Hilary Hinton “Zig” Ziglar is an amazing American author, salesperson, and motivational speaker. Ziglar was born in Coffee County, Alabama as the tenth of twelve children.

Ziglar eventually became a salesman and worked for several different sales companies. During this time his sales skills grew as did his desire to become a motivational speaker.

In 1970, Ziglar decided to become a full-time motivational speaker. Up until this point he’d gone by the name, Hilary Ziglar, but he decided to call himself “Zig,” as he was referred to by his sales associates (and it stuck).

Ziglar has been very successful, and still travels, taking part in motivational seminars.

7 Must Read Lessons from Motivational Speaker Zig Ziglar:

1. Motivation is Critical

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”

Never underestimate the power of motivation. Every morning I listen to motivational audiobooks, this time of inspiration and motivation gives me the boost to be successful throughout my day. The world is filled with negativity; it’s important that you get your “motivational fix” daily!

2. There Will Always be Little Men

“Little men with little minds and little imaginations go through life in little ruts, smugly resisting all changes which would jar their little worlds.”

There will always be critics, there will always be people saying, “How you can’t, why you can’t, and how you’re going to fail when you try.” There will always be “little men,” and it’s not that they intend to do you harm; they just can’t fathom “big things.” They live in a “little world,” …so never try to force a million dollar idea, in a $10/hour brain, it just won’t fit.

3. Balance is Necessary

“I believe that being successful means having a balance of success stories across the many areas of your life. You can’t truly be considered successful in your business life if your home life is in shambles.”

Success means balance! There are people who have financial success, but who are miserable. There are people who have great family lives, but can’t purchase the basic necessities of life. Success means balance, it means having the best of both worlds, it means having your cake and eating it to. What good is cake if you can’t eat it?

4. Talent Utilization is Key

“It’s not what you’ve got; it’s what you use that makes a difference.”

Use what you got! I will never be a great singer, it’s not in the cards for me, but that’s okay, I can still have everything I “really” want in life. You may not be the smartest, you may not be the tallest, but you are “you,” and there’s not anyone who can be “you,” like you. You must learn to utilize this priceless advantage.

5. Positive Thinking is Certainly Better than Negative Thinking

“Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.”

Positive thinking gives you the advantage; it allows you to see opportunities that you may have otherwise missed. It opens your eyes, so to speak. Negative thinking, of course, does the opposite, it allows you to miss opportunities, and it numbs your ability to perceive the possibilities.

In short, positive thinking is better than negative thinking, besides, no one likes to hang around a negative person. They’re like “dead weight, “dragging everyone down around them. Decide to be positive; lift up all those who enter your domain.

6. Vision is Crucial

“If you don’t see yourself as a winner, then you cannot perform as a winner. You cannot perform in a manner inconsistent with the way you see yourself.”

The me you see, is the me you will be! This is so important, so many people struggle for the simple reason that they are unable to see themselves successful. If you talk to someone who is significantly overweight, chances are you’ll find that they are unable to see themselves “skinny,” they can’t consistently perceive it. Now, I’m not picking on individuals who are overweight… because everyone deals with perception issues! And that’s not to say that you can’t imagine something “for a second,” what I’m saying is that you don’t really believe it’s possible for you, you can’t consistently see it.

“If you can’t see it, you can’t have it.”

You must see it! Your life is exactly what you’ve been able to see and believe up until this point.

7. Success Defined

“Success is the maximum utilization of the ability that you have.”

I love this! Success is not making it to the NFL. Success is not becoming a billionaire. “Success is the maximum utilization of the ability that you have.” Success is being you’re very best; it’s giving your all, to worthy goals. It’s fully utilizing the unique talents and gifts that you have been given.

So the question is, “Are you going to succeed, are you going to give your very best?” If you are, then success will be yours!

Success is not something that you chase, it’s something that you turn into. Success comes from growth; it comes from growing bigger than the problems and obstacles that surround you. Don’t search for success - commit to grow, commit to become, commit to do what you know to do, and you will attract success.

Today I want to talk about seven must-read life lessons from Jim Rohn.

Jim Rohn was an American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker. He’s been an inspiration to many leaders in the personal development field including Tony Robbins, Mark Hansen, Brian Tracy and Jack Canfield.

When Jim was 25 his life was in a rut, he was in debt, and he was uncertain as to how he would get out. During this time in his life he met John Shaoff. Jim joined John’s direct sales organization and began to work on his personal development. By age 31, Jim was a millionaire.

Jim has addressed over 6,000 audiences and 4 million people worldwide. He was the recipient of the 1985 National Speakers Association CPAE Award. Jim is also the author of 17 different books, audio and video programs.

7 Life Lessons from Jim Rohn:

1. You Attract Success

“Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become.”

So few people realize this. Success is not something that you chase, it’s something that you turn into. Success comes from growth; it comes from growing bigger than the problems and obstacles that surround you.

Don’t search for success – commit to grow, commit to become, commit to do what you know to do, and you will attract success.

2. You Must Change

“Work harder on yourself than you do on your job.”

If you want change, you must change! You must work harder on yourself than you work on anything else. The greatest investment you will ever make is in yourself. Don’t invest in the stock market, if you haven’t first invested in yourself. Labor to become a better person; everyday you want to be slightly better than you were the day before.

3. Never Give Up

“How long should you try? Until.”

Never give up. If you just keep at it, eventually you will reach the top. It probably won’t happen in a year, but just imagine what could be achieved if you stayed focused for 20 or 30 years, or longer. When I say never give up, I don’t mean to imply that you should wait around for something to happen; what I’m saying is that you should make something happen.

Success is not that complicated. I like what Jim said, “Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.”

4. Atmosphere is Critical

“You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I around? What are they doing to me? What have they got me reading? What have they got me saying? Where do they have me going? What do they have me thinking? And most important, what do they have me becoming? Then ask yourself the big question: Is that okay? Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.”

Who are you talking to? Who are you listening to? What seeds are being planted into your life? Atmosphere is critical! In order for your life to produce fruit, it must be planted in the right atmosphere. You wouldn’t try to plant tomato seeds in the dessert because it’s not the right atmosphere for a tomato seed to produce. Likewise, don’t try to become successful surrounded by negative people. Create an atmosphere where you can flourish. Learn to guard what you hear; guard what gets planted in your thoughts, so you can become all that you were destined to become.

