Apocalypse in some way could be regarded as a farewell to Austin Peralta, a keyboardist who was part of Flying Lotus‘s group of exemplary contributing musicians, who passed away from pneumonia last November, right before Thundercat was about to start production on Apocalypse. What we get is a more introspective Thundercat, questioning mortality, looking at the metaphysical, in bright and dark ways. Featuring his stellar electric bass arrangements, Apocalypse definitely has that FlyLo stamp but with Thundercat, he incorporates a more jazz funk fusion flair, particularly on “Lotus and the Jondy” where the crashing drum solo and the murmuring of the electric guitar at it’s backdrop is for great listening. On each track, Thundercat‘s spidery bass and falsetto vocals, tote between interesting and downright beautiful shows a musician’s growth. Looking forward to many years of this man’s work.

Apocalypse is available for purchase on the following sites: Ninja Tune, iTunes, and Amazon.

Summer is back. It’s a time for fresh air, love, walks, and new soundtracks. Brooklyn-based duo The Stuyvesants , consisting of music producer Allan Cole (Algorythm) and record collector Darien Birk (Flwrpt) first graced our speakers with their incredible instrumental independently released LP Brooklyn’s Finest back in 2010, which was warmly received. The musically inclined and keen design team followed up with The Finer Things Vol. One and Vol. Two. Both Algorythm and Flwrpt have an incredible ear for loops, subtle changes, and smoothness. On their latest release Refined, you can hear influences from Patrice Rushen, Lonnie Liston Smith, Curtis Mayfield, and Maze. Their sound pays homage to the 70s but transposes that sound into one of their own. Refined features lush chord changes, seamless loops, and a signature flair that will please your eardrums.

In addition to their mood setting instrumentals, The Stuyvesants often collaborate with emcees, vocalists, and musicians alike particularly Fresh Daily on his “In the Stuy.” Check out “Dapper” and “Portlyn” below, then head over to their website to stream Refined.

“Nothing Matters” is so arresting, from Nigerian-German singer, Nneka‘s vocals, that are a perfect match for Tricky‘s abstract productions, to the visual that seem to capture the essence of London’s concrete jungles. Being from South London, I’ll go out on a whim and say one of the estates featured is Angel Town, in Brixton. The grey hues used in the video to show the structured dwellings add to the song’s stark contrast, of nothing mattering, living in a place where they don’t matter, with the woman’s hands gesturing shattered broken hearts. Very powerful. Check out the video below.

False Idols marks Tricky‘s tenth solo album, with this release on his independent label False Idols through !K7 Records. Featured guests include Peter Silberman (of The Antlers), Fifi Rong, and Francesca Belmonte and is available on iTunes.
If there is one couple to be enamored by, that is the union between Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dudley Perkins. These two have been through the fire together and came out on the other side even stronger. Their music is based on spreading a higher consciousness, in what they call “real hood music” not in the typical sense but speaking to real stories of welfare, rape, abortion, and using these subjects in hope to lift and inspire people to be enlightened in gaining control in their lives.

The Lighthouse is a guiding light, allowing people to see through the darkness as the world about us is often filled with dark messages. Laced with future funk and soul, their grooves incorporate classic hip hop elements, that perfectly enhance Dudley‘s raps and Muldrow‘s soulful and edgy vocals. The level in output from these two is incredible. The Lighthouse is available for purchase on their SomeOthaShip Connect label. Head over and get your copy!

This is sad news as his contribution to EWH was a distinct part of their unique in sound. Let’s hope the split is simply a hiatus, rather than a point of no return.

“One the Move” is his debut single featuring Auckland-based soul singer Rachel Fraser in a bass/drum driven groove. The video, directed by Michael Hobbs of I Had Hippy Parents has each musician performing with their eyes close, which could be symbolic of intuition, moving from within, without distraction. A very nice visual piece. Check it out below. Manzanza‘s solo album One is scheduled to release in September of this year on BBE (UK).

