A few weeks ago we released a new product called “BigSellingVideoOptins“. Essentially it’s a professional quality video squeeze page template package that works with any video player or autoresponder system. All you do is add your video, add your text, then add your autoresponder code and you’re done.

Yesterday we received a superb review of these squeeze page video templates from Melanie Langenhan, listen to what she had to say…

Some weeks ago I got my hands on the new BigSellingVideoOptins Template Package by Brian Terry. This is an online product which contains prior-ranking templates and graphics for complete auto responder opt-in form pages. These templates are designed to include video messages to boost your opt-in rates. This sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

I wanted to check this product out because I am relatively new to auto responders and list building, although I am quite a while learning about internet marketing now. Anything that will help me to start and run my business successfully is very welcome …

Actually I have been blogging for about 10 years now, but I am a little shy to ask people to subscribe to my newsletter. So my opt-in form was very small and could be overseen easily. BigSellingVideoOptins changes that on 180 degrees.

To be clear, this product doesn’t just provide small, somehow nicely designed forms. It contains 45 (!) beautiful designed all-inclusive opt-in pages, with graphics and .psd-files plus a bonus template.

It’s up to the user how much one customizes the templates. Changing the video link, headlines/text messages and auto responder codes is mandatory; fonts and colors can be kept as is, if one likes the look.

Furthermore I got an eBook about list building, lots of helpful video tutorials and unadvertised bonuses with BigSellingVideoOptins Template Package that support the handling and tweaking of the templates.

On the download site, all content is placed on one long page with instructions and links to the graphic files (which are delivered in zip-format). The more I check out this page, the more I like the presentation of all materials. The look is clean and structured, with a step by step guide to get the desired outcome. Just read through the text from beginning to end, download the software, templates and fonts, watch the videos, follow the instructions, and you will be done. I wish more internet marketers would use such a friendly “user interface” to support the learning experience.

Brian Terry from BigSellingVideoOptins doesn’t give you only instructions and templates; he also serves you with the tools you need: links to free software and complete screen cast courses on how to use them, i.e. Gimp, FTP programs or screen capture tools. So everything is easy going – if you’re not completely overwhelmed by this offer

After the customization of a template you just need to upload it to your server, link to it and watch your subscriber list growing.

If you already use an auto responder system and want to grow your list, this product is for you! If you are new to Internet Marketing and want to promote products (your own or as an affiliate), it’s for you too! BigSellingVideoOptins teaches you what you need to know about list building and gives you these professional looking templates.

The only downside I have found to this product is a missing instruction about how to finally integrate the customized html file into an existing website or blog. I already mailed Brian Terry about this inconvenience and I am sure he will find a quick solution.

BigSellingVideoOptins costs less than 50 bucks. All in all the nicely designed templates (which I wouldn’t be able to create on my own), the courses about Video Marketing and Gimp, as well as the listbuilding eBook and the courses on HTML and FTP (those are for technical newbies), are without any doubt worth the money. If you are in need for professional opt-in templates, the BigSellingVideoOptins package is made for you. Go and give it a try!

Aardvark is surprisingly useful. Answers, especially about local and travel topics, usually arrive within minutes and usually you will get more than just one answer. Aardvark usually distributes questions by email and IM, but the iPhone app may just turn out to be the best interface for this. After all, you always have your phone with you. Another nice feature is that the app also supports Facebook Connect, so you can also query your Facebook friends easily.

Answering questions on the iPhone is also quite easy. Just head to the ‘Answer’ tab and a new question will pop up. You can customize what kind of questions you would like to answer in your Aardvark profile. If you don’t know the answer and want to switch to another question, just shake the phone and Aardvark will look for another one (and make some aardvark noises in the background as well).

To route questions, Aardvark does some pretty sophisticated analysis in the backend to make sure your questions get to those people who can actually answer them. For users, however, all that matters is that questions actually get answered, and this is where Aardvark does a really good job.

One of my favorite ways to trim money from my spending is to find simple little substitutes for my regular expenses. If I can trim a few bucks from the cost of household supplies, routine purchases, and other things like that, over the long run, that can add up to a lot of money with virtually no change in my life. Here are twelve of my favorites (not including my “infamous” homemade laundry detergent).

