Traffic Tactics For Driving Free Traffic

If you been online long enough with your blog or website, you know it is all about traffic, and I’m sure you have tried many traffic tactics that may or may not have worked.

The reason for top gurus true success online is more about the amount of traffic they get, and not so much that they know more then you.

We all want more traffic to our blogs and if we can get Free traffic it makes it that much more exciting.

There are many traffic tactics out there to get you free traffic, like using social media, but that has been talked about many times before.

Today I wanted to share a few tips that I have used and still use today that you may or may not have heard about before.

Some are more powerful then others, but they all work. Sometimes the simplest things are the more effective.

Keep ADDING fresh, relevant, content

When it comes to writing content with keywords, think big. You want your blog to be found via THOUSANDS of different phrases every month.

Also, search engines prefer fresh sites which keep gradually adding new content. Don’t let your site go stale.

This can also be done with articles, apply the same techniques. Shoot for one article a day.

Make your domain name easy to read

Which of the following is easier to read and understand?

www.johnpaulaguiar.com or  www.JohnPaulAguiar.com

See how using a capital letter at the start of each word makes the second domain name easier to read – and easier to remember… Simple right?

Whenever you mention your url anywhere, ALWAYS use the caps version. A good place to start doing this is in your email signature file, and social sites profiles.

This will make your url easier to read and remember.

Use keywords in your image file names

My blog gets 200 – 300 visits a month from images, it may not be the best quality, but it free and I don’t have to do any work for them, and that’s a Win-Win for me

Google Images – http://images.google.com – makes it easy for people to search for graphics online.

Now when choosing the file name of an image on your blog, use one of your key phrases, for example, “dog-beds.jpg” if you’re promoting dog beds.

You can also take this a step further and use the same keywords in your ALT tag for your image.

Do your keyword research.

I know I know, doing keyword research isn’t a big secret.. but it is SOOO important I had to add it here.

If you want to get LOTS of traffic from search engines, you need to find out the exact phrases which people are typing into search engines. There are free tools available for this, but they’re not nearly as useful as the more comprehensive paid tools.

I use Google AdWords Tool

I like to choose keywords with a monthly search volume under 10,000. But this is all relative. It all depends on your PR rank, how well your blog and post is SEO optimized.

So for a blog that doesn’t have a high PR rank, and doesn’t have his SEO stuff together as much as he would want, then stick to keywords with a monthly search volume under 3,000.
This gives you the best chance to get on page 1.

Include keywords in your social site profiles

Whenever you create an online profile, like on a forum or on sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter – always use carefully chosen key phrases.

This increases the chance that people will find you, either via search engines. The goal here is to associate your name and blog url with your main keywords everywhere online that you can.

You need to become an Online Graffiti Artist, tag everything you see

Write free reports or white papers

Write a free ebook or free report and ask bloggers and newsletter publishers to give it away.

This one I havn’t done, but I know friends that have and it works for them very well.

Submit your free ebook to ebook directories

Search in Google for “ebook directory” and “ebook directories” and list your free ebook everywhere you can.

Upload and tag your photos

This traffic tactics tip is my favorite right now. Upload images to Flickr, and add your keyword tags to them.

You do this for 2 reasons

images may pop up on Google image searches

people on Flickr will see it read it and if they like what they read, they will go to your blog to read the rest of the post.

I have been doing this with a image of each of my posts, then I tag it with the keyword I used in my post, and add my first 2 sentences into the description, then I add my url into the image where they can go read the full post.

I am still testing this but so far I am happy with the results.

Get links from eBay

Set up an account at eBay and on your “About Me” page, link to your blog.

Now anytime you sell something, people will read your profile to see who you are.  You can also write a ebook and sell it on ebay for like $1 and reach more targeted eyes.

Another benefit is the powerful backlink you now have from eBay.

Start an affiliate program

Start your own affiliate program and get hundreds of affiliates
to spread the word about your product.

I did this with my Twitter Dummy Affiliate Program,  now I don’t have hundreds of affiliates yet, I do have a few that send me traffic daily.

The simplest, cheapest way is to set up your affiliate program is to use E-Junkie

Simple to set up, with traffic and link luv benefits.

Signature file IS important

I know your thinking  “JP, this is a ridiculous traffic tactic”  and maybe your right, BUT!

This tip is VERY basic, yet I get emails everyday from “top” bloggers and marketers that don’t use this.

You should be adding a signature file to the bottom of EVERY email you send – to anyone.

Here’s my simple sig file that goes out on every email…

See the url caps?

Using a sig file like this gives your reader a reminder where they can find you on your blog or Twitter and Facebook.

Another reason is people sometimes forget who you are, so it is nice to have that info there that they can visit and remember.

There you go, some known and not so known traffic tactics that will drive traffic to your blog.

I’ll end it like this, no matter how simple or common a tip is, it is useless unless you USE IT!