5. Steady Progress

“Success is steady progress toward one’s personal goals”

My mother use to say, “Slowly but surely.” That’s exactly how your dreams come to pass when you commit to achieve them. Nothing happens overnight, look at anyone who’s successful. It’s taken them years to get there, sometimes decades, don’t think you are any different. If it took them years, don’t be surprised when it takes you years. In other words, manage your expectations, so you don’t get disappointed unnecessarily. Success is possible, but it won’t happen tomorrow, if you just began today.

Remember, success is not a single event; you don’t become a success in a moment. Success comes from moving in the right direction every day.

6. Set Your Sail

“It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind that determines which way we will go.”

Set your sail, or set your mind on what you want to accomplish. It’s not the circumstances of life that determine where you end up, it’s your commitment to arrive at your intended destination that determines your success.

7. Learn to See the Value of Time

“Time is more valuable than money. You can always get more money, but you cannot ever get more time.”

There is nothing more valuable than time. You can sow your time and get anything you want. You can sow your time and get more friends, more money, or better health. Nothing is more priceless than time, so never waste this precious gift. I’ve never met a rich man who didn’t value his time, and I’ve never met a poor man who did.

Learn to see the value of time because with time, anything can be accomplished!

What you have in your life, your level of happiness, or your level of financial prosperity is directly attributable to you. No one else is to blame! You can attempt to blame the economy, the government, your parents, or your spouse, but you will do so to no avail.

You are what you are! What does this mean? This means that there are no excuses in life. What you have in your life, your level of happiness, or your level of financial prosperity is directly attributable to your actions (or lack thereof). No one else is to blame! You can attempt to blame the economy, the government, your parents, or your spouse, but you will do so to no avail.

The only enemy that you have in this life is living on the inside of you; my real enemy is … “in me.”

An Example

If you’re married and you think that you are unhappy with your spouse, it is really just a sign that you are unhappy with yourself. What you think is your frustration with your spouse is only a reflection of your internal frustration and dissatisfaction.

How many people seek to divorce their spouse when the real problem is in them? Their spouse is only a reflection of who they are, and the sole reason they want a divorce is because they unknowingly despise their own reflection in the mirror. Instead of changing what’s in the mirror, they seek to change the mirror.

You see, in this day and age, it’s relatively easy to get a new mirror, but it’s hard to change the person standing in front of the mirror. In other words, when you’ve been “shacking-up” with a certain mentality for 30 years, it’s hard to put that mentality out of your house.

Instead of “changing”, most people decide to get a new mirror. And while that new mirror may shine at first, it will soon lose its glossy appearance, and the true image will be revealed once again…

Don’t get me wrong, …if you happen to be in a dangerous situation, you should get out, but once you get out, you must also come to grips with how you manifested such a situation. If you don’t, you will “re-manifest” the situation. It may be with a different person, they may have a different problem, but you will remain dissatisfied with the image in the mirror until “you change.”

Some people have elected to have no “close mirrors” around them. They don’t even want to see how they look; they just run pass the mirrors! I could write an entire series on this, but you’re not ready for it.

Another Example

We’re talking about the subject “You Are What You Are” because some people think life has short-changed them; they feel that they are due something that they do not currently possess.

If you think you should be driving a Ferrari instead of a Ford, then … you are wrong. You are what you are; the universe, if you will, has not made any mistakes.

If you were ready to handle driving a Ferrari, then that’s exactly what you would be driving.

You see, the only way to reach higher levels of human growth is through change. You must change who you are! So don’t get mad when people say, “you’ve changed.” You’re supposed to change! The only person not changing is the person not growing.

You must change!

Don’t try to change your circumstances, change yourself; don’t try to win the lottery or devise some scheme to gather riches overnight … devise a scheme to change yourself. Put it another way, become the type of person who drives a Ferrari, and you will attract that level of vehicle into your life.

You Are What You Are

Let me repeat, if you’re unhappy with your life, the issue is within “you.” Don’t go searching “outside,” for something that is missing on the “inside.” If you lost your keys in your home, would you go searching for those keys outside? Of course not! What has been lost on the inside can only be found on the inside.

You must not blame, you must change, because nothing changes until “YOU” change, and although that sounds cliché, it is the absolute truth. It is a truth that must be lived and applied if you are to reap its benefits.

In Closing

To sum it all up: “In order to change your life, you must change what you think!” You should have known that’s where I was going with this! I only have one message! I just have a thousand different ways of teaching it, because sometimes it takes hearing it a thousand different ways to fully understand it.

“There is no substitute for changing the way you think.”

A change has to take place in your thoughts. When you change your thinking, you will change your actions, and you will change your life….We are desperate to change our situations, but more often than not, we are “unwilling” to change ourselves. We want the circumstances to change, but what is a circumstance, but a circum-ference around our stance.

Howbeit unpopular, our circumstances will not change until we change, and not a second sooner.

We must change – this is hard because it’s so easy to point the finger and say “that person is the problem,” or “the economy is the problem,” or “my boss is the problem,” but the real problem is the person reading these words right now.

You are responsible for where you are in your life, if you’re not happy, it’s not your mothers fault, it not your wife’s fault, it’s not your husband’s fault, it’s not the President’s fault, it’s not the Republicans or the Democrats fault, it’s your fault! These entities are just different mirrors reflecting yourself.

Don’t get mad, get busy!

Quit blaming and start accepting responsibility for why you are where you are.

If you don’t change, your life won’t change, so the question is, will you change, or will you continue to make excuses? The time is now…

The Hour Cometh and Now Is

Jesus said, “The hour cometh, and now is.” Well excuse me Jesus, because that doesn’t make any sense, … because is the hour coming, …or is it now?

Will this year be any different for you than last year? Is this the year you finally achieve your goals, or are you headed for a repeat of last year? What drastic changes have you made this year that will guarantee your success?

This year will only be as different as your actions are different from last year!

The “differences” in your actions are directly proportional to the change that you will see this year. So what are you doing differently?

Are you meditating daily in order to transform yourself from the inside-out? Are you working significantly harder and seeing greater outputs? Are you producing more? If you’re not, you will most likely repeat last year’s results.

