicians to present a bluegrass jam workshop and a guitar playing clinic. They will play a few tunes and then talk about the “how to” jam etiquette. Mike will then present some guitar instruction on flatpicking and improvisation techniques followed by an open discussion. The group will close with a few more jam tunes. Handouts and materials will be provided.

Tony Furtado grew up in Pleasanton, CA and took up the banjo at age 12. At age 19, he entered himself in the banjo playing competition at the venerable bluegrass festival in Winfield, Kansas (Walnut Valley Festival) and won the Grand National Championship. Hailed as a banjo prodigy, he got his first record deal in 1992 and has been making music and releasing records ever since. As he was cementing his reputation as banjoist extraordinaire, Furtado was also developing himself into an equally virtuosic slide guitarist. And now, with his latest release, Thirteen (Funzalo Records, 2007), this restless artist makes an exponential leap into the wide-open spaces of mythopoetic America, a terrain inhabited by such personal heroes as Cooder, the Band, Creedence,Petty and Waits. No two ways about it – this heartfelt, multileveled work completes Tony Furtado’s ascent from the folk circuit to the big leagues.
