Once in a rare while I will post something on MusTech.Net that has nothing to do with Music, Education, or Technology -this is one of those times. Wendell August Forge is a Local and National Treasure; people from all over the world have beautiful items that were forged there. The loss is staggering.

The large reach of MusTech.Net will carry this message to those looking to find out more information about this tragedy and to inform about the spirit of our community. Wendell August Forge was America’s oldest and largest forge -until ironically, it was destroyed by fire today.

Sometime after 2:00 p.m. today (March 6th), Wendell August Forge caught on fire, by 6:00 p.m., it was completely destroyed. This post is a brief account from my vantage point as a witness to the event.

While my wife and I were out at the Grove City Outlet earlier in the day, we saw huge plumes of smoke emanating from atop Grove City. It wasn’t long before our phones started ringing with calls from our friends telling us that Wendell August Forge was on fire. I decided that it would be best if I headed over to the forge directly to see if I could lend any assistance and to observe our Police, Fire, and EMS teams first hand. Although to many that read MusTech.Net it would seem odd that I would do that (as you know me as an educator and musician), I have a vested interested in the Welfare of the community as an elected councillor and the chair of the Police and Fire Committee.

While on route home, I called my fellow councillor, Jeffrey Black, and we decided to drive to the scene together. I picked him up at his house and we left for the forge. The time was approx. 4:00 p.m. when we arrived on the scene.

When Jeff and I arrived, the Emergency Trucks were lined up on Madison Ave all the way to Pine Street (many blocks) and most of the side streets were closed for blocks as well. The streets were so lined with fire-hoses that it looked like spaghetti had landed from the “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” movie.

Well over 10 fire companies had arrived on the scene and were working like an organized army to deal with the fire. One of the first people we came across was fireman Todd Wood. He was organizing much of the rear effort of the fire and he told us that, for the most part, the fire was beginning to be under control and that he believed nothing would be saved of the forge. After a brief chat, we continued down the avenue.

Next, we ran into the owner of Superior Ambulance, Doug Dick. He and a team of EMS personnel were making sure that the area was secured and that the firefighters were not getting over exhausted -strength-wise or heat-wise. Doug had informed me much later in the day that when he got the call about the fire he was able to have a fleet of seven ambulances on the road to Wendell August Forge within 15 minutes. He and some of the ambulances were there in mere minutes. What a great service they provide to our community.

One of the Salvation Army trucks was parked very near this location. This is where I later met a fellow by the name of Joe -he headed up the relief effort for the Salvation Army. As soon as they heard about the size of the fire on their scanner, they “loaded up” and set course for Grove City. The Salvation Army truck team, along with volunteers from the Red Cross, were there to provide relief to the Firefighters, EMS, and Police in the form of food and water. It was a great to see them there providing that service to our men and women.

As we neared the three-quarter way to the forge (we had to park blocks away because of all the equipment), we came across a number of firefighters that were handling the reservoirs of water in make-shift pools. Because of the size of the fire, the tanker trucks were loading water from off-site hydrants and then taking them to these pools to offload. It was a well-oiled effort.

Our first sighting of the forge came in huge cloud of smoke as the south-end of the building was still on fire and engulfed in smoke. In the distance we could see firefighters still battling the fire and winning. We could easily see the ladder truck with a mounted hose turret laying down a constant barrage of water on and inside the forge from on high.

It didn’t take long to see that Todd was right earlier, the forge was a total loss. We could literally see through much of it and the roof had collapsed in many places. When we arrived at the forge itself, we came across Jeff Badger, the GC fire chief, he very busy and in the midst of detailing plans to a large mixed-company group of firefighters. This was certainly a multi-task force operation.

When we arrived at the main entrance to the forge, Assistant Fire Chief and town Councillor Jeffrey Hodge was surveying the damage. I came to find out the Jeff was one of the first on the scene and made the call to bring in more companies and escalate the status of the situation. Also, when it was believed that there was still a person in the building, Jeff risked his life to go in and search. Fortunately, the person was able to get out and so was Jeff. It is amazing to me just what true heroes these home-town men and women are.

About that time, I bumped into another Councillor, Joel Bigley. He had been there almost from the onset helping in any way that he could. He was part of the personnel that took some of the salvaged treasures and office items form the forge off the hands of the firefighters when they brought them out and moved the items to safety.