Now will these traffic tactics drive huge traffic for you? Probably not, but they will drive traffic for little to no effort on your part, so why not implement them?

Blogging isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, actually more and more people and businesses are seeing the benefits to why they need to start a blog.

Now that you know what it takes to build a successful blog, I want to share the reasons why I believe you need to start a blog right now. Yes Now..

1- Ok I put this first since this has been an ongoing issue for me haha  But I am getting better, to my defense, “I think faster then I type”

Ok Writing on a blog will help you become a better writer with less spelling and grammar mistakes.

2-  Your blog is a good place to let your personality shine, the more of you you show the more your readers will relate.

or niche and build a community with readers that have the same interests.

4-  If you didn’t know, a blog is really the best place to promote a service or product, even more so now with all the social media traffic you can get, they will be happier going to a blog to learn more then a sales page.

5-  The best part of having a blog is It Is YOUR Blog, you can say and share whatever you want, you have the complete freedom.

6-  Having a blog can and will make you money, if you put the time and work in to drive enough traffic to it.

7-  A blog can land you a job opportunity, especially if your blog is popular, you never know who will visit your blog next.

8-  It has become so easy to start a blog today that there is no reason why everyone doesn’t have one.  You don’t need design or coding skills, Wordpress or even Blogger have ready made blogs for you to get up and running.

9-  Posting to your blog is a great way to get quick feedback on something you need help with.

10-  Having a blog is a great place to write detailed product reviews to share with your readers.

11-  Blogs are the best way to get Google traffic, Google luvs blogs and with Worpress, your blog is ready made to be SEO optimized with a few simple tweaks.

12-  If you have a small businesses, then having a blog is a MUST do, whether you use it just to communicate with your existing customers or for marketing and promotion purposes.

13-  Blogging can be fun, especially with many of todays add-ins and plug-ins that let you customize your blog. For me the fun comes in with some of the comments I receive or see on other blogs..lol

14-  Many bloggers have turned their blogs into published books, who knows you might end up with your own book one day.  Look at Gary V and ProBlogger.

The possibility and opportunity is there.. up to you to chase it down.

15-  With your blog you will talk to people from all over the world, people you would never have met without your blog.

I have to say this has been a nice bonus to my blog, meeting people from other countries and get a peek into their lifestyle and culture.

16-  Having a blog and writing on it will help you realize just how much useful information you have on your blogs topic.  Seems the more I write the more I know.

17-  Your blog is a great place to share your lessons good and bad with your readers, better more if your lessons have to do with your blogs topic.

This will be helpful to your readers and at same time help you build that all important relationship with your readers.

18-  Having a blog will help you stay current with what is happening within your niche.  I have found some great articles from people that have left comments on my blog.

19-  Regularly posting on your blog is a great way to build accountability and give your readers a place to visit regularly to get helpful information.

20-  Your blog is the best place for you to send all your new followers from Twitter, Facebook and now Digg.  You want to connect and engage readers on social sites, and invite them back to your blog to continue to build that relationship.

But your main goal is to make those social site friends your new blog friends, where you have full control of the relationships.

There is my small list of the reason you need to start a blog today, and I know, There are about a million good reasons.

How To Increase Your RSS Subscribers

Since I have been on a “How To” post kick, I wanted to continue on that and share my tips on getting more RSS subscribers.

Ok now why do you want more RSS subscribers?  Basically it is the easiest way to get a new post in front of your readers. Look at it like making a sale, it is easier to sell something to someone who has bought from you before, then it is to make a sale to a new customer.

RSS works the same way, you are getting a new post in front of readers that have been to your blog before and like it.

You can signup for RSS feed or email feed, I use both and I recommend you do the same since many people still don’t know what RSS is or know how to use it, but they all know how to use email.

Below is a small list of things you can do to boost your chances of getting you more subscribers.

Write Kick Ass Content

Yes, this is another place where great content matter, why would a visitor want to subscribe to read more of your crap content? Be unique, be fresh, be helpful, and be entertaining. The good news is you can learn to write better, it just takes practice to find what works for you.

Keep Your RSS Button Front and Center

Readers won’t subscribe if they can’t easily find your RSS button, no brainer right? Haha

So keep it at top of your blog in the header or top of the sidebar. People usually look for something orange, I used a green button to match my blog, but I plan to test different colors to see which works best. Try to use something designed that stands out.

Place Your RSS Button Everywhere

You want to promote your RSS feed everywhere on your blog, but don’t go over board with this.

A few places to use are at the top of your blog, in the sidebar, at the end of each post and at the bottom of your blog. I would use 2-3 of these places at once for best results. I have my feed in my header and recently at the bottom of each post and this has been working well so far.

Offer Email RSS Feed

As I mentioned above, there are still a lot of people that have no idea what a RSS feed is. But those same readers know what email is and use email everyday.  So they will be more comfortable subscribing to your email feed.

