Recording a Great Drum Sound! Part 3

n our last newsletter we wrote about the importance drum tuning for your recording. In this issue we’ll look at working with the mix engineer.

Third step: the Studio!!! Now that you have new drum heads and they’re tuned and you’re in the studio, it’s time to work with the engineer and studio space to achieve your ulimate goal - “a great drum sound”. This is where you not only need to have some ideas but you also need to be able to communicate with the engineer and trust their knowledge of the room. A great drum sound is a combination of many factors, especially the “room” sound and microphone techniques. If you’re looking for a big sound, the placement of your kit in the room is vital. Look for the “sweet spot” where your drums have a nutural full sound that fills the room but without reflections (or delayed echo), usually close to the centre of the room. If you want a tighter, more closely controlled sound look for an area closer to odd shaped walls. This will encourage less reflective sound and keep the drumkit sounding punchy. A balance of the two areas will give you a big sound that is also “in ya face!”.Good studios/engineers have the ability to get great sounds and by selecting the right mics and correct mic placement you can avoid the dreaded “gaffer tape” sound. I suggest you take along a few cd samples of drum sounds you like and ask the engineer to take a listen. This will give the engineer some idea of what you have in mind and will help them decide on any processing or studio techniques that can be used.

Always request a room microphone to capture the ambient sound of the drums in the space. This can be used in the mix to add some great fullness and effects to your drumkit sound. Hope this helps. Stay tuned!

Recording a Great Drum Sound!
I get asked all the time about how to prepare your drum kit for a recording session. There are so many variables to getting a good drum sound I could write a book on the subject. So for the next few newsletters I’ll attempt to offer a range of ideas and advice.
First step: New drum heads!!! I can’t stress enough what a difference a set of new heads will do for your drum sound. Especially on the bass drum and snare drum. These are the two most important sounds of your kit. Get the right drum heads for the job and you’re half way there. Gone are the days of flat, dead sounding drums smothered in reverb. Most good engineers in good studios will want to capture a big, lively and natural sounding drumkit. Getting new drum heads will enhance your kit sound to give it more tone and volume. This will then help it punch through the mix. Pop in anytime and I’ll gladly help you get that drum sound for your recording. All major brands and models in stock!