If you experienced minor growth last year, then you can expect to experience minor growth this year. If you received no growth last year, then you can expect to experience no growth this year! It’s that simple.

To have a drastically different year, your actions have to be drastically different!

What Do I Suggest

I suggest you make a list of reasons why this year will be different from last year, then track those reasons weekly.

Tracking your reasons weekly will give you numerous opportunities to measure your progress and make appropriate adjustments. This way, if you fail to reach your goal, you will at least know why. You’ll know that you were capable of success, but you weren’t committed to it. You’ll know that you had the knowledge to succeed; you just didn’t put it into action.

Every Successful Person Has an Extreme Story

If you research successful people they all have extreme stories, even unbelievable stories of how they became a success; stories of triumph and pain, stories of rejection and failure, and yet unparalleled dedication in the midst of those circumstances.

What’s your story? No one’s success story is….“I watched TV three hours a day, played around at work, and the next thing I knew I was a success!” Success takes time, it takes dedication, and it takes a drastic change from what you are currently doing.

Insanity Defined

If you keep on doing what you’ve been doing, then you’re going to keep on getting the results you’ve been getting – to assume otherwise is insane.

To the degree that you change what you’ve been doing is the degree to which you will get different results. Little change, little results, big change, big results.

A Miracle

You’re not going to wake up one day and have a drastically different life, unless you take drastically different actions today. Quit waiting for a miracle and create a miracle. Create a miracle with hard work, create a miracle with focus and with bitter determination; create a miracle with time.

What’s your story?

You need an extreme story to justify your extreme success, so what’s your story? Will it be that you practiced playing the piano ten hours a day, will it be that you spent two hours a day for twenty years conducting research until you became a “top expert” …you need a real story!

In Closing

I believe you have what it takes to make this year a success, the question is, will you consistently get into action? Will you do the unusual, will you do the extreme?

There are two basic forms of meditation. There is meditation where you clear your mind, and there is meditation in which you incubate the desires that you want to manifest. Today I want to talk about the latter; I want to talk about meditating on your desires as a way of manifesting them into reality.

Meditation, I believe, is the secret to success. When I refer to meditation, I mean to ponder on a subject with expectation, or faith. It’s very similar to worrying, except when you meditate, you’re pondering on things that you actually want to occur. When you worry, you, of course, are pondering on ”bad” things; you see them in vivid detail, you experience those situations in your mind; you literally feel the stress.

Meditation is the opposite of worry, instead of imagining the negative, you imagine the positive.

Meditation is used to harbor the vision of what you want, it is the process by which you see what you desire in your imagination and experience it as a “reality” in your mind.

Through meditation you can incubate the vision that you are destined to accomplish. Through meditation you receive ideas, and the faith that will cause you to accomplish that vision.

Nothing is more important than daily meditation when it comes to manifesting your desires. In what spare time you have, I suggest you spend it meditating, spend it seeing yourself the way you want to be. Instead of watching television, dedicate that time to meditation. Go in a quiet room and just take some time to see yourself as a success. Do this everyday and you will begin to change.

To Mutter or to Speak

Another word for meditation is to “mutter,” or to “speak.” Begin to mutter, as well as to speak about how you want your life to be. If you are supposed to be a singer, say “I’m an excellent singer and I will get an excellent singing contract” – you must say it and see it. That’s the beauty of being a human, that is our difference; we have the ability to speak our lives into existence.

What are you saying?

Are you saying that you don’t have any money, are you saying that you can’t afford that, are you saying that the economy is the reason you’re not succeeding, what are you saying! You will have what you say; I suggest you start saying what you want to have.

Go into a quiet room and talk yourself into a “frenzy.” Eventually you will start believing what you are saying. Once you get to a point that you believe it, you will begin to attract it. If you keep on saying “I’m rich,” something inside of you is going to believe it, eventually you will begin to act rich; your actions will then cause you to manifest what you said you already are.

The problem isn’t that people don’t believe this; the problem is that most people are too lazy to do it. They are not committed to the cause; they want success, but lack the requisite discipline. They are too lazy. They want to give birth to something that they are unwilling to be pregnant with. They are unwilling to harbor the baby, to incubate it; instead, they want a miracle, they want it to happen overnight, but nothing worth having ever does.

You have to say it until you see it; blab it and grab it; name it and claim it.

Why am I saying all this, where did this come from? I was in the gym today (even though I have a gym in my home, I also have a gym membership elsewhere) and I noticed something incredible.

What did I notice?

I’ve been a member of this particular gym for about 18 months and here’s what I noticed:

“I noticed that no one has changed!”

At the gym, the place where you go to change, I looked around and I reflected over the last year and a half, and I could hardily believe that “no one had changed.” The people who were slightly overweight, were still slightly overweight, the people who were quite overweight were still quite overweight, after a year and a half. The only individuals who showed some progress were the individuals who were already in amazing shape. The ones who needed to progress the least had progressed the most. I couldn’t help but think of the Scripture that says, “Unto him that has more, more shall be given, and unto him that has not, more shall be taken, even that which he hath”.

What’s the problem?

People are unable to see themselves differently because they are not meditating daily, they may read about meditating, they may even talk to their friends about meditating, but they are not actually meditating. In other words, they’re not changing. Nothing changes until you change. Meditation changes you!

You have to reprogram your mind from the inside-out by talking to yourself. You have to put in the programming; you can’t leave it to the television, the media, society or your friends. You have to tell yourself where you are going, and you have to do it daily. Say it, then see it, your imagination pre-plays your future. Through meditation you can create your future.

What are you imagining?

Are you imagining that your life will be the same this year as it was last year? Are you imagining only a slight improvement? What are you imagining? Notice I didn’t say what are you hoping for, or what are you wishing for? The real question is, what are you imagining? Because what you imagine when you’re going through your day, those thoughts that you have, the ones that you “believe” accurately reflect your future – those are the ones you will act on, and those are the ones that will impact your life, positively or negatively.

Do you believe?

As an example, if you really believe that your income is going to increase from month to month, if you really believe that, then your actions will be different from month to month. You will take actions that are sure to increase your income over the previous month. However, if you believe your income will remain the same, then your actions will remain the same. Put in another way, if your actions do not change from month to month, then you don’t believe your income will change from month to month. Your actions are a measure of your faith!

