Salmon and cream cheese pinwheels are typically served as an appetizer, but they’re also useful for snacks or “fancy” lunches. My kids used to enjoy taking party food in their lunchboxes when they were younger.

Our smoked salmon tortilla pinwheels do have dairy, so they need to stay chilled before serving.

Not a fan of smoked salmon? Here’s a similar pinwheel recipe that’s vegetarian with a ranch cream cheese spread.

What is smoked salmon?

Smoked salmon is a versatile fish that has been cured and then slowly smoked over wood chips. The smoking process gives the salmon with a rich, smoky aroma and a delicate texture.

Whether enjoyed on its own, served on a bagel with cream cheese, or added to salads and pasta dishes, smoked salmon offers a unique taste that is both savory and satisfying.

These salmon tortilla rollups make a nice lunch too, especially when paired with these side dishes for smoked salmon.

Is smoked salmon cooked?

Yes, smoked salmon is considered cooked during the smoking process. The smoking process involves exposing the salmon to low heat and smoke for an extended period, which effectively cooks and preserves the fish.

It is important to note that while smoked salmon is cooked, it is typically served chilled or at room temperature and is not typically reheated before consumption.

Homemade Pumpkin Pie From Scratch

There’s something about making homemade pie crust that intimidates most people. I’ll admit–the store bought ones are tasty. They are so convenient, so I understand the draw.

But when it comes to pumpkin pie, I just prefer a from-scratch crust. I’ll show you an easy way to make this gorgeous pie. It’ll be your go to recipe for the holidays!

Here is what you need to make the pumpkin pie filling:

  • 15 ounces of pumpkin
  • 1 cup of sugar

  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups of half n half

Here’s what you need to make the homemade pie crust:

  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 cups of Crisco
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of white vinegar
  • 1 heaping teaspoon of sugar

Note: you don’t have to use these particular tools. These are just the tools that I used and the things that I think will help you make an amazing homemade pumpkin pie:

Making homemade pumpkin pie from scratch is not as difficult as you might think. My from scratch pumpkin pie calls for canned pumpkin but you can use fresh pumpkin as well! There's nothing better than a homemade pumpkin pie and this recipe is always a crowd pleaser!

Making the pie crust:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, sugar, and Crisco, and cut the Crisco into the flour mixture with a pastry cutter, (like you would with any pie crust) until it resembles pea size pieces.
  2. Add the egg to a 1 cup measuring cup, and beat it with a fork until it’s light colored and frothy.
  3. Add the white vinegar to the egg, and stir.
  4. Fill the measuring cup with water, stir, and pour into the flour mixture.
  5. Mix the flour and egg mixture, until a ball forms. You can use your hands to do this, or a large spoon. You may need to sprinkle with a small amount of flour if the pie crust is too sticky.
  6. Place the ball of crust on a large piece of parchment paper, and roll with a flour covered rolling pin, until your crust is large enough to fit in your pie pan, and come up the edges with enough to crimp; you’ll want about to roll your crust about three or four inches bigger than your pie pan. If the crust sticks to your rolling pin, sprinkle a little more flour on the crust.
  7. Once the crust is rolled, turn in into your pie pan while it’s still on the parchment paper, and remove paper, leaving crust in pie pan.
  8. Smooth your crust into the pan with your fingers, making sure there are no tears in the crust.
  9. Trim off rough edges, but leave enough to put a nice crimped edge around the top of your crust/pan. Crimp the edges with fingers, and set aside.

How many crusts does this recipe make?

This recipe makes approximately four 9-inch pie crusts. You will have enough for multiple pies or for pies and decorative toppings. If you don’t need extra pie crusts or if you are only making one pie you may wish to cut the recipe in half!

Making homemade pumpkin pie from scratch is not as difficult as you might think. My from scratch pumpkin pie calls for canned pumpkin but you can use fresh pumpkin as well! There's nothing better than a homemade pumpkin pie and this recipe is always a crowd pleaser!

How to make the pumpkin pie filling:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the pumpkin, sugar, cinnamon, and salt, and mix until all ingredients are blended.
  2. Add the eggs, and blend well.
  3. Add the half and half, and mix until filling is completely blended.
  4. Pour filling into prepared pie crust, and bake at 425 for 20 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 350, and bake for another 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. When the pie is done, remove from oven to a wire rack to cool.
  6. When pie is completely cool, serve immediately, topped with whipped cream.
  7. If you’re making the pie ahead, cover with waxed paper and them aluminum foil, and refrigerate until time to serve.
  8. Enjoy!

How many pies can I make with this filling recipe?

This filling recipe will make one pie that is about 9 inches. You will need to double or triple the recipe if you need to make extra pies! The recipe has no issues being increased and you won’t run into any weird issues by simple doubling or tripling the recipe.

Can I make this pumpkin pie in advance?

This pie is absolutely delicious, anytime of the year.  It’s an easy pie to make, and bakes up beautifully. Whether you’re making it for guests for an after dinner dessert, or the family, they’re sure to love it, and want seconds.

The crust is flaky and light, and it melts in your mouth. You can make this the day before you’re serving it, and refrigerate it overnight, after a day in the fridge the flavors have a chance to meld and it really comes out amazing!

Making homemade pumpkin pie from scratch is not as difficult as you might think. My from scratch pumpkin pie calls for canned pumpkin but you can use fresh pumpkin as well! There's nothing better than a homemade pumpkin pie and this recipe is always a crowd pleaser!

