8 Tips for Building Community on Your Blog

1. Start with Comments

Perhaps the most natural place to start to build ‘community’ on a blog is within its comments section. This is a good place because in our day and age it is a place that most web users are ‘wired’ to look for interactivity in. The keys in building community within your comments section include:

Ask Questions in posts (this will draw comments out of readers)
Interact with Readers (if you’re not willing to comment why would others - this gets the ball rolling)
Model the type of comments and tone you want (if you want people to feel safe and at home you need to police and moderate the trolls and spammers)
Followup Questions (answer questions whether they be in comments or via email)

2. Reader Centered Posts

Show readers that you value them by regularly publishing posts that are ALL about them. There are lots of ways of doing this including:

Answering Reader Questions
Inviting Questions from Readers
Posting a Question for discussion
Highlighting a reader and their blog, comment, site

The key is to regularly build into the rhythm of your blog moments where your readers take centre stage and have an opportunity to contribute and be valued.

3. Interactive Tools and Projects

Whether it be running weekly polls, using quizzes, running a competition in your comments section or some other interactive tool or project - the more you get your readers to ‘do’ something the more ownership that they’ll feel over your site. I find that even the anonymous voting in a poll has the power to make a reader feel connected.

4. Invite Reader Generated Content

I’ve talked about reader generated content in an earlier post in this series with regards to how it can help you keep fresh content on your site - but the other benefit of it is that it can help readers grow in their connection to your blog.

The way I grew reader generated content on my photography site was simply to start a photography tutorials area of the forum there. In that area I invited readers to submit their tips. The idea was that the area would help identify readers from within the community who had a talent and passion for teaching others. I’ve since used some of the best tutorials on the main blog and one or two of the authors have become regular writers.

5. Become a Cheer Leader

Look for any opportunity that you can to cheer your community along. I regularly attempt to give feedback to DPS readers on how well ‘we’ are doing as a community. When ‘we’ hit a new milestone in terms of forum members or traffic numbers I talk about it in our newsletter, when ‘we’ get mentioned in a mainstream publication I make note of that….

My approach with this feedback to readers isn’t to highlight how good ‘I’ am as a blogger - but to show the community what ‘we’ have achieved. I find that each time I do this that the feedback has been excellent and that it spurs readers on to help us grow and become even better.

6. Give Readers Jobs

I wrote about this a couple of years ago now but one of the best ways to build a sense of engagement and ownership within your readership is to give readers jobs. You can’t do this with everyone of your readers but it is amazing how many people don’t want to just read and consume - they want to be a part of building something that matters. ‘Jobs’ can be anything from getting them to help you moderate comments, to being a forum moderator, to coming up with poll topics, to judging competitions, to writing guest posts etc

7. Set Reader Homework

Another great way to get a little more interactivity and buy in from readers is to set them homework in your posts. This is particularly effective when you have a ‘tips’ or ‘how to’ type blog where you’re teaching people and it is a natural way to finish a post to say ‘go and do this’.

Again at DPS we have a photography assignment area in our forum where we have a weekly assignment for readers to go away and complete before reporting back with an image that they’ve taken. Heaven forbid if we miss a weekly assignment - our readers would be up in arms!

You don’t need a forum area dedicated to this to set homework. Just end a post with an invitation to go and do something and to report back on how they did and you’ll find a percentage of your readers will complete the task and in doing so will feel more loyalty to you and your blog.

8. Give multiple avenues to ‘join’ or be a ‘member’

I’ve mentioned a few times above the forum at DPS.Search DPS forum with my google search you can join with they member. I can’t express to you just how powerful that area of the site has become. While it doesn’t have as many unique visitors each month as the blog segment of the site - it is visited by a growing number of hardcore DPS fans who are visiting on a daily basis and really creating an amazing community there.

Similarly - adding a weekly newsletter to the site has created another ‘connecting point’ with readers and a gentle reminder each week to stop by the blog and or forum to interact. I’ve found that having a blog, forum and newsletter to be a lot of work but a fantastic way to engage with different readers in ways that appeal to their learning style. Many readers have connected in 2 and even 3 of these ways - each time they access a new part of the site they ‘buy in’ just a little more.

One last tip

Above all, the best way of building a community on your blog is to lead the way and start to BE the community that you want to form. This is something that will bring the 8 tips above to life…. or…. if you don’t do it is likely to ensure that you fail in building community on your blog. Readers will take your lead but are unlikely to want to join a community if you as the leader of it seems ambivalent about the whole thing.

