Over her shoulder is a small bag containing an iPad, her keys, her lunch, sunglasses, and a baton. She does not have to drag in a milk-crate on wheels filled with materials, papers, tuners, student work that she has graded the night before, a handheld recorder, and a plethora of other teacher tools. Her only tools are a baton and an iPad. She smiles as she enters the building, looking forward to another day with her students. Although she has been teaching 22 years, she still looks forward to coming to school and the many exciting projects that she is working on with her students.”

Updated: 1/30/2010

This list is an important list. This is a reviewed list of interesting and useful MUSIC EDUCATORS to follow on TWITTER. This list was created so that a legitimate list of music educators who implement Twitter could be catalogued and easily found by those looking to “add topic specific” people to follow using the Twitter medium. The majority of this list is compiled of actual Music Educators, Music Professors, and Musicians that are sharing their teaching knowledge through the use of TWITTER.

If you know of any educator or musician that posts frequently via Twitter about music education related topics please let me know by sending me a tweet at @pisanojm (http://twitter.com/pisanojm). Please make sure that you check out the criteria for being included on this list first:

I am officially announcing the rebirth of the Music Education Blog Carnival with this post! The last published edition of the Music Education Blog Carnival was published on May 1st 2009. While it was my intent to continue this non-stop into the foreseeable future, a number of problems arose with my ability to juggle some of the logistics involved with keeping it viable and consequently there was a pause in the carnival.

That being stated, I have contacted a few music education bloggers to help me keep this valuable resource available and functioning. I will be posting more about the re-vamp in a future post at http://mustech.net this month.

In the meantime, here is the brief synopsis of the short-term plans with the Music Education Blog Carnival:

1. The Music Education Blog Carnival is NOW ACCEPTING music educatoin and music related submissions for the March 2010 edition! Find out more information about the carnival at the end of this post…

To Submit your article or post for the next Music Education Blog Carnival today -Click this link!

2. I will be hosting the March blog carnival right here on MusTech.Net.

3. There will be three Music Education Blog Carnivals (March, April, and May) to take us to the end of this school-year. Based upon issues we had last year trying to keep the carnival viable over the summer, the carnival will not have an edition in June, July, or August of 2010. It will be back on Sept. 1st, 2010 -pending interest from the community.

You may be asking:

What is a Blog Carnival?

A Blog Carnival is way to extend and/or create a community of bloggers (and readers) that have great things to say about a particular topic… in our case, Music Education. A Blog Carnival functions as a mini-magazine or an online journal that is focused around a particular topic and is
created by experts in the online community that submit their entries for inclusion.

All entries are reviewed, each month, by the host to make sure that they are well-written, timely, topic-related, and of interest to the Blog Carnival’s readership.

Who is allowed to participate in the Music Education Carnival?

Hello all! I hope you all had a great New Year and your School Year is off and running! I will be posting a more detailed note toward the end of this week when I have more time to write, but I wanted to take a minute and let you all know that there are some exciting things coming this year…

1. The Music Education Blog Carnival will be coming back in February!

2. Mustech.net will resume its monthly podcast starting next week.

3. I am working on a number of collaborative and Web 2.0 fronts for inclusion in MusTech.Net this year that will be very exciting for all of the readers (and me!).

4. I will be posting a number of podcasts and live blogging events from my upcoming clinics this year at CBDNA/PCBMA, NJMEA, PMEA and other regional music events.

5. The Monday Morning Mix will continue to provide great information for musicians and educators each and every Monday Morning!

I am hoping to revive and integrate the ongoing Music Education Blog/Web 2.0 world and continue the online discussions that we’ve started over last four years! Stay tuned and get excited!

The Annual Midwest Clinic is more than fun though, it is a multi-faceted experience, a chance to meet-up with old friends and colleagues, a chance to meet new people, a time to learn new things, make plans for the next year, and to experience some of the best music performances available from k-12 bands, universities, and the military. For me, Midwest has been a special part of my life since my first visit in 1993 as a junior in my undergraduate program.

One of my friends posted a question on Facebook about Dominic, the Christmas Donkey, so I decided to see what I could discover about the etiology of our revered old friend… The truth is that the Internet is quite vacuous when concerning information about Dominic as can be seen in this article.

With that introduction, here is my quasi-researched inexactitude of the legend and story behind Dominic (complete with apocryphal footnotes for dissimulation):

Dominic was actually a super-distant cousin to Nestor the donkey, who was, of course, the other “Christmas Donkey” [1], and the “god-donkey” of Spieltoe the donkey [2] (In which -both relations certainly explain the pedigree and eligibility for his deserved title –the “Christmas Donkey”). Additionally, he was the great, great, grand-donkey of good-ole “Number 7″ [3] -another fine donkey (Which, of course-of course, explains Dominic’s perfect answer to his job interviewers at a later date!).

