This is something you often find on forums. People complaining that they just don’t communicate any more. Or if they communicate, it’s often very shallow. So how do you build real deepness into your communication? What should you do to get real in your communication?

Levels of communication

Most psychologists and counselors would agree that there are different levels of communication. You should aim for higher levels of communication in your relationship. Higher levels of communication should automatically lead to more open communication. In simplified terms, you get the following levels:

- Clichés

- News

- Sharing of emotions

- Intimate communication

Clichés

Hi, how are you? Fine thanks, how are you? Fine thanks! Probably the biggest (and shortest) cliché communication there is, played out all over the world in many (if not all) languages and cultures. Similarly, in long distance relationships, saying “I love you” and “I miss you” all the time isn’t really deep communication. I do it myself, but you should try and aim for a deeper level of communication.

This is actually a very important part of a long distance relationship, more so than in a normal relationship, where you are together all of the time. When you are together, you share normal everyday activities with each other. When you are apart, you miss out. Don’t flood your communication with stories of how you got stuck in traffic today, but do make an effort to remain a part of each other’s lives. The more you know about each other, the more you will grow together in your relationship.

Sharing emotions

When you share news, you’re probably sharing opinions, not emotions. When you attend a football match, all dressed up in the colours of your team, it’s rather clear what your opinion is about who should win. Emotions aren’t the same as opinions. Emotions describe how you feel, what are your fears, what do you value, what are your future plans, etc.

Intimate communication

Does it sometimes feel as if your partner can read your mind? That’s probably intimate communication at work. It’s where you can communicate without words. It’s very difficult to achieve this in a long distance relationship, which is why regular get-togethers are so important.

In a normal relationship, you will gradually and automatically progress from the one type of communication to the other. In a long distance relationship it will take a little more effort. Don’t overwhelm your partner by asking lots of deep emotion sharing questions all at once. I suggest you gradually work up to it while you’re building your relationship. As you progress, you will gradually see more openness in your communication and a deepening of your relationship.

1) Be sincere and passionate

Women don't come with a universal "on" switch - some women love men with big muscles, others hate them. Some like cocky guys, others prefer shy wallflowers. Dealing With Relationship Commitment Problems:
How To Know If She Feels The Same Way About You?

So you have found the woman you want to spend the rest of your life with. The problem is, how do you know if she feels the same way about you? You may also be wondering if she's really the one for you. There are a few question you can ask to determine if the time is right to take the plunge:

1. How long have you been together?

Every relationship has its own unique ebb and flow, but relationship experts have found that it usually takes about two years for a couple to fully commit to each other and begin what's called the "negotiation phase" of the relationship - the period in which you've both gotten to know each other so well that you're battling out what you will and won't live with while trying to hang onto your individual identities.

Interestingly, statistics show that most couples get married after knowing each other for only 18 months, so it's no wonder so many newlyweds fight like cats and dogs! If you've only been together a few months, it's too soon to decide for sure that this is a lifetime relationship - it's certainly worth thinking about, but don't jump the gun.

2. Are you ready to commit?

Make sure you're absolutely certain that you're ready to settle down before you worry about what she's feeling. Think about what you're giving up - sleeping in on weekends, all night video game sessions, beer with the guys, dating other women, drinking milk straight out of the carton - and weight it against everything that you'll get from a long term relationship with her. If you have any regrets about giving up your single lifestyle, then you're not ready.

3. Is she ready to commit?

She could have come from a home with parents who made marriage seem unappealing, or she may just be attracted to the drama of new romance followed by the inevitable break-up.

But if she's not ready, that can be a problem if you're sure that she's the one for you.

5. Are you willing to be patient?

If the lady you love really is a commitment-phobe, you have two choices - you can stick around and hope that she'll change her mind, or you can find someone else. You have to ask yourself what's more important to you, to be in a committed relationship, or to be in a relationship with her no matter what form it takes. If your heart belongs to her and you want to stick it out, then be realistic about what that means.

It may take months or years for her to come around to where she's ready to fully commit to a relationship - during which time, you'll have a number of fights as you adapt to your situation, and she may go out with other men. And ultimately you may not be the man she chooses - it's not unusual for a man to stand by patiently waiting for a commitment-phobic woman to come around, only to have her fall in love and marry someone else.

