The story of Moustachette is a tale as old as time. You see, Moustachette was raised a poor, black child from Mississippi. It grew up with 3 brothers, 2 sisters, and Ma (Pa done runned off) in a one room shack near Peterson’s Swamp, LA. While times were tough, it was this humble upbringing that shaped Moustachette into the film it is today. Many have contested the legend of Moustachette and claim it was born from the mind of Patrick Stump… In fact, now that we think about it… that makes way more sense… We’ll tell that story instead.

A few years ago, Patrick Stump brought the idea of Moustachette to the immensely creative minds of thirtysevenclick. The handsome duo immediately got to work making the vision a reality. With an abundance of heart and yelling, the team filmed Moustachette over 5 days in Los Angeles. The crew consisted mainly of bearded hipsters willing to work for the free Red Vines provided on set and ex-cons answering Craig’s List ads (we still don’t know what happened to that make-up artist on the second day; we can only hope that she’s happily married in Brazil).

Three tubs of Red Vines later, production wrapped and the crew sadly went their separate ways (some into The Valley…ewwww). Thirtysevenclick returned to beautiful San Diego and started the post-production process. After months of grueling editorial and sound work in a dark, sweaty room attached to a condemned sex shop, the team emerged with 16 minutes of comedic and ironic gold.

For those of you unfamiliar with the project, Moustachette is a tongue-in-cheek, satirical look at a group of unabashedly pompous and misled young artists. Overwhelmed by the naivety and selfishness of his best friend, Eugene searches for truth, integrity and maybe a blueberry milk-shake.

Eugene, portrayed by Patrick Stump in a powder blue stocking cap, drives the film. Patrick felt the cap connected him to the character and has since donated all 241 caps used in production to the children of Sudan. The role of Eugene’s best friend, Casper, is played by Ryan Key of the band Yellowcard and his turn had early whispers of a possible Oscar nod (these later turned out to be completely untrue). The film also has a special cameo by fellow Fallout Boy, Pete Wentz (he wears a trucker hat to offset Patrick’s stocking cap; are you getting the wardrobe choices here? So deep.).

Once complete, the film started a run on the international film festival circuit (Vail, Bel Air, Toronto, London…all “poor” places where the arts thrive) where it found great success and critical acclaim. Unfortunately, there are only so many seats at festivals and the public demanded more. Moustachette.com was created by thirtysevenclick to give fans a place to learn about the film and keep tabs on its screenings. The outpouring of support for the site sparked a fire that turned into a large brush fire in rural San Diego County. Once under control (SDFD rocks), those flames were used to create a social community around the film.

Facebook pages for the film’s characters popped up, giving another outlet for fans to connect. The Facebook movement was soon followed by a Moustachette Twitter feed that has over 11,000 followers and serves as a hub for heated debates on movies, music, milkshakes, and mustaches.

Along the way, Moustachette’s trademark pink mustache carved out it’s own social identity. The Great Moustachette Sticker Contest was a huge success and pink mustache stickers were sent to hundreds of fans in over 15 countries. The loyal Moustachetters then proceeded to “stache” their communities and post pictures of their dirty work on Flickr. The site currently has around 1,000 Moustachette photos posted by fans.

The festival run and sticker contest are now over and it is finally time to give Moustachette back to the community that has supported, contributed, and followed its success. When looking for the perfect unveiling of Moustachette, the team decided Sweetbands would be a good home. Given Sweetbands’ comedic social commentary, grassroots upbringing, and powerful Tea Party convictions, Moustachette will be well taken care of.

The Moustachette team plans to continue the fun at Sweetbands’ Facebook page, Twitter feed, and Sweetbandsapparel.com. Fans of Moustachette will also get to view future films by thirtysevenclick on the site. With a custom Moustachette Sweetband to accompany the film’s release, Moustachette is now available for free at Sweetbandsapparel.com.

Otherwise known as “first loser,” Moustachette came in second place in the short film competition at the ReelHeart Film festival in Toronto two weeks ago. Thanks to the festival organizers and everyone who came out to see the final festival screening of Moustachette. (Is anyone ready for an online release?!?!) Also, a special thank you to the city of Toronto. Wow. We had seen Scott Pilgrim vs The World, but we honestly had know idea how fun, cultural, friendly, and inspiring you would be. Good work Canada! Our buddies over at thirtysevenclick actually did a whole podcast on the subject. Check it out!

Long time, no chat. Great news! Moustachette is playing in Toronto at the ReelHeart Film Fest this Friday night at 7:15pm. It’s at some “Innis College” which is a school or something, and everyone is going to love it and you have to be there and be excited and clap and cheer and make moustache signs with your finger over your lip and…deep breath. (We’re very excited.) You can get all the info here.

In other news…Yes, Moustachette will be coming out on the interwebs very soon. We promise. It will be released on the website for a super awesome new sweatband company called “SweetBands.” They’re sponsoring the whole thing, so we hope you’ll check out their stuff after watching the film. (Rumor has it there may be a fashionably-pink Moustachette Sweetband for sale as well.) Stay tuned to this blog, Twitter, Facebook, et al for more info as we get closer to release.

There are a lot of negatives to the film festival process – antiquated application formats (“You want me to download this pdf, print it, fill it out, and then fax it back to you?”), festival coordinators who lose screeners…twice, under-attended screenings, and the unavoidable sense of “why did i put all that work into this?” – but every so often you meet amazing people with stories that typify what it takes to get things done.

Steve and Karen are two of these people. They made a feature film. It’s playing in LA for a week. You’ll want to see it because it’s good. But you need to see it because it represents the personal sacrifices and drive necessary to make an independent film.

