And without boring you all with some very delayed and boring travelogue, I’m going to write a bit about the places I visited. Especially as I only visited each port for a day, and everything I’ll have to day will sound entirely vacuous and obvious to anyone who’s spent more than about 5 minutes in these places.

Barcelona

After several most enjoyable days at sea, I headed off into Barcelona with my step-siblings KS and Bandini1 after an early Breakfast with the aim of avoiding the queues to get off the boat and on to the shuttle bus. After some deliberation we took the tourist bus with the rest of the family who had come to pay testament to a lack of queuing back at the boat. I can’t recommend the tourist buses as in my opinion they’re far too expensive and it’s difficult to return to a specific stop on the route without completing a cycle, which makes exploring difficult. We used this to get some bearings in Barcelona and make our way to La Sagrada Família, getting off fairly close to it and walking the rest of the way. We then wandered around the city for a few hours before riding the metro back to the port. Overall, it was an amazingly vibrant place, and I would have loved to have spent more time there.

Just after leaving Barcelona I read Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia and found what it had to say about the city very interesting, it’s certainly worth reading and sheds some light on things.

Monte Carlo

After disembarking the tender, I noticed two things:

How hot it was.

How expensive cold drinks were.

In all honesty, I didn’t give Monte Carlo a fair shot; I don’t enjoy baking hot climates, and I didn’t feel like wandering aimlessly.

Rome

Although we did stop at two ports in Italy, I missed out on the first for some unexplainable and complex reason. The second was Civitavecchia where we took a taxi to Rome and had a whistle-stop tour of Rome. On [Craig’s] advice, I tasted Roman ice-cream and pizza, although never got a chance to sample to coffee.

Alghero

When I said I visited two Italian ports, I was sort of lying. Alghero is a town on the Italian island of Sardinia. (Wikipedia also tells me that it’s the second biggest Island in the Mediterranean) And therefore is my third Italian port, except we reached it by tender- so it’s not really a port.

It is however, a beautiful town and fuses all kind of influences. It also has some exceptional coffee.

Palma

Palma didn’t really initially strike me as likely to be photogenic, so I didn’t bring my camera as it would be a bit of a hassle when buying a suit. I did however, buy a fairly sharp suit for the entirely reasonable sum of about €80. I can’t really say much more about Palma to be honest, I didn’t spend all that much time there, although it was a perfectly nice city. I did see some kind of police motorcade which passed us by, that was pretty cool.

Gibraltar

I wasn’t overly struck by what I saw of Gibraltar, which was just the main tourist drag. Alcohol is both very cheap on Gibraltar, and for sale to anyone over 16. Which strikes me as slightly crazy. The boat arrived at about half two, and we had to be back by six pm; so there wasn’t enough time to visit the monkey sanctuary- which comes highly recommended by everyone I spoke to about it.

The journey back

The journey back was relatively uneventful, and gave me the chance to get to know some of the new friends I met onboard a bit better. I also won a pub quiz with Lembit Öpik, who’s cabin was just down the corridor from mine. I will end with a picture of us celebrating our win on the last night.

It’s certainly been a while since I posted anything that cannot be described as depressingly numerical, dull, or entirely pointless.

I could talk about Lola Rennt on blu-ray,but when I did get to enjoy it in full HD the impact was noticeably lessened by how well Matt’s plasma TV could upscale a DVD. I can only conclude that Blu-Ray is for people with equipment that cannot upscale (I was thinking of linking to VLC here, but they’ve improved a lot recently) or for upscaling to displays the size of a tennis court with as many pixels as a Russia with the population density of Manhattan Island would have people. There’s little analysis I can perform on it without seeming deeply fatuous, so I’ll refrain. It is a wonderful film, and I surprised myself with the amount of the German I could understand.Sheiße! Manni!

I have been reading quite a bit lately, and by that I mean, more than I usually bring myself to, and less than I would like to. For all the intellectual benefits it brings, I’ve yet to find somewhere comfortable to do it.

I’d like to devote a small section to the entire rebranding of this blog. Although that’s a silly term to use here- it’s pretty much what I’ve done. I mean, this is hardly a brand. So, as from a few days ago, madebyalex.org has ceased to exist and been replaced with MostFoolhardy.org, in some vain hope that using the same name for this blog as I do across the internet at large will somehow encourage me to write more.

Madebyalex was a poor name, and somewhat arrogant. It has not been renewed. (This is also because godaddy.com is not a company I relish doing business with, but that’s for another day.)

If you wish to subscribe, or continue subscribing (all seven of you) then feel free to point your feedreader here.

