Chain-draped kalimba played with the soft speed of Texas banjo, fiddle and accordion master Ralph White, its acoustic distortions convoluted through a range of materials (rigged to transducers) in Horaflora’s custom-built sound system, yield a crumbling wet firmament of timbres. The songs by which the sounds were discovered are transfixing, psychedelic, transporting; in fact, they invite site-specific listening: Binaural methods make track one best suited to headphones, track two must be heard outdoors, and track three includes unadulterated Weddell seals and is best heard underwater. Lose your map, this is music uncharted.

Following last week’s Thomas Koner’s mentioning of longitude/lattitude’s in the piece, this compilation, the second in a series, does the same. Each of the ten pieces is a favorite place for the composer. They are also mentioned by the place it is, although then its still not easy to know what it is, except of course ‘my bed’ by He Can Jog. I could of course install google’s earth view thingy, but then I rather listen and imagine these places myself. Oh oops. The booklet provides me with pictures and descriptions of each of the places, which is a nice read. If you read these, you might think that this is a CD of purely field recordings, as there are references to recording dates/times, but I guess that’s when the basic material has been recorded, which was later manipulated. Throughout one can say that these ten composers all belong to the world of microsound, with their minimalist, electronic processing of the original field recordings. Sometimes we hear a bit of rainfall, bird twitter, people talking or snooring in ‘my bed’. Not much news under the sun in terms of music, but throughout I must say this is a nice compilation of well made field recordings, microsound and electronics. Including Lawrence English, Yannick Franck, Micheal Santos, Icarus, Sawako, Jeremy Bible, Austitici, Calika and Micheal Trommer. This album contains minimalistic noise, avant-garde synthesizer, guitar, and piano experiments recorded from 2007 to the present year. Sound collages of varied textures and moods, overall this album will challenge listeners to reconsider the nature of ‘music’.

THAM DUO : Anton Mobin and Thomas Thiery improvise a music which evoke the work of early futurist musicians, a strange mixture of nostalgic experiences of everyday life and disintegration of language in sound clusters, Anton making his flea market object whistle and scream, Thomas going deeper and deeper in his nerd’s universe of unidentified sonic objects.

These works are distinctively experimental in nature (especially the first four pirces), but also extremely dramatic in tone, and as a result most of the time they transport us to movie-like settings and places.

To me, the real keeper is ‘Kettering and Corby’. That one really hits the spot here, with a blend of domesticated sinewaves and sci-fi guitar playing-like (hello Cliff Martinez!) nostalgia momentum. Ryan hit the jackpot right here.»

Biography of ocp

João Ricardo (aka ocp) was born in Porto, Portugal.

His musical path started at the age of 6 with piano studies which were to be interrupted by a move to Kuwait. Years later he dedicated himself to the electric bass and guitar, as well as to the exploration of tools such as magnetic tape and software trackers.

The passage through several rock/metal bands (among which Gangrena) and some incursions in the experimental music field led to the present ocp (operador de cabine polivalente) project.

In the advent of the new millenium, he dropped out of Law School and headed to London to study live audio.

Back home, he created his own PA company, worked in a Casino (where he’s had the opportunity to assist Diana Ross, Bobby McFerrin, Chaka Khan, Wilson Pickett, among others) and did free lance audio engineering.

Presently, he dedicates himself to performing live both on his own and with fellow improvisers and to composition/production/experimentation for multimedia; forms Pygar (an A/V duo) with Hugo Olim and participates in two other musical projects: Boiar and F.R.I.C.S. (an improvised fanfare). Throughout his career he’s played alongside names like Mikael Stavostrand, ALOG, Tim Hecker, Kangding Ray, Fennesz, etc, and has performed in Holland, UK, Spain, Cape Verde, Mozambique and Portugal. He’s also a prolific figure in the international open source audio scene.

Recently he created the EdP – Editora do Porto – netlabel.