The article, 5 easy ways to make money online with Photoshop by Enrique Flouret, started out with 5 excellent tips on how to earn cash from your Photoshop experience. After some feedback from readers, two additional tips were added to the list. Now, I’m adding three more bonus tips/ideas to the list.

Anyway, I’m going to start with a quick summary of the tips with my thoughts on them. Then, I’ll share three additional ideas for those who wish to look more in to this avenue of making money online (tip #s 8 to 10). Make sure you read the original article as it elaborates on Tip #s 1 to 7.

Tip #1: Create Photoshop brushes or other goodies and sell them online.

An excellent idea. However, this may require a more advanced knowledge of using Photoshop. You will also need to know where and how to sell these products. One option, of course, is to offer them through download sites. Another option is to have your own website where you can sell your creations.

Tip #2: Create your own gift store with your artwork.

If you’re an artist, designer, or slogan-maker, this is one good option. Knowledge of Photoship may range between novice to expert. Anyway, one of the author’s suggestions is to offer stuff via CafePress, of course. But, it also lists other CafePress alternatives, including some of the ones I noted here.

Tip #3: Participate on contests.

Here, the author comes up with a list of places where you can take part in Art/Design contests using Photoshop. Sometimes, the rewards of these competitions are not just monetary. In any case, they can be great fun, useful for building up a portfolio, and may lead to more lucrative jobs

Tip #4: Write your own tutorials.

The basic idea is to set up a website, write tutorials, post them on your site, and put advertising on your site. Nothing revolutionary, but definitely worth considering. It’ll be especially rewarding if you can sell affiliate products that may compliment your income. Tip #5: Sell your photographs or illustrations.

Tip #6: Create and sell your own Photoshop plugins.

Again, like tip #1, it’s definitely a great idea. Even better, since this is something that not many people can do, as it requires a high level of expertise. And, if you can come up with a stellar idea for a plugin, then you can watch your income add up.

Tip #7: Write something thatâ€™s cool or unique.

This tip is mostly an extension of tip #4, but instead of submitting your article to tutorial directories and/or coming up with a website filled with articles on Photoshop, this leads to the possibility of just creating a snippet of content on a blog that may be picked up by bigger blogs or sites and linked to.

Now, for my additional tips/ideas:

Tip #8: Offer your Photoshop expertise and be an online tutor.

You can create learning packages and turn these in to an online course, an ebook, or a web workshop. Check out Online Education for some ideas.

Tip #9: Be an “on call expert” or consultant.

If you want to offer your services as a consultant, you can do so using your own resources or third party resources.

Tip #10: Be a Photoshop content provider.

If you’re not keen on creating a full website with plenty of Photoshop tutorials (tip #4), and you want to do more than just write bits and pieces of cool Photoshop stuff (tip #7), then you might want to consider another option if you like the idea of writing. With the advent of blogs and blogging networks, one idea is to come up with a Photoshop (or related broader subject matter) blog and monetise that either on your own as an independent blogger - or as a network blogger where you can possibly get paid on a regular basis for the content you provide. However, if keeping a blog regularly is too much of a commitment for you, another alternative is simply to write content whenever you have the time or inclination to do so. Of course, the best way to make money from this is to treat it like a freelance writing gig — approach magazines, web publications, etc that may be interested in publishing Photoshop-related articles. Or, if that’s too daunting for you, you can also try using content sites like Constant Content.

It’s not that it is easier to make money blogging compared to regular websites because I’m not sure it is but there is no getting away from the fact that blogs are quicker to get up and running, Google prefers blogs so they are quicker to rank (although they may have a shorter shelf life) and you can find a plug-in for just about any task you have in mind.

Probably the reason that swings the pendulum in favor of blogging for money rather than websites though is that thanks to Article marketing Automation there is a constant supply of fresh content on tap for all those blogs those of us who play the numbers game build.

Competition in the Blogosphere

According to Technorati there were 120,000 new blogs being created every day back in March 2007. That was 5000 an hour or nearly 2 a second and it will be many more by now.

You would think it would be impossible to ever make money blogging with all that competition but how many of those new bloggers are hoping to make money and out of the one’s that are hoping, how many of them actually know how to?

One of the first things I noticed with the articles being published on my blogs from people using Article Marketing Automation is that there are a lot of marketers that simply do not know what they are doing. The most common error for instance is linking to their own blogs using “click here” as the anchor text rather than the keywords they hope to rank for.