Laundry Softener -> Vinegar
Instead of buying expensive laundry detergent, just use half a cup of white vinegar to the “softener” cup in your washing machine. It accomplishes the same effect as softener – it makes your clothes really soft – plus it breaks down the laundry detergent, making the clothes much better for people with sensitive skin or allergies. What about the smell? Once the clothes are dried, you smell nothing at all. You can buy four gallons of vinegar for $6, meaning the cost per load is about $0.05, while a load’s worth of Downy costs about $0.15. You save a dime per load and your clothes are less chemical laden.

Ziplocs -> Reusable Containers
Ziplocs – especially the small ones – usually wind up in the trash after one use. On the other hand, a reusable container can last for years. Since a typical Ziploc costs about $0.10 and you can get a reusable Rubbermaid container for about $1.00, you break even on the container after about twelve uses or so (the cost of washing the container in the dishwasher is estimated there) and everything thereafter is pure savings.

Dishwashing Detergent -> Simple Homebrew
Instead of using liquid or powder dishwashing detergent (and paying a stiff premium for it), just take an old milk jug, put two teaspoons of liquid dish detergent and four teaspoons of baking powder in it, then slowly fill the jug with warm water, sloshing it while you do it (even better, just slowly add the soap as you’re adding the water). Then put that jug under the sink. Each time you do a load, fill up the cup with the homebrew. It works like a charm. The jug will provide enough for eight to ten loads of dishes for about a penny each, compared to about thirteen cents per load for ordinary detergent.

Knife Set -> Chef’s Knife
You’re just getting started in the kitchen and you think it’s time to get yourself a big ol’ knife set. Don’t. Unless you’re doing crazy things in the kitchen, all day every day, you really only need one knife – a chef’s knife. Head down to your local retailer and check them out. One good chef’s knife will make kitchen work easier than an entire block’s worth of other knives. It’s really all you need – I can’t even remember the last time I used a knife besides that one. Just learn how to properly hone it and sharpen it (both are easy – check out this YouTube video).

Windex -> Vinegar
Seriously. Just use vinegar instead of Windex when you clean your windows. It cleans off almost anything on a window and doesn’t streak and, more importantly, doesn’t leave a film behind as Windex often does. Just put some vinegar in a spray bottle – maybe that Windex one that you didn’t buy a replacement for – and just wash windows as normal. You’ll be quite happy with the results – and you’ll save about a penny per squirt.

Paper Towels -> Reusable Cotton Cloths
Cotton cloths work better, absorb more, and you can get a five pound (!) box for about the same price as a jumbo pack of paper towels. But what about the WASHING? It’s easy – just keep a ton of them in a drawer in the kitchen and use them for spills and filtering and other purposes until they’re dirty, then just toss them into any load of socks or underwear or towels. Even a big handful take up barely any room at all and before you know it, you’ve refilled your supply. Better yet, you’re not buying any more paper towels and you’re reducing your garbage.

Drain Cleaner -> Baking Soda and Vinegar
Remember those nifty volcanoes that kids tend to make for science fair projects in grade school? The basic mixture that made them bubble up was baking soda and vinegar – it expands nicely and pushes itself into everything. Perfect for clearing a clogged drain, no? Just put in a quarter cup of baking soda, chase it with half a cup of vinegar, then cover the drain and wait fifteen minutes. Once that’s done, chase it with a gallon or so of boiling water. This will clean almost any drain and save you from blowing unnecessary amounts of money on a big bottle of Drano. This also works as a toilet bowl cleaner – it’ll foam up like crazy at first, but after fifteen minutes, you’ll be able to scrub your toilet with a brush with ease.

Television -> Old Computer
If you need a new television somewhere, why not just use an old computer instead? A computer that’s five years old with a ‘net connection can easily be a substitute for a television. You can watch tons of programs full screen on Hulu and many channels offer a full screen stream, too, plus it’s simple to watch DVDs on a computer as well. Even better, you can stow the box somewhere out of the way (in a cabinet, perhaps) and just leave the monitor somewhere easy to access. This can be a great solution in a kitchen, where you can watch television on it or use it to call up YouTube videos to tutor you through a meal prep – plus you don’t have the cost of buying anything to get it working.

Oven Cleaner -> Ammonia
If you cook at home, you’ll eventually have to clean your oven – and it can be a nasty job. There are lots of products out there that claim to be able to make this process easy, but the easiest way I’ve found is far cheaper – and far easier. Just put a cup of ammonia in a glass bowl in the evening, put that bowl in your oven, and close the door. Let it sit overnight. The next morning, get rid of the ammonia and you’ll find scrubbing down the inside of your oven is suddenly quite easy. The burnt-on drippings from spilled dishes will come right up with no problems. Plus, a jug of ammonia is far cheaper than some spray-on solution.

