Varanam Aayiram - Electrifying and entertaining

Music composer Harris Jeyaraj and director Gautham Vasudev Menon share a good rapport between them. The two have come together to work for over 30 songs with almost all of them going on to top the chartbusters. Since 'Minnale' to 'Varanam Aayiram', the two has been able to come up with a mix of catchy melodies, hip-hop and racy romantic numbers which have found a favorable place with the masses.

Joining the list of successful ventures from Harris – Gautham stable is 'Varanam Aayiram'.

Speaking about the audio, Gautham Menon had said, 'Varanam Aayiram' is a tribute to the music my parents made me listen as I grew up, from when I was ten till I reached 17 years. My head is still filled with melodies I listened to during that period and a constant rhythm runs in my system, around which I write stories. The songs compliment those melodies and created by Harris Jeyaraj, who believed in my search for good music.'

Harris provides a constant rhythm all through the album with consistent energy level. The likes of Shruthi Haasan, SPB Charan and Hariharan chipping in for a song are a major highlight of this album. Harris has come out with a retro, hip-hop music, which is sure to go places.

Thamarai has penned all song but for Yethi Yethi, which Na Muthukumar has contributed.

Adiyae Kolluthaey - Krish, Benny Dayal, Shruthi Haasan

A perfect beginning with electrifying guitar that sets up the right memento for the anticipated flick. It is more a kind of a song played at rock band with a touch of melody in the middle. Shruthi Haasan has rendered her voice for the number which has Krish and Benny Dayal at their best.

Shruthi's open-throated vocal as interlude and the additional percussion in the song are a delight to listen to.

Nenjukkul Peidhidum - Hariharan, Devan, Prasanna

It is a soft melody. Providing one a feel of listening to Eric Clapton's number, the song sticks to our heart at the very first time. The soft melody which is laced with romantic lyrics by Thamarai, is very youthful. Though soft, it is very vibrant. Seemingly inspired by pop songs of 1980s, the song has Hariharan stamping his class all through.

Devan and V Prasanna gives him the right company. Thanks to Harris for the composition which has very less instrumentation and more of good lyrics.

Yethi Yethi - Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer, Solar Sai

Quite a different composition from Harris that is jubilant all the way. A youthful number which is sung by a group of friends, presumably in the movie, interestingly has English lyrics inter spread in it at most places. The song has bass guitar, drums combining well with the acoustics. Watch out for the guitar interlude, it is simply amazing. The songster simply rocks here. Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer and Solar Sai excel.

Mundhinam - Naresh Iyer, Prashanthini

A romantic song in which, the lover describes the beauty of his beloved in the most artistic manner. The lyrics are staged in the center. The blending of the guitar and the vocals of Naresh Iyer is the highlight of the song. A feel-good pop number, it is sure to become the craze of youngsters. The husky voice of Prashanthini sounds new.

Om Shanthi Om - Clinton, SPB Charan

A faster version of 'Nenjukkul Peidhidum' number rendered to add up. This time SPB Charan and Clinton renders the song which has right pace sans electrifying instruments. Harris Jeyaraj has given the right western touch to the pacey number but has ensured that the essential melody in it is not lost. The beautiful vocal in the interlude is worth listening to.

Ava Enna - Karthi, V Prasanna

A Gaana number from Harris Jayaraj! A surprise yet true. But the music composer has proved that he too can come up with a Gaana which would make the listeners get up and shake their legs with awe.

Set as a youth describing his romance, the song has everything in it to appease front-benchers, but class written all over it. The voice of Karthik and Prasanna suits the song well. Thamarai's lyrics fit the mood well.

Annul Malae - Sudha Raghunathan

A classical song with Carnatic vocalist Sudha Raghunathan, rendering at her best for the traditional touch. More inspired by 'pathos' numbers of Tamil and Hindi films set in early 1960s, the song is seemingly a fusion of Carnatic and Hindusthani music. With Sudha Raghunthan rendering it with an Anglican accent. No doubt, it is a slow number, but the harmony is striking here.

'Varanam Aayiram' is no doubt one of the best from Harris Jeyaraj and Gautham duo. It is energetic and entertaining. A must listen musical score that is serene even while repeated.

Ayan - The Return of Harris

Winning laurels with his tracks for 'Vaaranam Aayiram', Suriya is back to strike gold with his forthcoming film 'Ayan'. K.V. Anand who won laurels for his debut directorial 'Kana Kandein' is back wielding the megaphone for this film produced by AVM Productions. A commercial entertainer, the auteur seems to have mixed exceptional plotlines. And here comes the most grandiloquent pair of Harris Jayaraj and Suriya who worked magic with 'Kaakha Kaakha', 'Ghajini' and the recent 'Vaaranam Aayiram'.