In Closing

You have to talk to yourself; you must meditate on what you want to have. You don’t need a “list of affirmations,” just begin to affirm what you want in your life, and do it everyday. If you do, you will begin to believe, you will begin to take action, you will begin to change.

I often talk about success as you may know … This particular site is dedicated to teaching success and successful living, so it seems only appropriate to define success. Howbeit a brief explanation, it is also an inspiring and accurate explanation of success.

What is Success?

Success is the gradual realization of a worthy goal; whether that goal is to be a great parent, an amazing wife, or a multi-millionaire.

…the “gradual realization” of a worthy goal is success.

Success is a Decision

Success does not occur when you arrive at your intended destination, success happens when you commit to arriving at the destination.

More than anything else, success is a decision; it’s a knowing that you will arrive where you belong.

It is a solemn commitment to achieve a worthy goal.

Success is Action

Success occurs when you take daily action toward achieving your dreams.

Success is motion, momentum, its achievement. I like what Conrad Hilton said: “Successful people keep moving, they make mistakes, but they don’t quit.”

Are you in action? Are you taking steps everyday that are taking you closer to success, or are you stagnant? Success is measured by the momentum you possess in the direction of your goal.

Success is a Process

Success is a process; it takes time! Success is not limited or restricted to the final achievement of your goal.

Success does not occur overnight. You move from one level, to another level, to another level; you move from an apartment, to a home, to a mansion.

Success Begins in the Imagination

Before you can have success in the physical world, you must have success in your mind. You must believe in success, you must experience success in your imagination, and you must embrace it as already yours.

Success is Cumulative

I’ve not always lived where I live now; I’ve not always driven what I drive now, success is cumulative. There was a time when I lived in a one-bedroom apartment, there was a time when I drove a 1989 Honda Accord LXi without an air conditioner (sweating going down the road).

Success starts small, as the Scripture hath said, “Despise not the day of small beginnings … because thy latter end will greatly increase.”

Success is a Must

You were born to succeed, just as an eagle was born to soar! What kind of life would an eagle live if it could never soar? Success is your birthright; it is your natural state. Don’t be surprised if you’re uncomfortable being a failure, it’s unnatural to who you really are.

Education

Success comes from education; I’m not referring to schooling, but the consistent application of wisdom brings success.

Never Brag About Your Success

Success does not require you to brag, Wallace D. Wattles said “True success is never boastful” … when you see someone boastful it’s usually someone who is very doubtful and afraid.

There’s no need to be brag about your success, success produces its own rewards.

Are You Succeeding

We’ve just defined success. Are you succeeding? Are you committed to achieving a worthy goal? Have you made the decision? Are you in action? Do you understand the cumulative process of success? Do you realize that success is a must?

Today I want to talk about doing a 14-day Challenge. You may be asking yourself, “What the heck’s a 14-day Challenge?”

A 14-day Challenge is a challenge where you perform a task that you’ve been “wanting” to perform, such as workout, or meditate … for 14 days in a row.

Why do the challenge?

The 14-day challenge allows you the freedom to commit to a task for 14 days (to see how it impacts your life), without the pressure of thinking you must continue the task forever.

After you’ve completed the 14-day challenge you can then evaluate how you should proceed with the task thereafter.

As an example, if you’ve meditated for 14-days in a row, you can then look back and see what positive impacts it had on your life.

If you liked the change, then you should continue to perform the task in some capacity; if you didn’t like the impact of the task, you don’t have to continue performing the task.

Another Example

Think you want a dog, try it for 14 days. Think you’re ready for kids; borrow someone else’s kids for 14 days, you’ll find out if you’re ready.

Not too long ago someone gave us a dog named “Bananas.” I warned the previous owner that we may give the dog back after 14 days depending on whether we liked the experience of having a dog.

To make a long-story short, we ended-up giving the dog back … and we were grateful that we did the 14-day Challenge!

If we had purchased a dog, the process of finding a new dog owner would have been a lot more complicated than returning “Bananas” to her previous owner … who knew that we might return her.

Why 14 days?

It’s two weeks … it’s enough time for you to fully experience the task, but not so much time that you can’t commit to performing the task.

What should I use the 14-day Challenge for…

Working-out, daily meditation … whatever you want to try (as long as it’s not illegal or immoral).

Don’t think about doing the task “forever,” just commit to 14 days. You can do anything for 14 days.

Document Your Results

Write down your results. You should have a journal where you document your thoughts. Write down what you experienced during your 14-day Challenge in that journal. If you don’t have a journal, purchase one.

[Purchase a nice leather-bound journal to document your ideas, never put million dollar ideas in a twenty-five cents notebook. Dignify your thoughts!]

Anyway, back to the 14 day challenge!

Decide what changes you want to see in your life … then commit to doing it for 14 days; you will be grateful that you did.

That’s all for now, be sure to start your challenge today!

Without a mission for your life, you will probably just wander through life (like Alice wandered through Wonderland); uncertain of your purpose. Without a mission you won’t be able to accomplish all that you are capable of accomplishing.

I was talking with my editor (via e-mail) a few weeks ago and she mentioned a particular exercise that I want to discuss today.

The exercise is writing your life’s mission statement in eight words or less. This is an exercise that I believe every successful person must do!

Hopefully after reading this very brief article, you will write your own mission statement.

Why do you need a mission statement?

Without a mission for your life, you will probably just wander through life (like Alice wandered through Wonderland); uncertain of your purpose.

Without a mission you won’t be able to accomplish all that you are capable of accomplishing.

Why eight words?

Too few words would not allow you to fully express your mission; too many words and your mission would begin to lose focus. Focus is always critical. I managed to write my initial mission statement in seven words…

Writing your mission statement in eight words or less will provide you with a sense of focus.

Everything you do in life should center on your life’s mission, those eight words.

You Must Have a Mission

What’s your mission? What’s your purpose? Try to write it now.

Here’s my mission statement:

[My mission is to ] “Inspire Others to Succeed with Practical Advice”

Do you have to use eight words or less?

Well… “eight” is really just symbolic for “not using too many words.” If a takes you another word of two to get it right, go ahead and add a few more words; just don’t get too “carried away” …

If I could use more words to describe my mission, I would say:

[My mission is to] “Inspire Others to Prosper and Succeed with Practical Advice”

This means that every article I write should inspire people to prosper and succeed with practical advice.