If you truly love someone, you should try to negotiate a relationship that's satisfying for both of you. But if one of you wants to get married, settle down and raise a family and the other person isn't ready to do that, there's not much you can do besides be patient and hope for the best.

You may find that the best solution is to put your own expectations on hold, and accept that not every great love affair ends in long-term commitment. Enjoy your time together, love her for who she is, and perhaps you'll get your wish and she'll commit to a lifetime of happiness.

The 3 Most Common Reasons Long Distance Relationships Fail

Why do long distance relationships fail? Do they have a greater tendency towards failure than “normal” relationships? What are the most common reasons for failure, and what can you do about it?

I’ve read a statistic somewhere a while back that states that long distance relationships actually have a better success rate than proximal (normal) relationships. Because I haven’t verified the statistic, I’m not going to include the numbers here, but it does make sense to me.

If you and your partner decide to enter a long distance relationship, it means you’re definitely considering having a long term relationship – otherwise you would have just broken up, wouldn’t you? Still, long distance relationships do sometimes fail.

The most common reasons I’ve found are the following:

# Blaming the distance when there are other problems

# No long time perspective

# Setting yourself up for failure right from the start

Blaming the distance

What do I mean by “blaming the distance”? Well all couples have trouble in their relationships from time to time. It’s completely normal, and if handled correctly, will lead to growth in the relationship.

The problem comes when couples say things like: “We’re fighting all the time because we’re so far apart”, or “It’s just so hard to trust each other when you’re apart”.

Let me give you a reality check: You’re not fighting because you’re apart. You’re fighting because of some kind of misunderstanding or clash of interest between the two of you. This does not come as a result of the distance. You would have had misunderstandings if you were together. Don’t blame the distance.

Reality check number two: If you can’t trust your partner when you’re apart, you can’t trust your partner when you are together. If you’re afraid your partner will cheat on you just because you’re apart, you don’t have a strong relationship. Distance is not the culprit here. All is not lost yet. You can still work on strengthening your relationship even if you’re apart.

No long time perspective

How many times do you hear people complaining on forums that it will be two years (or three years, or eleven months…) before they will be together again and they don’t think they can handle it?

Seriously now – two years is not such a long time. Even if you’re only a teenager, think back over the last two years of your life. Did it feel all that long? If you’ve already left school, think about how fast time seems to fly. I still regularly dream about school (mostly exams that I forgot to study for…), even though I’ve long since forgotten everything.

Consider your time here as an investment. You’re investing two years of your life in order for you to be with the person of your dreams for the rest of your life. I’m assuming again that you actually have a long time plan in your relationship. Let’s say you’re apart for two years, and you’ll be together for at least another 50 years after that. It’s a 25 times return on investment. I wish I could do that with my money!

I’m not saying you should know right away whether or not your partner in this relationship will be your life partner, but you do need to consider the option.

Setting yourself up for failure

I’m hearing you say: “I don’t do that…” Well, you may just inadvertently be doing it by listening to the wrong people and having the wrong mindset. Have you ever made the following statements?

- I don’t really believe in long distance relationships

- I really like him/her but I don’t think it will last

- My friends told me it’s a bad idea

Did you ever play some kind of team sport in your life? What did the captain tell you before the game? “Guys, I don’t think we’ll make it, but let’s just give it a shot?” Of course not! If you had any kind of decent captain, you would have been totally psyched up before the game. You would have been 100% positive about it, even if you knew you were up against a stronger team.

Now what makes you think that a long distance relationship will work if you don’t have the right mindset? If you’re already thinking about how it will not work, you’re planning for it not to work.

As a quick side note: If your friends tell you it’s a bad idea because of the person you’re dating, you may consider listening to their advice. If they tell you it’s a bad idea just because it’s long distance – ignore them.

If you avoid these common mistakes, you’re almost guaranteed a successful long distance relationship.

We all know that if you wink at someone you’re sending them a signal that says you’re interested in them. Granted, most of us aren’t comfortable being quite that forward with a perfect stranger, but there are more subtle ways of showing interest by using body language.

One mistake that many women and men make when it comes to love is losing sight of what is best for them. They put the other person’s needs and desires before their own. Although this can be fulfilling in a very unselfish way, it can also lead to countless problems in the future.