So it seems our Pharrell is onto something, and that thing is happy music. Last year, Muphoric Sounds had the pleasure of interviewing Portland-based futuristic-soul producer, singer and songwriter, Natasha Kmeto at the Dropping Gems Showcase last year at Decibel Music Conference in Seattle. Now set to release her sophomore album Crisis, Dropping Gems shared “Idiot Proof” on their Soundcloud. “Idiot Proof” plays on both sides of the fence, skirting on being a full-on dance track with it’s electro pop and synths, as Kmeto’s vocals forcefully claim, “It’s been awhile / I need peace / From all the things I’m supposed to be,” feeding the track with melancholy. Crisis is set to release June 18th on Dropping Gems and is sure to be a great ride!

It’s hard to believe that 8 Miles To Moenart is Tall Black Guy‘s debut album! The man has been steadily creating exemplar beats on the illest collaborations. His debut EP Therapy Chop Sessions, which was inspired by an interactive Facebook Group called The Beat Inn, lead him to win competitions such as ”Dance To The Drummers Beat” and “Red Bull Big Tune,” which received accolades from Giles Peterson and also winning Eric Roberson‘s “Tale of Two Remix Contest.” He was also picked to produce the soundtrack for The Roy Ayers Project, and later collaborated with emcees The Primeridian on Darling Lure.

8 Miles To Moenart takes us on a journey through his homeland, the motor city of Detroit, where his sophisticated sample flips have that tinge of familiarity but are so well done, that a new vibe and groove is created entirely. 8 Miles To Moenart is 8 tracks of featuring a culmination of hip hop with downtempo, electronic, new soul and jazz influences. TBG is an extremely talented producer and needs to be out there in a BIG way!

The bright and shining star at Aftermath, who decided the release date for good kid, m.A.A.d city should fall on October 22nd 2012, is genius! Know that Kendrick Lamar will clean up at all the award shows come 2014. Now with a hot video for single “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe,” arguably one of the hottest tracks on the album, Lamar is set to really dominate as the new West Coast rapper to make change. Continuing from the “Poetic Justice” premise, they attend the funeral of the young woman who got shot, with comedian/actor Mike Epps playing the alcoholic Pastor.
The genesis of The Courtney John Project is a labour of love and an exploration of different musical forms. Future is the debut album from The Courtney John Project and features lead singer Courtney John, who is no stranger to the music industry – having won awards and topped reggae charts. And it should also be noted that both John and producer The Wizard are descendants of reggae royalty (The Wizard is the daughter of the great Beres Hammond and John is his nephew). With that kind of pedigree, it’s no wonder that they partnered with Steven “Lenky” Marsden, Grammy-winning producer who has worked with dancehall acts such as Sean Paul, Wayne Wonder, and Lumidee.

The Courtney John Project subverts reggae music but at the same time preserves its core elements, where the trio incorporate electronic formations to create a new musical genre, that they describe as rootstronic.

Future is positioned as a reggae revival, reminding us of what it was, and what it can become, and from listening to this album, it can certainly become a movement. John‘s lovers rock vocals harken back to some of reggae’s great vocalists, such as Desmond Dekker, Alton Ellis, and of course his uncle Beres. The album exhibits music’s boundless universality, allowing three people to step right out of the box and into a new musical sphere.

With Future hitting the stores today, we were able to catch up with Courtney John to talk about The Project, his career thus far, and what’s in the future for the group. As you read the interview, you can listen to a couple of tracks embedded between questions.

Released on FiWi Music, Future is available at iTunes and Amazon.
Muphoric Sounds: How was The Courtney John Project born?

Courtney John: They were looking for a track to place in the Oliver Stone directed movie Savages. The Wizard and I, were working on a track, well actually the first single “Soul of A Man” and we called in Lenky to do some additional keyboard. The song wasn’t chosen, but while in the studio we realised there was a great energy; one that we had to capture more of. A new sound was being created. It was days later that The Wizard and myself decided to call this sound “Rootstronic”…the band was immediately formed.

MS: Will it be a one-off Project in style and sound?

Courtney John: No, I plan to keep the sound evolving and keep the doors to the Project open to have other musicians and artists be a part of The Courtney John Project creative process.

MS: Why did you call it “The Courtney John Project”?