Soft Scrub -> Baking Soda and Dish Soap
Soft Scrub does a great job of cleaning up serious stains all around the house, but you don’t need to drop four bucks on a small bottle of it. Just put half a cup of baking soda (cost: about a quarter) and then add a little bit of liquid dish soap and stir. Add a bit more liquid soap and keep stirring until you have a paste that’s about the consistency of frosting – and you’re ready to go. It costs about forty cents to make more than enough to clean anything you want to clean – far cheaper than Soft Scrub and with the same results.

Air Freshener -> Baking Soda
I actually don’t like most air fresheners – they usually make a room smell like chemistry. Fortunately, there’s a much easier solution – just put out a saucer with some baking soda sprinkled in it near where the odor is and it’ll go away. Got a baby diaper pail? Just put some baking soda in it. Baking soda just eats odors.

Carpet Cleaner -> Baking Soda and Peroxide (or Club Soda)
Got a nasty spot on your carpet? (I could tell you a horrible story about a blood stain on a couch, but I’ll spare you the details.) You don’t need carpet cleaner to get rid of it. Just dump a few spoonfuls of baking soda on it, rub it in, then put some hydrogen peroxide (a capful) or club soda (as much as you want) on the soda and rub it in as it bubbles. This gets rid of almost any carpet or upholstery stain you’ll face – it literally saved some microfiber for us that seemed to have a permanent stain on it. Plus, it’s cheap – baking soda is really inexpensive and even club soda is something inexpensive you might have in the cupboard.

Gras-Duft in Flaschen: Forscher entwickeln Anti-Stress-Spray

(nb)

During the month of September I will be running what I like to call a twitter series. Each day of the month, I will tweeting a new blogging tip on twitter and tagging it “30 days to kick your blog in the butt”. It should be a fun series to run and we are already receiving a lot of feedback and comments about it. We plan to feature some of our followers comments and suggestions in an upcoming blog post as part of a series here on Blog For Profit. We will also make available here on Blog For Profit a post listing out each and every one of the “30 days to kick your blog in the butt” tweets.

Since you have taken the time to follow my ramblings on twitter, I am giving you first look at this upcoming special series we will be running on Blog For Profit.

By the way, this is a long post, but important. Please read it all!

31 Days to Kick Your Blog in the Butt

If there is one pattern I hate to see it is the new blogger who starts off with a huge bang and all kinds of enthusiasm and it drops off. They post to their blog and do all those things they need to do to have a successful blog. But for some reason it just stops. Even the “seasoned” blogger runs into a brick wall from time to time and for some reason they have “lost it”.

What are the possible reasons for this?

They run out of things to write about, or at least they think they have

They get so busy with the business the blog generated, they don’t have time to post, blah, blah, blah

They don’t feel like anyone is reading their blog, and of course not posting is a way to get readers back. D’oh!!

They just can’t think of any good headlines to put on their post, so they stop posting

They are not getting comments on their blog, have they asked for them or do they reply to the ones they get.

They have a blog that just is not attracting readers or if they show up, they don’t stay long enough to read the content.

They have failed to connect with their readers so the readers feel like they can trust the blogger and the blogger gets discouraged because no one is stopping by

They don’t feel like they have built a community with their blog, but why, what have they failed to do

They don’t have anyone subscribing to their blog, without new content what do they expect.

I really could go on and on. And after I typed out the above list, I am thinking perhaps the title of this series should be “31 days to kick the blogger in the butt“. Starting on October 1st, we are going to discuss at least 31 ways you can kick your blog in the butt, (or yourself in the butt) so your blog either gets a great start or it gets a restart. Intermingled between each day’s post will be some bonus post and material you will be able to use along the way.

How you can participate in the Kick Your Blog in the Butt series

I have run something similar to this series in the past and the response has been great. This time I have decided to run it differently. So if you are wanting to Kick Your Blog in the Butt and are wanting to participate so you get the greatest benefit, please read on carefully.

For 31 Days to Kick Your Blog in the Butt I am asking those participating to sign up as registered participants. You don’t have to, but to get the full benefits from it, I wish you would. And if you get tired of me during the 31 days, you can unsubscribe at anytime.

