Play My Sounds

Portable audio software players allow easy mobility primarily on USB removable devices, such as a flash drive, to output sound on computers. Generally program and windows registry settings are not stored on a computer, other than perhaps temporary settings. Hence a library of mp3 files, and other audio or video formats can be quickly played , after connecting the USB drive or pen drive to a PC or Notebook. Similar to their desktop versions, they perform reasonably similar, i.e. output sounds to enjoy, or recordings for listening, e.g. student lectures, recorded radio broadcasts, and possibly podcasts. Podcasting has become an important function for many, which continues to grow, with audio download consumption equivalent to video, with about 70 million US citizens watching or listening to a podcast, according to data from Edison Research. But today of course, digital hardware mp3 players, smartphones, iPods, iPads, Amazon's kindle, Google's Android, etc, are increasingly used for playing, recording, video viewing, reading, and storing music. Android and iOS continue to increase in market share, with the US smartphone population at about 50 % based upon Comscore, Neilson and Pew Internet Project research . Mobiles offer convenience when on the go for listening, transfer, download, sharing, social networking, etc with other devices. But also general suitability, such as hardware and software upgrades, accessories, wireless or cable interfacing, and more.

There is also cloud storage, e.g. from Amazon, Google Play, and many subscription online MP3 store and download sites, and mobile apps, that all contribute to music interactivity with digital players and their users. This report (pdf), from web-feet research explains five main reasons for the increased consumer demand. But I guess there is still a place for portable audio software, and related tasks, such as music editing, organizing, and enhancement. Although Google Internet searches seem to be low relative to digital audio products...

Xion Audio Player

Compact player with 10 band equalizer with Internet streaming, and high fidelity output. I noticed it's simple library with a range of selections, e.g. FM High Voltage, Top 40, Trance, and more for instant playing. I think it connects to online radio stations at 1.FM. Supports common formats, and has features such as random and repeat play, play list, library, skins, global hot keys, visualizations, about 20 global hot keys, and over 800 skins to download and more.

Foobar2000

Select the portable version from the main install interface, and when it opens, so does a dialog box to select a range of appearance settings for main and play list layout, and corresponding colours. You may want to leave as is, or enhance it a bit. It's a basic window type player interface, with standard features, equalizer, play list creation, visuals, random play, folder shuffle. But appears to support a range of audio formats, i.e. mp3, flac, wma, mp4, aac, cd, and more. Does have a networking feature under preference, but appears needs setting up, e.g. proxy server. Also advanced settings, e.g. for decoding, scanning, search filters, and for playing.

XM Play

Easily import or drag and drop files to play on this easy to use interface, which supports many formats. These include wma, ogg, wav, cda, aiff, m3u, mod, and others through it's plug ins. Also various skins and visualizations to enjoy. There are numerous system for functionality and refining, e.g. forward and backward frame jumping, favourite playlist creation and export, mixing options (for interpolation, ramping, and surround), media playing from url's, and alter aspect and zoom ratios. But also select title or chapter from DVD menu, load, download, upload subtitles and configure it's settings, alter audio channels, select stereo mode, configure hot keys, and more.

Spider Player

Spider Player - 100's of Icecast and Shoutcast Internet Radio Streams

Attractive and sleek interface, functional, easy to use, crystal clear sounds, is what I liked. Plus of course hundreds of radio stations from Icecast and Shoutcast. Continual and diverse music if you want it. Relatively easy to customise with presets - e.g. acoustic, pop, techno, metal, jazz, and tons more including importing and exporting. Also auto download lyrics and see the text display, if available, on the R/H side of the playlist., which can be exported in html format. Spider Player supports around 30 formats, and can rip and convert into common formats. But also record, and easily select from 32 kbps to 320 kbps bit rate on a sliding scale for mp3 output. Also includes loss less Internet radio station recording. Select skins, several languages, cross fading, custom and global hot keys. Practical, resourceful, player, recorder, ripper and converter.

Small and simple interface mp3 player from Daan Systems, released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and listed on source forge, a open source centre for software development and distribution. Has continuous play, advanced playlist editor (load, add, save, add directory, etc), 8 band equalizer, ogg vorbis support, convert to wav, ID3 multi-tagger, Internet streaming, a range of optional settings, skins, basic keyboard controls, and other functions.