This means that I should motivate people to prosper and succeed in my daily conversations. This is my mission, this is who I am. This is what I was born to do; this is what I must do.

Don’t know your purpose?

Don’t be concerned if you’re not certain what your mission is yet. Read the article I wrote on “Discovering Your Life’s Purpose” for more help.

Additionally, your mission statement may change as you discover yourself more and more, but start with something. Just write what you believe your mission may be … based on your current talents and likes.

Focus

You need focus in your life; you need clarity, a sense of intention, a sense of purpose, in order to make significant progress.

What do people think of when they think of you? When I think of Wal-Mart, I think of low prices, when I think of Donald Trump, I think of real estate, when I think of Bill Gates, I think of computers. What’s your difference, write it out.

Every successful person has a mission, and the more people affected by your mission, the more successful you will be.

Every person has a mission and every person has an audience

When you find your mission, you will discover your audience. If your mission is to encourage, then your audience is the disheartened. If your mission is to motivate, then your audience is those looking for inspiration.

Learn your mission and find your audience today, your success depends on it.

Paris Hilton is an American socialite, heiress, media personality, model, singer, author, fashion designer and actress. Paris is best known for her appearance on the television series “The Simple Life.” Paris is also the granddaughter of Conrad Hilton, the founder of the Hilton Hotel chain.

We would be arrogant to assume that there wasn’t a great deal to learn from someone who has become such a success (despite her downfalls).

Today I want to discuss nine success lessons that you can learn from the socialite Paris Hilton. Be sure to take notes…

9 Success Lessons from Paris Hilton:

1. Don’t Blend In

“The only rule is don’t be boring and dress ‘cute’ wherever you go. Life is too short to blend in.”

Everyone’s born an original, but most die copies. Learn to stand out, to be different, unique, and original; that’s the way you were born. Blending-in is not a good thing! Live your life true to who you are! But, you must learn to do this without compromising your values or your standards (assuming that you have values and standards…).

2. Confidence is Critical

“I think it’s important … to be confident. Believe in yourself, and … everybody’s hot.”

The poem is true, “If you think you’re out-classed, you are, you have to think high to rise, you must be sure of yourself, before you can ever win a prize.” You must believe in “you” before anybody else will; you must be the first partaker of the gospel that you preach. You must be the first to sign-up for your fan club.

3. Action is Crucial

“I don’t really think, I just walk.”

I’m not suggesting that you don’t think, however I am suggesting that you don’t… “just think.” Never dream when you should be working. The greater your success, the greater the action required. Are you in action, are you walking?

4. Market Your Abilities

“It will work. I am a marketing genius.”

Don’t laugh, it’s true…She really is a marketing genius, and she’s made herself extremely marketable. You can be the most talented person in the world, but if no one knows it, what good does it do. Labor to understand marketing, supply and demand, your niche, your audience…

5. The Imagination is Powerful

“I’d imagine my wedding as a fairy tale… huge, beautiful and white.”

Albert Einstein said, “The imagination is more important than knowledge.” Learn to imagine the life you want to live. Don’t leave space in your mind to ponder on negative situations that may occur. Paris has imagined herself having a huge, beautiful and white wedding; I’m sure that’s exactly what she’ll have.

6. The World Is a Friendly Place

“That’s hot!”

Learn to see everything as “hot” or amazing. Albert Einstein said the greatest decision you will ever make is your decision to view the universe as friendly or hostile.

There is something positive to be said about every situation and circumstance. Learn to recognize the many blessings that surround you. That’s hot!

7. Celebrate Everyday

“The way I see it, you should live everyday like it’s your birthday”

Everyday should be a celebration! Create a lifestyle where you’re happy all the time. Learn what you like, surround yourself with things that make you happy. If you like writing with a $2,000 Mont Blanc pen, then that’s what you should write with. Create an environment everyday that you’re excited about.

8. Work Hard and Follow Your Heart

“I’ve made all my money on my own without my family and I work very hard, … Just listening to my father . . . So just basically following that and following my heart.”

Hard work, there’s nothing like some old fashioned hard work to help you along the way. Nothing great has ever been achieved without hard work.

Additionally, learn to follow your heart. Listen to what you’re heart is saying.

Don’t follow your feelings; they will deceive you more often then not. Follow your heart, control your feelings.

Never let your feelings, get in the way of your future.

9. Make a Name for Yourself

“I don’t want to be known as the granddaughter of the Hiltons. I want to be known as Paris.”

You have one life to live, what are you going to do with it. I suggest you make a name for yourself, why not you, why not now!

In Closing

… here’s my “personal favorite” quote from Paris Hilton:

“Wal-mart… do they like make walls there?”

Got to love it!

Is it possible to be addicted to Self Development? Not only is it possible, it’s practically an epidemic in our society. People are addicted to self-help books, self-help seminars, and self-help web sites.

How do you know if you’re addicted to self-help?

Addicts are individuals who are ever-learning, but never really growing. They go to all the seminars, they read all the books, they listen to all the tapes, but their lives are not indicative of the information they are consuming. They are a walking contradiction.

They use self-help material like a drug addict uses drugs. The “knowledge” of how to succeed is the actual narcotic. They see no need to actually follow through with the instructions. The information itself is a sufficient intoxication to temporarily relieve their minds from their unfulfilled and boring lives.

Every few days these addicts need a “hit,” or they need to “shoot up” on self-help material to keep from being down. Some even go from self-help seminar, to self-help seminar; they buy all the books, listen to all the tapes, but their lives never change. They’re an addict, their addicted to self-help, and even unaware.

If you’ve seen the move “The Matrix,” then you understand how this self-help drug works. It constantly steals the life from the “user;” at the same time giving the impression of an increasing life.

How do you break the addiction to self development?

You break the self development addiction by getting into action, by doing the words you hear.

If you’re an addict you may need to take a break from self development for a little while. You may need to say, “I’m not going to listen to anymore self-help information for the next few weeks, I’m just going to implement what I’ve learned over the last few years.” In the time that you previously dedicated to learning, dedicate that time to getting into action!

God forbid you live a life of learning and not doing. Get out there and make some mistakes, learn some lessons that you can only learn in action, let go of fear, and make it happen!