It was about this time that Todd Wood ran up to Jeff and I and asked us if we had a “loose” car available -meaning one that wasn’t blocked in by the unbelievable amount of emergency gear and vehicles. We did -about 5 blocks from there. Todd had explained that despite the arrival of the Salvation Army vehicle and teams, there was not enough food and water for all of the emergency personnel that had been there for hours by this point -many of which were exhausted and hungry. Jeff Black and I raced off to my truck. I started dialing 411 immediately to get the numbers of local business so I could call them en-route.

This purpose of this article is to provide detail about the MusEdChat event and suggest a number of ways to more effectively manage and process the deluge of information that is generated during the musedchat session. For the sake of simplicity, I am going to continue this post using multiple headers:

Twitter Basics:

In order to participate in the Music Education Twitter chat you need to have an active twitter account

Get your twitter account by visting Twitter and Signing Up -there is no cost

Concept -> Twitter is a type of messaging/syndication service that allows you to type a message up to 140 characters long -known as a TWEET

Concept -> Following a user allows you to “tune in” messages from the people that you have selected to Follow

Concept ->@pisanojm or @yourname is your twitter username – your Twitter URL is simply http://twitter.com/pisanojm (your @name without the “@”)

Concept -> @name when placed in a message will alert a Twitter User that you are tweeting to them or replying to them

Concept -> RT (usually followed by @user) in a message signifies that a message being posted by an @user is being RE-Tweeted and the content is someone else’s not yours

Concept -> Direct Message a “d” preceding a username signifies a Direct Message (Ex. d @pisanojm) -You can only send a DM if both of the users are following each other

Concept -> Hash-Tags -These are used in Twitter to allow users to maintain observation and focus on a particular subject -Hash-tags are preceded by a “#” sign (Ex. #musedchat)

If you are new to Twitter and the #musedchat, consider following @pisanojm and @Zweibz7 when you sign up for your Twitter account -tweet them any questions you may have…

#MusEdChat Basics:

A Twitter Topic Poll will be conducted prior to each of the Music Education Twitter Chats and anyone may vote on the topic

The time of the Music Education Twitter Chat is currently EVERY Monday at 8:00 p.m. EST and ends at 9:00 p.m. EST

The Hash-Tag used to filter and funnel the Music Education Twitter Chat is #musedchat (Barbara -crystal clear?)

You must be searching and displaying the #musedchat tag in a Twitter Application in order to participate effectively with the Twitter Chat -else you will be missing just about everything discussed

After quite a long period of inactivity, the Music Education Blog Carnival is back! Please spread the word about this endeavour by re-tweeting, subscribing to, and/or promoting this effort in anyway possible. I, for one, am glad its back!

It’s my hope that we can continue this carnival into the future and provide an online avenue to bring together bloggersthat write great and informative posts about music, education, and technology. This digest is part of that effort and conversation.

This month, after a slow start, there were a number of great submissions for inclusion into this online Music Education Digest. I hope that you all will find something interesting, new, and useful in every single one of the accepted posts. Please remember that not all submissions are accepted for inclusion into the each Blog Carnival. Details about the Music Education Blog Carnival may be found at the end of the post and at MusTech.Net.

Please continue to promote this carnival by posting link to the carnival on your site or tweeting/buzzing about it! If you missed the opportunity to be in this carnival, please consider submitting a post for the next edition (details at the end of this carnival post).

Great post by Cary Stewart about the current implementation of technology in the classroom and how people still perceive, advertise, and even think about it. “Music and movement are to the software of the mind what oxygen and glucose are to the hardware of the brain.
Travis presents a compelling article about non-traditional ensembles existing with traditional ensembles. “I definitely think the educational climate has changed, and the impact upon our scheduling and ability to retain students in our programs is a challenge – it is constant work with our administration and guidance councilors, a lot of advocacy to parents, and good, sensible PR with the students. That being said, I think educators are starting to look at their large ensembles differently, with an eye and ear (appropriately) towards how they can continue to make their elective ensemble a viable and interesting offering among the school curriculum.”

Janice Tuck presents Neuroscientist Urges Us To Keep Music in Schools. posted at The Music Teachers Blog.

Janice writes about a video where the director of the Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory at Northwestern states: “Music training is not only beneficial for processing music stimuli. We’ve found that years of music training may also improve how sounds are processed for language and emotion.” Included in the post is the embedded video.