How do I decorate this pumpkin pie?

  1. For the decorative leaves, and acorns, use fall cookie cutters.
  2. If you do want to decorate the pie with the pie crust leaves and acorns, these cutters make it so easy to do.
  3. You simply roll out your crust on parchment paper to about 1/4 thick, and with the cutters, press the cutter down onto the crust, and then push the leaf, or acorn out with the little button on top, onto a parchment lined cookie sheet, until you have as many as you want.
  4. Bake the decorative leaves and acorns at 350 for about 10 – 12 minutes, or until golden in color. These burn really fast, so you have to watch them while in the oven.
  5. Butter the leaves or acorns with melted butter when they come out of the oven if you don’t sprinkle with sugars.

You can also sprinkle them with colored sugars, or cinnamon sugar before baking for a little extra touch.  You can make a whole tray of these with the colored sugars or cinnamon sugar, or dip them in chocolate after baking for a pretty tray on your dessert table.

What makes this the best turkey meatloaf recipe?

Besides being delicious, I love how incredibly easy this meatloaf is! Basically, you mix all the ingredients in one bowl, press it into the loaf pan, and bake.

This meal is so simple that my tweens and teen know how to make turkey meatloaf, and it comes out great each time. They feel so accomplished! If your kids are younger, let them help with measuring and mixing.

You may have noticed that packages of ground turkey come in different sizes. For some reason, they’re often 20 ounces rather than 1 pound like ground beef. This easy recipe is meant for a 20-oz package. We love how moist and juicy this meatloaf comes out!

If you use more or less ground turkey, keep in mind that you want the dry bread crumbs to balance out the moistness of the turkey and the other wet ingredients, so you may need to change the amount accordingly.

How to make Turkey Meatloaf

This recipe just can’t be any easier! Start by separating out the mustard, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce that will go on top.

Then, put all the other ingredients into one large bowl. I use a rubber spatula to mix it all up.

Press the meatloaf mixture into a prepared loaf pan. If you don’t have one, just shape it into a loaf and bake in a 9×12 baking dish instead.

Spread the sauce of ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire on top, and let it bake!

Is this a gluten-free turkey meatloaf?

It is not, because it uses breadcrumbs. If you prefer, use gluten-free breadcrumbs or check out How to Make Meatloaf without Bread Crumbs, which uses oats instead.

When is turkey meatloaf done?

I use a digital thermometer to be sure that the ground turkey reaches 165 degrees. Remember that after it bakes for an hour, you want to let it sit for at least 5 minutes.

That’s why we often don’t make this on weeknights, there just isn’t time!

Baked meatloaf

Is there any way to make it faster?

Yes, just use a cupcake tray instead of a loaf pan. Spray each cup with nonstick cooking spray, then press the meatloaf mixture in until 3/4 full. Bake at the same temperature, but check the temperature at 35 minutes.

What side dishes go with turkey meatloaf?

This easy turkey meatloaf is one of our favorite weekend dinners! We usually make baked potatoes and Roasted Brussels Sprouts to serve on the side.

Another favorite is Roasted Broccoli and Cauliflower. Next time, I’d like to try these Oven Roasted Parmesan Green Beans from Ann’s Entitled Life.

If you’re eating low-carb, just skip the starches and serve turkey meatloaf with a large salad or other side dish vegetables.

What do I need to prepare this turkey meatloaf?

I have a tiny kitchen, so I value each and every item in it. I don’t keep anything that doesn’t get used often! These are my favorite supplies to make this turkey meatloaf:

There are 7,500 apple varieties worldwide, each with its own shades and sizes. 2,500 grow in the United States and are exported to several countries, including Hong Kong, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and India. They’re one of the most widely consumed fruits due to their culinary versatility and remarkable flavors.

Apples make the most nutritious snacks, whether you prefer to eat them on their own or as an ingredient in savory meals. They are also commonly used in pies, salads, smoothies, muffins, and other recipes. Of course, you can use any variety in your favorite recipes, but apple flavors and textures vary.

Some apples are sweeter and are better for baking pies, while others are spicier and crunchier and pair well with savory dishes! Ultimately, the choice of apples depends on the recipe and how you plan to balance the flavors.

Which apples are best for dinner recipes?

Fuji apples are known for their sweet, crunchy flavor. They have a mild taste yet stand out without overpowering the rest of the palate. When cooked, it doesn’t get too mushy and really holds up to enhance every recipe.

Winesap apples have a sweet and spicy flavor that blends perfectly with savory ingredients. The spicy, wine-like nuances hold up well against spices like cinnamon. This is one of the most popular varieties for cider making, salads, and applesauce.

Pink lady apples also blend well with savory dishes, with their crunchy texture and sweet-yet-sharp flavor. They brown slower than other apples, so they are a popular option for salads, sandwiches, and cheese boards.

Feel free to incorporate these apples (or other varieties, if not available) into your delicious dinner meals! If needed, use an apple corer to make meal preparation easier.

What meats go well with apples?

When we think about apples, we remember yummy desserts and appetizers. The truth is apples also work as wonderful additions to chicken, pork, and turkey meals.

Their sweet, spicy and crunchy elements play incredibly well with meat and other savory ingredients. Find the best apple and meat pairing that suits your taste. You can even use this fruit for cooking the best vegan meals you can enjoy every night!