In the end, Dominic’s greatest dream (after that of being the Christmas Donkey) was finally realized when he passed his interview (an interview of a different color indeed) to become the “most famous donkey of all” … He became what he always dreamed of becoming and proved to the world that not only was he, as Lou Monte [4] put it, the “cutest little donkey” Christmas Donkey, but also that he really knew how to “pull” [5] for another, more earthly, type of “king”… and that my friends, “says it all”! [6]

The culmination of this story was chronicled and immortalized in video and available for all to see via YouTube (Press Play in the image to below to be immersed in this, the final, part of his epic story):

I don’t get it…can you please help me understand this brilliant article?
(Spoilers -The Etiological Inexactitude detailed - highlight the area below by selecting it with your mouse…)

First of all this was a complete spoof that was quite fun to make (an inexactitude). Key points of “based-on” fiction in this particular story:

1. Nestor the donkey was was created by Rankin-Bass as a Christmas “stop motion” special in 1977. Nestor was the donkey that Mary rides into Bethlehem.
2. Spieltoe was the donkey that narrated the “Nestor” special and was one of Santa’s donkeys…
3. Nestor’s and Spieldtoe’s true positions within Christmas literature and their ”relationship” to Dominic give him the right to be called a “Christmas Donkey”
4. “Number 7″ was the donkey in “Grizzly Adams” that “hee-hawed” loudly all the time…thus, Nestor’s “answer” in the Budweiser commercial could be justified and expected.
5. “of course-of course” is a reference to another equine, Mr. Ed.
6. The most famous donkey of all..is a play on the “most famous reindeer of all”, Rudolph -another 4-legged animal that was undervalued at the start.
7. “an interview of a different color”…”a horse of a different color”
8. Lou Monte, is the singer that made the Christmas Donkey song famous.
9. “pull for another” is a connection to the Budweiser Clydesdales…
10. ”more earthly type of king” is a reference to Budweiser the “King of Beers”.
12. “says it all” is another reference to an older Budweiser slogan, “When you say Budweiser, you’ve said it all!”
12. Why did I spend time on this ”ridonkulous” fiction? Because.
13. Don’t you have better things to do? Yep. (“Take a read” of the 500+ articles on MusTech.Net and stay-tuned for the 1000s, in my head, not written yet)
14. Have you gone mad? Not yet…
15. Were there any other super-crafty connections to anything else in this story -equine or otherwise? Maybe something to be “REVERE-ed”…

Really, there is no more below here….

END.

The original e-mail content and VIDEO follows directly:

“A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines. United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3500) during a flight. Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for damages caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar.

During his final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was left with no choice other than to create a music video for You Tube exposing their lack of cooperation. The Manager responded : “Good luck with that one, pal”.

So he posted a retaliatory video on You Tube. The video has since
received over 5.5 million hits. United Airlines contacted the musician and attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video. Naturally his response was: “Good luck with that one, pal” .

I have some exciting news for a limited number of ensemble directors. iSchoolBand.Com has granted MusTech.Net a limited number of free 1 year subscriptions to their site for ensemble directors that are avid readers and supporters of MusTech.Net (This is up to a $750.00 value). iSchoolBand has recently left their Beta stage and are now starting the full operational stage of their site. As part of that effort, they have agreed to partner with MusTech.Net and give us a number of free accounts to hand-out to active band, orchestra, and ensemble directors . This is an incredible opportunity for those that have been looking into software like and have been in the “decision process”. This limited time opportunity allows you to try the software for a year for free with no obligations.

iSchoolBand is a web 2.0 program that is a fully hosted social environment and management platform that is customized for the band programs. iSchoolBand is reasonably priced and offers a number of features that would be of interest to any band, orchestra, or ensemble director, including:

Media and Document Library

News Feeds and Commentary

Individual people profiles and group profiles

Group based announcements

Notifications & Alerts

Fully Secure and Private (with the option to have a public front-end)

One of the great things about social networks like iSchoolBand is that they provide a secure and safe platform (with support) for band directors to operate from within. Because this is a closed educational environment, posting videos and/or audio for learning, evaluation, and critique should pass the ”litmus test” with regard to a number of fair-use applications and could go a long way to helping directors utilize their instruction time in an efficient manner (always check copyright policies and applicable laws to be sure).