Yesterday was one of the longest work days I’ve had in a long time. I started at 6:30 a.m. and returned home at 11:45 p.m. I learned a lot about the true hearts of many young women in that time. Yesterday… I judged royalty.

While a veteran adjudicator of over 15 years, I’ve judged thousands and thousands of art students -particularly in music. Until yesterday, I was never a pageant judge. In the course of one day, I judged five pageants: The 2010 Miss Moraine State, 2010 Miss Mercer County, 2010 Miss Butler County, 2010 Miss Mercer County Outstanding Teen, and 2010 Miss Butler County Outstanding teen. I am glad I had that opportunity as it informed, enlightened, and encouraged me in many ways…

The process of judging is quite is similar, in some aspects, to most of the judging that I’ve done, the main difference in judging the Miss America pageants is that each individual is judged against themselves. In other words, they are compared to their own ideal of what they could be/are -not the ideal of someone elses’. It’s a little confusing before the judges training, but it works very well in this type of instance and I’m now convinced of the validity of using it for this type of pageant.

While I could write a book of what future pageant hopefuls could/should do in their interview from this experience, I wanted to write about how I was personally affected by the over-all candor and souls of these fine young women. The women (and teens) that were competing last night were truly beautiful with regard to every aspect of their being… and that is the heart of the TRUE Miss America contestant.

During the interview process of each “Miss” candidate, from the very onset, it became apparent that the young women we were interviewing had their “acts together” and were thinking and speaking well beyond their years. The contestants were literally asked any question that the five judge panel created and posed. These questions came in the form of current events that happened as early as that morning to historical and philosophical beliefs that have had roots for thousands of years. There were relevant questions about why they chose to wear something to the interview, why they picked their platform, and questions about their lifestyles and the lifestyles of others. In all of the questioning, the overwhelming majority of these young women interviewed remarkably well and with a demeanour well beyond the “average” women of their age.

Many of the contestants remarked that no matter how the pageant turned out, that the experience itself was worth the time, energy, and journey. Many commented about how the interview process of the pageant would help them obtain future jobs by preparing them for conversations with their future employers. Others, when answering questions, answered with such authority and poise that, for a brief moment, it was like watching a press conference. Even the “outstanding teens” interviewed like seasoned and veteran professionals. It was wonderful to behold.

In a society that seems to be filled with many self-serving agendas, it is refreshing to see these young women talk about their lives and hearts as servants: this is particularly evident in their service platforms. On more than one occasion, a contestant would talk about the deep and personal connection to their platform choice. Without going in to much detail, some of these connections were so personal to them that they teared up while talking about them. It was easy to see why many of them choose the platforms that they did -they were deeply connected to them and honestly wanted have some impact on their ability to do something about them. How many young people to today take the time to research these type of pursuits? The amazing thing about these contestants and their platform choices -most of them had been actively working for the betterment of their “cause” for years by raising money and awareness about them. Their “platforms” were not something that they have just invented or claimed for their entry into the pageant -they believed and valued their platform as evidenced by the incredible amount of work that they had already put into them.

Because of the importance that society places on physical beauty and attractiveness, many think that all pageants are simply about physical beauty. The Miss America pageant is different in that regard, physical beauty is just a part of the overall judging process and certainly not the only determining factor -nor the highest with regard to judging point value.

This session details the process of mastering directly from a Two-Track recorder and getting great results in a straight-forward way. The basic two requirements to implement this are a high-quality stereo recorder like the Zoom H4n (the article that I referenced in the podcast/session can be found here) and digital editing software like the open-source product Audacity.

Re-live this session (or experience it for the first time) by taking advantage of the resources listed here. All of these materials are provided for students and educators under a 3.0 Creative Commons License.

Recently, I’ve been working with data-mining as it relates to Twitter. I’ve been experimenting with how to best keep archives of Tweets alive and searchable for future uses -this post is related to that effort.

I’ve pulled the complete list of Twitter Tweets that used the #Hashtag #TIME10 and placed them into HTML format as a Webpage. Other than formatting the Tweets for publication as HTML, nothing has been changed or removed.

The entire HTML format of the 2010 TI:ME Tweet Archive is delimited so that you may easily “select all” on this page and paste it into a program like Microsoft Excel. Once the archive is placed into a spreadsheet-type-of-program you can do all sorts of useful things with it.

