A regex I never want to have to figure out again:

sed 's/\./\ /1;s/\(\<.\).*\ /\1/'

This SED mess changes bob.smith@example.com into bsmith@example.com

There are probably better ways to do this, but I certainly couldn't find one on the net. It's hard dealing with variable length strings.