Songbird

Comprehensive and functional loaded multi media player, with many powerful features for music management. Easily customizable, including skin to suit your needs, and includes for MAC and Android. This includes importing and exporting from itunes, support for multiple audio formats, and video and album artwork display. Also device or services support, e.g. Shoutcast, Concert Look up (powered by Songkick), Digital Store, Apple's Quick time format, Windows Media Player, "mash tape" for web source mashing, Gracenote CD look up, CD ripping, Last FM interaction, MTP and MSC device support and other services.

You can browse those services within the program. (see my screenshot above for 7 digital store) Also has "watch folders" for auto importing files, comprehensive library management, custom hot keys, gap less playback, and the common play, edit, repeat and equalizer features. Plenty to perform from this iTunes type media manager.

1x1 (V 1.75)

The windows explorer style interface allows easy navigation through the folders or directories for easy file playing. Simple forward and backwards directories search for mp3 and mp2 audio files, with plug in support for Winamp, and enhancer, equalizer presets and decoder settings. Small file size of about 170 kb, and has a compact interface mode and can enable log tracking and audio scrobble. Useful player to quickly display and play large archives of mp3's through it's folder view appearance.

AIMP 3

The AIMP 3 download file has a option to copy directly to a external drive for the portable version or a full installation. This is a attractive sleek software, with plenty of settings, from it's comprehensive preference settings. There are 5 categories - Playback - Play list - Player (several file formats) - Plug ins - Interface (Skins). also a Tag Editor, Audio Library, Internet Radio Browser, Scheduler (with alarm), DSP Manager, with tons of settings.
Perhaps spend time familiarizing overall, and getting used to the small buttons. You can configure, sort, and search play lists, alter language skins, languages, create hot keys, install plug ins, integrate with windows explorer, export track lists, and more. Also load equalizer presets (e.g. Pop, Party, Live, Jazz, ballad, Full Bass, etc) and add sound effects, e.g. Echo, Reverb, Pitch, Tempo, and more. Listen from dozens of default Internet radio streams from Icecast, and also capture (record) them to hard drive, which defaults as an mp3 file (128 kbps) to your user name documents directory. Has a comprehensive help file, with screenshots, to help make this a quality player to enjoy audio.

Media Storage Security
Don't forget to scan your USB flash drive and other external devices for spyware, malware and viruses, with suitable and free antivirus and related programs. Removable virus procedure (my tutorial article using popular freeware) particularly if you are swapping, storing, transferring, and playing audio (or any) files frequently to other computers. Threats and security issues (pdf white paper report) are possible and potentially damaging, when connected to a network. This includes your home, school, or business network system.

Summary:
There are many mobile audio freeware players to select for suitability. From simple directory or windows style to more fully featured with enhanced customizable interface. This means simple, quick playing of your mp3's and other music formats, archived files from your or an other's PC. But also optimizing with various inbuilt and external functions. This includes Internet or online features, e.g. streaming audio from preset radio stations and music related websites, connecting, recording, and integrating online (e.g. Last.fm), purchasing albums, mp3's, and audio books from online stores. But also downloading enhancement plug ins, skins, related utilities, tools, and optimal updates and upgrades. But importantly, simply enjoy playing your USB stored portable audio software and music files on another computer or notebook should such an occasion occur.

iPod for Text Sounds

Easily convert text to audio on online websites, including to mp3 format for you to hear. Include typed text, copied (cut/paste), or uploaded to the application. Easily and quickly create a mp3 audio file, by pasting in a body of text, without any sign up. You can select a male or female voice for your output, and then download after conversion. Currently cannot upload files for conversion, but can use their bookmarklet for converting web page text to mp3. Also can insert converted html/javascript codes, plugins for blogs (e.g. blogger widget, Wordpress plugin) and websites. Also for iGoogle and a Facebook widget. Supports a few languages.

YAKiToMe
Requires signing up, but their are a few features, such as a range of male and female voices, storage history for later accessibility, and can audio convert rss feeds and emails. But also pdf, word documents, and text files. Conversion may take a few mintues, but then can easily download your file when completed. You can also advertise on YAKiToMe.

Been around a little while and relatively popular for file conversions, particularly for PDF's to word format, and I think also for extracting audio, i.e. Youtube to MP3. But easily convert doc(x), PDF, txt, rtf, etc of up to 100MB. Easily convert a website address (i.e. URL). Option to sign up for a Zamzar inbox, for basic pro, and business plans, and larger file conversions, with online storage.

Easily convert MP3 to Ringtones online, by uploading a file, playing it, selecting start/end points, possibly editing, e.g. by reducing the file size, fading in or out, then create a ringtone. Download either to your mobile phone or computer, to transfer via blue-tooth or USB. Any conversion though, may be better described as modifying, since the output file is generally a MP3 (again). However, there are options to convert to other formats, such as WAV, WMA, or OGG.