Courtney John: I decided on the name “The Courtney John Project” because it represents what the process was like initially…I was experimenting with a new sound vocally and I invited these two talented musicians into the process and it seemed like we were working on a project.

MS: Your relationship with The Wizard is not only a musical one, but you are cousins! When did you decide to start making music together? How have you helped each other grow as artists?

Courtney John: Yes, we’re cousins. We started out writing songs together many years ago and it kinda segued into a mentorship vibe when she expressed that she wanted to produce. It’s a good working environment because Wiz brings all that is fresh and new and I bring the years of experience. She gives me the ability to always try to innovate and keep things on the cutting edge. I guide her through a lot business knowledge that she needs…writing techniques and artist development.

MS: With the fusing of various musical styles within The Project, did you see it as a risk in the genre of Reggae music?

Courtney John: Not at all. I think the core audience that listens to reggae is an open-minded audience and I think once anything is done tastefully and with a certain quality, this audience normally reacts in a positive way.

MS: Did being Beres Hammond‘s nephew influence your wanting to become a singer? How has he influenced you through the years? What anecdotal story can you share with us?

Courtney John: Yes, he sure did. We are a very musical family, so my other uncle Boyo, a great vocalist also influenced me. I remember Beres always saying, “Whatever you do, do it good. A record, once it goes out, will always be there for people to hear.”

MS: Your style is very reminiscent of Reggae’s beloved vocalists. Who are your main influences and why?

Courtney John: I’m a big fan of Alton Ellis, I think he taught Jamaican singers how to sing. I’m also a big fan of Delroy Wilson, Slim Smith… I am just a sucker for old-time music and old-time singers.

“Gonna Be Alright”

MS: At the start of your music career, you went by the name of Yogi Bear. What precipitated the change back to Courtney John?

Courtney John: Haha, it was actually Yogi! Yogi was a childhood name given to me by my grandmother Di Di. I wanted to go back to a name that I thought the ladies would like to take home for a hug LOL. Courtney is my first name and John is my middle name, hence the name Courtney John.

MS: From gaining hit records on the reggae charts, to being likened to R. Kelly in your “Lucky Man” video, how would you describe your journey so far? What are some of your greatest lessons?

Courtney John: The journey has been one that only a storybook could describe; It has had its highs and lows, but the character that it has built is worth every moment of the journey. The greatest lesson that I’ve learnt in this business is the importance of family.

MS: How would you describe the musical landscape in Jamaica right now? What do you hope to contribute to it?

Courtney John: I mean, the music I see now is really mimicking people’s lives. With this Project, what we’re trying to do is inspire first, our musicians and peers, to take chances and be creative and then to show our people, that we have a great place that can produce multi-genres.

“Rain Like Gold”

MS: What are your plans for live shows? What do you intend on giving your audience?

Courtney John: Well we’re looking to do Europe first then America. Our aim is to really create an event with the live performance, where it integrates with other areas in the arts, such as fashion, photography, dance, theatre…you name it.

MS: What mainstream artists would you most like to work with?

Courtney John: Bono.

MS: Are there any electronic artists you’re interested in working with?

Courtney John: It would be interesting to hear what Skrillex meets the Rootstronic would sound like. Deadmaus is also a very interesting producer that could work some magic with the movement that we’re on.

MS: What’s next for Courtney?

Courtney John: Traveling the world to get this sound out to people and always writing and making music that I believe in.

MS: What artists are you listening to now?

Courtney John: London Grammar, Aloe Blacc, Raging Fire, James Blake, Lianne La Havas, and this new dope chick called Kat Dahlia.

What’s so lovely to watch about this video is how it blends between black and white to colour at the poignant points of the song, symbolising freedom, happiness and joy as Omar takes a walk with his family, including his twin daughters at the seaside. We simply cannot wait to hear Omar‘s new album The Man in its entirety. In the meantime, the single, which features remixes from Shafiq Husayn and Maddslinki (Zed Bias), and a reworking of Omar’s first his, “There’s Nothing Like This” featuring legendary bassist, Pino Palladino is available on iTunes.