Over her shoulder is a small bag containing an iPad, her keys, her lunch, sunglasses, and a baton. She does not have to drag in a milk-crate on wheels filled with materials, papers, tuners, student work that she has graded the night before, a handheld recorder, and a plethora of other teacher tools. Her only tools are a baton and an iPad. She smiles as she enters the building, looking forward to another day with her students. Although she has been teaching 22 years, she still looks forward to coming to school and the many exciting projects that she is working on with her students.”

Updated: 1/30/2010

This list is an important list. This is a reviewed list of interesting and useful MUSIC EDUCATORS to follow on TWITTER. This list was created so that a legitimate list of music educators who implement Twitter could be catalogued and easily found by those looking to “add topic specific” people to follow using the Twitter medium. The majority of this list is compiled of actual Music Educators, Music Professors, and Musicians that are sharing their teaching knowledge through the use of TWITTER.

If you know of any educator or musician that posts frequently via Twitter about music education related topics please let me know by sending me a tweet at @pisanojm (http://twitter.com/pisanojm). Please make sure that you check out the criteria for being included on this list first:

That being stated, I have contacted a few music education bloggers to help me keep this valuable resource available and functioning. I will be posting more about the re-vamp in a future post at http://mustech.net this month.

In the meantime, here is the brief synopsis of the short-term plans with the Music Education Blog Carnival:

1. The Music Education Blog Carnival is NOW ACCEPTING music educatoin and music related submissions for the March 2010 edition! Find out more information about the carnival at the end of this post…

To Submit your article or post for the next Music Education Blog Carnival today -Click this link!

2. I will be hosting the March blog carnival right here on MusTech.Net.

3. There will be three Music Education Blog Carnivals (March, April, and May) to take us to the end of this school-year. Based upon issues we had last year trying to keep the carnival viable over the summer, the carnival will not have an edition in June, July, or August of 2010. It will be back on Sept. 1st, 2010 -pending interest from the community.

You may be asking:

What is a Blog Carnival?

A Blog Carnival is way to extend and/or create a community of bloggers (and readers) that have great things to say about a particular topic… in our case, Music Education. A Blog Carnival functions as a mini-magazine or an online journal that is focused around a particular topic and is
created by experts in the online community that submit their entries for inclusion.

All entries are reviewed, each month, by the host to make sure that they are well-written, timely, topic-related, and of interest to the Blog Carnival’s readership.

Who is allowed to participate in the Music Education Carnival?

Hello all! I hope you all had a great New Year and your School Year is off and running! I will be posting a more detailed note toward the end of this week when I have more time to write, but I wanted to take a minute and let you all know that there are some exciting things coming this year…

1. The Music Education Blog Carnival will be coming back in February!

2. Mustech.net will resume its monthly podcast starting next week.

3. I am working on a number of collaborative and Web 2.0 fronts for inclusion in MusTech.Net this year that will be very exciting for all of the readers (and me!).

4. I will be posting a number of podcasts and live blogging events from my upcoming clinics this year at CBDNA/PCBMA, NJMEA, PMEA and other regional music events.

5. The Monday Morning Mix will continue to provide great information for musicians and educators each and every Monday Morning!

I am hoping to revive and integrate the ongoing Music Education Blog/Web 2.0 world and continue the online discussions that we’ve started over last four years! Stay tuned and get excited!

The Annual Midwest Clinic is more than fun though, it is a multi-faceted experience, a chance to meet-up with old friends and colleagues, a chance to meet new people, a time to learn new things, make plans for the next year, and to experience some of the best music performances available from k-12 bands, universities, and the military. For me, Midwest has been a special part of my life since my first visit in 1993 as a junior in my undergraduate program.

One of my friends posted a question on Facebook about Dominic, the Christmas Donkey, so I decided to see what I could discover about the etiology of our revered old friend… The truth is that the Internet is quite vacuous when concerning information about Dominic as can be seen in this article.

With that introduction, here is my quasi-researched inexactitude of the legend and story behind Dominic (complete with apocryphal footnotes for dissimulation):

Dominic was actually a super-distant cousin to Nestor the donkey, who was, of course, the other “Christmas Donkey” [1], and the “god-donkey” of Spieltoe the donkey [2] (In which -both relations certainly explain the pedigree and eligibility for his deserved title –the “Christmas Donkey”). Additionally, he was the great, great, grand-donkey of good-ole “Number 7″ [3] -another fine donkey (Which, of course-of course, explains Dominic’s perfect answer to his job interviewers at a later date!).