Oh, and lieu of any interesting content here is a video of Plant and Page playing Nobody’s Fault But Mine:

Oh, and if you want to get the best upscaling performance when you watch video on your pc- changing the resolution of the screen to the same as the source and telling your graphics card to handle all upscaling itself works quite well. This same effect can be achieved with media-player classic homecinema, but I’m not sure how. Also the PS3 has an exceptional upscaler and can make even the worst quality videos watchable.

It’s been several months now since I last said anything noteworthy (bar expressing my disgust at the science funding crisis) and it’s probably time that I wrote something. Thanks to AppleCare my ageing iBook miraculously changed into a macbook before Christmas by virtue of some faulty bluetooth chip, my mac mini has since transformed into a powerhouse of an Intel Quad 2 machine running Fedora 8, by virtue of Christmas and has now got two monitors (running fairly happily under compiz, which is as the internet leads me to believe; is a complete miracle or the norm- depending on who you ask). I am currently in the first year of my A level course studying Physics, Chemistry and Math/Further Math and have just taken my first set of module exams back in January and am expecting results imminently, and am just at the stage of looking at Unis and courses. Any University propaganda is welcomed heartily, especially if it discusses the merits of a Computer Science and Physics joint honours course or either of the two as single honours.

I expect to be posting reactions to my AS module 1 grades, the Asia concert tomorrow night and the hopefully upcoming Jonathan Coulton concert sometime this month.

The STFC have recently massively slashed the budget for Physics in the UK by £80million. It means amongst many other things that the UK will drop out of exceedingly important international research, and many British research programmes will come under threat. It will also make it exceedingly difficult to take up further studies of Physics as a career.

No matter how this is construed, I cannot see anything good coming out of this decision and therefore urge all of you who are eligible to sign this petition and to join this group on facebook, which also plays host to much important information regarding this.

Also, expect somewhat more frequent posting here sometime in the future; I currently have lots that needs to be done.

Happy (belated) new years everybody, it’s been a fairly hectic 2007 for me; and things are starting to look up for 2008. However, I am currently snowed in with AS level stuff; so am going to be unable to blog as often as I would like to- and I’ve got some exams around the 10th which need revising for.

Since the iBook’s replacement by Apple, I’ve also built myself a fairly nice Linux box with the individual parts which I got for Christmas from my family. I’m happy to say that I’m running Fedora 8, although I did try out ubuntu and didn’t like it. [This advice is indispensable] With an upcoming Windows HDD for playing games [mainly in case they don't want to run under wine] so within the next month or so I’ll try and post some thoughts on both Linux and the Orange Box , and maybe several posts on the virtues of not randomly editing system config files. Using Linux is not without some caveats unfortunately, although from the limited recent experience (I used to use SuSE back at version 8.2) it does seem to have the most to offer in terms of features alone.

Well, a prosperous new year to you all- for I must go now. I hope to update with some more frequency this year.

Edit:
I also have some play-asia vouchers for $5 off of $50 which I won’t be able to use in time, so if anyone especially wants them; just leave a comment.

The k800i is, all-in-all a very nice phone. One of it’s main fairly innovate features is that it can run firmware updates from the menu and download them over the air. This would be fairly useful as a first diagnostic against a software problem with the phone as the occasional 20mb download wouldn’t really hurt the networks here, however it has been unsanctimoniously disabled.

This is an even worse shame when you get to discover that the official PC based updater is a complete bastard to get working. Let alone it needing a PC to run it on. To get this tool (gratefully necessitated by the good folks at three) you should firstly download a reasonably recent version then you should install flash player with this exact link, because installing it in Firefox is fine for most functional uses of flash, but this requires an ActiveX installation of Flash- which unsurprisingly almost no-one will tell you.

Pity it didn’t fix the problems with my phone though.
Bugger.

It seems that Joss Whedon has been granted a new series to write with Tim Minear.
But as television here goes, all I’m finding myself watching is Heroes, Spooks and QI. Without the iPlayer as the BBC have yet to release a version for OSX (or preferably an open platform based on Dirac).

Now that’s it all properly installed on my mac-mini I feel that it’s time for a blog post.

Friday: Leopard Launch Day

I arrived at the Southampton Apple store at about 3pm and joined the queue as soon as it was set up. And I have to say that the queue was a really great social atmosphere and that everyone there was really friendly and I must thank great high wolf from macrumors forums for doing a drinks run. Also, it was really cool that the Apple store employees handed out chocolates and water- it certainly makes a change from many companies launch night arrangements. (I’m looking at you Sony)

Saturday: MacLiveExpo

Due to several thousand football fans and a line closure it took well over an hour and a half on the tubes (mostly packed) to reach the expo. There was some interesting loot to be picked up, namely some nice juggling balls from Konica Minolta- now if everyone did that I wouldn’t have been able to get home due to a vast surplus of said juggling balls. There was an interesting showing of Leopard by Apple, which would have been more interesting if I’d seen it prior to launch- but my fears that Time Machine would need a dedicated drive were put to rest. It only needs free space on a not-booted HFS+ journaled disk. There were some very good hardware deals going on at the show, and if you can pick up the early bird free tickets and get a reasonably direct train then it’s probably a good idea to buy a mac there. Unless you’re taking the tube, then it would be buying a mac for a random stranger on your train.

