Dear Moniker,

I heard about your website from a friend and decided to order one shirt to see what type of quality I would get. My wife did the measurements according to your website videos so I was a little reserved on how it might turn out. When I got the shirt I was extremely surprised and pleased - the shirt was incredible and fit like a glove.

I can’t imagine what I would have paid for a shirt like this retail.

I’ve never had a custom shirt before but now I will never go back to a store bought shirt. Keep up the great work, I look forward to seeing your new line of fabrics.

Dear Moniker:

I'm writing to let you know just how much my husband enjoys your Shirts!

My husband isn't abnormally tall (6'2") but he has a long torso - causing some difficulty in finding dress shirts that fit appropriately. Some stores carry 'tall' sizes, but then the sleeves tend to be too long and the neck too big and the shoulders hang off of his actual shoulders...and the length of the shirt was still barely long enough. Also, even if the shirt was close to being long enough (to remain tucked in) there was often some of his belly showing if he moved around because there wasn't one last button on the front of the shirt to keep the shirt closed.

I was apprehensive to order something custom over the internet (I order many things over the internet, but not custom sized things ;) ) but your instructions on how to measure were simple and easy to follow.

I enjoy the fact that you can add extras at no extra charge.

Not only are the sizes customized, but I can choose to have other parts of the shirt customized - back vent, rounded bottom or straight, double buttons on the cuffs, french cuffs, corresponding cloth on the inside of the collar - what fun! We're slowly phasing out all of the dress shirts, donating the old ones to charity and slowing replacing them with custom-made ones from Moniker.

We've told all our family to donate to the Moniker Shirt cause.

Thank you Moniker!

Yours,

Angelica - satisfied repeat customer (for a husband that doesn't care about the colors of his shirts, just the way they fit -lucky me, I get to choose all the styles/colors!) :)

Literacy is the basic tool that enables people to debate changes and creatively apply solutions, both in their own lives and within society.

With the help of Moniker’s aggressive 50/50 profit-giving promise, our customers today spun 33 reMarkable Shirts into a poverty-fighting literacy program in Trujillo, Peru.

Public education in Peru is not free. Many families cannot afford its costs. Children struggle to learn in overcrowded classroom without books or other learning tools.

In January 2010 ten teachers -- five Peruvians and five foreign volunteers -- from SKIP, a locally-based NGO, set out to make things better. Already, 170 children in seven classes attend a new primary literacy program 6 days a week, 3 hours a day.

With the support of our customer-philanthropists, Moniker has just supplied the complete set of teaching and reading materials that enable this remarkable program to run.

As part of the program, a full assessment of each student’s reading skills will be administered at the start, middle and end of each school year. We’ll monitor the results and announce achievements regularly.

Today Moniker had an email exchange with a new customer who was concerned to know what would happen if their first shirt failed to meet their expectations.

Here was our reply. It lays out our commitment to everyone, for every Shirt we make:

Dear John,

Custom clothing online is a difficult business in which to deliver customer satisfaction: expectations are high, and the tailor's normal opportunities for getting feedback just aren't available.

That's part of why we're focussed on shirts right now. Moniker could make you a very nice blazer, for example, but we'd be fooling you if we claimed that you could self-measure and expect it to fit as well as one measured by a seasoned professional. Between taking a measurement with a tape and determining what actual measurement to use for the garment pattern (adjusting for posture, shoulder shape, weight distribution and so forth), lies a whole step of professional judgment that only comes with years of experience.

Having said that, Moniker does stand out for the quality of the garments we make -- and the quality of our relationships with the people who wear them. We cannot promise that we will get your shirt exactly right the first time. (For example, we make allowances for shrinkage that are based on experience over thousands of manufactured garments, but who knows exactly how much your dryer will shrink our cotton?)

What we can promise is that we will happily accept your feedback, accept your return, tweak the measurements according to your experience, and try again until we get the pattern right.