But of course you can create your own Ringtones by simply recording to your phone, or by applying editing and conversion software. This might include Audacity, Cool Edit Pro 2 (e.g. for increasing volume, sample rate reduction, noise limiting, fading, etc) and specific converters, depending on required file formats, such as WAV to SMAF for Samsung (.mmf files), plus other software to create formats for AAC, Midi, IMelody, Nokia, etc. I'm sure plenty of us have been through all sorts of manual conversions, including searching and downloading melody codes, or creating them on earlier version mobiles.

But easier uploading MP3's to create an instant truncated file. I have tested, and become familiar with dozens of software audio tools, and these days I just like, uploading/downloading on the internet in some instances. You may want to extract a collection of mp3 files - music or sound tutorial recordings from the Youtube web site and from other video related web sites. Perhaps then edit or "cut" the mp3 files, with audio editors, maybe organize and manage the sound files, then select software to burn or copy the files to a blank disc for later listening. Or transfer to a mobile phone or portable mp3 player for listening when on the move. Perhaps store the files on a external drive or USB pen drive for device transfer, backup, and reference. If you Google search "Youtube to mp3 Converter Online", several closely related results appear, yielding a huge choice for YouTube and video to mp3 conversion. But you need try a few online mp3 converters, as what I did, to find what works the best (or fastest or easiest, e.g. without signing up, adding email address, etc, if you don't want to) for a particular video. Relatively quick video transfer and sound output that include FLV, 3GP, MP4, AVI (i.e. DivX) formats. Has a half day server storage limit for completion of paused downloads for transfer to MP3. Works good, as I found out.

Because this site showed first in Google search results, I tried it straight away. Quite fast generating quality MP3 music, plus I was watching a YouTube video on another tab in Firefox browser. Impressive really, from their nice “fine looking” streamlined site. So can be assured of relatively quick quality audio, bitrate being 128 kBits/s or higher, including from Linux system, Mac, and iPhone systems or platforms.

Many of us enjoy our music, particularly if it's for free, in the MP3 audio format and can be easily downloaded or streamed, then played on our computer software player, MP3 player, or iPod for listening. Here are a collection of MP3 sites for free legal download, and are based on the creative commons licenses. The sites are a mix of music forums, chat, communities, collaboration, musician/band promotion, and search engines.

Please note there might be restrictions to download in certain countries, based on licensing agreements within that site's platform host country, and I'm unsure if these sites will remain in the future in their current form. Best to search online or from this post to visit and search for MP3's.

MusicMesh (http://www.musicmesh.net/): Easy to use search engine for music and video's, and has a cool looking spinning CD's, which when clicked branches to other CD's in a hierarchy. The accompanying audio track titles are then displayed on the site's right hand side.

MP3 Realm (http://mp3realm.org/): A evolving search engine to filter out MP3's and clips based on titles, albums, etc, and also indexes lyrics for searching.

Audiobaba (http://www.audiobaba.com/): Add your own music to their search engine, which can search new and interesting music. Produces results based on similar sounds but are different.

Free albums net (http://free-albums.net/): Free MP3 albums to source from links and to download, and seems to be a comprehensive site.

Grooveshark (http://listen.grooveshark.com/): Search engine for MP3's and internet radio listening. Discover, share, promote, and is a monetization application.

Your Free Music Downloads (http://www.yourfreemusicdownloads.com/): Says it has access to over 7 million audio tracks, and about 18 million registered users. Hence free legal mp3 music to download for your iPod or computer.

MP3 audio tracks can be easily mixed with MP3 free DJ software downloads, to help produce music similar to a DJ performing in dance night clubs. Various DJ functions such as auto and manual beat input, cue marking for start, USB Console support, effects (e.g. delay, reverb, flange) and more. Supports MP3 WAV, OGG, and other audio formats. Seems to be a good download.

otsAV Free: Free DJ mixer version of the professional software version, for beat creation, fade mixing, dynamics processing, with video mixing and karaoke. You can produce your own MTV music channel with a bit of customization. Has plenty of functions - manual override, time scaling, scratching, pitch, and more.

Decks 1.20: Can record to WAV format from MP3's, after beat matching and cross fading audio. Create a CD compilation from this easy to use DJ software download.

KraMixer: DJ software to mix MP3, WAV, and OGG audio formats, and records to MP3 format. Includes automatic bpm counting, loop counting, effects (e.g. echo, reverb, flange, etc), and other features, all operating from it's fast sound mixing process.