So make sure you offer an email subscribe button as well so you are not pushing away potential new subscribers. I have mine placed right beside my RSS button.

Once You Have Some Subscribers – Show It Off

There really is no set number to reach before you show off your subscriber counts, but I would say anything after 500.

Why do this? It is “social proof” that people like what you’re doing, they will follow suit and subscribe because they don’t want to miss out on what all those other people are seeing.

I share my numbers “all in one”, you see at top “Join The 72,000 Following John Paul”  this shares all my followers, Twitter, Email, and RSS subscribers.

This has worked very well, it gets their attention, which was my goal.

Just Ask!

Yes the biggest and best tip I can share, is to JUST ASK!

There is nothing wrong with adding a sentence at the end of your post or dropping a tweet every now and then that invites people to subscribe to your feed. Ask and you shall receive, right?

That’s it, some of my tips on getting more RSS subscribers.

You first need to decide what you want from your blog, do you want newsletter signups, or do you want RSS subscribers.

Focus on one and make the other available for readers to see. I believe focusing to much on both at once will hurt results for both in the end. Your readers will start to feel you’re asking to much of them, and may decide to do nothing.

Steps To Improve Google Rankings

Today I wanted to share some basic steps to getting higher Google rankings for your blog.

I have follow these steps combined with My Crazy Simple 7 Step Plan To Promote A New Post steps to rank pretty well over the last 6 months, proof below

No one really know what step works best or what steps Google puts more weight on, but what I do know, is if you do them all you will see your blog ranking higher.

These are the 9 Steps I believe matter most when you want to boost your Google rankings.

Recommended 9 Steps…

1.Use Keywords In Title Tags.

Probably the most important and simplest

thing to do no matter what niche your blog is in. Your title tag must be consistent with content in the page or post for best results. This is a

“less is more”  kinda thing, since having to many keywords in your title tag will have a negative effect.

2. Create Quality Anchor Text.

SEO professionals believe that having quality anchor text links coming into your blog is important and I agree with them. Since that is the link people chose to click to come to your blog. Keep your anchor text targeted to the page the link is going to.

If your anchor text link is for SEO Tips, then you want to make sure the page they go too is about SEO Tips.

3. Increase Link Popularity.

Link popularity basically means, how many links you have coming into your blog. The more incoming links you have the higher your Google rankings will be.

But, what is more important then the amount, is the quality of those links. Meaning you want to have high PR sites linking to you. So if you’re blog is a PR 2 then you want to share all PR links, but focus more on PR 2 and above.

I seen this in real time, I have about 8500 links coming in, yet I rank higher for many keywords then 2 of my competitors that have 20,000 and 100,000 links coming in..Why is that?  Maybe I have more quality links coming in.

So Quantity is good, but Quality links are best.

4. Use Keywords In Body.

Make sure that keywords are within your body, top, middle and bottom. It’s important that the keywords used in HTML text on page match with keywords used in the site’s meta data and title tags.

Again, “less is more” DO NOT stuff keywords, Google will slap you hard for this.

5. Promote Your Internal Links.

Offer links that direct visitors to helpful, related content. This can be as simple as having a related post plugin to share 3-6 related post links after your readers read a post. You can also have links in your sidebar that shares the most important resources with your readers.

Internal linking is important to having your readers easily find the most helpful information quickly, and Google views on-site links as a sign that visitors like what they see and want to learn more.

6. Make Friends Within Your Niche.

Google likes to see links from blogs in your niche. If your blog about blog tips and you share blog tips, then other blogs in your niche will link to you, now if you blog about blog tips, yet you don’t talk about blog tips, then blogs in your niche will not link to you.

So Google views this as proof that you’re a good resource for blog tips, and a good place to send searchers to get more info on blog tips.

7. Hold Onto Old Links.

Google likes old links from one site to another, it shows a happy relationship between sites. The older the link, the more trust it has. Usually it takes 3-4 months for Google to see that link as a long term happy relationship.

So this is one time when “newer is NOT better” haha

8. Drop Your Page Load Time

This is become a big thing lately, getting your blogs page load time down as low as you can will make your visitors happy and now it makes Google happy. Having a page load time of under 3 sec seems to be a all around good time.

Again Google likes blogs that offer value to readers, the more value you offer the better your Google rankings. No one knows how important this is in rankings, but we do know it is now a criteria they look at, so why not drop your load time.

I was at about a 14 sec load time “not good at all” thanks to a verrryyyyy slow loading Facebook button.

Thanks to my friend Justin at DragonBlogger for helping me this week installing W3 Cache plugin.. I’m loading at about 7-9 sec, better but not great, this will drop to under 5 sec after I fix the slow Facebook button.

9. The Longer You’re Here, The Better.

The longer your blog has been online the better, I noticed a small difference in my rankings when my blog past the 1 year mark.

So be patient, if you can get past that one year mark, your rankings will get better.