Remember the most fantastic song of 2008! Yeah, it's none other than 'Nenjukkul Paidhidum' with Hariharan rendering voice for it. Over here, he croons for the same actor but with a different style. Unlike the melodious one, this track is a grand fast moving peppy number that carries an electrifying message for youngsters.

This one is a romantic number with poignant lyrics centering on a young lad and his missy looking out for pure love. Harris Jayaraj has picked up apt singers in Malathi and Harish Raghavendra and his choice doesn't disappoint you. Unforeseen efforts from Malathi are revealing with her intonations and ditto to Harish Raghavendra who is up with the same show as in 'Azhagiya Theeye' of Minnale.

Singer: Devan, Sayonara Philip

Lyricist: Vairamuthu

'Sensuous', 'Sultry' (you can use the best of words for this song) … brimming with such feel, Harris tunes a melody with the beats on Congo drums running all through the rendering. Intonation of Sayonara Philip steals the show while Devan's strides creates a penchant feel amongst the listeners.

'Oru Maalai'- A splendid song that never fades from our memories had Harris and Karthik on the tracks. And again, we've another melody churned by this duo and Vairamuthu's lyrics of a lad's intrinsic feel when in love captivates. This one is sure to rock as a chartbuster. Marvelously orchestrated beats with female vocalism in preludes offers complete enhancement.

Singer: Haricharan, Benny Dayal and Chinmayee

Lyrics: Vairamuthu

'Perky lines and peppy tune' has a big sensation for young hearts. Haricharan, Benny Dayal and Chinmayee deliver with elegance on their quotients. KV Anand's innovative motif and Prabhu's cinematography are sure to turn the song a lot more fantastic on screen.

On the whole, 'Ayan' has a whole lot of mix in spellbinding melodies and mind-boggling peppy numbers. Undoubtedly, Harris is there over the top with the prodigious score for his ducky actor Surya.

Thoranai - Thoranai: Peppy, powerful and popular

Mass numbers for a mass hero. This seems to be the mantra for music composer Mani Sharma as he comes up with songs for the latest Vishal starrer ‘Thoranai’, which are racy and riveting.

Mani Sharma shares a good rapport with Vishal as the two had delivered a musical hit in ‘Malaikottai’ before. Thoranai has songs that include a mass intro one song, a couple of romantic duets and of course racy numbers.

Mani Sharma has opted for few young voices in his album and has given a good output. Ranjith, Naveen, Vijay Yesudas, Janani, Thippu and Saindhavi have crooned for the songs, while Udit Narayan comes up with a beauty in between.

Peppy beats and fast rhythm make up the album. It would be a treasure for die-hard Vishal fans, who would love to see their favourite star’s peppy dance sequences.

Vedi Vedi Saravedi (Ranjith, Naveen) Listen here

What else but for peppy beats and racy chorus when it is the mass introduction song of the hero in the movie. The song is in all praise of the hero penned by Viveka. A shrewd lyrics writer has also used the names of hit Vishal films of the past. Mani Sharma smartly uses percussion instruments including Thavil.

Certain to please Vishal fans, the song flows like a waterfalls. It is progresses at quick pace sure to make fans shake their legs in theatres. Ranjith and Naveen do their job well.

Vaa Chellam (Udita Narayan) Listen here

Interestingly Udit Narayan has been used to render a soft romantic song. Slow to begin with thanks to guitar notes, the song kind of gains momentum as it progresses. Mani Sharma has liberally used the Latino music. Pa Vijay’s lyric is the major highlight of the song. It is rolled with fun and romance.

Udit Narayan’s seems to have consciously sung the number from his belly. It is entertaining thanks to his catchy tune.

Pattucha (Vijay Yesudass, Janani) Listen here

The moment one says Vijay Yesudass, it becomes very obvious that it would be a soft melody with thrust on vocals and less instrumentation. Pattucha rendered by Vijay Yesudass and Janani, lyrics penned by Kabilan, is perhaps the pick of the album. Unlike other numbers, it progresses at steady pace with easy hummable tunes and simple lyrics. Vijay Yesudass reminds us of his father especially in the second part of the number.

