It's a record-breaking year for full-time student and semester one enrolment at Mohawk College. Preliminary enrolment numbers show a jump in full-time enrolments of more than 6% over last year, with 13,048 full-time students registered to attend the College. First semester enrolment jumped more than 7% over Fall 2011, with 6,774 full-time students beginning classes in September.

(@EventityCa) – “Social Discovery in your
Community” – a web app designed to help discover what people are planning,
doing, and recommending across the city. It provides a centralized way to
search for events from sources such as Facebook, Tourism Hamilton, Tourism Burlington,
View Magazine, SNAP Hamilton, Hamilton News, and Kijiji.

Hamilton Times is a collaborative open-data repository of public events for the
city of Hamilton. A centralized pool of accessible data allows sites,
individuals, researchers, and developers to make use of only what they require,
while novel ingest methods aim to lower the technological barriers to
participation. With the initial stages of the project complete, and several
community stakeholders already involved, it seeks to further expand with

A HAZMAT robot designed to assess an environment in real time to assure its
safety before personnel enter the area. With a simple interface anyone who has
played a video game can drive it. Demo by Roboteurs (@roboteurs).
Mohawk's Sustainability Office has teamed up with Raw Materials Company Inc. (RMC) and the Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) to relaunch the on-campus battery recycling program. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to bring their used batteries to any of the specified locations, listed below and we will ensure that they are recycling properly.

What: Emergency Lockdown Drills
Where: Fennell, Brantford (Elgin) and STARRT campuses
When: Week of Sept. 17 – Sept. 21, 2012
Mohawk College is committed to making our campuses safe for students, staff and visitors. As part of this commitment, the college will be holding a series of Emergency Lockdown Drills at the Fennell, Brantford and STARRT campuses between Monday, Sept. 17, and Friday, Sept. 21, 2012.
The Emergency Lockdown Drills are needed to test the college’s revised emergency response plan and lockdown procedures, particularly at the Fennell Campus where recent renovations have significantly changed the interior layout of the campus buildings. The drills will help identify areas where plans and procedures can be improved and provides a good opportunity to test department specific plans developed in the spring.

The Hamilton Spectator has this story about MyHamilton, a new app that aims to better connect students with what's happening in the city. The app is a joint initiative of Mohawk, McMaster University, Columbia International College, the City of Hamilton and technology company Weever Apps. MyHamilton is a crowd-based app that combines social media platforms, geotagging and mapping and interactive forums. Posters with QR codes linking to MayHamilton will be going up around campus.
Next week marks a milestone in the construction of the new Mohawk Recreation Centre.
The bridge that will connect the new facility to the existing Student Centre (G-Wing) will be delivered partially constructed between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17. The bridge will be delivered by transport truck, which will enter the campus from the lights on Fennell Avenue. Access to this entrance will be limited as the truck makes its way into the parking lot. The west Fennell Avenue entrance near Alumni House will not be affected.

Next week is Smart Commute Week at Mohawk.
From Monday, Sept. 17 to Friday, Sept. 21 everyone at Mohawk is encouraged to use a sustainable mode of transportation for their daily commute to and from campus. Ride your bike, take the bus, carpool, or walk to Mohawk and you’ll be eligible for some great prizes, including a trip to Montreal.
Each day will feature a different Grand Prize related to Mohawk’s transportation theme of the day. There will also be daily giveaways including free coffee vouchers, fresh local fruit, wrist bands, and informational pamphlets, as well as some additional prizes courtesy of Smart Commute Hamilton.