MixVibes Free 5.2: small DJ software download (1.5 MB) to play and mix your MP3 tracks. Supports common audio formats, with controls for bass, treble, pitch, BPM, and more.

UltraMixer Free 2.3.7.1: DJ mixing software download for CD's, MP3's, WAV, OGG, WMA, and other audio formats. I have used to find by searching the location of a MP3 file on a numbered MP3 disc, from about 35 discs (approx 8000 MP3's). You can categorize CD's and folders, including from the hard drive.

MP3 CD Collector 1.4.0: Another collection organizer to catalogue your CD's and local PC files and folders. Can play the MP3 when clicked, to the default player, if the CD is present, or if the MP3 is local. You can queue tracks to the Winamp play list , and supports random play, and can export your collection to a html file.

MP3 to AIFF Converter: Simple MP3 to AIFF format converter utility, or AIFF to MP3, and can convert multiple files at once. AIFF, developed by Apple computer, has a larger file size than MP3.

Audioshell: Integrates with windows explorer as a shell extension plugin to allow tag editing of MP3 files, and many other formats.

EncSpot MP3 Analyzer Basic v2 and beta v2.2: The basic version scans and analyzes MP3 files to determine the encoder used, and other information. It tries to indicate the quality or bit rate of the MP3 file.

Similarity (From music-similarity com): Useful program for finding and deleting duplicate MP3 files (and WMA, OGG, ASF, WAV, FLAC, APE, and WV). This software searches audio files (with options) based on the same or similar sound, and ID tags (ID3, WMF, Vorbis). I tried this software and runs fast, and saves duplicates in another tabbed window, with separate relevant tag information and then your folder/file information (to help compare the duplicate MP3's). Free MP3 Software Audio Players to embed in your blog or web site, for your visitors to listen to music from MP3 audio, vocal tracks, or sounds. These software players require you to easily embed HTML code, some with customization, in your blog or web site. This allows audio to be either automatically played, or the visitor can choose to play with options, from MP3 audio files, that are hosted on a server. There are free servers (Search online for free hosts, e.g. Boxstr or Hotlink Files), or perhaps try your web site's server, or your ISP, to upload and then link the MP3 audio files to the player's source code.

This list of free MP3 encoder and converter software have a important role, and perhaps without any to download, then the MP3 format known to millions of people for enjoyment probably would be non existent. The average CD audio format for a 3 minute song is about 32 MB in file size. However MP3 encoder software can compress the song to about 3mb or about 10 % of the original, usually with marginal loss in quality. Based on our hearing judgment, the MP3 algorithms can largely eliminate - what we can't hear, a sound that is relatively quieter than another sound when played together, and what sound that we can hear better than other sounds. Encoders essentially remove what we don't need to hear, based largely on perceptual coding.

These free software encoders and converter downloads, take advantage of our perception of hearing, and hence can produce acceptable quality MP3's for listening. The quality depends on the bitrate (often 128 Kbps) but higher can be applied for increased quality, but also increased file size. Most encoders convert WAV format to MP3, but include other formats, e.g. WMA to MP3. Popular encoder engines are Lame, but there is also Xing, BladeEnc, and Fraunhofer encoders.

To help distinguish between the two preceding bit rates, you can also set to variable bit rate (VBR) to automatically maximize encoding during more complex sound sectors (e.g. brass instruments). This will produce a more defined quality MP3 sound for some listeners to enjoy.

Remember when recording, to close non essential programs and turn off audio alerts, screen savers, etc, that could also be recorded. Also choose a folder destination for your MP3 files and set and check the input (eg. line in, microphone, etc), output, and quality settings if any. Then record once the audio starts playing, and if recording a album you might what to split the recorded tracks with a MP3 editor. Often it's useful to have both a free MP3 recorder and editing software package for multi track recordings.

Slice Audio File Splitter: Fast software to split a MP3 file into equal segments based on time, number of files, and silence selection to determine the end of a track. Has option to add to explorer context menu MP3's.

mp3DirectCut: Also a mini editor and recorder for Mp3's to directly cut, copy, and paste. You can easily change the volume, without decompression for audio editing. The integrated recorder allow easy MP3 creation from the PC's audio input. Applying the cue sheets and pause detection, or auto cue, you can easily split lengthy mp3 files.

From my own experience of spending hours music editing here are a few tips:

* Back up your MP3 before editing, as you might save what you don't want to save. Also back up your free editor as well, as it may change to shareware, discontinue or become unstable after extensive use.