Additionally

Be concerned of any teacher who’s not asking you these questions, any teacher who’s not demanding some level of results. Don’t spend your time with individuals who are only occupied with taking “your time,” but not consumed with your personal progress.

Is Self Development Bad?

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with self development? I listen to self development audio books every single day (it’s one of the most important things I do), but I’m also applying what I’m learning and thereby growing daily.

I used to be an addict, but I broke free from my addiction; this is why I can help others who are addicted.

No Addicts Reading Mr. Self Development.com

I don’t want any long-term addicts reading this Web site; I want this site to be read by “doers.” People who come and learn, people who get inspired and then who get into action. People who read for inspiration, and motivation, and then who go out and fulfill their dreams…

After reading this site for several months, I would hope that something has changed in your life. I would hope that you’ve put these words into action and received some results.

Don’t just read this site and not get it into action; you’ll only deceive yourself. This information is intended to be life-changing. It’s intended to cause shifts in your consciousness, changing you from the inside-out, but if you never adhere to it, if you never implement it, what good can it do.

In Closing

Get into action today, don’t just be a hearer, don’t just play on the sideline, go out there and make it happen. Start today, be the change you want to see.

Today I want to expound on seven powerful success secrets from Timothy Ferriss the American author and public speaker. As you may know, Timothy Ferriss published “The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich,” which was a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestseller.

So let’s get to it….

7 Success Secrets from Timothy Ferriss (expounded on by Mr. Self Development):

1. Believe That You Will Succeed

“The reason most people don’t succeed is because they don’t believe they will succeed.”

When you don’t believe you’re going to succeed, you won’t take the actions requisite for success. Your actions will always follow your beliefs. If (in your heart) you believe failure is inevitable, then you will consequently take actions that will create the failure you believe you deserve. The opposite of this is also true, if you believe you will succeed, you will take actions that will guarantee your success. Henry Ford said it best: “Whether you think you can, or can’t – you’re right.”

2. Have a Dream and a Plan

“Dreamlining is so named because it applies timelines to what most would consider dreams. I’m not a big believer in long-term planning and far-off goals. In fact, I generally set 3-month and 6-month dreamlines. The variables change too much and in-the-future distance becomes an excuse for postponing action.”

A plan in the hand is better than 10 dreams in a bush. You must have an actionable short-term plan, without one, you will fail; and you can quote me.

Your dreams have to have a plan, and the plan has to be “worked” daily. “Work” the heck out of your plan! It’s the only way.

3. Be Very Selective in Your Task Selection

“Being selective—doing less—is the path of the productive. Focus on the important few and ignore the rest. Lack of time is actually lack of priorities.”

You can do anything, but not everything. Focus on the critical tasks that provide you with the greatest results. Ask yourself daily, “What’s the one task that will make this day worthwhile?” Then be sure to get that task done.

Learn to differentiate between being busy and being productive; time is the most precious gift you have, don’t waste it.

4. Do the Uncomfortable Daily

“The most important actions are never comfortable.”

Growth is never comfortable, if you’re comfortable, you’re not growing! You will only succeed to the level you “grow.” You will only grow to the level you are willing to do the uncomfortable.

What you don’t want to do is often what you need to do right now, so go and do it; you can always make corrections along the way.

As I always say, tomorrow never comes; resolve to take that uncomfortable step today!

5. Act Outside the Box

“It isn’t enough to think outside the box. Thinking is passive. Get used to acting outside the box.”

We often talk about “thinking” outside the box, but successful people don’t just think outside the box, they act outside the box. They do the unconventional; they’re usually the first at something, learn to chart your own course.

Timothy Ferriss said, “The common-sense rules of the ‘real world’ are a fragile collection of socially reinforced illusions.” Don’t live your life based on socially created illusions; recognize that anything’s possible.

6. Ask, “Why Not You, Why Not Now!”

“That’s precisely the question everyone should be asking—why the hell not? – Why not you, why not now…”

I like what Timothy said in his book, The Four Hour Work Week, he said, “The fishing is best where the fewest go, and the collective insecurity of the world makes it easy for people to hit home runs while everyone else is aiming for base hits. There is just less competition for bigger goals. If you are insecure, guess what? The rest of the world is, too. Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think.”

Why not you, why not now!

7. Make it Happen

“You are capable of so much more than you give yourself credit for.”

If your life depended on it, could you succeed? If you had five years to succeed or die, could you do it? I think you could…the reality is, you are so much more than what you have become…there are dimensions in you that have yet to be discovered…realms that have yet to be seen…just beyond the veil of your ignorance is the power to change the world…to be the difference…to make a change…can you grasp it…I think you can!

Today I want to talk about goal achievement! We’ve just entered into a new year, and many people are making their New Year’s Resolutions.

The question is, how will this year be different from last year. How will you achieve this year, what you failed to achieve in 2009? Why will this year be different? How will you achieve your goals in 2010?

My wife and I sat down recently and we discussed our goals for 2010. Our discussion was very brief this year in comparison to previous years. In the past, we’ve listed a multiplicity of things that we wanted to accomplish in the upcoming year, but we didn’t do that this year.

Focus

This year we only listed two goals each; we both listed a primary and a secondary goal. The primary goal is the goal that would single-handedly make 2010 a success in our minds; if nothing else was achieved. In other words, if we achieve the primary goal, the year will have been considered a success. The secondary goal is a “nice to have” goal; it’s a goal that if accomplished, …it would be nice.

The reason my wife and I decided to only have two goals in 2010 is because we realize that “focus” is critical to goal achievement.

I recommend that you “focus” your goals as well, if you wish to accomplish your goals in 2010. In other words, only have one or two goals that you desire to accomplish.

My Goals for 2010

My primary goal for 2010 is to grow mrselfdevelopment.com’s readership, I have a specific number that I am targeting for.

My secondary goal for 2010 is to lose 9 pounds. My weight this morning was 169 pounds.

Going on Record

I want to go on record and say that by December 31, 2010, I will be 160 pounds. (In case you’re wondering I am 5 foot 10 inches.)

Now this may seem a little thin, but this is an “ideal” healthy weight for me, and it’s a weight in which my abdominal muscles are clearly visible; so it’s a relatively important health goal for me for 2010.