If you’re in LA, get in your car, wait in traffic, get to the theatre, & see their film. If you like it (which you will), find Steve/Karen and tell them about it. At the very least, you’ll feel less guilty about watching the Jersey Shore and Bad Girls Club.

Saturday…October 9…2010…4:30pm…where will you be? If your answer is the “Best International Shorts Programme at the Raindance Film Fest” then you win a prize. A BIG prize. This will likely be the last time to catch Moustachette on the big screen. And that big screen will be the Apollo Cinema in Piccadilly Circus, London. If you’re especially neurotic and need everything planned out before getting in the car (or plane, COME ON Brasil and Australia), the particular big screen will be screen “C.”

Moustachette is playing with a couple of other great short films – Happiness is Hate Therapy (Canada), I Am A Fat Cat (USA), Fly (Germany/Poland), Still (Cyprus), Lin (UK) – in an awesome time slot. What else do you have going on Saturday at 4:30p in London? Soccer? It will be raining. Come inside and catch a few flicks, then go party with Kate Moss and Jordan until Gary Glitter takes you home. Good London fun!

So if this is the last time to see Moustachette on the big screen, is Moustachette going the way of the disloyal order of water buffalo? How can you see it? We promised an announcement at the end of summer but we had to wait until Moustachette played in Ireland and London and plans are definitely in the works…

There will be a limited edition Moustachette headband available and purchase of the headband will get you exclusive access to the film online. Stay tuned for more info…and maybe a behind-the-scenes video with Mr. Wentz.

Noooooo, we’re just kidding. We know Ireland and England are entirely different. One has leprechauns and the other has soccer hooligans. But this summer, they both will have one thing in common…MOUSTACHETTE!

That’s right all you Irish-Englanders, come in from the rain for a few minutes and catch MOUSTACHETTE at the International Film Festival Ireland in Clonmel and then at the Raindance Film Festival in a place called “London” (which may be smaller than Clonmel, we can’t find it on a map).

The IFFI will happen the week of September 4^th thru 11^th in a “magical” chateau that the Irish call a “house.” Apparently, everyone is really rich in Ireland. The festival also has large, phallic trophies which would be AMAZING to win.

Raindance will take place the week of September 28^th thru October 10^th in the provincial township of London. We’re particularly excited about Raindance because this guy was on the judges’ panel last year…

Between now and September we’ll have more info on the festivals, screening times and locations, and maybe some Stasche-tastic games for people in the area (Who will be the first to put up a Stasche in Picadilly Circus??). Let us know if you’ll be around and want to take part in the festivities.

Hello, Moustachette. Sorry for the absence. We’ve been holed up with the world’s most influential minds in an ultra-exclusive, undisclosed location trying to figure out how to release Moustachette to the world. We poured over distributors’ convoluted profit-sharing arrangements (I must say, Mr Weinstein, you are a shrewd cat.). We set up a pros/cons breakdown for the too-good-to-be-true studio deals rolling off the fax machines (Tom Cruise thought we were playing charades. Who invites Jerry Maguire to a 2 month brainstorming session?!). And we examined all the not-for-profit, cause-based possibilities (Bono sincerely had some good ideas…until he started touching our house pets inappropriately. I mean, we know you’re a big rock star, dude. But the ferret? Did you have to get all weird with the ferret?). And after all that time and money…we had nothing. Nothing, that is, until we went to the Vail Film Festival.

We got off the horn with Zach Braff and decided to rendezvous for the Moustachette screening in Vail. Over some apres ski cocktails, we explained our predicament to Mr Scrubs. He seemed concerned, but that guy has one of the foulest mouths of any moderately successful television actor we know and it’s sometimes hard to understand what he’s talking about. You’ve never heard someone use the C-word so many times in conversation; whether you’re talking about dog racing, the weekend’s expected snowfall, or how to release a short film…it’s all “C-this” and “C-that.” Crazy. He’s also very handsy in person. You have to constantly have your mitts guarding the beans around that SOB. And a partier, too. Once saw him force a hooker to scorch her back on a fireplace so he could freebase some black tar heroin off her tramp-stamp. Hilarious!

We digress…

Between the litany of caustics spewing from his mouth, Zach did give us an epiphany. “Headbands,” he said. “What? Like what the girls on The Hills wear?” we wondered. “No, you c—s!” he blasted. “Headbands. Like sweatbands. Rad headbands. Radbands.” And it was then, it all made sense. Headbands.

Moustachette will be released this summer and it will involve headbands. Rad headbands. It will be released online. Everyone, everywhere (even Hungary) will be able to see it. Between now and then, stay tuned. There are some goodies up our sleeves. Not unlike these goodies from Hungary…

We cheered, shouting: “Post that genius to the interwebs!!” and triumphantly carried Apple Will on our shoulders to the nearest corporate koi pond. There, Producer Paul delivered a sentimental eulogy best summarized with: “Apple Will, you are like these fish – beautiful, strong, orange and white.” We all clapped.

But, unfortunately and quite rudely, Apple Will disappeared that night (we told him time and again Tijuana gangs aren’t “cool”) and took with him the location of the trailer.

We waited, worried; sure Apple Will was stuffed in the back of a windowless, 1982 Chevy Astrovan. But the ransom demand never surfaced. There were rumors of ditches, shallow graves, and forced labor in one of those seedy bars on Tijuana’s “fancier” side. No one knew what became of Will or, more importantly, the trailer. We braced for the worst. Until this weekend…
