We noticed this funny old motorbiker while waiting for the green light. Firstly, his big white case drew my attention, then I noticed a very odd thing: grandpa carried a big bunch of cigarettes, you can see them in a basket and in a packet, but, I think, the big case full of them, too. For whom you carry it, grandpa? Isn’t it too much for you, probably, for grandkids?

As we know, hobby groups are separated by members’ age. Young people have no borders, they don’t pretend to be serious and important, that’s why they can let themselves into cheap, funny, sometimes stupid activities. But aged men are forced by society to act differently. That’s why they like to spend time under big toys, like huge off-road cars or choppers, or supersports.

In Thailand big guys do styling of big motorcoaches. Of course, they do it in the best Asian traditions: bright colored, naive paintings on a body (ohh, my eyes!), various toys, lights, mirrors. Everything in big quantities. Look at the photos of an example we found near the Pattaya pier. It had:

No-no-no, they aren’t aliens, they are Ultramen – very popular character of Japanese movie

Plenty of mirrors and blinkers. I’d say, too many…

Beware of motorcycle thiefs? Don’t want to put on your motorbike 15 ugly and awkward wheel locks? Can’t sleep for whole nights and spend your time at a window? Use a new way of parking – allow a tree to do it for you! Just forget your vehicle in jungle for 3-5 years and – voila! Nobody can stole it!

P. S. Seriously, it reminds me of antique bicycles parked on Amsterdam streets forever.

Thais like to use various little, funny toys in everyday life. It can be funny key fobs with anime characters, Doraemon or Hello Kitty. Or toys and stickers on cellphones. Sometimes, funny dolls and teddy-bears under car (and even big, serious buses!) tails. All these silly things are cute and sweet (suay in Thai or kawaii in Japan), usually. But, look at this poor baby doll under a racing car. What the owner wanted to say us? “I hate your suay things! I’m out of mainstream!”? Or: “I killed a child in myself!”? Anyway, it looks weird.

There is a city legend in Russia: if you put a CD under a windscreen, it will cheat a traffic police speed gun (stupid, I know). But, in Thailand police uses radar guns rarely, mostly far outside cities and never inside. So, why Thais put bunches of old CDs on motorcycles? And why they prefer to do it only with old motorcycles or motorcycles with sidecars? Because, it’s the best and the cheapest materials at hand, good to act as a motorcycle reflector! Highway codes ask to have reflectors for cases of main stoplights damage. BTW, most of Thais save money and don’t buy any lights for their custom vehicles, they suppose installing of 3-5 of old CDs is enough.

What workers of a very small village have to do when they need to decorate roofs of souvenir shops for a national holiday? In some Western country, they would order a real skylift vehicle for one day. But it’s Thailand, people are very poor. That’s why, they need to be inventors and use some materials at hand to construct their own skylift. So, say hello to Village Monster 2052 – a cherry picker, built with an old radio mast and several bamboo stems, based on an usual tractor. It can even lift up/down, but because a basket hardly mounted to the mast, it can’t keep a horizontal position, and man had to balance on handrails. Also a worker should be careful when tractor moves (yep, he doesn’t get off during tractor’s rides), because the mast starts to vibrate and can brake, or a tractor can roll off even. Hard work, isn’t it? But it’s Thailand – they just don’t care

Look at Asian traditional rattan and bamboo tableware tuk-tuks! My mistake is not accidental – both tuk-tuks made in technique of weaving, which usually Asian people use for furniture, tableware, mattings. But, here owners of tuk-tuks used it for tourists attraction, and I agree – it looks attractive, especially the first vehicle with a body weaved with colored stripes.

Elephant is the most popular animal in Thailand. It’s a symbol, friend and vehicle for Thais. During Thai holidays village people come to cities with elephants and drive them by streets blessing houses and earn some money. 2 days ago I noticed a funny thing: two elephant owners decided to follow official regulations for vehicles on a road and put red blinking tail light (same as everybody put on bicycles) and old CD (as a reflector) on elephant’s tail. I don’t support elephants exploitation, but it was a funny picture. Where is a number plate, guys???