Why would you sign up and pay to use a link building system when obviously you don’t understand the principles of linking?

Another reason the competition isn’t as bad as it first appears is that 95% of people trying to make money online will no longer be within a year. They buy an ebook and follow the instructions until a week later the next big thing comes out. They fall for the sales pitch that promises riches even quicker than the first one so they start following the new plan and drop last weeks.

This goes on for up to a year until eventually the person takes stock of how much they have spent trying to make money online and realizes they have spent far more than they have made and there ends the career of another wannabe online entrepreneur.

Of course, those that give up are replaced by yet more newbies eager to buy the latest ebooks and courses promising untold wealth for a “few minutes work.” The 5% that stuck it out past the 12 month mark though have a significant advantage over the new crop as they have broken out of that cycle and are now getting on with rinsing and repeating a system they have found works for them.

Get Blogging

Always remember that to make money blogging you are playing nothing more than a numbers game. Once you can generate traffic to your blog you will make money and the amount will be directly related to your traffic figures.

Knowing this you can either go for building one ASC authority blog that will eventually pull in the required numbers you need to meet your monetary goal or you can build several that split the required amounts needed between them or even build hundreds of blogs so that each only requires a few visitors but between them pull in your targets.

Monetize straight away with Adsense as it will encourage you as you see your earnings grow with your traffic. Once you reach your targets you can then buy a few courses on affiliate marketing and list building and increase your profits even more.

Don’t wait and think about it, get started straight away. You can’t make money blogging until you actually have a blog and start blogging!