What we hope you understand is this: we appreciate that you chose Moniker. In return, we will invest in your satisfaction until you have no reason to go anywhere else for your shirts. If something's wrong, we will fix it, at no charge to you. You've paid for a remarkable, premium garment. We'll keep working until you agree that you've gotten it.

Best,
The Moniker Team

Moniker drafts a custom Shirt pattern for every order, based on the body measurements you give us and the type of fit you specify.

The process is more art than science, because there's no one 'perfect fit' -- it's a matter of personal choice, and only you know the right answer. So, effective immediately, whenever you order a Moniker Shirt, you'll receive an email from our production house within 24 hours notifying you of the final garment dimensions we've set.

We give you the choice to either accept our dimensions, or substitute it with others based on your favorite-fitting shirt.

Our goal is to become the new favorite shirt in your closet; by reviewing and approving the pattern we make for you, you improve our chances!

Here's a quick guide to measure up that best-fitting shirt in your closet for comparison with the pattern for your Moniker Shirt. Photographic and video tutorials are coming soon:

Collar: Lay the collar flat. Measure straight across from the center of the collar button to the far edge of the collar buttonhole

Shoulder: Lay the shirt flat. Measure straight across the yoke (the piece of fabric that spans the shoulders) at its widest point

Chest: Lay the shirt flat. Measure straight across the shirt at armpit level, and multiply the result by 2

Waist: Lay the shirt flat. Measure straight across the shirt at the fifth buttonhole from the top (not counting the collar button). Multiply by 2

Hips: Lay the shirt flat. Measure straight across the bottom of the shirt at its widest point. Multiply by 2

Sleeves: Measure the straight line from the top of the sleeve (the three-way seam where the sleeve meets the yoke and the front panel of the shirt) down to the end of the cuff. Now add 1/2 of the Shoulder measurement, above

Cuffs: Open the cuff and lay the cuff flat. Measure from one edge of the fabric to the other (unlike the collar, the cuff is measured from edge to edge, not from button to buttonhole)

Length: Measure down the back of the shirt, in the center from the bottom of the collar (the seam where the collar meets the yoke), down to the bottom edge of the shirt

A WORD ABOUT SHRINKAGE

Every Moniker Shirt is made from high-quality cotton fabric, and it will shrink in the laundry. When we design your Shirt pattern, we add time-tested shrinkage allowances to compensate.

Our standard shrinkage allowances are:

Collar: add 1"

Shoulder: add 1/2"

Sleeves: add 3/4"

Cuffs: add 3/8"

Length: add 3/4"

So please keep in mind two things if you decide to double-check your Moniker Shirt's pattern against that current favorite in your closet:

If the collar of the best-fitting shirt in your closet measures, say, 16", then your Moniker Shirt's pattern should call for a 17" collar. The same logic applies for the other shrinkage allowances listed above

Launder your Moniker Shirt a few times (3-5) after you receive it to help the cotton to settle into its long-term shape

Remember we're standing by to help you every step of the way. We hope you enjoy this added control over the quality of your finished garment.

So Andy says on the recommendations page of his popular menswear forum. He speaks with experience. Andy's forum clocks over 50,000 threads and 700,000 posts, making it the world's largest continuous mens style discussion since 2001.

The price is unbelievable for the quality of fabric and workmanship.

After placing his order, Andy made use of Moniker's one-of-a-kind 'Pimp My Shirt!' program to add unique touches to his shirt that are rarely offered elsewhere: a different color lining inside the cuffs, a 5th buttonhole cut horizontally and stitched in black, and white thread details throughout. (Everyone is welcome to access this special feature by emailing pimp@monikerwear.com after placing your order and citing your order number along with your special requests.)

The shirts from Moniker are really fantastic, great details, but before I get into that I've got to tell you what fun shopping the Moniker site is.

Andy also recommends Moniker in his forum's Gift Guide and in this discussion thread on his forum.