I put myself through yet another Microsoft Upgrade Process as an “early adopter” just so that I could understand better what everyone will be experiencing when they choose to upgrade their Microsoft Products (If possible, the best practice is to do a “clean install”). All in all, the Upgrade process went fairly smooth although, it took me much longer than I anticipated and over twice as long as when I upgraded a system from Windows XP to Vista. My Vista Premium Upgrade Play by Play is here:

The two biggest issues that I had in this upgrade were as follows:

1. After running the Microsoft Windows 7 Compatibility Checker, which can be found here (and also on the UPGRADE DVD), I was given a “clean slate”. Upon starting the upgrade process itself I was notified by a more thorough “checker” that “Windows will affect the following features:”

Windows Mail is no longer included in Windows 7 (Not a big deal if you are running Outlook) AND you are able to download the Microsoft Windows Live e-mail program here as an able substitute. The good news is that if you have been using Windows Mail, the upgrade process WILL SAVE all of your current messages and then re-import them into Windows Live Mail when you download and install it. I’ve tested this feature and it DOES work.

A number of my programs were listed as incompatible with the UPGRADE but would work upon un-installing them and re-installing them afterward including: Pinnacle Studio 12, ATI CATALYST Control Center, and iTunes.

2. The biggest issue for me came when I got to 21% at the Expanding Windows Files section. I’ve done enough installations to know when something is working right and it appeared to me that the the Windows 7 installation was STUCK at 21%. I’ve also done enough UPGRADES to realize that if you let the computer “do its thing” and give it enough time -it may still work. After about 30 minutes into the 21%, I began to be concerned that the computer, indeed, had frozen -the only hope was that the mouse still “moved” and the hard drive light was still blinking… so, I looked online to see if anyone else was having the same problem. Sure enough, I found many people having the same issue(s) that I was.

THE FIX: THE “INTERNET WISDOM” GATHERED INDICATES TO WAIT THIS ISSUE OUT! MY SYSTEM FINALLY MOVED ON TO 22% AT ALMOST EXACTLY ONE HOUR FROM THE “STICKING POINT”! WAITING WORKED FOR ME. -Hopefully, it will work for you too…. I know it’s easy to get “antsy” and want to push the re-boot button but, wait a long while before you consider doing so.

It seems as though people have been reporting this issue since the BETA stage (and the same-percentage-error-place on some VISTA installations) and apparently all the kinks have not been worked out yet. Things like this become “deal breakers”, so I hope that some of you will find this and it helps you get through the process! More on this issue here and here.

My advice- if it “freezes” for you around these percentages…grab a coffee and watch a show and come back 30-60 minutes later and check it…still stuck? -grab another coffee…

I’ve worked with many teachers. I’ve been taught by many teachers pre-k through 12th grade, under-graduate, graduate, and throughout my doctoral education-related degree programs. I work with students aspiring to be teachers, student-teachers, cooperating teachers, and their associated administration teams. I’ve been a teacher for most of my adult life myself. Over the years, the observations that I’ve made about the “other side of the classroom” have led me to believe that a number of the teachers that are currently teaching are either doing it for the wrong reasons or have developed such a cynical and jaded attitude to their profession that they probably should consider changing their career path or, at least, -their teaching perspective(s).

One of the RISKS that anyone takes when putting out this kind information is a back-lash from those that have TRULY been forced into strange, odd, and unusual circumstances that have created their own individual situations and/or “plight”. There can be no doubt that there are public records of some school systems that have shown signs of favoritism, nepotism, un-called for bureaucracy, elitism, dis-proportional spending, and special interest lobbying that affect the teachers’ ability to actually “be good or better teachers”. Other than recognizing these and other factors ahead of time as variables that do and could come into play with regard to a small number of teachers’ perspectives, I do not intend to focus on some of the “more legitimate” arguments that might have brought a teacher(s) to these particular perspectives…

When anyone looks at a list like this (including myself), they begin to immediately begin a series of comparisons as to how they are like/not like these points and/or how others they know are like/not like these points. It is always a good exercise to re-evaluate ourselves, our goals, our current state of mind, and our current views about “why we are the way we are” or “why we think the way we do”. There are many articles and lists available that detail the ”traits of good teachers” and thoughts about “what makes a good teacher”. Interestingly enough, I have not come across many articles like the subject of this one -the flip-side of those other lists. After talking about and “bouncing” my list off of a number of current teachers, I’ve decided to go ahead and post this on MusTech.Net to enter it into the body of discussion that surrounds this topic.