In the end, Dominic’s greatest dream (after that of being the Christmas Donkey) was finally realized when he passed his interview (an interview of a different color indeed) to become the “most famous donkey of all” … He became what he always dreamed of becoming and proved to the world that not only was he, as Lou Monte [4] put it, the “cutest little donkey” Christmas Donkey, but also that he really knew how to “pull” [5] for another, more earthly, type of “king”… and that my friends, “says it all”! [6]

The culmination of this story was chronicled and immortalized in video and available for all to see via YouTube (Press Play in the image to below to be immersed in this, the final, part of his epic story):

I don’t get it…can you please help me understand this brilliant article?
(Spoilers -The Etiological Inexactitude detailed - highlight the area below by selecting it with your mouse…)

First of all this was a complete spoof that was quite fun to make (an inexactitude). Key points of “based-on” fiction in this particular story:

1. Nestor the donkey was was created by Rankin-Bass as a Christmas “stop motion” special in 1977. Nestor was the donkey that Mary rides into Bethlehem.
2. Spieltoe was the donkey that narrated the “Nestor” special and was one of Santa’s donkeys…
3. Nestor’s and Spieldtoe’s true positions within Christmas literature and their ”relationship” to Dominic give him the right to be called a “Christmas Donkey”
4. “Number 7″ was the donkey in “Grizzly Adams” that “hee-hawed” loudly all the time…thus, Nestor’s “answer” in the Budweiser commercial could be justified and expected.
5. “of course-of course” is a reference to another equine, Mr. Ed.
6. The most famous donkey of all..is a play on the “most famous reindeer of all”, Rudolph -another 4-legged animal that was undervalued at the start.
7. “an interview of a different color”…”a horse of a different color”
8. Lou Monte, is the singer that made the Christmas Donkey song famous.
9. “pull for another” is a connection to the Budweiser Clydesdales…
10. ”more earthly type of king” is a reference to Budweiser the “King of Beers”.
12. “says it all” is another reference to an older Budweiser slogan, “When you say Budweiser, you’ve said it all!”
12. Why did I spend time on this ”ridonkulous” fiction? Because.
13. Don’t you have better things to do? Yep. (“Take a read” of the 500+ articles on MusTech.Net and stay-tuned for the 1000s, in my head, not written yet)
14. Have you gone mad? Not yet…
15. Were there any other super-crafty connections to anything else in this story -equine or otherwise? Maybe something to be “REVERE-ed”…

Really, there is no more below here….

END.

The original e-mail content and VIDEO follows directly:

“A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines. United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3500) during a flight. Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for damages caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar.

During his final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was left with no choice other than to create a music video for You Tube exposing their lack of cooperation. The Manager responded : “Good luck with that one, pal”.

So he posted a retaliatory video on You Tube. The video has since
received over 5.5 million hits. United Airlines contacted the musician and attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video. Naturally his response was: “Good luck with that one, pal” .

I have some exciting news for a limited number of ensemble directors. iSchoolBand.Com has granted MusTech.Net a limited number of free 1 year subscriptions to their site for ensemble directors that are avid readers and supporters of MusTech.Net (This is up to a $750.00 value). iSchoolBand has recently left their Beta stage and are now starting the full operational stage of their site. As part of that effort, they have agreed to partner with MusTech.Net and give us a number of free accounts to hand-out to active band, orchestra, and ensemble directors . This is an incredible opportunity for those that have been looking into software like and have been in the “decision process”. This limited time opportunity allows you to try the software for a year for free with no obligations.

iSchoolBand is a web 2.0 program that is a fully hosted social environment and management platform that is customized for the band programs. iSchoolBand is reasonably priced and offers a number of features that would be of interest to any band, orchestra, or ensemble director, including:

Media and Document Library

News Feeds and Commentary

Individual people profiles and group profiles

Group based announcements

Notifications & Alerts

Fully Secure and Private (with the option to have a public front-end)

One of the great things about social networks like iSchoolBand is that they provide a secure and safe platform (with support) for band directors to operate from within. Because this is a closed educational environment, posting videos and/or audio for learning, evaluation, and critique should pass the ”litmus test” with regard to a number of fair-use applications and could go a long way to helping directors utilize their instruction time in an efficient manner (always check copyright policies and applicable laws to be sure).