Peliccan Paravaigal (Ranjith, Rahul, Rita, Jai) Listen here

Peppy beats, catchy rap and loud music that make our spirits go high. These form the hallmark of the song Peliccan Paravaigal rendered by Ranjith, Rahul, Rita and Jai. Watch out for the veteran Vaali’s lyrics, which are trendy and youthful. The addition rhythm and harmony in the song are impressive. The singers has consciously underplayed their emotions in the song and whispered few lines to give a different feel.

Manjasela Mandakini (Thippu, Sainthavi) Listen here

An album without ‘kuthu’ number is incomplete in Kollywood. Mani Sharma has come out with a song that is ‘fast and furious’. Penned by Pa Vijay, the song has everything to appeal to front-benchers. Thippu’s voice modulation and Sainthavi’s apt diction of lyrics gives it more sheen.

Expectations are sky-high for this long awaited movie, especially from Vikram fans. Here he pairs with Shriya Saran. Produced by Kalaippuli .S.Thanu and directed by Susi Ganesan, this film has music by Devi Sree Prasad (raring to go after his ‘Villu’ success). The lyrics have been penned by Viveka. The audio release function held recently was a grand affair where an adoption of 30 villages and a donation of a marriage hall were also announced along with the audio release! Shot on an expensive budget, this movie

has scenes in Tanzania, Kenya, Italy, Mexico and Switzerland. We have Krishna, Ashish Vidhyarthi, Vivek, Prabu Ganesan and Santhanam essaying roles along with the lead pair. The film is supposed to have a ‘Robin Hood’ feel to it! Let us wait!

Mambo Maamiyo---

A kind of rock and roll meets twist meets Caribbean rhythms –kind of song! Fun, nevertheless! Lovely interludes from the guitars and violins liven up this boisterous duet no end. This is supposed to have been shot in Mexico with Mexican dancers. (the rhythm is testimony) Vikram is quite stylish here. His fans are going to love it.

Ithellaam Dupe---
Vocals: Vikram, Viveka

Well, what can you make of this very, very offbeat crazed-out number? Just freak out, will you? Gives us an amusing glossary of many kinds of words ( especially those to do with wives numbers two and three---etc;) and after a breathless round up of each set, we hear the refrain’ Kandhaswamy dhaan toppu’!! and the fiery electric guitar adds its own ‘dhum’.

Kanthaswamy Theme: Devi Sree Prasad

The rhythms for this song are supposed to be by the ‘Murugan Temple Team’, with Susi Ganesan supplying the ‘kozhi’ sound and Rita the female vocals. A very catchy theme song with lyrics that are so carefully worded that the song may well refer to Lord Muruga too! Again a treat for Vikram fans.

Allegro---
Vocals: Rita

Technically an ‘Allegro’is a classical piece played in a speedy lively manner. This is certainly an explosive dance number which starts off with a gentle soprano bit and gallops from there. With Shriya dancing to this song, (shot in Italy with Italian dancers) it is bound to be a visual feast. Fine effort from Rita. Plenty of sunshine notes from the trumpets and trombones!

Meow Meow—
Vocals: Vikram, Priya Hemesh

A very old ‘mettu’ masked in attractive modern rhythms. Priya is husky and seductive and Vikram has nothing much to essay. The guitars and violin have a field day! Could be a hit right away.

Kanthaswamy( DSP Mix)

A neat remix from Devi Sree Prasad. We have some additional rhythm work here.

En Peru Meenakumari—
Vocals: Malathy
Rap: written and sung by K.I.

A song intented for 100% titillation. With Mumaith Khan gyrating to it what else do you expect? The first line from the old Chandrababu hit ‘Bambara kannale’ keeps weaving in and out of this song sung in her usual robust fashion by Malathy.

Verdict:

Vikram’s USP is that he never takes himself seriously, and it is always reflected in his song sequences. This lively album too has a huge fun quotient attached to it. If the film also manages to walk the tightrope between comedy and action without degenerating into a farce, then we have a sure hit on our hands.

Ayngaran International’s latest offering, this film is director Vishnuvardhan’s first attempt at making a love story. The lead pair-Trisha and Arya-ensures that the movie will be a ‘visual treat’ as promised by the director. This movie is supposed to be about five main characters, and how ‘Sarvam’ or everything changes in their lives under certain circumstances. A little boy by the name Rohan appears to have put in a stellar performance in the movie. Yuvan Shankar Raja, flush with all his success in 2008, has done the honors as far as the music department is concerned. Five songs have been tuned by him. This movie had an music launch at Chennai Citi Centre