You can register here and I am going to explain more on why I am doing it this way below.

Here are the details for the 31 Days to Kick Your blog in the Butt series

The reason for and why

I have been thinking about doing this series for at least 3 or 4 months, but I wanted it to be different. I wanted those who read it to come away with more than just a few bookmarks added to their browser. What I wanted was a group of bloggers who were willing to set aside a month of their valuable time to work on improving their blogs. And a group of brand new bloggers or those thinking about blogging taking some time to seriously look at what they need to do to make sure their launch or new blog kicks some serious butt. In addition to wanting a good core group of bloggers, new and seasoned, I wanted the group to not put off those things they need to be doing now to “I’ll do it someday”. For me, I find I am more serious about things if I actually sign up to do something. There is something about doing that which makes us more accountable to ourselves. So, have I peeked your interest yet?

How all of this is going to work

Each day, starting on October 1st and until the end of the month, I will be posting here on Blog For Profit a new post which will be part of the 31 Days to Kick Your Blog in the Butt Series. In addition to the post, there will be an email going out each and every day about that day’s post and some bonus material too. But only those who sign up will get the emails. The posts will be written to include:

A discussion or teaching component

A task/homework/assignment component

The idea is to move past just teaching and giving you information. Only providing the teaching element overlooks the importance of actually prompting you to digest the material and DO something. I want you to get your hands dirty and do something with what I hope you will be learning from the material. And while some of you are not new to blogging and have heard some of this before, I am hoping you will be inspired to put what you know into action. And, kick your blog in the butt so it is actually working for you.

How you can Participate

As I indicated above, this time around I am asking those who want to take part in Kicking their Blogs in the Butt series to register their email addresses. You will receive one email per day over the 31 days letting you know a new post is up, giving you the link to it and a little extra information for those who registered. Remember, you don’t have to signup for the email updates and the little extras. In fact you can follow the new post via our RSS feed. However, I am asking you to register for a few really good reasons:

Signing up will sometimes make us more accountable to do what we say we will do.

It will allow me to give a little extra information than the post contain on their own. The blog post will be written in a way anyone can benefit from them. Whether you do all of the suggested task or not. The emails which I will be sending each day will include a little extra information which is relevant to those doing the suggested task/homework/assignments. I am also working on getting a couple of top notch bloggers to provide guest post which will go out only to those who registered.

I am also hoping this time our 31-Day series will live well beyond the original 31 days it runs. Doing it this way will allow people to signup and do the 31-Days at any point as the emails will be sent out via my favorite auto-responder, Aweber.

I am selfish and I love the community you and I have built here at Blog For Profit. And I want it to continue to grow to the point we might be able to start a forum or a built in social networking feature.

Finally, there are at least two additional things we are working on as a bonus for those who register. I will be writing more about that as we finalize the details.

If you do signup for the 31-Days and you decide at any point it is not for you, you are welcome to unsubscribe. No hard feelings at all. I know how busy you all are. Once the 31–Days of Kick Your Blog in the Butt series is over, I am not planning on sending out too many more emails. We may add a few extra task from time to time. And we may make a few special announements too. However, the daily emails will stop.

Finally, thank you goes out to @MikhaelaCraig for doing a great job getting us the above logo for 31-Days to Kick Your Blog in the Butt.

via MakeUseOf.com by Eyal Sela on 8/30/09

Writing in a foreign language (in this case, English) can be quite difficult, and mistakes are easy to make. These range from misspelled and missing words to grammatical errors and incorrect sentences. Sometimes you can make a mistake and not even know about it!

This post offers ESL tools and practices based on real life experience that will help significantly improve your written English.

On-the-fly misspelling correction

TinySpell is a little software that detects spelling errors as you type (compared to spellcheckers that requires you to manually check the text). It is a great addition to the built-in spellchecker in your text editor, since it allows you to correct misspelled words without taking your hands off the keyboard.

Another advantage is that it reduces the need to search for the right spelling of words that the built-in spellchecker couldn’t correct.

Are you using the right word?

But a spellchecker won’t tell you if you chose the right word and surely won’t help if you’re having a problem finding the right one to use.

For these cases you should download and install the WordWeb dictionary as an ESL tool. Use it to find synonyms or make sure the meaning of the word which you chose. For example, if you’re in doubt whether to use ‘then’ or ‘than’, you can check their definition within a single click, without even leaving the application you’re in.