Five Ways to Drive Traffic to your Blog When you blog for money you need to create your own content (and lots of it!), implement advertisement programs like Google AdSense and WidgetBucks, and last but not least – you need traffic. In our offline lives we dread it, but online we embrace it. I want to give you 5 ways to start driving traffic to your blog today. With a little time and patience, you will slowly start to increase your viewer ship. (In no particular order) 5.) Post comments on other blogs. Blogs are everywhere – there’s certainly not a shortage of them. You should have no problem finding other bloggers in your niche that are popular and interesting. Bookmark those that you like, follow their topics daily, and if you find something that sparks your interest – comment. Become a participating voice in the community. The more interesting your comments are, the more likely your peers will follow you to your blog. And who knows – you might stand out among the crowd and be recognized by the author, which can spin off into better opportunities. 4.) Register with blog networks like: Technorati, BlogCatalog, and MyBlogLog It’s important that you get your blog out there for others to see. You can start the process by submitting to search engines, but that’s just the beginning. Technorati, BlogCatalog, and MyBlogLog are just a few of the high profile blog networks on the web. Register with them, network with other people in your releated area, and get your word out. When you register with these services remember a couple of things: 1.) Create a detailed profile. Let people know a little bit about you and draw them in. Without that personal interaction people may flee quickly. 2.) Tag your blog properly. Tags are very important – they’re usually one or two word descriptions of your blog. So for example my blog would fall under categories like: Money, Business, and Finance. Dig around the specific service and look for popular tags and try to use those for your blog. It allows people who are interested in these topics to easily find your site. 3.) Register with several forums. Do a Google search for forums that are related to your niche and register. Try to be an active voice in the community. People will flock to you if you’re interesting. Not only that but it allows you to find out what others are doing and what makes them appealing. When you register with a forum, make sure to fill out the profile, similar to the blogging services. And equally as important – make a signature that is a direct link to your blog. Your signature is shown in every post that you make – helping you gain visibility. This is all the more reason to create thought provoking discussions. 2.) Social Bookmarking and Article Submission. Social networking, bookmarking, and article submissions are all the rage today – don’t let it pass you by. Some of the major networks include delicious, Furl, and of course, Digg. These sites will allow you to tag, bookmark, and submit articles that you think are interesting. What’s more interesting than your own work? People should know about it so go spread the word. 1.) StumbleUpon StumbleUpon really falls into tip #2, but I decided to break it away from the pack because it provides quicker results. Like the rest of the social networking sites, you create a profile and network with others. But what makes StumbleUpon so darn unique, is that you can “stumble” thousands of sites that you’re interested in by the click of a button. So what does that mean for you? Well, you can stumble your own site. By doing this you get into the Stumble rotation, and any people that you network with can stumble across it as well. In my experience StumbleUpon can bring great surges of traffic for short periods of time. Due to the nature of the service, you’re likely to get overlooked more than not; however, those that do stop – tend to stay. And if they like the site, they can rate it and review it for all the friends in their network to see. Are you getting the picture here? Your viewer ship has the potential to explode! As with most things in life, there’s no silver bullet for getting traffic. It takes a lot of research, careful planning, networking, patience, and time. How to Make Money From Your Blog - Direct Methods Blogging for Dollars Having thought through whether you should blog for money it is now worth taking a look at some of the different models for doing so. I tend to break the different models that bloggers are using to make money from blogging into two areas - Direct and Indirect methods. Direct Income Earning Methods - these methods are where a blogger earns an income directly FROM their blog. Indirect Income Earning Methods - these methods are where a blogger earns an income BECAUSE of their blog. Most blogs tend to fall into one or the other of these methods - although there is nothing to stop bloggers experimenting with elements of both ( I’ve seen a few bloggers get into trouble with this (example: Scenario 1 in the previous post). In this post I’ll look at 8 direct income earning methods and in the next post of this series I’ll explore indirect methods. Please note that on occasion in the following post there will be few affiliate links to services that I use and have had some success with. These will be marked with (aff) after them. Direct Income Earning Methods for Bloggers 1. Advertising There are many ways of selling advertising space on a blog (this could almost be a series of it’s own) but some of the different advertising options that I see bloggers experimenting with include: * Contextual Advertising - Programs like AdSense and YPN (beta) are very popular with bloggers and are probably the most common income stream being used by them today (MSN are developing one too). In short - these programs scan the content of your blog to assertion what it’s topic is and attempt to put contextually relevant ads (text and image) onto your blog. They are generally simple to use and involve pasting some code into your blog’s templates. Payment is on a ‘per click’ basis (referred to as CPC or ‘cost per click’ ads). Contextual ads suit blogs that have a particular niche topic, especially if it has some sort of commercial angle (ie it has products and services associated with it). They are not so good with ‘general’ type blogs (ie many topics) and/or political/spiritual blogs which argue just one side of a case (this confuses AdSense). I write much more extensively on how to use AdSense on your blog here. * Other CPC Advertising - There are a variety of other ad systems that pay on a per click basis which are not contextual in nature (which is important as systems like AdSense do not allow you to run contextual ads on the same page view as them). These systems include Chitika’s eMiniMalls (aff) which I reviewed here. * Impression Based Ads - Impression based ads pay a small amount for every person who views the advertisement. The amount that they pays varies from program to program (and ad to ad) and is generally a fraction of a cent. There are a variety of ad systems around like this including Fastclick (aff) which I reviewed here and Tribal Fusion. Impression based ads won’t earn you much if you don’t have a lot of traffic but can be great if you do. * Blog Ads - BlogAds have become something of an institution when it comes to advertising on blogs. They traditionally have had a focus upon monetizing political blogs but are expanding their focus lately. The beauty of them is that bloggers set their own rates and can accept or reject advertisers that apply to them to be featured