We have some exciting news – after years of procrastination (and a nasty hand injury) Mr MOOMBAKI has decided he definitely needs electric pruning secateurs to get through winter 2022 – and of course they have to be the best in the business – Felco’s or nothing (that’s like the swiss army knife of secateurs). The head-of-accounts has replied that that is a rather large unexpected and unbudgeted expense. So head-of-accounts changed into her marketing fedora and decided we’d best sell a few extra cases of wine this month (week)!

We’ve been noticing in the cellar door that the 2016 Malbec is the hit at the moment, so we thought it might be time to make it wine of the week. It’s rich, dark and earthy and well worth cellaring for a few years if you can hide it away. It was 3 years in the making; handpicked bunches of pristine fruit from our Denmark vines, 30 months in premium tight-grain French oak, and bottled using minimal filtration. We composted last season’s hay – all 700 bales of it – so we could apply it under the vines and sweeten up the soils with all the good stuff; worm castings, effective microorganisms, and great bacteria. It was a pretty big investment for us – $3000 to get our own hay cut but we knew our vineyard needed some extra goodness in the 20th year since we planted. Yes, 20 years!

We’re putting carbon back into the soil from our own paddocks. It’s a major feat but we are making the most of the cooler days (and the fly nets). Now watch those vines grow! It’s all the little things (and big things) that we do that make our vineyard sustainable right now and into the future. When we talk about looking after the ecology of our patch, this is what we are talking about.

When you buy wine from us you are helping us support ongoing projects like the mulching, protecting our wetlands, planting tress and investing in best vineyard practices. And you get to drink some damn good wine (that’s what you call a win-win situation).

Otherwise know as Puppikins, Pupstar, Put-that-down, Gimme-back-my-shirt/sock/pillow – you get the idea … mostly adorable but loves to chew and surprising doesn’t bark a lot (well not as much as Soxy did).

She is a 3/4 Black and Tan Kelpie, 1/4 Blue Heeler (proper farm dog), so she loves a good walk/run/rounding-up. Though we have no sheep to practice on she did a great job with our friend’s Pugs when we recently visited. So far her pet (excuse the pun) dislikes are water (ie bathing and the beach) and loud moving vehicles (which is a good thing!)

She really is sweet and I hope you get to meet her soon …

My favourite tomato, the Black Russian, is once again in season. It has excellent texture and flavour, and is low in acid – YUM!

My other favourite thing this summer has been to make some version of spanish eggs … I take a small frypan (or a large on if there a few of us) and fry up any combination of red onions, garlic, zucchini, lebanese eggplant, or capsicum and a couple of tasty tomatoes (splash of sherry vinegar, pinch of salt, sugar & paprika – I like smoked, and cracked pepper). Once the veggies have softened I make a little well in the pan and crack in an egg (or two, or three), pop a lid on and a couple of minutes later …. the best brunch eggs ever. mmm – might have that for dinner.