* Perhaps defrag, and clean your hard drive if you intend to process several MP3 or other audio files. Music editing, like burning to CD's can be intensive for computers. I have edited from 10 minutes to 3 hours continuously and 12 hours using a batch process. Then run a PC optimizer software (e.g. ccleaner, defrag) to clean your computer after extensive editing.

* Use automation features for large or several MP3's.

*Remember to create output directories for several MP3's or tracks to easily locate them, and to save in the required format, e.g. MP3.

* Remember to start with quality sounding music MP3's, to reduce the time required for enhancement, which may never reach full quality through editing.

* Multiple processing of the same MP3 file, particularly for noise/pop/hiss removal might have a reduced quality effect, depending on the original bit rate.

* Check for updates, and visit online forums and tutorials for help.

* Sometimes it's easier and quicker to go shopping (including online) for a remastered/remix CD of older and marginal quality tracks, than spending hours recording, editing, converting, and setting up to transfer MP3 music from a cassette or vinyl turn table to your computer. I brought a cheap Santana remastered CD from ebay USA, rather than bothering to transfer and edit the old 1969 vinyl album I had.

Because MP3 music editing can be relatively simple but also comprehensive, there are a range of free MP3 music editor software downloads to suit all levels. I think Audacity being the most popular music editor, and has plenty of online help and tutorials. TheMP3 cutting software downloads, are probably the easiest for quick audio editing. So perhaps after ripping a CD to MP3's on your computer, you may want to back up the MP3's for safe keeping, or play your audio tracks. Your MP3's can be either burned as MP3 data or a WAV file. ISO CD Burner: No installation for this utility, as you drop the executable in to the same directory as the ISO file to be transferred. You need of course create an ISO (i.e. image) file from your MP3's - see ImgBurn.

ImgBurn: I believe this is a popular free software to download, where you can also create a ISO image as well as burn it, with optional verification. Supports a variety of CD/DVD writers, and has comprehensive settings to handle advanced features for building, writing, file associations, and more.

ISO Recorder: Known as a Windows XP power toy add on, it's a simple right click and flick transfer of an ISO image.

Free ISO Burner (http://www.freeisoburner.com/): Has had major update January 2009; Easy to use download software to burn ISO files to various disc formats, including Blu-ray. Supports 64 bit and Windows Vista.

So there are quite a few basic to semi advanced free MP3 converter burning software to burn to a CD, either in image format or a direct/converted MP3 or WAV process to transfer to CD.

But perhaps a few tips when you do burn your MP3's:

*Use high quality discs if you intend to play them in a stereo/PC/DVD frequently, and check for cleanliness before burning. I use the cheaper bulk discs for short term storage rather than frequent playing.

* Best to turn off the screen saver, CD auto start, and other unnecessary computer background processes before burning. They might interfere with the burn process.

* Perhaps do not use your computer for intensive or multi-tasks, or better still leave it alone during burning.

* If burning the same batches of MP3's again, particularly from multiple folder directories, maybe save the play list, library list, or project list (if those options exists). Then use them to re-burn your MP3's.

* Remember to finalize (or check) if the CD has been finalized, to allow the CD to play in certain stereos/CD players. Multi-session discs are generally saved for adding more MP3's later, prior to finalizing the disc.

* Might be better to use a slower burn (i.e. write at 2x, 4x, rather than much higher) speeds to prevent errors, particularly if the CD/DVD drive is newer than the computer. The computer might be too slow to transfer the MP3's to the CD drive's laser.

* Perhaps defrag and clean out excess data files, registry fragments, prior to burning. Any data transfer might occur from scattered locations, increasing the potential for a burn error.

* Do store your CD's adequately - ideally in their own cases. Some of mine have stuck to plastic covers in their pouches, and flaked with blemishes if stored upon one another in a spindle pack.

* Consider another additional storage medium for MP3 back up, e.g. a USB drive, flash drive, a server, or a online site (if allowed). Then perhaps use a catalogue MP3 software for easy organization, search, tagging, and retrieval of your MP3's.

* Also - When visiting a freeware manufacturer's site for a free MP3 or WAV converter burning software download, take your time. You might accidentally click on their paid "plus" software packages, or an advertisement. I have seen paid versions similar in appearance to the free version, which is some times located and buried at the bottom of the page.

Perhaps you want to back up your personal CD collection on your computer for safe keeping, then perhaps to your hardware MP3 Player. Then a free MP3 ripping software download, will often easily perform such a task. There are a handful of free MP3 ripping software available, and below I have listed some for you to get ripping.