on their blogs. These ads put the control of what ads show and how much they earn into the hands of the blogger. The downside is that if you price them too high you could never have any ads showing at all. They can also be difficult to be accepted into as a publisher as these days they only accept people into the system if they have a someone who is already in ’sponsor’ or recommend the new publisher. * Text Ads - Another increasingly popular way to sell ads on your blog is to look into text links. The beauty of these are that they don’t take up much room and that depending upon the system you choose to run them you can have control over which advertisers you accept and reject. AdBrite (aff) is one such system that gives you control in a similar way to BlogAds in that you set your own prices and approve all ads. They also other other formats of ads. Text Link Ads (aff) is another text link seller that more and more bloggers are using. The beauty of both of these systems is that they have a pool of advertisers already so you don’t have to go looking for your own advertisers. Their systems are also both very automated and are just a matter of pasting some code onto your blog. I use them both and while they don’t earn anywhere near as much as AdSense or Chitika for me they add up over the year and have done well for me. Bidvertiser and Adzaar are other system that I know are popular with some (we’ve used them quite successfully on b5media although I have little personal experience with them). * RSS Ads - An increasingly popular way for people to read blogs is via RSS. As a result publishers and ad providers have been keen to find ways to place ads in feeds. These attempts have been met with a variety of success levels. I’m yet to hear of too many people making big dollars with RSS ads yet but the ad systems seem to be improving. AdSense offers RSS ads to some of it’s publishers (you have to have a certain number of impressions first) as does YPN. Feedburner is a tool I’ve used to help monetise my own feeds - they give publishers three options (1. AdSense if you’ve been approved by them, 2. Amazon affiliate program and 3. if you have a lot of subscribers (over 500) they have an Ad Network). Pheedo is another system that you might like to try (although I’ve not had much experience with it). * Other Ads Systems - In addition to the above systems (most of which I’ve used myself) are many other advertising options which I’ve not had experience with and so won’t personally recommend. I’m sure they are worth experimenting with however as I see many of them being used by bloggers every day. Here they are in no particular order: * AdGenta, CrispAds, Clicksor, Intelli Txt, Peak Click, Double Click, Industry Brains, AdHearUs, Kanoodle, AVN, Pheedo, Adknowledge, YesAdvertising, RevenuePilotTextAds, SearchFeed, Target Point, OneMonkey, and TextAds. Feel free to add your own and tell us how you’ve gone with them in comments below. 2. Sponsorship Another form of advertising that a smaller number of bloggers are using is to find their own advertisers. All of the above systems have the advantage of finding you advertisers (or at least assisting in the automation of ads to your blog) but as your blog grows in profile and influence you might find other options for private deals come up. The big blog networks have people dedicated to the task of finding advertisers (often working through ad agencies) but smaller bloggers might find this worthwhile also. I’ve been selling ads on my Digital Camera Blog for two years now and as it’s grown in traffic and profile and managed to attract larger companies (who are willing to pay more) to buys space. Currently the blog features ads from Adobe who have bought a combination of banner, newsletter and text ads. The key if you’re going to take this approach is to target advertisers in your niche that have products that closely relate to what you’re writing about. There are a variety of ads that you can offer them including banner ads, buttons, text links, mentions in newsletters and even individual post sponsorships. I would highly recommend that you always make it clear to readers that your post is a sponsored one when you’re writing a sponsored post. 3. Affiliate Programs Affiliate programs are where you take a commission for referring a reader who purchases a product or service to a company. Probably the most common of these for bloggers is Amazon which has tens of thousands of products that you can link to (I reviewed it here). Other affiliate programs that represent many different companies and products include Linkshare, Commission Junction and Clickbank. Affiliate programs take some work if you want to get the most out of them (perhaps more work than advertising) but can be lucrative if you match the right program with the right blog/topic. Selling/Flipping Blogs The idea of selling (or flipping) your blog is one that many bloggers have in the back of their minds for ‘one day’ but in reality it is not something that is overly common… yet (I think this is changing). Probably the largest sale is that of Weblogs Inc (a network of blogs) which sold to AOL for a reported $25 million. Of course this is the stuff that most of us can only dream of - but there are examples of smaller blogs being sold, either privately or via auctions on sites like eBay and SitePoint. One such auction was that of the Blog Herald which took place here. Starting a blog with the main goal of selling it down the track is one that I’ve heard of a number of bloggers doing but few have been successful. Rather than starting with this intention I think if you start with the intention of building a quality site that has a large readership and it’s own good income stream you are more likely to find buyers down the track. 5. Donations and Tip Jars A very small number of blogs have a history of making good money with these (Jason Kottke being one of them). To be successful with asking for money from readers you’ll want to have a large and loyal readership (and a rich one might help too). Most bloggers just don’t have the critical mass or the cult following to make it work. 6. Merchandise Another method that some blogs use with reasonable effect is to sell T-Shirts, Mugs, Stickers etc with the blog’s name, logo and/or taglines on it. This is another idea that will probably only work if you either have a brilliantly designed merchandise range and/or you have a cult-like status as a blogger with some fanatical readers who are a little obsessive about your blog. Some blog topics lend themselves to this more than others. 7. Selling Subscriptions The idea of charging readers for content is one that surfaces from time to time. While there are numerous websites around the web that do this successfully (community membership sites) I’m yet to see many (any) blogs do it well. The problem that most bloggers who have tried it have run into is that most topics that you could think to start a blog about already have free sites available. To make it succeed you would need to have some sort of premium/exclusive content and/or real expertise on a topic. 8. Blog Networks Another emerging income source for bloggers are blog networks. There are two ways to make money here. Firstly you can start a network and contract bloggers to write for you or secondly you might like to join a blog network as a writer. There are many networks out there and all have their own strengths and weaknesses. I’ll attempt to write a post on what to think about when you’re looking at whether to join a network later in this series.