There are three quotes that I find particularly inspiring with regard to education and teachers that are appropriate to go along with a post such as this, the first from J.F. Kennedy, the second from William Arthur Ward, and the third from Kathryn Patricia Cross:

“Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation.” -J.F. Kennedy

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” -W. A. Ward

“”The task of the excellent teacher is to stimulate ‘apparently ordinary’ people to unusual effort. The tough problem is not in identifying winners: it is in making winners out of ordinary people.” -K. Patricia Cross

Another stunning and entertaining episode from MusTech.Net that find Darren and Joe somehow talking about Darren pandering for money by playing his guitar outside the broadcast studio! Somewhere in the middle Darren ends up comparing Apples to PCs and suggests that “little black helicopters” are involved in a Google/Bing Conspiracy!

Throughout the mix is a whole bunch of great information that makes this episode one of the best! This episode focuses on Google Wave, characteristics of teachers that might indicate that they should be looking for another career, and microphone techniques used on-air for broadcasting live ensembles.

I’ve been enjoying the BETA of Google Wave for about two days now -it really is a great program with a tremendous amount of potential for usein the educational arena. As part of my own education with regard to using the Google Wave applicaiton, I’ve found a number of useful shortcuts that Google has incorporated into the Google Wave Application. Many of these shortcuts only make sense after you have formed an understanding and basic working knowledge of the Google Wave program itself. This post is a brief synopsis of my Google Wave experience so far and hopefully will help others begin to learn and navigate this new technology better and more easily…

Basic Google Wave Background:

Google Wave is a program that allows real-time collaboration and communication in an extremely flexible and fluid environment. In a sense, Google Wave is like a real-time Wiki program where others can edit things already posted and create new items and links through embedding and external applications. Unlike some other similar programs, you can actually read what everyone is typing in the ”Wave” in real-time and Goolge Wave is both cross-platform and open source. The real power of Google Wave for educators (or others) may very well come with its ability for each “Wave” to be embedded in other Web sites, blogs, and Internet programs.

In one of my experiences with Google Wave I was able to be a part of a shared “Wave” with over 100 people using it at simultaneously. While this was quite chaotic, it did work and did not crash either. This was a first-of-this-kind of experience for me with regard to the number of people accessing this type of program at the same time…very interesting indeed.

Basic Terminology (as far as I can figure out so far):

Wave: An entire log or conversation that is created using Google Wave. A Wave encompasses all of the conversations within the initial topic and is threaded.
Wavelet: A sub conversation within a Wave. There can be many Wavelets within a Wave and are threaded as well.
Blips: Are conversations within a Wavelet and are threaded also.
Extensions -Gadgets and Robots: A gadget is an application such as a Google map or any of the “iGoogle” gadgets that are available that can be executed inside of a Wave: A Robot is an automated “helper” that will automated tasks for you such as changing words (swear words for example) to other words or automatically linking text such as @pisanojm to @pisanojm.

Example (click image to enlarge):

I’ve updated the list of Music Educators using Twitter. In today’s fast moving-and-information-overload society it is very difficult to know who is doing what, who is worth following for news, and where to find better information about things…

Twitter is an amazing service that allows you to to keep abreast of the latest news and information at the fasted speed currently possible (and considering how fast everything moves nowadays -this is really a Herculean feat).

To find the latest Music Education Twitter List updates please visit and bookmark this page on MusTech.Net:
http://mustech.net/musictwitter

I’ve added a http://twillist.com Music Education list on the above page to help folks easily keep track, share, and follow those on the Music Educator’s list. The Twillist.com site features the ability to Re-Tweet, Follow, and subscribe to a cumulative RSS feed of all the Music Educators on the list (among other cool features).

            Enjoy!

I’ve been tweeting and talking about the Zoom H4n for months now. The more I use this device the more I’m convinced it’s the best device in its class on the market today. I recently purchased four of theses devices for use with the Grove City College Music Department and they are in non-stop demand and getting high praise from both faculty and music majors alike.

If you are in the market for a hand-held recorder, the Zoom H4n deserves your attention and is worthy of a GOOD, HARD LOOK! Here is the link to my article, released today, about the H4n in the latest edition of SoundTree’s SoundWaves.

Zoom H4n -The Electronic “Swiss Army Knife” for Audio Recording and More

Please feel free to discuss this device and or others in the comment section below. If you are looking for a recommendation for buying a Zoom H4n Handheld recorder, you have mine.

Computer technology has allowed/enabled us to do many things and certainly has propelled and expanded the knowledgebase of many fields further than all of the collective years before its emergence. Likewise, music technology has astounded and even bedazzled musicians with the power, empowerment, and reach that it has provided to them/us. We now live in a world where the “technology” allows us to skip over the “basics” and many times -do things with no real foundational knowledge except only the most cursory…

Microsoft’s Songsmith is the latest entry into this paradigm of “power without knowledge”…musical knowledge in this case. Songsmith is a software program that allows anyone to compose a song having only the most rudimentary of music skills.