Therefore, it’s always a good idea to put yourself first before you even begin to think about love.
This can be hard to understand if you hold the belief that you need another person’s love and acceptance to feel whole. Although it’s always enriching to be surrounded by people we care for, you will find much more happiness if you begin any relationship with your needs fulfilled from within.

When a person feels happy and fulfilled in their life it becomes much easier to love another.

In most cases, these online sites provide a wonderful and safe environment for single people to meet up.

The premise and process is relatively simple – you fill out a profile, upload an image of yourself, and wait for the responses. Depending on the site you are dealing with, there may or may not be a screening process involved. It would seem that in this realm of dating, what you get is what you pay for as many of the pay to use sites are a bit more stringent when it comes to screen applicants.

The last decision is ultimately yours though and it’s up to you whether to take the friendship you’ve developed with someone online and take it to the next level; an in person meeting.
There are arguably a lot of benefits as well as drawbacks when it comes to dating someone you’ve met online but there are a few things you can do to up your chances of finding someone who is genuine.

These include:

Ask for additional pictures. Most dating sites allow their members the opportunity to upload an image so others can get a good idea of what they look like. However, even though it’s morally wrong, many people choose to upload pictures of others in place of themselves.
If you’ve met someone online you’re sweet on, ask to see a few more pictures and offer up a few of your own. If they decline or come up with excuse after excuse, you should take that as a sign.

Ask to speak on the phone before meeting. Although the person you have been spending time with online is probably the same gender that they claim to be, there is a slim chance they aren’t. Before you meet anyone in person that you’ve first met on the Internet, set up a phone meeting.

You certainly don’t need to know their Social Security Number, but you should ask about relationship history, where they live, where they went to school and what they do for a living. Even this limited information gives you enough to check into. You need to be absolutely sure of who you are speaking with before you jump into a real time meeting.

Ask a friend to go with you to the first meeting. They certainly don’t need to sit in on the date, but meet in a busy area and have someone you trust nearby, just in case. This will allow you to not only feel more secure, but after the date, you can get their impressions on the person’s demeanor and body language.

It’s true that many people have discovered love online and that might be in your future as well. You need to play it safe though until you are sure of whom you are talking to. A little extra time and research can save you heartache down the road.

All couples fight – some will tell you they don’t. The chances are good, very good in fact that they are lying. When the gloves come off and the argument takes a turn for the worst, feelings can get genuinely hurt. In some cases, it can take days, even weeks for you or your partner to feel better and to desire to be close again.

Rebounding from an argument is an individual process, but there are a few things you can do to help move the process along a little quicker. Some tips to help both you and your partner feel better faster include:

Allow some cooling off time. After a very heated discussion, both parties may feel as though their emotions are right at the surface. This can lead to them feeling prone to anger or sadness with little provocation. If you’ve ended your argument, spend a few minutes, at the very least, apart. In some cases, depending on your individual personalities, you may need to extend that to a few hours or perhaps even a day or two.

Apologize for your part in the argument. Arguments are born from the fact that two people have two very different views on a subject. Once the argument is over, it matters very little if the disagreement was about a missing sock or the dating habits of your teenage daughter. If you were being unreasonable, admit it.

Listen to the other person. This can be a tough one. After the argument is over and the emotions have had time to settle, it’s very important to have a one-on-one discussion about the matter at hand. Talking through the problem will ultimately lead to resolution. Both sides need to be heard, so remember that and bite your tongue if need be. You’ll get your chance to talk, in the meantime, let your partner express himself or herself.

Plan an evening out. Even after you’ve both talked through the problem, there may be some lingering resentment. If that’s the case, it’s vital that you both let go of that. If you don’t, it can eat at the foundation of the relationship.
Plan a fun and relaxing evening or afternoon away from home. You may want to have a nice dinner at your favorite restaurant or perhaps go to a movie together. Something that can be enjoyed by the two of you without any discussion of the problem you’ve just resolved.

Don’t bring the argument up during your next disagreement. Once an argument is over, let it be over. Too often, both men and women will drudge up past problems when new ones present themselves. Although it can be tempting to throw past mistakes back in someone’s face, it can also be disastrous. Let bygones be bygones and move forward.

Although arguments can certainly change the dynamic of the relationship in the present, they don’t have to damage it. If you take some time to sort through the disagreement once it’s over and reconnect with your partner, you’ll be well on your way to a better and more honest relationship.