You can also use the online English-English dictionary YourDictionary as an ESL tool to learn the right way to use a word. Just search for that word and then click the ‘Sentence examples‘ tab. There you will find examples of use in sentences (see image below).

If you know the word in your native language but not in English, use an online dictionary such as WordReference to translate it. If your language does not show up in WordReference, use Google to find one in which it does and save it to your bookmarks for future use.

Find the right word in a given context & make sure the sentence is correct.

When you’re not sure if a sentence is correct, or can’t remember how a phrase goes, use Google as an ESL tool. Often it’s enough just to copy and paste the sentence or a part of into Google to get the rest of it or to see how others have written it differently.

For example, if you search for ‘it is not over until‘, the first results will tell you that the rest of the sentence is ‘until the fat lady sings” (see image below).

When the sentence you’re writing isn’t that trivial, you have to be more specific for Google to help. Copy the sentence and paste it into Google enclosed in double quotation marks. The search will return only the exact sentence. If it shows up in high frequency, it is likely to assume that it is correct.

If you’re not sure about certain words within the sentence, replace them with an asterisk (*). That tells Google that ’something should be here, but I don’t know what’. The search results will contain variations of the sentence, from which you could learn the right way to write it.

For example, searching for this query: “paste it * google” (including the quotation marks) would have taught you to write “paste it into google” rather then “paste it to google”.

Problematic sentences & paragraphs

You’re over with the spelling and missing words. But did you compose the sentences correctly? Did you choose the right words? The people over at UsingEnglish, the English language discussion forums, will be glad to help you.

Just write the sentence or paragraph you’re not sure about, and you’ll get an answer within a few minutes or hours. Another possibility is to ask Aardvark for an opinion about the sentence – it has been working great for me.

Full text grammar check

Spellchecker is an online spelling, grammar, and thesaurus checker. Having accomplished the previous steps, you will probably not need to use the spelling feature spellchker offers.

The grammar checking, on the other hand, is very useful and worth going through. It detects mistakes such as sentences that do not begin with a capital letter; correct grammar mistakes such as “to” vs. “too”, and warn you from being too wordy.

Find the unfindable mistakes

The final step is to use Google translate. The secret here is to use it in reverse. That is, take the finished text in English and translate it into your native language. This step takes a lot of time, and surely there is no need to apply it always, but I find it crucial for important texts, such as blog posts I publish.

Reading the text in your native language enables you to detect mistakes you wouldn’t otherwise detect. For example, no spelling or grammar checker would correct the sentence “it seams like a bed idea to fill out this from” (where “seams”, “bed”, and “from” should have been “seem”, bad” and “form”, respectively). You wouldn’t even know the mistakes are there to ask for help, but in the translated version this sentence would just not make any sense.

What are your tools and practices for better English? Tell us in the comments.

Was ist Blawging Lawyers

Deepak from GreatestReviews.net asked me today for some advice how to improve his blog. Here is my answer.

Social Media Information

1. Don’t show such big Social Media buttons on your front page, they take too much room compared to the post text and they steal the attention of the reader. If you can, use more decent buttons or links. People who are engaged in Social Media will tweet or digg a post even if the “invitation” is smaller than now. They care for good content and honor it.
2. Get rid of the word counter at the bottom. If you need to publish the counter, put it on the post, not under the excerpt.

Ads

3. These ads are animated and attract too much attention. I know you want to earn money from clicks, but first comes content. Try to find ads that support your topic or use networks like Adsense. With context related ads you would get ads about Twitter and Social Media – which would fit fine to the content.

Header

4. Instead of this animated ad in the corner of your header, try a picture of yourself. Give your site a personal note. Your content is personal either (like “The Famous Five” – I read them too when I was a child).

About page

5. It took me two steps to come to this page. Why do you break the information into different pieces? Try to write a personal summary, add a photo as well, why do you blog, why do you name your site “Greatest Reviews”, what’s the purpose of the site … tell a story.
6. Get rid of the “Readers who viewed …” line on pages, this works great for posts.

Friends, Blogroll, Commentators and Categories

7. Re-order your sidebar. Categories or tags move up, friends, commentators, links and badges move down. Be careful that you don’t nail your design because the buttons are too large.

If you found this review helpful …

a recommendation on LinkedIn would be appreciated.