More Important Goals

You may be asking, why wouldn’t I have more “important” goals, such as to improve my marriage, or my spiritual life; here’s my answer: I’m not saying that my marriage can’t get any better, but it’s very good, and is getting better daily, there’s no need for me to make it a primary focus in 2010 (I already have a good system in place). As far as my spiritual life, I have a goal of meditating daily in 2010 as part of my daily routine (just like brushing my teeth), so I didn’t include it as one of my major goals.

Goal Achievement

Okay, so let’s talk about goal achievement, how to get from point A to point B. I’ll use my example of losing 9 pounds in 2010. How do I get there?

Here’s one way of looking at it

This is what I know: I know that when I get to 160lbs, I will be a different person compared to who I am at 169 pounds. My name won’t change, but my consciousness will, my thoughts will. You see, a person not at their ideal weight is not the same as a person who has achieved their ideal weight; there is something different in there consciousness. The person at their ideal weight makes better food choices, works out a little harder, and better recognizes the benefits of a healthier lifestyle; they are a slightly different person, and it shows on the outside.

In order for me to achieve my ideal weight of being 160 pounds, I will have to adopt the mentality of a person at their “ideal” or perfect weight. If I can sustain the thoughts of a person at their ideal weight, then I can be at my ideal weight.

My life and everything in it consists of the thoughts that I hold in my mind. James Allen said “man is mind.” In order to change the man you must change the mind.

It would be foolish to pursue a goal without first planning to change your mind. Your current mindset is creating what you already are. To experience a different reality, your mind has to be altered to fit that new reality. The sign that your mind needs to be altered is your “current reality,” if your mind was already where it needed to be, you would be experiencing what you desire to experience presently.

Another Example

Let’s say you want to experience financial abundance in 2010. Is it possible? Yes it’s possible, but only if you can adopt the mindset of a prosperous person.

Let’s take real estate entrepreneur and billionaire Donald Trump. What would happen if we gave you his consciousness, and if we gave him your consciousness? If Donald’s consciousness was placed in your body, the first thing that would probably happen is that he would freak-out! He would go and check his bank account balance and see $10,000 and probably faint. After he regained his consciousness, he would soon begin to take steps to change his current reality to reflect his consciousness. He would start making business deals and before long he would achieve what he had before. Not too long ago, Donald Trump did lose his fortune, but because he never lost his consciousness he was able to gain his fortune back.

…And if you had Donald’s fortune, what do you think would happen. In short, you would probably “blow-it,” if you haven’t yet achieved a billionaire’s consciousness.

The Secret is “Daily Meditation”

So how do you achieve the consciousness requisite to accomplish your goals? You have to take time daily to see yourself the way you want to be. This is why daily meditation is so crucial to success. If you can’t get in harmony with that level of consciousness… If you can’t go there first in your imagination, and really feel what it would be like to handle wealth, or to be at your ideal weight, or make important decisions. If that is never a reality in your mind, how could you ever achieve it? You will always be out of sync with that reality!

Natural Visualizers

Granted some people are natural “visualizers,” they don’t need to set apart a special time to mediate, they just continually see what they want to be, and they achieve it, but most people aren’t that way. Most people must consciously reprogram their minds for success. They must make the choice to live in a different reality today, by purposely changing their thoughts.

You Can Do It Too

The truth is, if someone else can achieve the goal… so can you, but you must first go there in your mind, before you can go there in reality. To be 160 pounds in reality, I must first experience 160 pounds in my mind, through daily contemplation and meditation. If I go there in my mind, the actions will come naturally, it will feel unnatural to not be at my ideal weight.

So…

Will you achieve your goal in 2010? It’s certainly possible, don’t be caught sitting around saying it can’t be done!

What you’re saying can’t be done by “you” in 2010, will be done by someone else. I say if they can do it, so can you, so start meditating, see yourself already there, make it happen…then e-mail me to tell me all about it.

Greetings and Happy Holidays to the readers of the site! I rarely give personal updates, but today I wanted to say thank you for reading mrselfdevelopment.com; I also wanted to give you a quick update.

This has been another great year, although the best is yet to come.

I have a host of “life-changing topics” that I’m eager to write about in 2010. I really desire to make this “success thing” very simple and plain. I want this site to be a beacon for anyone who’s looking to succeed.

I’m excited, I know 2010 will be a year of change and new direction…My wife and I will sit down on New Year’s Eve (as we always do) and make our plans for the upcoming year. One of my goals for 2010 is to make a greater and more relevant impact in the lives of the readers of this site. I truly cherish every reader and I’m grateful to each subscriber. I think the people who subscribe to this site are very special individuals who are going somewhere in life. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be subscribed to this site, they couldn’t handle it. The subscription alone is a sign.

Christmas Present

I attached a picture of my “Christmas present” from my wife this year. It’s the new BMW Z4 (hardtop convertible), it’s pretty amazing! It’s Crimson Red on the outside and Ivory White on the inside. It certainly put a smile on my face when I saw it. If you’re looking for another car, I recommend you pick one up.

Houston, Texas

My wife and I flew to Houston, Texas for the holidays (my wife’s parents live in Houston); we’ll be in Houston for a few days before returning to Atlanta; we always have a blast in Houston!

Well that’s all for now, Happy Holidays and talk with you soon!

Update: If you’re subscribed to this site, please feel free to send me an e-mail letting me know who you are, I would love to hear from you!

Have you ever wondered why you have bad habits? Why do you do what you don’t want to do? Such as overspend, overeat, smoke cigarettes, or any other bad habit. Today I want to briefly discuss why we have these bad habits and how we can break these bad habits starting today.

Let’s get right to it…

We use “bad habits” the way drug users use drugs. The bad habit takes our mind away from our boring lives and relieves our stress. The habit creates a reality that doesn’t really exist, a brief “utopia,” where things are just the way we want them to be.

A Parable

In the movie “The Matrix” the world has been taken over by machines. The earth is crumbling and falling apart, but no one is aware of it. The machines have taken over the minds of the people and they are unable to realize that their world is in shambles; everything appears to be in balance. This is how your bad habits work, the habit takes over your mind and creates a reality that doesn’t really exist…while your life falls apart.

Your mind allows this because the pain of your current reality is unbearable, the illusion of the matrix makes living much easier.