As for Leopard itself; the new dock (the non-3d one that is) is shiny and Mail is a lot more responsive and powerful, and is now no longer embarrassing to search for emails with.

I’ve been unable to make any new posts for the last few weeks on account of everything being exceptionally busy. But do not fear this blog will be returning to usual service in exactly two weeks time! For on the 24th many exciting things happen:

I become 17 and thus able to start learning to drive a car.

themak.org is retired and replaced by madebyalex.org

I update the code behind this whole endeavor to WordPress 2.3- which will be released on that very day. A nice birthday present, I should think.

I change the design of the site to resemble this (help doing so would be greatly appreciated), or use one of the shiny sandbox themes.

Until then,
Alex

While graphically violent, it definitely served the plot very well and proved to be a most excellent and gripping novel and was impossible to put down- the dystopian backstory certainly adds to the plot.

The BBC appear to still be convinced that only windows XP users deserve the ability to watch television over the internet. This is in part due to their settling on Windows Media Video with DRM as the apt way for them to deliver this; it seems all the stranger that they’ve chosen this as the BBC already have a perfectly serviceable codec, which is self-acclaimed to be well suited to internet streaming.

To me, the BBC seems like the perfect institution to develop a DRM technology which is moderately open and least inconvenient to the user- although I cannot see the difference between them broadcasting an open MPEG2 stream using DVB and them broadcasting an open MPEG4 one using http.

I know that there are major legal differences between broadcasting it over the internet and over DVB, and that the files can be downloaded in faster than real time, but this does not have to be combatted by a completely opaque, utterly intrusive platform which will eventually lead to a locked down media file which can only be watched at it’s leisure and the viewers expense.

It seems to me as if the BBC is in a unique position here, where they have the chance to be able to redefine internet television with an open standard which allows all broadcasters to reach their audiences using whatever platform, whatever player. If this becomes the new distribution platform for television- then copyright law in Great Britain should recognise it as analogous to television and appreciate that it will have the same problem with copying that modern television does- which are insignificant to the BBCs DVD sales.

And I’m not the only person who would buy something I especially enjoyed on DVD, because the BBC have some really great stuff, and after all, every television owner in the country paid for it.

Anyway, to those of you unlucky enough to be using WINXP: gorge yourself on some telly.

I have recently rejoined the world of the mobile phone user with my purchase of a Sony Ericsson k800i from three, and have to say that I am fairly happy with it as the call quality is very good and three offer the best data plan that I could find. The camera is also quite nice- but I’ll have to see how good the photos come out to really judge that properly- and I’ll be posting a brief review of the phone when I’ve used it for a bit longer.

The first two episodes of Heroes was broadcast on BBC 2 tonight, and I must say that I’m very glad that the BBC have acquired it, as it would be a shame to have it hidden away behind either adverts or a subscription to BSkyB. No spoilers here please. I know we’re amongst the last to get it here.

Last off, I’ll be away from the 29th for a fortnight in Leeds taking a Summer course in East Asian languages (Japanese and East Thai) which I’m really looking forward to.

Wow,
Yesterday I attended Star Wars Celebration Europe, and it was most excellent. After waking at 6am and making my way to London Waterloo station (a record in punctuality for South West trains at only 5 minutes late) I met with Lasse and Peter and travelled to the ExCel center using all manner of different trains, the second of which containing what I’d imagine Darth Vader to look like if he were a seven year old.

<img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2702158_faa6f8f43c_s.jpg" width="75" height="75"alt="I'm your father Luke. AND I EAT BRAINS!" style="float:right;"/> Inside the exhibition we first visited the collection of Vader heads, and then watched a film behind the scenes of the new animated series, after that we walked around the exhibition hall admiring the skill taken to create all the cool costumes and all the miniatures (but they were a bit out of league for my purchasing habits). Also the lego collection present was very cool.

In almost equally exciting news (for you perhaps, but personally I find this much more exciting) my electric guitar has recently arrived. And it is awesome. Unfortunately it did arrive a few days later than originally hoped- but otherwise Thomann have been exceptionally good value and lots of help when I ordered.