A Test

If you smoke cigarettes, decide not to smoke a cigarette for the next week, if you overeat regularly, decide not to overeat for the next week, whatever your habit, decide not to do it for the next seven days. If you make this decision, you will probably become somewhat depressed after you’ve stopped your habit for a few days.

The reason for this depression is because your mind doesn’t know how to deal with your current reality without the numbing effect of your bad habit, it’s the mind’s drug, it helps your mind cope with an unsatisfying reality.

An Example

If you go to the dentist to get a tooth removed, they will give you drugs. The drugs help you escape the pain of reality. The drugs take your mind away from the pain and help you cope with your current situation; just like your habit helps you cope with a mundane, stress-filled life.

In short, we use “bad habits” to deal with our stress and to briefly alleviate our boredom.

…and the longer we have the habit, the more of the habit we need to numb the pain that we are dealing with. If we are unable to break free from the habit, the habit will most likely cause us great harm and embarrassment.

How to break a “Bad Habit” in three steps:

Step 1: You will never break the habit until you make the decision to break the habit.

You must have very compelling reasons as to why you want the habit to end. I strongly suggest you write these reasons down. I also suggest you consider the potential consequences that you might face if the habit doesn’t end, these are usually good reasons to quit the habit (e.g. If I keep on smoking cigarettes I may develop lung cancer and die prematurely).

If you can’t come up with a good reason to stop, you won’t stop, plain and simple.

Step 2: Deal with the dissatisfaction and boredom in your life.

A major reason people develop bad habits is to cope with a dissatisfying and boring life. Instead of growing and becoming all that they are capable of becoming, they settle. This settling causes dissatisfaction. The dissatisfaction is temporarily satisfied by the bad habit. However, remember the matrix, while the bad habit (or drug) makes you feel like everything is fine, in the process it is tearing your world apart.

The solution is to face the pain of your reality and create your life the way you want it to be. It’s easy to remain on the “drug,” but the courageous thing to do is to face your reality and become the “you” …you were destined to be.

Step 3: Find a healthy way to relieve your stress.

Even if you’re living an exciting life where you’re accomplishing everything you desire to accomplish you may still struggle with a habit if your life is unbalanced.

In this case, the habit serves to give you the temporary illusion that you’re living a balanced life.

As an example: “You’re stressed out, so you overeat; when you overeat, you feel great!”

The food has given you a temporary sensation that everything is great and stress-free in your life. However, shortly after you finish eating that “chocolate cake and ice cream,” the pain of reality sets in (i.e. your life is not the way you want it to be); you must overeat again to re-gain the sense of happiness and balance.

The solution is to find a way (or create a life) where you deal with your stress on a daily basis in a healthy way. If you don’t “purpose” to deal with your stress in a healthy way, you will deal with your stress in an unhealthy way. The stress is “real,” and it has to be dealt with, I suggest you deal with it properly.

For me, daily prayer and meditation allows me to relieve my stress, it puts my life in balance, in perspective; it’s where I find my relevance. You must find a way to deal with your stress.

In Closing

If you can properly deal with the stress of life, if you can take-it-on and handle it, and if you can work towards creating the life you want, you won’t need the bad habit. You’ll discard the bad habit like a dirty rag; you’ll have no use for it.

Just like you’re not tempted to take “Tylenol” when you don’t have a headache, you won’t be tempted to perform a bad habit when you’re happy and living a balanced life!

This article contains six life-changing rules that I’ve discovered…rules that I like to teach; reading all six rules will certainly inspire you to live a more focused and productive life.

The 6 Life-Changing Rules:

1. The Rule of Double

The “Rule of Double” states that succeeding at any given task is at least “twice as hard” as you think.

The reason many people don’t succeed is because they underestimate the amount of work requisite for success. Success usually requires at least twice as much work as you think. Oftentimes it requires three, four or even five times the amount of work.

The “Rule of Double” basically says that success is not as easy as it looks. This rule is a reminder that the price of success in high. Maya Angelou said, “If the grass looks greener on the other side, you can bet the water bill is higher.”

2. The Rule of a Successful Day

This rule states that, “If you want to have a successful day, you must plan your day.”

Planned days are productive days! Unplanned days cause your weaknesses to flourish; weaknesses such as procrastination or even overeating are linked to unplanned days.

I challenge you to plan everyday! Everyday write down three or four important tasks that you want to accomplish, and watch how your productivity levels increase.

Wallace D. Wattles said, “Everyday is either a success or a failure, and it’s the successful days that get us what we want.”

3. The 95/5 Rule

The “95/5 Rule” is like the “80/20 Rule” on steroids, and it states that five percent of the tasks you perform account for 95 percent of your results. So quit wasting your time on unproductive activities, like checking e-mails or idle chatter. Focus your life on the activities that produce the greatest rewards. Focus on growing your business, or your family, or whatever your priority happens to be.

Most people only accomplish a fraction of what they could accomplish because they spend a majority of their time working on meaningless tasks.

4. The Rule of Purpose

The “Rule of Purpose” states that everything created has a purpose. From a space shuttle to bubble gum …and even you. This rule also states that failure to understand that purpose will almost certainly result in “misuse.”

This is why it’s imperative that you discover your purpose and dedicate your life to fulfilling it, you don’t want to live an unfulfilled life. You were created for a specific reason; there is something you’re supposed to be doing. You need to discover it, and do it.

5. The Rule of Consequences

The “Rule of Consequences” offers a solution to making important decisions. I’m often asked, “Should I go after my dreams,” and the answer is, “Can you live with the consequences if you fail?” If you can live with the consequences if you fail, then you should go after your dreams, if you are unwilling to deal with the consequences of failure, then don’t go after your dreams.

6. The Rule of Right Direction

The “Rule of Right Direction” states that if you keep-on traveling in the right direction, you will eventually arrive at your intended destination.

However, we often get side-tracked, derailed, or “depressed” on the road to success. Instead of pushing through we give up.

You must fight for want you want! Don’t get “depressed” when things get hard. Remember, it’s darkest just before dawn. Tough times will come on the “road to success,” …but you have to keep on moving!

I like what the Apostle Paul said, when he was going through a tough time, he said, I’m troubled on every side, yet not distressed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed!

What are you saying Mr. Self Development?

I’m saying that if you just keep on heading to your destination, despite the circumstances, you will arrive there!
